sound lecture 2010: Tom Service So long, and thanks for all the noise: 2010 and the end of musical history. It has already happened. Musical history spluttered to its demise somewhere near the start of the 21st century. The questions are: how? why? and can we do anything about it? There are few great compositional figures who aren't already vastly aged, from Steve Reich to Elliott Carter, from Philip Glass to Pierre Boulez, there's no single path for younger generations of composers to follow, it's all been done before in every context you can imagine, and there are no sounds to discover that haven't already been heard. All that, and you can hardly make a living from it. The doomsayers were right. Or - were they? Tom Service will be looking for symptoms and solutions in an era of musical post-history. Perhaps living at the end of time isn't such a bad thing, after all... Tom Service writes about music for The Guardian, and presents BBC Radio 3's Music Matters.

A collaboration between sound artist Bill Thompson and choreographer Ian Spink, The ANA Project explores the practical considerations involving the dissolution of the ‘artefact’ of composition within the context of a dance theatre narrative, in a series of ‘fragments’ of sound, music and movement. The themes explored are based on two real-life events. Two travellers: one - on foot, the other - by air, travel the same route, from opposite starting points. Their individual journeys span a continent, yet each arrives at a vastly different understanding of themselves and of the landscape around them.

John Redhead Remains of Occitania A Cathar Forensic in words, images and sounds Remains of Occitania is an orchestrated dialogue with the landscape and rocks. A multimedia intervention, as much of the future as the past - of rituals, riddle and chaos across the landscape of the Albigensian Crusade, from Montsegur, Languedoc to Rosslyn, Scotland. From field recordings of Montsegur and Rosslyn, John hopes an impossible music will emerge, a textual song, as part of a forensic together with words and images, as the mountain landscape itself reveals a supernatural audio visual library. The exhibition will run until Saturday 13 November. Opening hours: Thursday to Saturday 11am-5pm.
