MATCH PREVIEW

VS #SEAvPOR With a two-goal lead going into the second half against Kitsap Pumas SC, Sounders FC 2 looked to have smooth sailing into the Third Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. However, after two periods of extra time, the Rave Green were looking down on a 4-2 final score at Starfire Stadium that they had to fight in order to get. The victory set the stage for drama in the Third Round. two days after defeating Kitsap, the group took a trip south to face Portland Timbers 2 on the road in USL regular season play, the team it faces in the Third Round the following Wednesday. Until that Friday night, S2 hadn’t been able to pick up more than one point all season while playing away from home, and after 120 minutes logged only two days before, things looked bleak for the embattled side. However, that didn’t stop the team from putting on a show, scoring two goals along the way and coming back to Seattle with all three points. “We were faced with breaking the streak of being winless on the

road, and those guys responded to the challenge,” said S2 Head Coach Ezra Hendrickson. “It says a lot about the team and the kind of players we have here, not just their ability, but their effort and resolve to win tough games when you need to.” Set to face T2 for the second time in six days tonight, S2 looks to preserve its perfect 5-00 home record and advance to face MLS side Real Salt Lake in the Fourth Round. S2 leads the series against T2 with an overall record of 2-0-0 all-time, and hopes to continue that streak on Wednesday. “You win or you go home, but with extra incentive and [them] looking for payback,” added Hendrickson. “We have been very good at home and we want to continue to make Starfire our fortress.”

Kitsap, S2 started six players who are 19-years-old or younger, including four from the Sounders FC Academy, with two more from the Academy on the bench. With the youth starting to fill in the gaps for S2 in Open Cup play, there is now a chance for fans to witness the future of the entire organization riding on the talent being developed right at home. New signing Sérgio Mota will also have a chance to make his home-debut after making his first appearance for the club on Friday night, assisting Andy Craven’s goal in the 2-0 win.

VERSATILE FRANO FINDING HIS FORM AND PLENTY OF MINUTES WITH STARTING XI Story by Branden Grifith

S

ince joining Sounders FC 2 on opening day of the season, Giuliano Frano has appeared in all but one match for the club. On Friday night against Portland Timbers 2, he found himself in a position he hadn’t played since joining the Rave Green.

the First Team and I got put in at right back during a 10 vs. 10 scrimmage,” Frano said. “I had a talk with Ezra where I told him I played in that position for a couple years in college, and I would just need a game or two to get back in the groove if he needed me.”

Starting at right back for the first time since his Boston College days, Frano helped the S2 defense to its first win on the road, and its second shutout against T2 at Merlo Field. Usually a defensive midfielder for S2, Frano wasn’t entirely unfamiliar with his new role.

The fullback positions for S2 have been a revolving door throughout the season so far and with minor injuries along with First Team call-ups, players are gathering opportunities to learn new roles with the development squad.

“I had some time to train with 7 | MATCHDAY

Although it had been a few years, it didn’t take long for

Frano to acclimate to the new spot on the pitch. “The first half, I was pretty quiet and not really communicating with guys, but when we came out during the second half, [Sam] Garza and I figured things out and it was a lot easier to play,” said Frano. “With the accumulation of minutes I have played over the last couple days, I started to get tired toward the end and let a few opportunities through I don’t think I would have if I was fully fresh.” Frano doesn’t see the switch to defense as a permanent change in position, but knew that, when it came down to the wire, he would

be able to get the job done. By helping the team to its second shutout, Coach Hendrickson will feel confident in using the Canadian midfielder as a replacement when necessary. Set to face Timbers 2 again tonight in the Third Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, Frano is cautiously optimistic about the rematch. “We can’t go into this match with a sense of complacency and overconfidence just because we beat them the last two times,” Frano said. We need to think about them as the strong, fast team we faced in that first match.”
