S2 MATCHDAY 2015 INAUGURAL SEASON
VS SOUNDERS FC 2 VS. OKC ENERGY FC FRIDAY MAY 15, 2015 STARFIRE STADIUM
MATCH PREVIEW
VS #SEAvOKC Nearly a month ago, Sounders FC 2 (4-3-1, 13 points) was playing its second match in three days on the road against Oklahoma City Energy FC (2-1-2, 8 points). Although the Rave Green were able to strike first via Darwin Jones, the Energy rallied back with two goals, including an 86th – minute goal to take all three points.
started each game in the midfield, due to a red card suspension. “It is a big loss for us to lose our starter, but we have guys who we are confident in that can fill that position,” said S2 Head Coach Ezra Hendrickson. “Guys always seem to perform their best playing at home, so I’m sure that will give us a boost.”
Now it is S2’s chance to host OKC at Starfire Stadium where the Sounders are a perfect 4-0-0. However, the team will be playing without Giuliano Frano, who has
Energy FC will also be playing without starter Cyprian Hedrick, who is serving the second of a twomatch ban for kicking a downed St. Louis FC player in his last match.

OKC’s Danni Konig is currently tied for second in Goals Per Game in the league, and proved his scoring prowess against S2, netting the game-winner in the last meeting between these clubs. Although the Energy have only scored eight goals this season, the
club has allowed only seven goals, holding S2 to only one goal, one of only two times the Rave Green have been held to a goal or less. Meanwhile, S2 has never scored less than two goals while playing at Starfire Stadium. “Visiting teams know going into the stadium how hard it is to play there, and I think that effects the way they play,” said S2 captain Amadou Sanyang. “It allows us to do what we want and execute our game plan when we play at home.”
With eight points on the season so far, Energy FC Head Coach and former Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen will be looking for three road points to start a push from the middle of the table. Currently tied for third place in a tightly contested USL Western Conference another home win would put S2 at 16 points and, at least temporarily, into first place. Going into the weekend, only two points separate the top five teams in the West, which is something S2 would like to change in its favor.
Overall Record 4-3-1 Goals Scored 17 Goals Scored Per Game 2.13 Goals Allowed 14 Goals Allowed Per Game 1.75

DID YOU KNOW? In both regular-season and Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup play, Sounders FC has never lost a game while playing at Starfire Stadium. The streak has continued with S2, as the new development squad is a perfect 4-00 while playing in front of the home support. The Rave Green hope to continue the streak tonight, and this Wednesday as the team enters the Open Cup in Round 2 against Kitsap Pumas SC.

Rookie goalkeeper Charlie Lyon soaking up experience in goal with S2 Story by Branden Griffith
S
tanding in goal on the grass pitch at Starfire Sports, the Sounders FC’s training facility, 23-year-old Sounders FC 2 goalkeeper Charlie Lyon soaked in the experience and knowledge of the club’s two veteran net-minders, Stefan Frei and Troy Perkins. Lyon, in his first professional season with S2, has started each of the club’s eight USL matches. On a First Team contract, the Marquette graduate spends a majority of his time training with Frei and Perkins, facing shots in training from some of the best forwards MLS has to offer. “It has been huge to have two quality keepers like Stefan and Troy, who are so experienced, helping me

in training every day,” said Lyon. “Along with Tommy [Dutra’s] help, training with this club has really pushed my game forward. Just getting the opportunity to play in a Sounders jersey has been really fun so far.” Playing all four years of college eligibility with Marquette captaining the side, Lyon received a wide selection of honors including a corecipient of the Big East Goalkeeper of the Year award in both his junior and senior years. He finished his time with the Golden Eagles as the school’s all-time leader in Goals Against Average. Lyon has recorded one shutout in his first eight matches, making 16 saves for the Rave Green’s USL side. Although the team hasn’t
been able to come up with a win on the road, the shot-stopper and his team have maintained a perfect 4-0-0 record at home. “Ultimately the responsibility falls on the goalkeeper, whether I could have saved it or not, to help my team be in the best position to stop those chances,” said Lyon. “Starting with myself and continuing with the backline, we are going to continue to work on keeping that goals-against average down and start getting those shutouts we have been looking for.” Transitioning to the pros and living in Seattle has been a big change for the Illinois native, but Lyon is taking it in stride. “In school, you wake up and maybe have a morning practice, but you go to class and maybe have something later in the day without much down time,” said Lyon. “Here, you get come in, you work hard and you work smart, then you make sure you take care of yourself the rest of the day.”
In the team’s first season, Lyon is hoping to make the most of the opportunity to develop with the first team, and he sees the experience with S2 as a chance to grow as a professional alongside his new teammates. “We have good team chemistry, and you can especially tell on the road when we get to spend a lot more time together,” said Lyon. “For a lot of us, it’s our first year as a professional athlete, so with all the ‘firsts’ guys are working through in this league, we are doing a good job of leaning on each other to get through that, and that we will continue to grow as a team and continue to get results.”
“IT HAS BEEN HUGE TO HAVE TWO QUALITY KEEPERS LIKE STEFAN AND TROY, WHO ARE SO EXPERIENCED, HELPING ME IN TRAINING EVERY DAY”
