Sounders FC returns to the Xbox Pitch at CenturyLink Field Sunday evening to take on Real Salt Lake in a nationally-televised contest on FS1. Seattle comes off a 3-1 victory at Orlando City SC on August 7, becoming the first team in MLS to beat the Lions at Camping World Stadium in 17 matches dating back to July of last season. Forward Clint Dempsey scored all three goals for the Rave Green, with Jordan Morris and Nico Lodeiro each providing two assists as all three players earned MLS Team of the Week honors. Real Salt Lake visits the Emerald City after earning a 3-1 home win last Saturday versus the Chicago Fire. With a 10-7-7 record, RSL currently sits in a tie for third place in the Western Conference at 37 points. Sunday’s contest marks the second of three league meetings between the two sides this season. On March 12, RSL came away with a 2-1 win on a late goal at Rio Tinto Stadium, then they will meet once more in the season finale on October 23 at CenturyLink Field. Since taking over the managerial role on July 26, Interim Head Coach Brian Schmetzer is unbeaten in his two matches manning the sidelines. Prior to last week’s road win in Central Florida, Seattle drew at home with the LA Galaxy by a score of 1-1 on July 31.
DID YOU KNOW??? Seattle forward Clint Dempsey became the first player in club history with two career hat tricks in a Sounders FC uniform. The USMNT veteran netted all three scores in the team’s 3-1 win over Orlando City SC on August 7. Previously, Dempsey scored his first MLS hat trick in a 4-4 draw versus the Portland Timbers at Providence Park in April 2014. The other players to record a hat trick for Sounders FC are Blaise Nkufo, Lamar Neagle, David Estrada and Fredy Montero.

All you need to know when Sounders FC takes on Real Salt Lake The Seattle Sounders welcome Real Salt Lake to CenturyLink Field this weekend for the first time this season. Here’s a breakdown of everything you need to know about the game.

on FS1. On the radio, Sunday’s match will air on KIRO Radio 97.3 FM and El Rey 1360 AM in Spanish, with pregame shows for both beginning at 3:30 p.m. PT.
RECORDS AND STANDINGS: Sounders FC (7-12-3, 24 pts., 9th in Western Conference), Real Salt Lake (10-7-7, 37 pts., 3rd in Western Conference).
attack has been reborn with the arrival of new Designated Player Nicolás Lodeiro. On Sunday at Orlando, Lodeiro unlocked the attacking duo of forwards Clint Dempsey and Jordan Morris for three goals and three points. The Sounders will need to maintain this new potent attack if they are to make the playoffs for the eighth straight season with only 12 games remaining.
ALL-TIME HISTORY: The
FUERZA ROMAN: The long awaited return of defender Román Torres is nearly upon us. While there is no confirmed date when he will be back on the gameday roster, the Panamanian defender has been in full training with the team for a week and with another week of training under his belt by Sunday, his return is a possibility.
LATE DRAMATICS IN SLC: Sparks flew in the match
INJURY UPDATE: Midfielder Erik Friberg (ankle sprain) sat out last weekend’s match against Orlando, and his status for this weekend is unclear. On the RSL side, leading goal scorer Yura Movsisyan (hip flexor) has

been absent from the lineup since July 22. Also present on the injury report are midfielders Sunday Stephen (facial fracture) and Jordan Allen (adductor strain).
THE NEW NO. 1: RSL perennial net-minder Nick Rimando made history over the weekend, recording his 181st win, the most in MLS history. The 3-1 win over the Chicago Fire put Rimando ahead of Kevin Hartman’s previous standing record of 180.
BATTLE FOR THE BOUNTY: With 35 goals scored on
the season, RSL have one of the more dangerous offenses in the league. However, with 34 goals conceded (second most in the West) they leave themselves open and vulnerable at the back. If Seattle can put in a similar performance to last weekend, the goals are there for the taking, but defender Chad Marshall and Co. will need to be sharp on their end against the likes of Joao Plata and Javier Morales.

