Welcome to the 2013 sound festival! Shortlisted in 2012 for an RPS Music Award, the 2013 sound festival yet again brings you a varied programme of some of the best new music from across the UK and beyond. We open the festival with an exciting new work Framed Against The Sky which members of local communities have been helping ‘outlandish’ composer Brian Irvine and ‘roofer by day poet by night’ Billy Letford create over the past few months. If you want to check out the progress of the project go to www. framedagainstthesky.com. Between 24-27 October we will be exploring the colourful world of microtonal music with the University of Aberdeen. This weekend features workshops and performances of microtonal works with new commissions from Christopher Fox and Geoff Palmer, and including performances by the Edinburgh Quartet, Robin Michael, Ensemble Al-Kindi & the Whirling Dervishes of Damascus... During the weekend, you can also join us at Aberdeen restaurant MUSA for our late night soundsessions to relax, have a drink and listen to something a bit different. This year we also look at how sound and image interact and have some incredible audio/ visual treats for you to feast your ears and eyes upon including Stephen Deazley’s ManHigh, Joby Burgess’ Powerplant, and a kaleidoscopic tapestry of sound from Leafcutter John. We invite you to immerse your senses and imaginations and join us on yet another ‘magical mystery tour’ through the world of new music!

Shades of sound 4 days of microtonal music For thousands of year’s music from all over the world has used tuning systems different from those most commonly used in western music in recent times. These systems use microtonal steps, or intervals, which can be smaller or larger than the ones we use in our familiar scales, and which help create subtle shades of colour and feeling. “Blue notes” in the blues and jazz are a perfect example of microtones. If you can you hear the difference between a singer singing “bluesy” or “straight” then your ears are already tuned in to microtonality. The expanded palette of sounds that becomes available through microtones is increasingly being explored by composers. This weekend will look at how microtonality is being used in contemporary music through a series of performances and talks. Come and explore with us. In association with the University of Aberdeen
