Sounders FC hosts the Colorado Rapids at CenturyLink Field on Tuesday evening in the first leg of the Western Conference Championship. After defeating Sporting KC 1-0 in the Knockout Round and topping first-place FC Dallas in the Conference Semifinals, Seattle meets Colorado, who advanced on a penalty-kick shootout against the LA Galaxy after a first-round bye. Entering the Western Conference Championship for the third time in club history, midfielder Nicolás Lodeiro has scored three goals this postseason for the Rave Green, while forward Nelson Valdez has netted two. Defender Joevin Jones has three assists in three postseason matches, which sets a club record. Homegrown Player Jordan Morris, who won MLS Rookie of the Year earlier this month, looks to return from injury after sustaining a hamstring strain on November 6.

DID YOU KNOW? Head Coach Brian Schmetzer has yet to lose at home? Hopefully this doesn’t jinx it, but Schmetzer has compiled an unblemished 7-0-2 mark at CenturyLink Field since taking over the managerial role on July 26. After a 1-1 draw against the LA Galaxy on July 31, Seattle has won seven of eight matches in the Emerald City, with the other draw coming in a scoreless bout against the Houston Dynamo in October. Goalkeeper Stefan Frei has recorded a shutout in five of the past six home matches.

Sounders Continue Quest for Elusive Title

The last time the Rapids and Sounders faced off, there was little evidence to suggest these two would meet in the Western Conference Championship. On May 21, Colorado came to CenturyLink Field and left with three points on a 1-0 victory, as the Rapids jumped off to a staggering start to the campaign after finishing on the bottom of the table in 2015. Meanwhile, the Sounders were still looking for a spark to turn the season around. Yet here they are, one round away from playing in the MLS Cup Final – Colorado has a chance to complete its dramatic worst-to-first storyline, while Seattle can punctuate its miraculous turnaround with the first postseason trophy in club history. When these teams clash once again in the Western Conference Championship, there are plenty of changes that are evident, particularly for Seattle. Most notably is the promotion of Brian Schmetzer, who took over as Head Coach in an interim role in July before earning the full-time position earlier this month. Uruguayan Nicolás Lodeiro has scored seven goals and added

eight assists across all competitions since joining Seattle in July, when he came alongside countryman Alvaro Fernandez. Also of note, midfielder Cristian Roldan, who has flourished as a holding midfielder in Schmetzer’s 4-23-1 formation, didn’t play in that May contest, while defenders Chad Marshall and Román Torres were sidelined with injuries. Beyond these expected changes, history gives Seattle hope heading into the series. Despite losing to Colorado in each of their two meetings in 2016, Seattle still has more wins against the Rapids than any other team in MLS in league play (13). The clubs have met once before in the postseason, when goals from Brad Evans and Eddie Johnson gave Seattle a 2-0 win in the 2013 Western Conference Knockout Round at CenturyLink Field. 2016 is the first season in the club’s eight-year history that Seattle has failed to beat the Rapids in MLS play. That streak now has another chance to be extended on Tuesday.

MATCHDAY STORYLINES Radio Play-by-Play Commentator Matt Johnson tells you his three storylines to follow in this evening’s match vs. the Colorado Rapids. A Look Back For the third time in club history, Seattle Sounders FC finds itself in the Western Conference Championship. Say that again to yourself, Western Conference Championship. What the team has done to get to this point is quite remarkable, if not historic. It is well documented that Head Coach Brian Schmetzer is 10-3-4 since taking over in late July. Keep in mind that one of those losses was to FC Dallas in the second leg of the Conference Semifinals, and the squad moved on to face Colorado regardless. What really stands out to me is that twice late in the season the team won three matches in eight days. The first run was during the undefeated month of September, beating LA, Chicago and Vancouver at BC Place to put pressure on the other squads in the West. The next three-game streak came at the end of the season to clinch, advance and pound. The playoff-clinching win vs. RSL in front of 50,000 fans at CenturyLink helped qualify the Rave Green for

a home test vs. Sporting KC. The KC win on Thursday was followed by the trouncing of FC Dallas in the first leg on Sunday. Yes, the travel was minimal for both of these three-game stretches, but with Schmetzer pulling all the right strings it now sets things up with the Sounders as the team that nobody wants to play.

spectacular. They are led by 6’7” Axel Sjoberg of Sweden. Sjoberg finished third in Defender of the Year honors and played 31 of a possible 34 matches while adding two goals and an assist. The rest of the back four consists of Eric Miller, Jared Watts and another ex-Sounder in Marc Burch. While their scoring prowess needs a little help, they are as stingy as it gets in the back…just ask the Galaxy (one goal in 210 minutes played vs. Colorado in the playoffs).

