Sounders FC continues its two-match homestand with a full-stadium contest versus the Portland Timbers on Sunday evening. The Rave Green head into the fixture on a three-match unbeaten streak, including two consecutive wins, after defeating Real Salt Lake by a score of 2-1 last Sunday. Midfielder Nico Lodeiro recorded one goal and one assist, as the Designated Player became the first player in club history to register at least three assists and one goal in his first three MLS matches with Seattle.
five points behind the Timbers, but holds two games in hand. Portland is winless in 12 road matches in 2016 (0-6-6 record).
Interim Head Coach Brian Schmetzer is unbeaten in his three matches since taking over managerial duties on July 26, but has yet to face a Cascadia opponent. Portland, the defending MLS Cup champion, enters Sunday’s contest in sixth place in the Western Conference with 32 points. Seattle sits
DID YOU KNOW??? Seattle has never lost at home to Portland in MLS play. The Rave Green have hosted Portland on seven occasions since 2011, posting a 5-0-2 record and outscoring the visitors 11-3. Last season, Seattle won 1-0 in April before topping Portland 2-1 in August. On August 25, 2013, Sounders FC defeated Portland 1-0 in front of 67,385 fans at CenturyLink Field, the highest-attended soccer match in club history and the secondlargest crowd in MLS history for a standalone match.

All you need to know when Sounders FC takes on Portland in full-stadium clash The Seattle Sounders square off against their chief rival Portland Timbers for the only meeting at CenturyLink Field this season. Here’s a breakdown of everything you need to know about the game. by Cam Rizzardini
WHEN AND WHERE: Kickoff is Sunday, August 21 at 6:30 p.m. PT at CenturyLink Field.
WHERE TO WATCH: The game
will be telecast nationally on FS1. The game will be aired on KIRO Radio 97.3 FM with a pregame show beginning at 6:00 p.m. PT and El Rey 1360AM in Spanish.
RECORDS AND STANDINGS: Sounders (8-12-3,
27 pts., 9th in Western Conference), Timbers (8-9-8, 32 pts., 6th in Western Conference).
ALL-TIME HISTORY: In this deep and illustrious rivalry, Seattle owns a 47-34-12 all-time record dating back to the first time the sides met in 1975. The Sounders are 7-4-4 against their neighbors to the south in MLS play. LAST TIME AROUND: A new Designated Player, a new head coach, a new formation and a new lease on life. Forget what you thought you knew about Seattle vs. Portland in 2016. This is a different Sounders team than the one that fell 3-1 in the Rose City just one month ago. RAVE GREEN ROLLING: Since the arrival of DP midfielder Nicolás Lodeiro, the Sounders have been reborn. After a 6-12-2 start to the

season, the Sounders are on a 2-0-1 run and are finally looking like a playoff contender. The Rave Green have also doubled their scoring, averaging just one goal per game in the first 20 games to two goals in the last three games. The Timbers, meanwhile, are 1-2-0 in their last three and holding onto the last playoff spot in the Western Conference.
LODEIRO VS VALERI: For the first time in 2016, the Sounders have an answer for Diego Valeri. Lodeiro has been exceptional since the day he walked into training in late July and has been to the Sounders what Valeri is to the Timbers. Valeri is having a sensational year for the Timbers, with 10 goals and five assists. If the first three games of Lodeiro’s MLS career is any indication, he is poised to have a better debut than even Valeri, and arguably one of the best debut seasons in MLS history. In Valeri’s first three starts he tallied one goal, no assists and the Timbers went 0-1-2. In Lodeiro’s first three starts, he has one goal and three assists, and the Sounders are 2-0-1 with him on the field. INJURY UPDATE: Román Torres is looking closer to his return after battling back from an ACL tear last September. Interim head coach Brian Schmetzer has been tight-lipped about the return of the Panamanian
international and his appearance this Sunday is still unclear. On the Portland side, defender Nat Borchers is out for the year with a ruptured Achilles tendon. There is also a slew of Timbers in the questionable category featuring Zarek Valentin, Ben Zemanski, Darren Mattocks and Liam Ridgewell.
TIMBERS TO NOTE: Forward
Fanendo Adi is having another Golden Boot contending season, with 11 goals in 24 appearances, just four goals behind leader Sebastian Giovinco of Toronto FC. Goalkeeper Jake Gleeson
has officially won the starting spot over Adam Kwarasey who was sold to Norwegian club Rosenborg BK in midJuly. Gleeson is currently third in total saves in MLS.
BACK-TO-BACK: Well, almost.
After facing off on Sunday, the Sounders travel down to Houston on Wednesday and then back up to play Portland again the following Sunday. It’s safe to say that Sunday’s results will still be fresh in the minds of players and fans alike in these two soccer giants’ second match in just one week.

