Sounders FC (2-4-1, 7 points) returns to the Xbox Pitch at CenturyLink Field to take on the Columbus Crew (2-32, 8 points) on Saturday afternoon. Last Saturday, the Rave Green fell on the road to the Colorado Rapids 3-1. Jordan Morris narrowed the score to 2-1 with his second goal in as many matches in the 63rd minute, but the Rapids pulled away in the 86th

minute with a goal by substitute Kevin Doyle. Crew SC has won two straight matches, each at home, with a 1-0 victory against the Houston Dynamo last week and a 3-2 result against New York City FC on April 16. The defending Eastern Conference champion has struggled on the road this season, recording two losses and two draws as the visitor in 2016.

DID YOU KNOW??? After scoring in the second half against the Rapids last Saturday, Jordan Morris became the club’s all-time goals leader for Homegrown Players in regular season action. Morris has netted goals in each of the past two games, which puts him tied for the team-lead with defender Chad Marshall this season. MATCHDAY · 3

MATCH PREVIEW:

Seattle Sounders FC set to host Columbus Crew SC Everything you need to know for Saturday’s clash at CenturyLink Field by Cameron Rizzardini

WHEN AND WHERE: Kickoff is Saturday at 1:00 p.m. PT on the Xbox Pitch at CenturyLink Field.

WHERE TO WATCH: The game

is airing on JOEtv and ROOT SPORTS (outside Seattle), with a pregame show beginning at 12:30 p.m. PT.

WHERE TO LISTEN: The game is also being aired on KIRO 97.3 FM in English and on El Rey 1360AM in Spanish. RECORDS AND STANDINGS: Sounders (2-4-1, 7

pts., ninth in Western Conference), Crew SC (2-3-2, 8 pts., sixth in Eastern Conference)

MAN IN THE MIDDLE: The head referee for this match will be Juan Guzman, who has handed out 12 yellow cards in his two MLS games this season. ALL-TIME HISTORY: The all-time series between the two teams is very tight, with a slight edge toward the Sounders, who are 4-3-3 against Crew SC since 2009. Columbus, however, have won their last two meetings against the Rave Green, one last season in Columbus by a 3-2 scoreline and one in 2014 at CenturyLink by a score of 2-1.

6 · MATCHDAY

UNFAMILIAR TERRITORY: After a promising

three-game unbeaten streak, the Sounders fell to the Colorado Rapids last weekend, snapping their momentum and plunging them back into ninth place in the Western Conference. Columbus was the MLS Cup runner-up last season and considered one of the league’s best going into 2016. Like the Sounders, Crew SC finds themselves in the bottom half of the table and struggling to meet expectations.

MORRIS ROLLING: Homegrown

forward Jordan Morris scored again over the weekend, giving him two goals in the past two games. The Seattle youngster scored his first professional goal on April 16 against the Philadelphia Union after going scoreless over his first five games. After early concerns that the young forward would not live up to the hype, it seems Morris is now settling in to life on the professional level.

KEI IS KEY: Columbus has six

points over its last two matches and is starting to look like the side expected at the beginning of the season. Forward Kei Kamara has also scored in both of the last two matches after only scoring once in the first five, during which the Black & Gold went 0-3-2. Kamara, who was the 2015 Golden Boot runner up, is key to success for Crew SC and will be a serious point of interest for the Seattle defense.

INJURY UPDATE: The Sounders played without both of their DP forwards last weekend in Colorado due to injuries picked up in training that week, but the club expects both Clint Dempsey [groin] and Nelson Valdez [hamstring] to be available against Columbus. Midfielder Erik Friberg made his first appearance last weekend since going down in week two with an MCL strain. He came in off the bench in the 50th minute and barring any setbacks in training, should be making his return to the starting lineup this weekend. The only other question mark is midfielder Andreas Ivanschitz, who skipped training on Monday after suffering a thigh strain in Colorado. CAUGHT RED CARDED: Captain Brad Evans was

sent off on Saturday by head referee Jorge Gonzalez shortly after the Rapids’ Kevin Doyle scored from a noticeably offside position in the 86th minute. Evans explained what happened after the game, but this much is clear: with Román Torres still months away from his return, defender Zach Scott will likely be

expected to step in for Evans, as he did twice earlier this season when Evans was sidelined with a shoulder injury.

