Sounders Look to get Back on Track Against Visiting Impact by Will Parchman You could be excused for letting out a relieved exhale at the realization that Didier Drogba will not be on the field Saturday. Drogba has terrorized MLS since joining the Montreal Impact late last year, scoring 11 goals in 11 games at an outrageous clip of about a goal every 80 minutes. Even Sebastian Giovinco is looking at that kind of tally with awe. Despite the fact that Drogba is 38 and has been dealing with intermittent injury issues for the last few years, it would seem he’s found a soft landing pad in Montreal to see out the twilight of his career. But Drogba’s been injured this season, and his 20-minute stint off the bench in a 2-0 loss to FC Dallas on March 19 represented his first field time of the year. Even still, Drogba made it clear
6 · MATCHDAY
he’ll be taking the grass track worn thin by several other high-profile older players by not playing on turf this season. Even if Drogba was healthy, he won’t grace Seattle’s plush new field. So sure, there’s plenty of reason to let out that exhale. But Drogba isn’t Montreal’s biggest danger man. That title belongs to the explosive Ignacio Piatti. Piatti largely flew under the radar in Montreal until 2015, when he broke out of his shell with a flourish. Last season, in 26 games he produced nine goals and eight assists and proved to be a slithery marker as arguably the most dangerous No. 10 in the league. While players like Diego Valeri and Javier Morales and Benny Feilhaber got most of the national praise early in the season, Piatti simply ducked his head
and produced. The fact that Montreal was one of the most dangerous teams in the league over the second half of the year was largely down to him. Drogba’s goals didn’t fall from the sky, after all. Nothing’s changed in that regard in 2016. By the third game of the year he’d already racked up three goals and two assists. Whoever’s starting up top for Montreal - and in their last match that was longtime MLS speedster Dominic Oduro - Piatti will be tucking in behind and spraying dangerous balls left and right. He’ll undoubtedly be the focal point of the defensive unit when Montreal and Seattle clash on Saturday night at CenturyLink Field. Under Montreal coach Mauro Biello, Montreal tends to favor the 4-2-3-1 with Piatti running the show in the middle and, of late, ball shuttlers Lucas Ontivero and Harry Shipp on his flanks. At its best, that creates a manic flurry of motion around the box, where Piatti
and Shipp in particular have become well acquainted with one another in a short period of time. If Seattle can quiet those two technicians, it can feel good about its chances. To that end, it’s worth taking a moment to push Osvaldo Alonso under a spotlight he’s richly earned so far this season. The opposing No. 10 is almost always Alonso’s defensive task, and when he’s dialed in, Alonso tends to do something possessive with the turnover. In other words, he restarts the attack. And there’s a case to be made that he’s never been as locked in as he is right now. In his entire career. Among all MLS players who’ve played at least 200 minutes this year, Alonso’s 90.9 pass success rate is third in the league, behind only Anibal Godoy and Darlington Nagbe. While the pass volume doesn’t reach similarly high levels, it’s important to note how well Alonso has done in integrating with a new regular partner in central midfield
MATCHDAY · 7
in Cristian Roldan. Alonso’s been extremely efficient in the middle even in the absence of injured Erik Friberg, and more importantly he’s been quality kick-starting attacks. Which brings us back to the conundrum Seattle’s been flirting with for weeks now: how do you extract more goals out of this front three? “Seriously, we need maybe more goals,” Paraguayan center forward Nelson Valdez said this week. “What I say is we have to now push as a team, and not me or (Clint) Dempsey or
(Jordan) Morris, but everybody for the Seattle Sounders.” While Valdez looks to continue anchoring the front three in the 4-3-3, Dempsey and Morris return from two very different qualifying adventures this week. Sounders fans were no doubt overjoyed to see Dempsey smash home a carom in the U.S. men’s national team’s 4-0 pasting of Guatemala. Notably, Dempsey was deployed centrally in the 4-3-3, and it was clear he enjoyed operating closer to goal. Confidence-builders like those - that was his first run of play goal this calendar year - can only help. Morris, though, is trying to put an Olympic qualification failure against Colombia behind him. The U.S. midfield largely failed to connect with Morris throughout the 180-minute series, and the U.S. was bounced 3-2 on aggregate without Morris finding the net. In fact, his only real chance came in the first leg when he stabbed at an outsidefooted golazo effort that clanged off the crossbar. The one certainty is that the Sounders need goals. Sounders coach Sigi Schmid noted that the full first team - at least the one that left for the international weekend healthy - is likely to play this weekend. Left back Joevin Jones could be the notable exception after returning from Trinidad & Tobago duty with a niggling injury, but Schmid noted that it wasn’t serious. With three games and three losses in the rearview, the Sounders await a spark. If Alonso and Roldan can quiet Piatti and the front three finally bags that run of play goal that’s eluded them all season, we could finally be looking at the match that gets things back on track.