Getting Healthy

Azira

Colorado Strengths It’s easy – defense. Colorado led the league this year in goals allowed, giving up only allowing 32 this season. The next closets clubs gave up 39, in Vancouver and Houston. The 4-2-3-1 formation has holding standouts Sam Cronin and ex-Sounder Micheal Azira sitting in front of their back four while being anchored on the line by Tim Howard. Howard, of course, is out for months after being injured in the USA match vs. Mexico. However, while Zac MacMath (17 total starts) was between the pipes prior to Howard’s arrival, he led MLS in goals against average with 0.76 per game. He also added six shutouts, including one here in Seattle (1-0 Rapids win in May). Their back for is solid, if not

For most of the club, the International break came at a great time. For the six Sounders that left the club to play for their countries a collective, “hold your breath” was going on until everybody came back healthy and sound. The two question marks are Jordan Morris and Alvaro Fernandez, both recovering from hamstring strains. For the rest of the squad, it looks like a full-go with Andreas Ivanschitz making great progress and almost all the way back after suffering a strained knee ligament on October 16 vs. Houston. Brad Evans, Román Torres and Oalex Anderson have resumed to full training, with Torres playing a full 90 for Panama this past week in their 0-0 draw vs. Mexico in Panama City. Even if Morris and Fernandez need to wait until the second leg vs. Colorado (Nov. 27) the squad is as healthy as any of the four teams left in the playoffs.

Morris Rightly Named 2016 MLS Rookie of the Year

By Will Parchman Jordan Morris is the 2016 AT&T MLS Rookie of the Year. In the end, it wasn’t much of a contest. Morris’ season has few equals in terms of rookie forwards in the league’s history. Among all rookies since 1996, only Canadian Cyle Larin scored more than Morris’ 12 goals in 2016, and no American has done better. What’s more, half of those were match-winners — an MLS rookie record — and Morris did it all on a team in flux and contributed to

the most stirring midseason turnaround in league history. The sternest competition to Morris’ claim came from the opposite end of the country. Alongside Morris in the final voting were NYCFC winger Jack Harrison and Philadelphia Union right back Keegan Rosenberry. As good as Harrison’s season was, the vote in the end was between Rosenberry and Morris. The arguments for Rosenberry came down to his consistently quality

performances. He set an unbeatable rookie record by playing every minute of every game this year, contributing his talents along the flank to a Union defense that helped put them into the playoffs. His position, too, deserves its place in the reckoning. Fullbacks in particular this good are hard to find, and Rosenberry might’ve stamped his place in the top five in all of MLS at the position.

market team with arguably less scrutiny and less national attention. Fullbacks naturally get less publicity than forwards, after all.

So why, then, choose Morris over Rosenberry?

But this belies the history of the award. It’s been handed out to 20 rookies in MLS history, only five of whom were forwards. Defenders, on the other hand, won it eight times, a sure sign that it’s easier in MLS for a defender to slide into the starting lineup in his first year and make an impact than at any other position. There’s a reason for that.

For one, let’s dispel the notion that a vote for Morris was a vote for the award-as-popularity contest. Some corners of the internet have claimed Morris’ outsize profile, national team prospects and glamour position indicate the vote would’ve gone to him regardless of the side-byside comparison between the two. Rosenberry, after all, plays on a smaller

And then there’s the not-so-small matter of scoring goals versus stopping them. While it’s true that defenders are often overlooked in the same way offensive linemen are in football, scoring a goal is more difficult than stopping a goal from being scored. Morris’ award would be one thing if he’d had a middling season while Rosenberry played week-in, week-out.