THE STORY IN NUMBERS: Seattle and Columbus

are separated by just one point. They have both scored seven goals and put 32 shots on target. The Sounders have conceded one more goal than Crew SC and have taken four less total shots. The numbers tell a tale of limited separation and a tightly contested match. The biggest discrepancy is in fouls suffered, for which the Sounders have a hearty 98 and Columbus a mere 69.

COLUMBUS-SEATTLE CONNECTIONS: Evans, Head

Coach Sigi Schmid and defender Chad Marshall are all former members of Columbus Crew SC, now in leadership roles for the Sounders. In 2008, Schmid, Evans and Marshall won an MLS Cup and Supporters Shield together with Columbus. Crew SC defender Tyson Wahl, meanwhile, played for Sounders FC from 2009-2011, appearing in 39 games for the Rave Green.

MATCHDAY STORYLINES Radio Play-by-Play Commentator Matt Johnson tells you his three storylines to follow in tonight’s match vs. Columbus Crew SC The squad needs a result Heading into Colorado, the Sounders had a run of three unbeaten contests. That came crashing down when Pablo Mastroeni’s men came away with a 3-1 win at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. After the match Head Coach Sigi Schmid was critical of his team, but also said that it started with him. With the Sounders playing three of their next four at CenturyLink Field, the perfect time to claim three points and get back on track is this Saturday vs. Crew SC.

goals, but he needs to be paired with the two Designated Players to form the Sounders’ most dangerous options up front. Both were missing in Colorado and the attack was stymied often. With Dempsey’s creativity and Valdez’s continual hard work, things will eventually open up for the frustrated offense. Both should be healthy and ready to attack the Crew SC’s back line.

Get the veteran strikers back on the pitch While the speed of Oalex Anderson and the veteran leadership of Herculez Gomez can be entertaining and compelling to watch, the need for Clint Dempsey and Nelson Valdez to be out on the pitch is obvious. Jordan Morris is getting the rewards of his hard work the past two games with two

Everyone remain calm No, it hasn’t been the start that everyone was looking for. As a matter of fact, nobody saw this coming. The team nor the front office will make excuses, and I won’t

either. Schmid called last Saturday’s performance the worst of the year and I’m not going to argue with the hall of famer. However, I still look at small moments throughout the season that could have us talking about a completely different start. Yes, we are moving into the schedule where it’s still not “early in the season,” but again there are still 27 matches left and plenty of talent on this team to make this slow start be forgotten come July. Again, the Rave Green play three of the next four at home. Let’s turn this around.

On the Board After failing to find the net for first month and half of his first professional season, Sounders FC Homegrown Player Jordan Morris comes into Saturday’s matchup against Columbus Crew SC with a two-match scoring streak and tied for the team-lead in goals scored. On April 16 against Philadelphia, Morris made a well-timed run behind the defense and found the end of a lofted through-ball from Andreas Ivanschitz. The speedy forward took one touch before poking a low shot past the on-rushing Union keeper and celebrated his first professional tally in front of the hometown Sounders faithful. The Rave Green went on to win the game 2-1, with Morris’ strike proving to be the game-winner.

WATCH: Morris scores first career goal The following week, Morris provided the lone bright-spot in an otherwise disappointing 3-1 loss at the Colorado Rapids. Down 2-0 in the 63rd minute, Morris gathered a pass from Cristian Roldan at the top of the box. The Mercer Island native drew the defense to the right and delivered a low shot inside the far post, just beyond the outstretched hands of Rapids keeper Zac MacMath.

Despite Early Struggles, Seattle and Columbus Offer Tantalizing Matchup By Will Parchman Life for an MLS club is ultimately less about stopping losing skids before they start and more about adequately dealing with them when they arrive. So it goes during life in one of the most topsy-turvy leagues in the world. The Sounders are currently dealing with life on the wrong side of the playoff line. It’s so early in the season still that the mere mention of the playoffs is hardly worth acknowledging, but it’s also true that missed points in April and May can ultimately cost you playoff seeding come October. In that sense, the team’s deflating 3-1 loss to the Colorado Rapids last weekend has already become a topic of conversation. What now?