MATCHDAY STORYLINES Radio Play-by-Play Commentator Matt Johnson tells you his three storylines to follow in this afternoon’s match vs. Real Salt Lake.
Lodeiro and New Formation = 1-0-1 Quite simply, this is a different team. With Nicolas Lodeiro pulling the strings, the Sounders offense has been given a breath of fresh air. In the home LA match on July 31, the Uruguayan midfielder touched the ball 124 times which was the fourth highest single-match total in MLS this year. On Sunday in Orlando, he totaled 71 touches, but the amount of dangerous moves that came from them propelled Seattle to a dismantling of Orlando City’s back four and provided Jordan Morris ample opportunities to use his strength and speed. Along with the new midfielder is Interim Head Coach Brian Schmetzer’s
8 · MATCHDAY
decision to install and stick with a 4-2-3-1 formation. Having Cristian Roldan and Ozzie Alonzo holding in front of the back four has given the four Sounders up front the ability to press the opposing defense and keep them honest. In saying that, during the Orlando match the outside wings, Lodeiro and Ivanschitz were taking turns coming back to play defense numerous times. On occasion, Morris came back as well. Team defense is what wins in this league and the Sounders have shown this in the last two matches.
Javier Morales is not done If you’ve counted Morales out as an influential midfielder in MLS, you’ve made a mistake. Yes, the man from Buenos Aires is 36 and might not be the same guy that provided club with double digit assists four times in his career (he has four in 20 appearances this year). But in the last four matches, he has three goals and two assists with the season approaching the stretch run. In Saturday’s 3-1 win over Chicago, he looked like his old self. He dominated the middle and was involved in many of RSL’s dangerous moments. With RSL up 2-1, the Fire had
two huge chances to tie the match in the second half. After those chances slipped past Chicago, Morales put the game away with his second goal of the match in the 64th. You’ll recognize the rest of the names who come to visit CenturyLink Field on Sunday: Beckerman, Rimando, Wingert, and Plata. Another great Western Conference clash for the Rave Green.
Playoffs still in reach Okay, maybe I am a glass half-full guy, but honestly I feel the playoffs are still within reach for Seattle. With 12 games left and 11 against the West, the Sounders really still control their own destiny. There is never a sure thing in any level of soccer, but the only game vs. the Eastern Conference is a home match against Chicago. There remains one match left with FC Dallas in Dallas, but the majority of the remaining fixtures are between teams that are between our level and the red line. Two against Houston, Portland, and Vancouver should give Sounders fans hope for a knockout match at the minimum…I know I am.

ALL-TIME SERIES To say these two teams are familiar with each other would be an understatement. Sunday’s nationallytelevised match on FS1 marks the 25th all-time meeting across all competitions between Sounders FC and Real Salt Lake, with the two sides even at 9-9-6 since Seattle joined MLS in 2009. The only opponent the Rave Green have faced more often is the LA Galaxy, with a whopping 29 meetings across all competitions. In addition to 18 regular-season meetings, which the Claret & Cobalt hold the advantage at 8-6-4, Seattle and RSL have met four times across two series in the MLS Cup Playoffs. RSL advanced past Sounders FC 3-2 on aggregate in the 2010 Western Conference Semifinals after a decimating 3-0 first leg win. The two sides met again the following season, with Seattle advancing to the conference finals for the first time in
franchise with a 1-0 aggregate victory. After 170 minutes of scoreless action, Mario Martinez clinched the win for Seattle with a stunning volley in the 81st minute of the second leg at Rio Tinto Stadium. Outside of MLS action, Sounders FC has met RSL twice in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, including Seattle’s penalty kick victory earlier this season in Utah. Tyler Miller was the star that night, with eight saves in regulation and two more in the PK shootout to secure advancement to the tournament’s quarterfinals for the Rave Green. SOUNDERS FC VS. Morris Building Chemistry with DPs Lodeiro, Dempsey
By Ari Liljenwall Seattle Sounders forward Jordan Morris became one of the mostanticipated Homegrown signings in MLS history mainly due to his propensity for scoring goals. But he didn’t need to score any in order to register arguably his best all-around game as a pro in Seattle’s 3-1 romp over Orlando City FC at Camping World Stadium on Sunday – a development that could prove scary for opposing MLS defenses should it become a recurring trend. Morris was all over the place throughout Sunday’s match, notching assists on two of teammate Clint

Dempsey’s three goals – a total that could very easily have jumped to four if not for two near misses from Nelson Valdez and Alvaro Fernandez that each clanged off the goalpost. “Jordan played awesome tonight,” Dempsey said after the game. “Thought he could have had five assists.” Speaking with reporters after Seattle’s Tuesday practice at Starfire Sports, Morris said Sunday’s breakout could at least partially be attributed to an increased comfort level with Dempsey. “We’ve had to learn how each other likes to play and our tendencies,” Morris said. “I think we’re definitely getting it down. I know now he loves
to make that late run after the ball slips through. We found him a couple times with that in the game. Our relationship is still building every day so it’s been good.”
I make those runs,” Morris said. “That’s my game. I like to stay on that last line and just look to get behind. He can find those balls because he has really good vision. He’s been a great addition.”
The nearly instantaneous chemistry Morris has established with newly signed midfielder Nicolas Lodeiro also has to be considered an equally intriguing sign for the Sounders.
Of course, Morris’s preeminent calling card is still his ability to find the back of the net and his finishing touch has proven elusive in recent weeks. Asked on Tuesday what he would like to improve on as he navigates his way through the rest of his rookie season, he pointed to exactly that.
In their brief two-game stint together since Seattle signed Lodeiro as a Designated Player late last month, the pair have already showcased skill sets that appear highly complimentary, with Lodeiro using his uncanny vision and pinpoint delivery to repeatedly pick out the speedy Morris shooting behind the defense. “Right from the beginning, [Lodeiro] told me he’s going to look for me when
“My finishing [is the biggest area of improvement],” Morris said. “Just keep working on that and looking to be a hold-up guy sometimes if I’m playing up top by myself, looking to hold the ball up and link and find Clint and Nico underneath. But my finishing I think is the main thing I want to keep working on.”