16 · MATCHDAY

Morris did not have a middling season. He tied for the highest goal-scoring output by a U.S.born player this year, rookie or not. So that, as they say, is that. A deeper dive into Morris’ season reveals a hearty dose of maturation as well. If a hallmark of all Rookie of the Year winners involves a steady progression from the first game to their most recent, then Morris certainly fits the bill. Morris started the year as a fill-in on the right flank in a 4-3-3, moved up top as a center forward in the same formation, occupied the lone striker position in a 4-2-3-1 and finally moved to the left flank in the same formation to make room for an in-form Nelson Valdez. Morris clearly has a favored position. The vast majority of his goals have come as a striker. But the fact that he’s been good in limited time out wide, and that he’s steadily gotten better in those roles, indicates a wider progression that puts him in good stead for the future.

on breaks. Somewhere in the middle of the year, the light flicked on and Morris started running heads-up on retreating defenders with his blitzkrieg speed. His newfound fearlessness led to five goals in a span of seven games in August and September in the midst of Seattle’s most critical winning stretch of the year. Morris still has some growing to do, but there’s little question he was the best rookie in MLS in 2016. Perhaps some award races will come down to the wire this season. But this one didn’t.

There’s also the matter of his brimming confidence. In Morris’ first few months in the league, he was reticent to take on defenders in space and often checked back and deferred to his teammates

Brian Schmetzer: The Improbable Turnaround

“Being an interim coach is not easy in any sport, in any situation,” Sounders FC General Manager & President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey told media on July 26. He was speaking of Brian Schmetzer, the club’s Top Assistant Coach since 2009, who had just been given the reins to manage his hometown team. Although Schmetzer had longed for this opportunity, he admittedly stepped into a difficult situation. The club sat near the bottom of the standings with a 6-12-2 record. Although the comeback wasn’t easy, Schmetzer certainly made it seem that way. The Rave Green blazed their way into the postseason by the end of October. Coupled with the addition of Designated Player Nicolás Lodeiro and the return of Román Torres, Schmetzer led Seattle to an 8-2-4 mark down the stretch. Seattle became the first team in MLS history to make the playoffs after recording 20 points or fewer through 20 matches. And in the words of Osvaldo Alonso, “We’re not finished yet.”

18 · MATCHDAY

After eking out a 1-0 win over Sporting KC in the Western Conference Knockout Round, Seattle topped Supporters’ Shield-winner FC Dallas in the Conference Semifinals. In the first leg, Sounders FC surged to a 3-0 win after scoring three goals in an eight-minute span in the second half. FC Dallas won the second leg 2-1 in Texas, but the aggregate advantage pushed Seattle into the Western Conference Championship for the third time in club history. Now Schmetzer’s men face the Colorado Rapids with an opportunity to play for their first MLS Cup. Seattle has already made club history by winning two playoff series in a single postseason for the first time, but its pursuit for the year-end trophy remains relentless. Between legs in the semifinals, Sounders FC dropped the interim tag from Schmetzer’s role. After guiding the Rave Green to one of the most improbable comebacks in league history, it was clear there wasn’t a better suitor for the job. But Schmetzer would be the first to tell you, it’s not about his title…it’s about the team winning one.

Stingy Rapids Face New Challenge in Revamped Seattle By Will Parchman The MLS season is a long runway of takeoffs and landings in form. Things change so much from one game to the next - let alone one month to the next - that taking past results at this time of year and extrapolating from them any sort of intellectual nuance can be difficult. So does it matter that the Colorado Rapids have had the Sounders’ number this year? Yes and no. But mostly no. When the Rapids and Sounders clash n Tuesday at CenturyLink Field in the

