Sounders FC returns to the Xbox Pitch at CenturyLink Field to take on Vancouver Whitecaps FC in a full-stadium contest on Saturday afternoon. Seattle comes off a 1-1 road draw at the San Jose Earthquakes on September 10, which featured a late equalizer by midfielder Nico Lodeiro. Unbeaten in six of its past seven matches, the Rave Green currently sit in ninth place in the Western Conference and six points below the Portland Timbers for the final postseason position (9-13-5, 32 points).
under the direction of third-year Head Coach Carl Robinson. Saturday’s contest marks the second of three meetings between the two sides this season. On March 19, Vancouver eked out a 2-1 win at CenturyLink Field on a pair of penalty-kick goals by Pedro Morales. The regional rivals will meet once more on October 2 at BC Place.
Vancouver visits the Emerald City after earning a 3-1 road win last Saturday versus Columbus Crew SC. With the victory, the Whitecaps leapfrogged Seattle and San Jose for the seventh-place spot on the table with 34 points. With 37 goals scored and 45 goals allowed, Vancouver’s minus-8 goal differential is the worst in the Western Conference. The club performs
DID YOU KNOW??? Since taking over the managerial role on July 26, Interim Head Coach Brian Schmetzer is unbeaten at CenturyLink Field. In his debut on July 31, Sounders FC played to a 1-1 draw against the LA Galaxy, but the Rave Green have won both home matches since. On August 14, Seattle topped Real Salt Lake by a score of 2-1 before defeating the Portland Timbers 3-1 in front of over 53,000 fans. After the Vancouver match, Seattle will host three more home matches in the 2016 campaign.

All you need to know when Sounders FC Hosts Vancouver Whitecaps FC The Seattle Sounders host Cascadia rival Vancouver Whitecaps FC this weekend in a Western Conference battle. Here is everything you need to know heading into the match. By Ryan Krasnoo
WHEN AND WHERE: Kickoff is at 1 p.m. PT at CenturyLink Field in Seattle. HOW TO WATCH AND LISTEN: You can find the match on JOEtv, UnivisionSeattle, ROOT SPORTS (outside Seattle), KIRO Radio 97.3 FM, El Rey 1360AM. RECORDS AND STANDINGS: Sounders (9-13-5, 32 points, ninth in Western Conference), Whitecaps (9-13-7, 34 points, seventh in Western Conference). ALL-TIME MLS HISTORY: The Sounders are 5-6-4 against the Whitecaps in MLS all time. This is the second of three meetings between the teams this season. LAST MEETING: The Sounders lost 2-1 on March 19 in Seattle. Vancouver’s Pedro Morales scored twice on two penalty kicks in the 10th and 74th minutes, while Seattle’s Andreas Ivanschitz found the back of the net in the 52nd.
6 · MATCHDAY
TRENDING UP: The Sounders are 3-1-3 in their last seven matches, with a loss in Portland two weeks ago the only blemish in that span as the team makes a race for the final Western Conference playoff spot. TRENDING DOWN: The Whitecaps won 3-1 at Columbus on Saturday, but it was just their first win in their last nine matches (1-5-3). MANNEH DOWN: Vancouver lost Kekuta Manneh in midJuly when he underwent right foot surgery. He is still tied for second with Christian Bolanos on the Whitecaps’ goalscoring list this season, while Morales leads the team with six. O, CAPTAIN!: Sounders captain Brad Evans is expected to return this week after missing last Saturday’s match against the San Jose Earthquakes with lower back pain. His absence forced interim head coach Brian Schmetzer to alter his lineup slightly, most notably with the
normally central Cristian Roldan playing on the right flank. TORRES’ RETURN: Sounders center back Román Torres returned to the starting lineup last week against the Earthquakes for the first time in nearly a year after tearing his ACL, coincidentally, in San Jose. “Torres was pretty good,” Schmetzer said on Monday. “There’s a little bit of rust to
shake off, but it’s been a full calendar year…I think for his first few matches, I give him high marks.” FOUL PLAY: The Whitecaps are second in MLS in fouls committed this year with 410, behind only D.C. United (431). The Sounders, conversely, are second-to-last, having committed just 279.