MATCHDAY STORYLINES Radio Play-by-Play Commentator Matt Johnson tells you his three storylines to follow in tonight’s match vs. Montreal Impact Montreal heads into CenturyLink Field on Saturday boasting first-place status in the Eastern Conference. Both wins came while scoring three goals in each match, and it wasn’t a horrendous thing for the Impact to lose to Western Conference-leading FC Dallas in Texas early in the year.
is pulled out vs. Vancouver we’d still be talking about that Andreas Ivanschitz screaming free kick. Montreal will be a tough opponent but as we move through this long season the talent will take over and chances will be put in the back of the net.
DON’T PANIC
If you are lucky enough to come to the match vs. the Impact take in the talent and moves of Ignacio Piatti. Having grown up in a family that went to sporting events of all types here in Seattle, my Dad made sure that we appreciated big-time talent on the visiting teams. Whether it was Nolan Ryan, Tim Duncan or Bo Jackson, there is something about watching great talent coming to town to take on “your team.” I don’t mean to compare Piatti to three Hall of Famers but you get where I’m going with this. Piatti is a world class dribbler of the ball, and if you decide to double him he’ll find the open man in dangerous areas. But if he does decide to keep possession he is very dangerous moving around a number of defenders. If you have not seen the video of his goal in Vancouver in the team’s opener please do. The Argentine midfielder will push forward and pull the strings for the Impact, and for Sounders fans hopefully he’ll be wonderful to watch (up to a certain point).
As the Sounders head into the fourth match of the campaign with a zero in two of the most important columns of the stat sheet, my first point I’d like to make is DON’T PANIC. The team has played well early on but individual mistakes have cost them dearly. A couple goalkeeping errors, a red card and some defensive mistakes on set pieces have all added up to an 0-3-0 start. If a three-game losing streak happened in the middle of the season there would be concern but not a level of panic. Because there are zeroes in both the win and point columns, some folks might be looking at the beginning of the season as a lost cause. Again, a red card vs. Sporting KC, a set piece miscue and goalkeeping error vs. RSL, plus two unfortunate PK calls vs. Vancouver have us singing a completely different tune than anyone would have wanted to hear at the beginning of April. If a win

WORK ON CHEMISTRY As I’ve mentioned, the Sounders do have some positives to work from in the opening three matches. In all three, the Rave Green have had dominant spells of possession, but to this point the ball is going in the back of the net less than once a game. This won’t continue and the Sounders will start bagging goals soon. But to get there the team needs to work on that final pass to open up the defense. The much talked about 4-3-3 is working on the defensive side but on the offensive side they have yet to open up opposing defenses. The simple movement against Vancouver that went from Ozzie Alonso to Joevin Jones crossing to Dempsey will produce a goal more times than not if Deuce is provided that opportunity again. But the team does need to work on that dangerous movement in the attacking third. Set pieces will never be a question when you have Ivanschitz providing, but with your top four or five offensive players yet to get on the scorer’s sheet, more needs to be done in the final third. One of these games the bubble is going to burst and a Sounders opponent is going to leave with a thumping. Will it start Saturday?

Seattle Sounders FC Sporting Director Chris Henderson and Assistant Coach Ante Razov have been named nominees for the National Soccer Hall of Fame Class of 2016 elections, both included on the ballot in the Player category. Voting is taking place over the next three weeks for the Player, Veteran Player and Builder categories, with the results being announced shortly thereafter. Induction ceremony details for the Class of 2016 are being announced at a later date.
Razov spent 14 years in MLS from 19962009, including seven with the Chicago Fire and four with Chivas USA, and he ranks fourth all-time in MLS scoring with 114 goals. The Southern California-native also ranks 18th in league history with 66 assists across 262 appearances, as well as fifth all-time with 11 goals and 10 assists in the postseason, where his 35 appearances are ninth in MLS Cup Playoffs action. Razov was capped 25 times by the U.S. Men’s National Team, scoring six goals and helping the Stars and Stripes to the 2002 CONCACAF Gold Cup title. His first USMNT cap came in 1995 against Uruguay while still in college. Razov played four years at UCLA from 19921995 for Schmid, finishing his collegiate career with 40 goals and 29 assists. He was the Bruins’ leading scorer in 1993 and 1994 before finishing second in 1995. He joined Sounders FC as an Assistant Coach prior to the 2015 season.

Sounders Internationals Busy During Bye Week
Not every Sounders FC player was off during the club’s bye week from MLS play, as 2018 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Olympic qualifying resumed throughout the CONCACAF region. Eight Sounders represented four nations and six different squads overall in international action – four of which scored goals – as the Rave Green made their mark on the global stage. Clint Dempsey logged 180 minutes across a pair of rocky games for the USMNT against Guatemala, dropping the first match 2-0 in Guatemala City for the first time since 1988 before returning stateside for a return fixture at MAPFRE Stadium in Columbus. Dempsey knocked in the opening goal in a 4-0 rout, earning the Stars and Stripes a much-needed three points and giving Dempsey the all-time USMNT record with 14 goals in World Cup Qualifying action.

