“The relationship between live electronics and percussion has a long history, stretching back to the early work of John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, David Tudor, and Max Neuhaus to name just a few. In many of their works they chose to focus on the timbral qualities as much as the rhythmic aspects of percussion, extending this with the use of found objects, prepared instruments, and live electronics. Each of the artists featured in Resonant Frequencies - Mark Wastell, Burkhard Beins, Will Guthrie, and Bill Thompson - explores a similar territory in their own practice. In a series of solos, duets and a final quartet, this crossover between percussion and live electronics is fully explored as the artists improvise in various combinations during the week.”

Sunday 8 November 7.00pm The Lemon Tree, Aberdeen £7, £5 students, under 18 and jobseekers In association with the Lemon Tree

Mark Wastell and Will Guthrie Following the format of the first evening, Mark Wastell and Will Guthrie each perform a solo set and a duet in the beautiful lens gallery of the Fraserburgh Lighthouse Museum. (free bus available from Aberdeen, email info@sound-scotland.co.uk)

Burkhard Beins, Will Guthrie, Bill Thompson and Mark Wastell Giving the UK première of Bill Thompson’s Gates, these four musicians come together, over the course of an hour, to explore the intersection of live electronics, percussion, improvisation and composition. They will be supported by James Wyness.

Resonant Frequencies: Connect 10.30am: Richard Barrett will discuss his work with the ensemble fORCH, many of his compositional strategies used with the group and demonstrate his computer instrumentation. 1.30pm: Burkhard Beins will lead a workshop on Open Improvisation and Graphic Notation. Participants will be introduced to the sign system of adapt/oppose and selected parts of the piece will be played in various versions. 14 places available: instrumentalists of all levels are welcome. (Please book at info@sound-scotland.co.uk)

fORCH fORCH is a new kind of contemporary music “orchestra” whose combination of “pure” improvised music and composed frameworks doesn’t recognise a hierarchy between composer and performers. fORCH is an expansion of Richard Barrett and Paul Obermayer’s electroacoustic duo FURT to include Phil Minton and Ute Wassermann (voices), John Butcher (saxophones), Paul Lovens (percussion), Wolfgang Mitterer (piano/electronics), Rhodri Davies (celtic and concert harps), Peter Evans (trumpet) and Aleksander Kolkowski (viola).

A Resonant Frequencies weekend ticket is available, allowing entrance to all events. Prices: £15, £9 students and under 18s.

Prices: £15, £9 students and under 18s.

sound lecture 2009: James MacMillan “Aesthetic plurality and licence in British contemporary music. Is it better here than elsewhere?” James MacMillan discusses the great strengths of contemporary music in the UK; its plurality of styles and ideas, its openness to every possibility and apparent lack of the ideological straitjackets imposed in mainland Europe. Referring directly to his own experiences and those of other modern composers, MacMillan takes on those critics who paint British music as conservative and insular, and suggests that Marxist ideology has been a detrimental influence in understanding modernity in music.

9th to 14th November “As sound is time based or durational it is tied to space and therefore place. It is the indivisible aspect of time and place and their contribution to a precise conciousness which intrigues me. By juxtaposing sound and image, not always using matching field recordings and real time, I want to draw attention to temporality, to question realities, to take time to experience fleeting moments and their universal qualities. Sound and visual are of equal importance in my work, I want them to comment on each other and present shifting perspectives. And by interrupting the natural link between sound and image I want to try and raise the viewer’s awareness that they are not the centre of the piece. Exposing the construction of some pieces is an attempt to suggest an alternative reality to the viewer.” Left Bank, Tarland | Free