MATCHDAY STORYLINES Radio Play-by-Play Commentator Matt Johnson tells you his three storylines to follow in this afternoon’s match vs. Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Home Games Are Must-Wins Generally speaking, I’m not a fan of using the term “must win” unless the team I’m rooting for is in a playoff series or in an elimination game, but honestly we can look at the Sounders remaining seven matches and say MUST-WIN for all of the home matches. Vancouver, Chicago, Houston and Real Salt Lake are all headed to CenturyLink Field. You’d love to take those 12 points right now and let the chips fall where they may on the road. If you think of the two games in hand as the Wednesday matches vs. Chicago and Houston, you’d like to think that the chance to get three wins or better is clearly possible. The remaining road games will be as tough as they come, as the Rave Green head to LA, Vancouver and Dallas, where the opponents combined home records are 23-5-16 (Dallas has only lost once and LA is unbeaten at the StubHub Center). However, all of the last six opponents have something to

the 94th minute, only to lose 2-1. Despite being on the good end of an own goal to tie the match at 1-1 in Columbus on Saturday, the ‘Caps went on to score two fine goals and capture the three points and head into CenturyLink Field with a bit of confidence. The win did come against now 10th-place Crew SC, but a win on the road can ignite a team that has struggled big time. play for. Four of them have playoff positioning in the back of their minds, while the players on both Houston and Chicago are flat-out playing for roster spots next year.
Vancouver Desperate for Points As the Sounders have improved to 3-1-3 with Interim Head Coach Brian Schmetzer and midfielder Nicolás Lodeiro, they have been helped the last few weeks by results in the Western Conference. Vancouver, for one, is a team that has struggled mightily in the past month. Headed into the match last week at Columbus, they were mired in an eight-game winless streak three straight shutouts before scoring a mere consolation goal vs. San Jose in
Scoreboard Watching Seven points separates fifth-place Sporting Kansas City and your Sounders FC, that now sits in ninth in the Western Conference table. I add KC to the mix because they, too, have not helped themselves in the last few weeks. Heading into the weekend, KC sits on 39 points, Portland at 38, Vancouver at 34 and San Jose at 33. Portland is unbeaten at home and their next opponent, Philly, is 3-7-4 on the road. If we were to be honest, you’d have to think that Portland would get another three points this week and that puts the red line at 39 with Kansas City. KC is traveling to LA and San Jose visits Colorado. This really brings me back to the fact that home games are must wins. If things fall into place, the Rave Green will be four points behind KC at the end of the weekend. Nail biting time!

Zach Scott Announces Intention to Retire at Conclusion of 2016 MLS Season “The time has come for me to turn the page on my soccer career and start a new chapter of my life,” said Scott. “When I signed with the USL Sounders in 2002, I never imagined that I would have a professional career that lasted 15 years, and it’s been a rare blessing to have played in the same city the entire time. That said, I have much more to offer in this life and I couldn’t be more excited to see what’s next.”
Sounders FC defender Zach Scott announced on Thursday that he intends to retire at the conclusion of the 2016 Major League Soccer season. With today’s announcement, Scott prepares to close the book on a distinguished 15-year professional career in Seattle at the USL and MLS levels, making 347 all-time appearances in a Sounders uniform, including the last eight seasons in MLS. The Haiku, Hawaii native won seven trophies throughout his time in Seattle, including two USL league titles, four Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups and the 2014 Supporters’ Shield.

The 36-year-old is one of three remaining original players from Sounders FC’s expansion season in 2009, and he ranks fifth in club history with 116 career regular-season appearances, starting 91. Scott is the club’s all-time leader with 20 games played in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup play since 2009, while ranking first in club history with 19 starts in the CONCACAF Champions League. Scott attended Gonzaga University from 1998-2001 after growing up in Haiku, Hawaii and graduating from Maui High School. “It’s unlike me to draw individual attention to myself, and my focus for the rest of the season remains on helping my teammates and this club get to the playoffs,” continued Scott. “However, my family and I owe so much to the overall Seattle community and the organization, so we wanted to share these final weeks with everyone. I wouldn’t have wanted my career to go any other way and I couldn’t have picked a better place for us to put down roots as a family.”
A consistent contributor in the club’s MLS era, including six-consecutive seasons making double-digit appearances, Scott is tied with Lamar Neagle for fifth in club history with 116 MLS regular season appearances. He made 15 or more starts each season from 2012-2015, and was the starting center-back alongside Defender of the Year Chad Marshall down the club’s Supporters’ Shield-winning stretch in 2014. Scott made his 300th career appearance as a Sounder on September 24, 2014 against FC Dallas, and his 347 all-time appearances are nearly 100 more than the next closest player in Seattle history. “For roughly as long as I’ve been involved with this organization, Zach Scott has been a mainstay of the Seattle Sounders. His longevity and passion for the club are nothing short of incredible, and he has my gratitude
for 15 years of decorated service to his coaches and teammates, the overall organization and the city of Seattle,” said Sounders FC Owner Adrian Hanauer. “We are all so appreciative of everything Zach has done for the club, and while he may be concluding a storied playing career at season’s end, he’ll continue to be a friend of Sounders FC in our community for years to come.” Scott scored four goals across all competitions in his time with Sounders FC, with three of those tallies coming in big moments during the 2012 season. His lone MLS regular-season strike came in the form of a 63rd-minute match-winner in Colorado on April 14, 2012, connecting with an Alex Caskey corner-kick and smashing a header into the net. In the MLS Cup Playoffs later that season, Scott recorded a goal and an assist in a 2-1 win over the LA