Because there is quite literally no time to breathe in this league. Columbus Crew SC is coming to town. The Rapids result dropped the Sounders’ record to 2-4-1 in their first seven games, good for ninth of 10 teams in the Western Conference over that span. After the Rapids loss, Sounders coach Sigi Schmid noted that it was the team’s worst performance of the season. That means it goes without saying that where the team goes from here is of vital importance. The problems that require addressing splinter off in several directions, but there remains one glaring issue that needs immediate attention. From an analytical perspective, the Sounders simply aren’t good enough in front of goal. Seattle is sixth in MLS in share of possession (52 percent) and second behind only Columbus in successful pass ratio at 82 percent. That tells you two things: Seattle can control the tempo of almost any match, and it can successfully knit together passes. But attacks were not built upon those two pillars alone, and the fact that Seattle is in the bottom half of the league in both aggregate shots and shots on target means the team simply isn’t pulling the trigger enough and in dangerous enough areas.

DEMPSEY

The good news is that key attacking pieces Clint Dempsey and Nelson Valdez, both of whom missed the Colorado loss, practiced this week. The team dearly missed Dempsey against

MATCHDAY · 23

Colorado, and much of its timidity in the attacking third was down to the U.S. national teamer’s absence. As for Valdez, his status seems to be in heavier doubt, but even a stint off the bench would be a boon to the attack. The bad news? The status of Andreas Ivanschitz this weekend is simultaneously in doubt. As we’ve documented before, Ivanschitz has been the most integral piece of Seattle attack this season. He has three of the team’s four total assists this year, and a dizzying number of dangerous moments funneled through his dangerous left foot. If Ivanschitz can’t go, Columbus gets that much more dangerous.

Columbus’ flashier elements get most of the publicity, and for not insignificant reasons. Federico Higuain is one of the most electric creative attacking midfielders in MLS history, and his influence in the attacking third is without doubt. Kei Kamara is one of the five most consistently dangerous strikers in MLS. And the wide combination of Ethan Finlay and Justin Meram is unquestionably effective.

And make no mistake, despite a slow start to the season this Crew side is every bit as scary as the one that lost to Portland in MLS Cup in 2015.

HIGUAIN

TRAPP But there’s little doubt that Crew SC’s engine room is primarily fed by Wil Trapp. The talented American defensive midfielder has been a key cog for Columbus over the past couple years, but the 23-year-old maestro has taken another step forward in 2016. He’s currently second in MLS in average passes per game with 72, and his completion average of 88.3 percent puts him in the league’s top 10. Perhaps unsurprisingly based on the

24 · MATCHDAY

technically efficient style of play Gregg Berhalter’s engendered in this side, No. 1 is occupied by Trapp’s defensive midfield partner Mohammed Saeid. Trapp prefers to drop in between deeply split center backs to collect possession as the nexus of almost every meaningful attack. In this way, the Sounders know they’ll need to press higher than usual out of the midfield to deny Trapp the oxygen to operate. If left to his own devices, the Black & Gold are extremely difficult to stop. And cutting them off at the head means removing as much danger from Trapp’s feet as possible. As for Seattle, coach Sigi Schmid will continue tinkering in a clogged, somewhat disjointed midfield to find a combination that works. Erik Friberg’s

return in a sub role last weekend could presage a move in the middle. Since Friberg is more of a forward rover than recent starter Cristian Roldan, that could be an attack-minded change we see in the coming week. And as ever, Dempsey’s fungible role could see him fit in anywhere from the central midfield to left winger to striker. The bottom line for Seattle is things aren’t quite as bleak as the early season table would seem to indicate. Seattle continues to out-pass teams, continues to build attacks and continues to get spurts of quality individual performances. But the Sounders will need to find a spark in front of goal in order to snap out of its funk and make this summer much more pleasant than the last.
