Seattle Sounders FC vs. Real Salt Lake
August 14, 2016 · CenturyLink Field
PRESENTED BY
Sounders FC returns to the Xbox Pitch at CenturyLink Field Sunday evening to take on Real Salt Lake in a nationally-televised contest on FS1. Seattle comes off a 3-1 victory at Orlando City SC on August 7, becoming the first team in MLS to beat the Lions at Camping World Stadium in 17 matches dating back to July of last season. Forward Clint Dempsey scored all three goals for the Rave Green, with Jordan Morris and Nico Lodeiro each providing two assists as all three players earned MLS Team of the Week honors. Real Salt Lake visits the Emerald City after earning a 3-1 home win last Saturday versus the Chicago Fire. With a 10-7-7 record, RSL currently sits in a tie for third place in the Western Conference at 37 points. Sunday’s contest marks the second of three league meetings between the two sides this season. On March 12, RSL came away with a 2-1 win on a late goal at Rio Tinto Stadium, then they will meet once more in the season finale on October 23 at CenturyLink Field. Since taking over the managerial role on July 26, Interim Head Coach Brian Schmetzer is unbeaten in his two matches manning the sidelines. Prior to last week’s road win in Central Florida, Seattle drew at home with the LA Galaxy by a score of 1-1 on July 31.
DID YOU KNOW??? Seattle forward Clint Dempsey became the first player in club history with two career hat tricks in a Sounders FC uniform. The USMNT veteran netted all three scores in the team’s 3-1 win over Orlando City SC on August 7. Previously, Dempsey scored his first MLS hat trick in a 4-4 draw versus the Portland Timbers at Providence Park in April 2014. The other players to record a hat trick for Sounders FC are Blaise Nkufo, Lamar Neagle, David Estrada and Fredy Montero.

All you need to know when Sounders FC takes on Real Salt Lake The Seattle Sounders welcome Real Salt Lake to CenturyLink Field this weekend for the first time this season. Here’s a breakdown of everything you need to know about the game.

on FS1. On the radio, Sunday’s match will air on KIRO Radio 97.3 FM and El Rey 1360 AM in Spanish, with pregame shows for both beginning at 3:30 p.m. PT.
RECORDS AND STANDINGS: Sounders FC (7-12-3, 24 pts., 9th in Western Conference), Real Salt Lake (10-7-7, 37 pts., 3rd in Western Conference).
attack has been reborn with the arrival of new Designated Player Nicolás Lodeiro. On Sunday at Orlando, Lodeiro unlocked the attacking duo of forwards Clint Dempsey and Jordan Morris for three goals and three points. The Sounders will need to maintain this new potent attack if they are to make the playoffs for the eighth straight season with only 12 games remaining.
ALL-TIME HISTORY: The
FUERZA ROMAN: The long awaited return of defender Román Torres is nearly upon us. While there is no confirmed date when he will be back on the gameday roster, the Panamanian defender has been in full training with the team for a week and with another week of training under his belt by Sunday, his return is a possibility.
LATE DRAMATICS IN SLC: Sparks flew in the match
INJURY UPDATE: Midfielder Erik Friberg (ankle sprain) sat out last weekend’s match against Orlando, and his status for this weekend is unclear. On the RSL side, leading goal scorer Yura Movsisyan (hip flexor) has

been absent from the lineup since July 22. Also present on the injury report are midfielders Sunday Stephen (facial fracture) and Jordan Allen (adductor strain).
THE NEW NO. 1: RSL perennial net-minder Nick Rimando made history over the weekend, recording his 181st win, the most in MLS history. The 3-1 win over the Chicago Fire put Rimando ahead of Kevin Hartman’s previous standing record of 180.
BATTLE FOR THE BOUNTY: With 35 goals scored on
the season, RSL have one of the more dangerous offenses in the league. However, with 34 goals conceded (second most in the West) they leave themselves open and vulnerable at the back. If Seattle can put in a similar performance to last weekend, the goals are there for the taking, but defender Chad Marshall and Co. will need to be sharp on their end against the likes of Joao Plata and Javier Morales.

MATCHDAY STORYLINES Radio Play-by-Play Commentator Matt Johnson tells you his three storylines to follow in this afternoon’s match vs. Real Salt Lake.
Lodeiro and New Formation = 1-0-1 Quite simply, this is a different team. With Nicolas Lodeiro pulling the strings, the Sounders offense has been given a breath of fresh air. In the home LA match on July 31, the Uruguayan midfielder touched the ball 124 times which was the fourth highest single-match total in MLS this year. On Sunday in Orlando, he totaled 71 touches, but the amount of dangerous moves that came from them propelled Seattle to a dismantling of Orlando City’s back four and provided Jordan Morris ample opportunities to use his strength and speed. Along with the new midfielder is Interim Head Coach Brian Schmetzer’s
8 · MATCHDAY
decision to install and stick with a 4-2-3-1 formation. Having Cristian Roldan and Ozzie Alonzo holding in front of the back four has given the four Sounders up front the ability to press the opposing defense and keep them honest. In saying that, during the Orlando match the outside wings, Lodeiro and Ivanschitz were taking turns coming back to play defense numerous times. On occasion, Morris came back as well. Team defense is what wins in this league and the Sounders have shown this in the last two matches.
Javier Morales is not done If you’ve counted Morales out as an influential midfielder in MLS, you’ve made a mistake. Yes, the man from Buenos Aires is 36 and might not be the same guy that provided club with double digit assists four times in his career (he has four in 20 appearances this year). But in the last four matches, he has three goals and two assists with the season approaching the stretch run. In Saturday’s 3-1 win over Chicago, he looked like his old self. He dominated the middle and was involved in many of RSL’s dangerous moments. With RSL up 2-1, the Fire had
two huge chances to tie the match in the second half. After those chances slipped past Chicago, Morales put the game away with his second goal of the match in the 64th. You’ll recognize the rest of the names who come to visit CenturyLink Field on Sunday: Beckerman, Rimando, Wingert, and Plata. Another great Western Conference clash for the Rave Green.
Playoffs still in reach Okay, maybe I am a glass half-full guy, but honestly I feel the playoffs are still within reach for Seattle. With 12 games left and 11 against the West, the Sounders really still control their own destiny. There is never a sure thing in any level of soccer, but the only game vs. the Eastern Conference is a home match against Chicago. There remains one match left with FC Dallas in Dallas, but the majority of the remaining fixtures are between teams that are between our level and the red line. Two against Houston, Portland, and Vancouver should give Sounders fans hope for a knockout match at the minimum…I know I am.