Galaxy in the second leg of the Western Conference Semifinals, although the Rave Green fell on aggregate goals. He also scored Seattle’s only goal in the club’s loss in the 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final, heading in a late equalizer to force extra-time before Sporting Kansas City eventually won via penalties. Scott also scored in a 5-0 Fourth-Round 2014 Open Cup win over PSA Elite. “When I joined the USL Sounders in 2002, I never could have imagined the journey I would have with this young, aggressive rookie from Gonzaga. Fifteen seasons later, my relationship with Zach has grown to emulate the progression of the organization - an unwavering bond of commitment, growth and achievement,” said Sounders FC Interim Head Coach Brian Schmetzer. “It is difficult to imagine a match, training session or community event without Zach, but I am forever grateful for his 15 incredible seasons with our club. His commitment toward doing whatever it takes to help the team win, and striving to be his personal best are qualities that make him forever a Sounder.” The veteran defender joined the USL-1 Sounders ahead of the 2002 season, where he played as a regular starter at center-back and left-back for seven seasons. In a 2008 Open Cup Quarterfinal match, Scott scored the decisive penalty-kick against Kansas City. In all, Scott recorded 139 appearances, eight goals (including two game-winners) and three assists in league play. He finished sixth in games played and fifth in minutes (11,171) for the franchise. “From the moment I started working with this group, it didn’t take long for me to understand how much Zach Scott means to Seattle Sounders FC

on so many levels,” said Sounders FC General Manager & President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey. “Beyond the bevy of consistent performances with the organization over the course of his career, Zach has demonstrated a commitment on and off the field of what it means to be a Sounder. On behalf of Sounders FC, I’d like to congratulate him on an accomplished career.” Scott lives in West Seattle with his wife Alana and their three children. He was raised by his mother Linda in Haiku, Hawaii and earned all-state honors at Maui High School before earning a scholarship to play at Gonzaga University, where he was named AllWest Coast Conference as a senior in 2001. His brother Daniel also played for Gonzaga and enjoyed a strong professional career in the USL and NASL, most recently playing for the Carolina RailHawks.
Win Needed for Sounders as Postseason Looms By Will Parchman The cushion, however much of one there was in the first place, is officially gone. The Seattle Sounders need wins. And fast. Seattle’s results in its last two games were unusually pressing in terms of table positioning in the Western Conference. In each instance - away matches against Portland and then San Jose - the Sounders’ opposition sat either one or two points above them in the standings right on the edge of playoff positioning. And the Sounders walked away with just one point from both games. Normally, that wouldn’t be so apocalyptic. MLS is the most difficult road league on the planet, after all. But the Sounders aren’t in normal territory. They’re still trying to compensate for a frightfully slow summer that left them nine points out of the postseason by the end of July. They needed to make up points, and a win from either San Jose or Portland would’ve gone a long way toward putting them in good position to at least snatch up the sixth and final playoff spot. Instead, the trek up the table only got harder. A quick glance at the Western Conference table and then over to the quickly shrinking remaining schedule lays out the urgency of the moment. The Sounders have seven games left, starting with a Cascadia Cup matchup
22 · MATCHDAY
against the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday at home. After that, the Sounders have an even split between three road and home games, and the road games are a gauntlet: at LA Galaxy, Vancouver and FC Dallas. That puts added pressure on Seattle, six points out of the playoffs with two games in hand on sixth-place Portland, to collect maximum points at home. First against Vancouver, then against Chicago (Sept. 28) and Real Salt Lake (Oct. 23). The Sounders need wins. They can’t afford to drop more points.
The troubling news for this weekend is that Vancouver is as much in the playoff hunt as Seattle, making this a third straight weekend the Sounders spar with a team fighting to make the postseason in equal measure. The Whitecaps sit in seventh, two spots above Seattle with a two-point edge with two more games played. Saturday could go a long way in shaking up the race.
In the meantime, Seattle’s been treading water. Against Houston and San Jose, the Sounders needed late, manna-from-heaven equalizers from Nicolas Lodeiro to salvage otherwise forgettable performances. Those were sandwiched around a Portland derby match in which the team went down 4-0 at half to mark maybe the worst 45 minutes in the franchise’s MLS history.
To do that, the Sounders need to find an attacking spark missing since Clint Dempsey went out of the lineup. Dempsey was held out of an Aug. 24 away meeting against Houston to save his legs, and he’s missed the last two with an irregular heartbeat while the team is “cautiously optimistic” he will return from this year. He started running again this week, but he won’t play Saturday.
Considering the stakes, the team doesn’t have much of a choice. It needs a significantly better start to the match against Vancouver to hope to snag the much-needed three points. Considering this one is at home, finally, chances are significantly better. The Whitecaps are a confusing case study in how quickly life can turn in MLS. From July 16-Sept. 10, the
MATCHDAY · 23
Whitecaps were mired in a miserable slump. In that span they failed to grab a win in eight consecutive games, and within that run was a stretch of four consecutive losses in which the once high-flying Whitecaps only managed to score a single goal. This was certainly not the rip-roaring Vancouver side forward-thinking coach Carl Robinson introduced to the league with such gusto in 2015. And yet a 3-1 win over Columbus Crew SC on Sept. 10 switched the paradigm. Suddenly the Whitecaps are only four points out of the postseason picture despite not having won a single game in seven weeks. So yes, the Sounders have something to worry about.
The Whitecaps team the Sounders see will be in speculative doubt until the lineups are released. Captain and attacking talisman Pedro Morales sat on the bench and didn’t play due to a coach’s decision against Columbus, and the team won anyway. If that happens again, the Sounders will have to shift their focus to the wide positions, where Vancouver is most dangerous. Cristian Techera and Christian Bolaños are both tricky threats, which will put a significant amount of stress on the Sounders’ fullbacks. And that brings us to the most pressing question for the Sounders on Saturday; what does the back line look like? The Sounders have still yet to pitch a shutout under interim coach Brian Schmetzer, and while his deployment options are relatively limited on the attacking end in terms of who he has available, he’s suddenly flush with defenders. Though it’s unclear if Brad Evans will play on Saturday – he tweaked his back leading up to last weekend’s game in San Jose - center back Roman Torres is healthy again and back to his old form. If Evans sits there’s no debate about Tyrone Mears at right back, despite two straight tough outings. And while Joevin Jones has some potential at left mid, he still looks like a lock on the back line this weekend. The Sounders, of course, cannot be mathematically eliminated from the playoffs with a loss on Saturday. Those days aren’t yet upon us. But a loss any loss - at this point does serious damage to their hopes, a loss at home in any of the team’s remaining four games puts one foot in the offseason. To avoid the other, they’ll need to win.