ALONSO

first leg of their Western Conference Championship series, they’re dragging incomplete history. The Rapids beat the Sounders in their only two meetings this year, the first a 3-1 drubbing in Commerce City, Colo. on April 23, and again in a 1-0 Sounders loss in Seattle on May 21. There were a few notable things to extract from those two battles, notably the latter of the two. For one, the Rapids played the second of them without talisman Shkelzen Gashi, something they’re likely to have to do again on Tuesday. Gashi finished the Rapids’ Western Conference Semifinal series against the LA Galaxy on crutches, and Rapids coach Pablo Mastroeni said earlier this week his status for Tuesday is doubtful with a bum ankle. As a result, the Rapids are likely to play much as they did in that matchup. They sat deeper with Micheal Azira and Sam Cronin stymying attacks through the middle and the team as a unit largely lumping over-the-top balls to Kevin Doyle and a pushed-up Jermaine Jones. It worked. That Rapids team also earned a road shutout with Zac MacMath between the pipes, something they’ll have to rely on again. Midseason capture Tim Howard was ruled out for the season with an injury he suffered on national team duty last week, pushing MacMath back into a regular starting role for the first time in nearly four months.

MATCHDAY · 21

The Rapids will be largely unchanged since that time. They still rely on a swarming, protective defensive effort that asks all 10 outfield players to switch into a defensive mindset at a moment’s notice. Watch the Rapids defend with numbers on Tuesday and you’ll see how much Mastroeni drills defensive fortitude. Even forwards are defenders. The Rapids’ defense is verging on historic numbers, and most of it is simply in angles and smart play. The Rapids aren’t particularly notable statistically in key metrics like tackles per game (16th) or interceptions per game (8th), but they cut off avenues to goal like few other teams. Teams are averaging just 12.3 shots per game on Colorado this year, the fifthlowest total in the league. To do that while averaging less than 50 percent

SJOBERG

possession illustrates the total defense Mastroeni preaches. Indeed, Colorado’s won eight games by 1-0 margins and scored just six more regular season goals than they did in 2015. Combined with a defense that surrendered 11 fewer than it did a year ago, the Rapids went from last in the Western Conference to second in 12 months. So goes MLS. The Rapids have largely got it done behind one of the most unlikely emergent stars in the league. When he entered the league, Axel Sjoberg was notable primarily for one reason: his size. Anyone who watched the 6-foot-7 Sjobgerg (prounced SHOEberg) lope up to the dais on draft day in 2015 remembers how he towered over the podium while thanking his family and coaches. After a standout career at Marquette, questions abounded as to whether Sjoberg’s size would leave him athletically vulnerable in such a fast attacking league. Instead, Sjoberg’s become the one constant on maybe the most effective back line in the league. Whether starting next to Bobby Burling or, most recently, Jared Watts, Sjoberg’s ability to play along the ground as well as control aerial battles has cast him as not just one of the league’s top emergent center

22 · MATCHDAY

MASTROENI

As a result, the Sounders didn’t score and left themselves open to a Sjoberg goal to decide the match. The likelihood of that happening again is slim.

backs, but as one of its top center backs period. Getting over him or around him is no simple task. But the change in the Sounders since the last time these two teams played is notable. So notable, in fact, that one wonders if the Rapids really understand what they’re in for. When these teams last met in May, then-coach Sigi Schmid was still deep in his 4-3-3 experiment, and Aaron Kovar started wide right. Clint Dempsey, still healthy then, played in the hole underneath Jordan Morris, while Brad Evans and Zach Scott paired in defense.

In those days, it’s easy to forget Alonso was saddled with more attacking duties than at any point in his career. Lacking a true creative impetus, Alonso was often asked to get forward and buttress the flow in the attacking half. It did help prod the Sounders forward, but it also created gaps where Alonso would’ve been. That era ended the minute Lodeiro stepped onto the field. It’s tough to use past battles as a litmus, and it’ll be even tougher for the Rapids to reconcile the team they see on Tuesday with the one they faced in May. Whether that ultimately spurs the Sounders onto their first win over the Rapids this year, we’ll have to wait and see.

LODEIRO

Notably, no Nicolás Lodeiro. Lodeiro of course galvanized this team with his setup play, but so too has Brian Schmetzer with his pragmatic switch to a much more coherent 4-2-3-1. That day in May, three of the Sounders’ top five passers were defenders, including Evans, who nearly matched Osvaldo Alonso with a whopping 99 passes. That’s not necessarily what you want to see, especially when your creator in Dempsey isn’t so natural in that role.
