Sounders FC continues its two-match homestand with a full-stadium contest versus the Portland Timbers on Sunday evening. The Rave Green head into the fixture on a three-match unbeaten streak, including two consecutive wins, after defeating Real Salt Lake by a score of 2-1 last Sunday. Midfielder Nico Lodeiro recorded one goal and one assist, as the Designated Player became the first player in club history to register at least three assists and one goal in his first three MLS matches with Seattle.

five points behind the Timbers, but holds two games in hand. Portland is winless in 12 road matches in 2016 (0-6-6 record).

Interim Head Coach Brian Schmetzer is unbeaten in his three matches since taking over managerial duties on July 26, but has yet to face a Cascadia opponent. Portland, the defending MLS Cup champion, enters Sunday’s contest in sixth place in the Western Conference with 32 points. Seattle sits

DID YOU KNOW??? Seattle has never lost at home to Portland in MLS play. The Rave Green have hosted Portland on seven occasions since 2011, posting a 5-0-2 record and outscoring the visitors 11-3. Last season, Seattle won 1-0 in April before topping Portland 2-1 in August. On August 25, 2013, Sounders FC defeated Portland 1-0 in front of 67,385 fans at CenturyLink Field, the highest-attended soccer match in club history and the secondlargest crowd in MLS history for a standalone match.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 24TH COVERAGE STARTS AT 5:30P MATCHDAY · 5

All you need to know when Sounders FC takes on Portland in full-stadium clash The Seattle Sounders square off against their chief rival Portland Timbers for the only meeting at CenturyLink Field this season. Here’s a breakdown of everything you need to know about the game. by Cam Rizzardini

WHEN AND WHERE: Kickoff is Sunday, August 21 at 6:30 p.m. PT at CenturyLink Field.

WHERE TO WATCH: The game

will be telecast nationally on FS1. The game will be aired on KIRO Radio 97.3 FM with a pregame show beginning at 6:00 p.m. PT and El Rey 1360AM in Spanish.

RECORDS AND STANDINGS: Sounders (8-12-3,

27 pts., 9th in Western Conference), Timbers (8-9-8, 32 pts., 6th in Western Conference).

ALL-TIME HISTORY: In this deep and illustrious rivalry, Seattle owns a 47-34-12 all-time record dating back to the first time the sides met in 1975. The Sounders are 7-4-4 against their neighbors to the south in MLS play. LAST TIME AROUND: A new Designated Player, a new head coach, a new formation and a new lease on life. Forget what you thought you knew about Seattle vs. Portland in 2016. This is a different Sounders team than the one that fell 3-1 in the Rose City just one month ago. RAVE GREEN ROLLING: Since the arrival of DP midfielder Nicolás Lodeiro, the Sounders have been reborn. After a 6-12-2 start to the

season, the Sounders are on a 2-0-1 run and are finally looking like a playoff contender. The Rave Green have also doubled their scoring, averaging just one goal per game in the first 20 games to two goals in the last three games. The Timbers, meanwhile, are 1-2-0 in their last three and holding onto the last playoff spot in the Western Conference.

LODEIRO VS VALERI: For the first time in 2016, the Sounders have an answer for Diego Valeri. Lodeiro has been exceptional since the day he walked into training in late July and has been to the Sounders what Valeri is to the Timbers. Valeri is having a sensational year for the Timbers, with 10 goals and five assists. If the first three games of Lodeiro’s MLS career is any indication, he is poised to have a better debut than even Valeri, and arguably one of the best debut seasons in MLS history. In Valeri’s first three starts he tallied one goal, no assists and the Timbers went 0-1-2. In Lodeiro’s first three starts, he has one goal and three assists, and the Sounders are 2-0-1 with him on the field. INJURY UPDATE: Román Torres is looking closer to his return after battling back from an ACL tear last September. Interim head coach Brian Schmetzer has been tight-lipped about the return of the Panamanian

international and his appearance this Sunday is still unclear. On the Portland side, defender Nat Borchers is out for the year with a ruptured Achilles tendon. There is also a slew of Timbers in the questionable category featuring Zarek Valentin, Ben Zemanski, Darren Mattocks and Liam Ridgewell.

TIMBERS TO NOTE: Forward

Fanendo Adi is having another Golden Boot contending season, with 11 goals in 24 appearances, just four goals behind leader Sebastian Giovinco of Toronto FC. Goalkeeper Jake Gleeson

has officially won the starting spot over Adam Kwarasey who was sold to Norwegian club Rosenborg BK in midJuly. Gleeson is currently third in total saves in MLS.

BACK-TO-BACK: Well, almost.

After facing off on Sunday, the Sounders travel down to Houston on Wednesday and then back up to play Portland again the following Sunday. It’s safe to say that Sunday’s results will still be fresh in the minds of players and fans alike in these two soccer giants’ second match in just one week.

MATCHDAY STORYLINES Radio Play-by-Play Commentator Matt Johnson tells you his three storylines to follow in this evening’s match vs. Portland Timbers. backs playing solid and Ozzie, along with Roldan, shutting down the opposing offense, this has allowed Lodeiro to spring Seattle moving forward to find Dempsey, Ivanschitz or Morris. Seems too simple but when the squad defends as a team it will attack as a team. It’s been very entertaining to watch.

Get to Know Each Other

Seattle is a different team Let’s start with the obvious; Seattle is a different team since the last time these squads met on July 17. That is not meant to take anything away from the Timbers and especially Diego Valeri’s performance that Sunday afternoon, but with Nicolás Lodeiro pulling the strings and Seattle’s switch to a 4-2-3-1 formation has made things look almost lopsided for the Rave Green in the last three. On top of that, the discipline that both Tyrone Mears and Joevin Jones have showed in alternating their dangerous runs have made for both dangerous movements and a tight defense. Earlier in the season, Seattle’s defense was caught out as both outside backs committed up the field leaving Evans and Marshall wide open for a counter attack. With the outside

so he and the organization feel good about the situation. Valeri looks to top his high mark in goals for a season as he sits on 10, while scoring 11 in 2014. Seattle must limit his touches and space if they want to continue this undefeated run. One thing to keep in mind is that Portland have yet to win on the road as they sit 0-6-6 away from Providence Park. But Diego Chara will be rested as he did not travel to D.C. while serving a onegame suspension this past week.

Diego Valeri The 30-year-old Argentine midfielder is playing as well as anytime in his career. Sounders fans witnessed firsthand in July what the playmaker can do with a little time on the ball. He ended the match with two goals on five shots and sprung numerous moments for the Timbers. He’s added one goal since then but he will obviously have the attention of Alonso and Roldan throughout the 90 minutes on Sunday. Valeri was just rewarded with a multi-year extension that runs through 2019,

As the Timbers just experienced with Sporting KC, playing them in back to back league matches, Seattle and Portland will play in back to back Sundays. In between, Seattle will fly to take on Houston next Wednesday, while Portland will stay home and wait for Seattle’s visit. Playing so close together might take this rivalry to a next level (if that’s possible). If there is a flash point on Sunday look for the return visit a week later to be a can’t miss affair. A couple things to mention is that 50,000-plus are expected for Sunday’s match which will only amplify things to the correct level. The Sounders record in matches played at Century Link Field with over 50 thousand fans is 12-2-2. I really hope to see you at the park…Enjoy it!