MATCHDAY STORYLINES Radio Play-by-Play Commentator Matt Johnson tells you his three storylines to follow in this evening’s match vs. Portland Timbers. backs playing solid and Ozzie, along with Roldan, shutting down the opposing offense, this has allowed Lodeiro to spring Seattle moving forward to find Dempsey, Ivanschitz or Morris. Seems too simple but when the squad defends as a team it will attack as a team. It’s been very entertaining to watch.
Get to Know Each Other
Seattle is a different team Let’s start with the obvious; Seattle is a different team since the last time these squads met on July 17. That is not meant to take anything away from the Timbers and especially Diego Valeri’s performance that Sunday afternoon, but with Nicolás Lodeiro pulling the strings and Seattle’s switch to a 4-2-3-1 formation has made things look almost lopsided for the Rave Green in the last three. On top of that, the discipline that both Tyrone Mears and Joevin Jones have showed in alternating their dangerous runs have made for both dangerous movements and a tight defense. Earlier in the season, Seattle’s defense was caught out as both outside backs committed up the field leaving Evans and Marshall wide open for a counter attack. With the outside

so he and the organization feel good about the situation. Valeri looks to top his high mark in goals for a season as he sits on 10, while scoring 11 in 2014. Seattle must limit his touches and space if they want to continue this undefeated run. One thing to keep in mind is that Portland have yet to win on the road as they sit 0-6-6 away from Providence Park. But Diego Chara will be rested as he did not travel to D.C. while serving a onegame suspension this past week.
Diego Valeri The 30-year-old Argentine midfielder is playing as well as anytime in his career. Sounders fans witnessed firsthand in July what the playmaker can do with a little time on the ball. He ended the match with two goals on five shots and sprung numerous moments for the Timbers. He’s added one goal since then but he will obviously have the attention of Alonso and Roldan throughout the 90 minutes on Sunday. Valeri was just rewarded with a multi-year extension that runs through 2019,
As the Timbers just experienced with Sporting KC, playing them in back to back league matches, Seattle and Portland will play in back to back Sundays. In between, Seattle will fly to take on Houston next Wednesday, while Portland will stay home and wait for Seattle’s visit. Playing so close together might take this rivalry to a next level (if that’s possible). If there is a flash point on Sunday look for the return visit a week later to be a can’t miss affair. A couple things to mention is that 50,000-plus are expected for Sunday’s match which will only amplify things to the correct level. The Sounders record in matches played at CenturyLink Field with over 50,000 fans is 12-2-2. I really hope to see you at the park… Enjoy it!

2016 Cascadia Cup Update Although Seattle is without a point in the 2016 Cascadia Cup standings, the Rave Green are by no means out of the race of the regional trophy between the Sounders, Timbers and Whitecaps in 2016. Seattle currently holds the cup after reclaiming it last season for the first time since 2011, while Portland won it in 2012 and Vancouver in 2013 and 2014. Winless in two Cascadia matches this season, Seattle sits six points behind Portland and Vancouver with a game in hand on both. A pair of results over the next week against the Timbers would propel Sounders FC back into the picture with two matches remaining – both against Whitecaps FC. A loss to Portland this Sunday, however, would all but eliminate the Rave Green from contention, while a draw would keep Seattle in a deep hole to climb out of for its supporters to hold onto the Cascadia Cup.

Rivalry Runs Deep The fiercest rivalry in American soccer returns to Seattle on Sunday evening when the Sounders and Timbers meet for the first of two matchups just a week apart. Dating back to 1975, Seattle and Portland have met 93 times (Seattle leads the all-time series 47-34-12), but records and standings are historically thrown out the window when these two teams take the field. Last month, Portland – the defending MLS champion – topped Seattle by a score of 3-1, but the Sounders have displayed an impressive run of form. Unbeaten in its past three matches, the Rave Green understand the stakes of Sunday’s contest.
18 · MATCHDAY
After over three decades of competition, the rivalry was reignited when the teams jumped to top-flight status, with Sounders FC joining MLS in 2009 before Portland two years later. The Rave Green have a 7-4-4 advantage against the Timbers in MLS regular season play since 2011 – including an unbeaten 5-0-2 record at CenturyLink Field – but the Timbers have gotten their fair share of wins. Portland eliminated Seattle from the 2013 MLS Cup Playoffs, as well as the 2015 Lamar Hunt U. S. Open Cup in the now infamous three-red card performance by the Sounders at Starfire Stadium.
Just 173 miles separate the two cities, a trip over 1,000 Timbers supporters are expected to make on Sunday. They’ll be a small piece of the pie, however, as over 50,000 are expected through the gates for the third of five full-stadium matches at CenturyLink Field this season. Good news for the Sounders faithful – when the stadium’s upper bowl is rocking, the home team makes it a fortress. Seattle is 12-2-2 with a home attendance over 50,000. With 11 games remaining and plenty of ground to make up, the Sounders have an opportunity to narrow the gap for the postseason, get back in the race for the Cascadia Cup and gain temporary bragging rights in the Pacific Northwest. If there’s ever an ideal to make a statement – after all, Sounders FC has made the postseason in each of its seven seasons – it’s versus the nemesis.