Fuerza Román first start since the injury, it wasn’t his first time on the pitch. Interim Head Coach Brian Schmetzer called his number at halftime of an August 28 loss at Portland, leaning on Torres’ strength to combat the physical play of Timbers forward Fandendo Adi. He also started and played a full 90 minutes for Panama in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Jamaica on September 2. However, playing his first full 90 minutes of Sounders soccer after walking out of the tunnel in the same place the he fell a year earlier made the moment all the more special.
It was almost exactly one year to the day. Same stadium. Same opponent. For some, the memory would be too vivid and too painful to experience again. For Román Torres, there was no place he would rather be. Torres made his return to the Sounders FC starting XI last Saturday against the San Jose Earthquakes at Avaya Stadium, 364 days after suffering a devastating knee injury in the same building on September 12 of last year. What came between was a near full-12 months of rehab to once again suit up in Rave Green and man the back line for the Sounders. Torres played a full 90 minutes against the Quakes, helping Seattle to a 1 -1 road draw thanks to a late equalizer from Nicolás Lodeiro. The burly, sixfoot-two center back commanded the defense with his usual imposing presence, holding San Jose scoreless save for a first-half Chris Wondolowski goal following a Seattle mis-clearance. While last weekend marked Torres’

With the Rave Green making a lateseason push for the 2016 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, Schmetzer’s club welcomes any and all reinforcements. They got help on the offensive front with the signing of Lodeiro, who now has three goals and six assists in seven games. Now comes Torres, a hulking presence added to the defense with a championship pedigree that includes three league titles in Colombia and two in Panama. “I have been working hard and with a few more games I will be back to the level I was at before,” Torres told media last week. It’s been a long year for Torres, who spent time rehabbing in Colombia and Panama in addition to Seattle, but now he will be able to make a significant impact in a short window. In 135 minutes of action, the Sounders have allowed just one goal with Torres on the pitch. A string of similar defensive performances over the next two months will set the foundation for the Sounders, as they pursue another postseason run and the elusive MLS Cup trophy.