CLINT DEMPSEY’S TOP FIVE USMNT GOALS SINCE JOINING SOUNDERS FC Clint Dempsey is no stranger to scoring important goals. In Tuesday evening’s pivotal World Cup Qualifying match versus Guatemala, Dempsey’s goal opened the floodgates for the USMNT, which went on to win 4-0 and get back on track in the group stage of qualifying. The Seattle Sounders forward has had some beauties for the Red, White and Blue since joining the Rave Green and in honor of his most recent goal, we’re counting down his top five since coming to the Emerald City in 2013. #5 USA #5: USA 2, Honduras 1 | 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup | 7/7/15 WATCH The 2015 Gold Cup opened with considerable pressure on the Yanks to do well in their home country. In the team’s opening match, the USMNT answered the call on the back of Dempsey, who scored both goals in the match. In the 64th minute, Dempsey rose up above the Honduran back line to meet a Michael Bradley free kick and tipped it into the side netting for the 2-0 lead. It was the decisive goal of the match and allowed the US to survive a Honduran goal five minutes later. The US came away with the victory and began the tournament on right foot.
#4 USA 2, Panama 0 | International Friendly | 2/8/15 WATCH Though not the highest of stakes in an international friendly, there is no denying the skill it took for Dempsey to juke and then leap over the goalkeeper while still maintaining possession and the strength to fight off a Panamanian defender while he finished with the outside of his right foot.
#3 USA 1, Panama 1 | 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup | 7/25/15 WATCH In their last match of the 2015 Gold Cup, the USMNT found themselves in the third-place match against a formidable Panama side and down by a goal. In the 70th minute, Dempsey changed all that when he lobbed in a sliding finish off a pass from former Sounders teammate DeAndre Yedlin.
Dempsey picked up Golden Boot honors at the 2015 Gold Cup and he tied for second most all-time in the tournament’s history with 12.
#2 USA 2, Portugal 2 | 2014 FIFA World Cup | 6/22/14 WATCH The USMNT came into the 2014 World Cup facing a daunting task. Having been placed into the group of death with Germany, Portugal and Ghana, even most Americans didn’t believe the US could advance. Dempsey had other ideas. In the 81st minute against a Portugal side that many believed were contenders for the title, Dempsey stomached in a Graham Zusi cross to take the lead. It was a goal that ultimately led to the USA’s advance out of the group of death and into the Round of 16.
#1 USA 2, Ghana 1 | 2014 FIFA World Cup | 6/16/14 WATCH Ghana…the bane of American World Cup existence. Having knocked out the US in two consecutive World Cups, Dempsey and company were determined not to let it happen again. With this goal, scored within the first 35 seconds of their first match, the US made their intentions for the tournament very clear. It was the fastest goal in American World Cup history and made Dempsey the first American to score in three different World Cups. For many, it was a moment of gleaming hope they’ll never forget. Feast your eyes on the video below, with Dempsey’s goal at the 5:19 mark.

SOUNDERS FC ADDS VETERAN STRIKER HERCULEZ GOMEZ Sounders FC announced last week that they have signed former U.S. international and longtime Liga MX forward Herculez Gomez, adding a veteran option up top as the team looks to break out of a frustrating start to the 2016 MLS season. Gomez, 33, joins the club after scoring one goal in seven appearances for Toronto FC last year, his first year back in Major League Soccer since he carved out a comfortable career in Mexico, playing with six different teams from 2010-15 and leveraging his success there into a spot on the U.S. World Cup team in 2010. “Herculez is a veteran player who has played in some big games,” said Sounders FC Head Coach Sigi Schmid. “I look forward to his team play, hardworking attitude and his goal scoring as an addition to our team.” Originally from Oxnard, Calif., Gomez
made his MLS debut in 2003 with the LA Galaxy and later played for Colorado and Kansas City before he left for Mexico after the 2009 season. He’s scored 24 goals and added 13 assists over 131 career appearances in MLS, including a career-high 11 goals with LA in 2005, when he won an MLS Cup with the Galaxy. Gomez has previous ties to both the Sounders and head coach Sigi Schmid, forged more than a decade ago. Schmid signed Gomez to a contract with the Galaxy in 2002 before loaning him out to the NASL Sounders in 2003, scoring one goal in 17 appearances for the club and current Sounders assistant Brian Schmetzer. “We’re happy to add a player with Herculez’s experience to our current roster,” said Sounders FC General Manager & President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey. “He has done well in training

and we look forward to seeing what he can bring to the team.” He’s also found success against the Sounders, most notably while playing with Mexican side Santos Laguna three years ago. Gomez scored the lone goal of a 1-0 win for Santos at CenturyLink Field in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League semifinals in April 2013, and Santos went on to eliminate the Sounders 2-0 on aggregate. He also scored three goals against the Sounders over the teams’ two-leg series in the CCL quarterfinals in 2012, which Santos won, 7-3. internationally. Gomez became the first American player to lead a foreign league in scoring when he scored 10 goals in 15 games for Puebla, and that success led him to a spot on head coach Bob Bradley’s U.S. World Cup roster in 2010. Gomez has scored six goals in 24 career caps with the USMNT, but hasn’t featured for the squad squad since March 2013. He appeared in eight World Cup qualifying games in the buildup to Brazil, but failed the make the final World Cup roster. Gomez will be available when the Sounders seek their first win of the season at home against the Montreal Impact on April 2, following the FIFA international break.