Sounders’ Defense Holding its Own
By Will Parchman Chad Marshall’s selection to the MLS Team of the Week on Tuesday might’ve been the quietest accolade he’s ever received. It isn’t because of his performance itself, or a weaker matchup, or any factor that directly involved Marshall at all. It was simply because, as Seattle has come to know over the past three weeks, Nicolás Lodeiro is one of the loudest talents MLS has
seen in recent years. Even sonatas can be washed out by the beautiful noise he generates. Lodeiro made the MLS Team of the Week bench, but one got the feeling it was merely to let someone else have a chance. After all, Lodeiro scored and registered an assist in a 2-1 win over Real Salt Lake on Sunday and had made the TOTW two weeks running. Nobody’s spotlight in the league is brighter right now.
MATCHDAY · 21
So it was perhaps all too easy to overlook Marshall and, for that matter, all of his defensive comrades. With a few very brief exceptions, they’ve been the unsung heroes of the team’s abrupt reversal from Western Conference bottom-feeders to arguably the hottest team in MLS. The Sounders have been built, like most teams who challenge for MLS Cups and win silverware, from the back to the front. Under coach Sigi Schmid, the club always went out of its way to collect ‘keepers and center backs and fullbacks in the same breath as they track gamechanging attackers like Fredy Montero, Obafemi Martins and Clint Dempsey. As much as players like Dempsey draw fans with acrobatic
22 · MATCHDAY
goals, players like Marshall and goalkeeper Stefan Frei form the basis for postseason runs. The defense was never bad this year in so many words, but it was wildly inconsistent. At its worst, in June and July, the Sounders gave up 17 goals in 11 games in a stretch where they were 2-8-1. But the defense was visibly sagging under the weight of an attack that could hang onto the ball but could not produce many meaningful opportunities. In those 11 games, the Sounders were shut out a staggering six times. This naturally put more pressure on the back line, which has fairly consistently been Joevin Jones, Marshall, Brad Evans and Tyrone
Mears. All four have had their hiccups, but each could lay claim to having a positive individual season in one respect or another. And then the Sporting Kansas City match happened, and everything changed. Seattle’s disastrous 3-0 result in Kansas City on July 24 was the last gasp for Schmid, who left the club in interim Brian Schmetzer’s hands afterward. For most of the season, Schmid was fond of the three-man midfield of Cristian Roldan, Osvaldo Alonso and Erik Friberg, who rotated in and out of position in a somewhat confusing positional morass. This is what the Starting XI looked like in terms of average positioning in the 1-0 loss against the LA Galaxy on July 9 with all three central midfielders playing. This is neither compact nor spaced particularly well where Friberg (8), Alonso (6) and Roldan (7) are concerned. Roldan drifted too high and too wide for what he does well, while Friberg and Alonso were practically stepping on top of one another in the middle. Meanwhile, there was a lot of space in behind for exploitation, which is precisely how the Galaxy got their only goal. It happened to be the match-winner. Now look at the formation in the comfortable 3-1 win over Orlando City on Aug. 7. It has flipped to a fairly standard 4-2-3-1 with Roldan and Alonso sitting in front of the back line in lieu of the previous confused three-headed hydra.
Alonso is clearly the holder now, but he has linkage both at his back and to his front. Roldan is staying home more often, and Lodeiro (10) pinches in from the right to provide a conduit between Dempsey (2) and Jordan Morris (13). Between that and Evans (3) who pulls in behind Alonso to provide a backward avenue, the Sounders can move the ball up the gut as well as any team in the league right now. This has all taken a tremendous amount of pressure off Seattle’s back line, which has not seen a single round number next to Seattle’s name on the scoreboard since Lodeiro arrived. Indeed, even the three goals they’ve given up in the last three games were all anomalous mental miscues that weren’t systemic issues. A miscommunication against LA, a slip-up on a corner kick against Orlando, a once-in-a-lifetime gaffe against RSL. They were simple mistakes, each of them, capable of being ironed out on a good practice day. The point is that the Sounders are and perhaps always have been much better than their record this season. The talent was there, but for a multitude of reasons the ends didn’t meet. Lodeiro may have allowed that to happen, but don’t take your eyes off the defense when Seattle hosts Portland this weekend. Because they’ve certainly upheld their end of the bargain in dragging the Sounders back to the fringe of the playoff discussion.
That, my friends, is a spine.