Roldan Remains Constant In His Sophomore Season With Sounders FC By Will Parchman The joy in the moment was plain to see, laid bare for the some 40,000 in attendance watching Cristian Roldan score his first goal for the Seattle Sounders. Andreas Ivanschitz’s free kick swung into the meat of the box, and Roldan’s head was there to greet it, rising above FC Dallas’s Aubrey David and beating Jesse Gonzalez across the line. Roldan wheeled away with a broad smile creasing the corners of his mouth, soon to be mobbed by Tony Alfaro and then everyone else. It took Roldan until his 39th appearance in Rave Green, but the goal finally fell. There was something else in that smile, a glint of relief about it beaming through from the back. It was a subtle conveyance that yes, Roldan has been good for a good long while now for the Sounders. If all it took was a goal to open the floodgates to that notion, then he’d just gotten it. At 21, Roldan’s become the youngest consistent contributor on a Sounders team that’s had far deeper worries than whether the young University of
Washington product could hold his own. Since joining the team after a 16th overall selection in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft, Roldan’s played both wide right and centrally in a 4-4-2, as both the main attacking midfielder and one of the two pivots in a 4-2-3-1 and as

one of the three central dominos in the 4-3-3. And now for two different coaches, just miles away from where he made his national name at UW. If Roldan was a hot up-and-coming prospect after his rookie campaign in 2015, he’s a full-fledged starter now. When Seattle hosts a resurgent Real Salt Lake side this weekend, nobody in Rave Green has been more consistently quality over the last 16 months than Roldan. Roldan arrived in Seattle before the 2015 season with no amount of uncertainty swirling about his positional status. He’d been the primary creative hub at UW, but most MLS scouts saw him as more of a sitting midfielder following the MLS Combine. In fact, it was that event that some attributed to his drop in the draft, which allowed Seattle to shrewdly trade up and snag the Generation adidas player with the 16th overall pick. It was, unequivocally, the steal of the draft for a player most expected to go inside the top five.
24 · MATCHDAY
Roldan gradually settled into life with the Sounders, earning a rotating starting spot during the summer of 2015 and entering the 2016 season with more positional certainty. After being tried higher and wider, Roldan rapidly developed into a running partner for the usually deeper Osvaldo Alonso. Roldan could, ideally, connect the lines between Alonso and whoever dropped. When Gonzalo Pineda retired after the 2015 season, even more playing time opened. Since then, Roldan’s been a calm, quiet force casually rebuffing attacks and restarting them while inviting little individual glory. Roldan’s role is not particularly glamorous. He uses his preternatural body positioning to shield possession, his dogged pursuit to clean out attacks and his unnaturally steady ball control to stoke build-ups. But he does none of the glamor work of unlocking defenses like Nicolas Lodeiro, or serving up dead balls on a platter like Andreas Ivanschitz, or crashing in brilliant free kicks like Clint Dempsey. Even at the back, his
tackles rarely invite the kind of notoriety Alonso’s received. Most of his heavy lifting is dirty work that doesn’t show up on stat sheets and rarely makes highlight reels. Perhaps, that is, until that goal against FC Dallas opened more up to the reality of how good Roldan’s truly been this year. Roldan’s efficiency has never been in doubt, so his 84 percent passing success rate on a quality 45 passes per game is perhaps no surprise. But in 1,562 minutes this year, he’s averaging a pair of tackles per game, an interception per game in addition to the work he does building attacks, which is probably his greatest asset to the whole. Roldan’s overall utility was never more obvious than when he stepped into a starting role after the departure of former coach Sigi Schmid two weeks ago. In two games under interim Brian Schmetzer, Roldan has been the choice to pair with Alonso as the holding midfielders in the 4-2-3-1. He’s benefitted from a lingering ankle injury that has plagued midfielder Erik Friberg, but in those two games, Seattle’s snagged four points, one of which came courtesy of a goal Roldan scored.
2015 season. Torres arrived that August and momentarily took his spot in the XI, but Torres’ injury made that sample size dramatically small. What happens to the lineup when Torres returns - an eventuality that now seems only a week or two away - is still unclear. But it would be a surprise to see Evans, the team’s emotional leader and unquestioned captain, relegated to the bench. The far more likely eventuality is that Torres returns to partner with Chad Marshall, a pairing that was quite good in limited minutes in 2015, and Evans is bumped back into the midfield, where he’s more comfortable anyway. That would pair Evans and Alonso together at the base of the midfield in the 4-2-3-1. The odd man out in that scenario is Roldan. Quiet, massively productive Roldan. That, though, is still some time away. For now, Roldan can only control what’s in front of him, and in that respect few have done more to establish themselves over the past two season than the unflappable Roldan.
Even still, Roldan’s future in the starting XI is hardly certain. The return of Roman Torres from an ACL injury that’s kept him off the field for nearly a full year will dramatically change the balance of the back line. By extension, the midfield will feel the effects. After a decorated career as a central midfielder (and a national team career that’s featured him at right back), team captain Brad Evans moved to center back to quality reviews for the
