Bassoons, opera and the North… 2017 sees the beginning of sound’s fiveyear project around endangered musical instruments. We’ll leave it to you to guess what these instruments might be in future years but we start the ball rolling with the bassoon and are really pleased to be working with internationally acclaimed bassoonists such as Pascal Gallois, Peter Whelan, Laurence Perkins and Lesley Wilson, who will guide us through established new music repertoire for bassoon as well as brand new works to be premiered at the festival from Sonia Allori, Rory Comerford, Pete Stollery and a co-commission from sound, Pascal Gallois and our ensemble-inassociation, Red Note, from Benedict Mason. Revisiting the genre of opera, last featured in 2012, we present a number of events towards the end of the festival, including
welcome
Welcome to this year's soundfestival a celebration of the pioneering work of Raymond Scott, the first performance at sound of work from David Toop, a welcome return of one of sound’s Out of the Box commissions from 2012, The Garden and the acclaimed Belongings (co-commission from sound and Tête à Tête) which takes place in the dining car of the Caledonian Sleeper from London to Aberdeen, with a further performance during the festival on the Deeside Railway. There'll also be pop-up operas around Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire on Thu 9, Fri 10 and Sat 11 November. Look out for them! In association with the University of Aberdeen, sound will host a three-day series of events under the banner Sounding the North, examining if there is such a thing as a “northern” sound, through contemporary classical, folk, jazz and electroacoustic music, featuring Quatuor Bozzini (Montréal), Arild Andersen (Norway), James Clapperton (Norway), invisiblEARts (Scotland), Song Circus (Norway), Edinburgh Quartet (Scotland) and Erik Mikael Karlsson (Sweden). …and, of course, there’ll be much, much more; family events, regular late-night sessions at the Belmont, and plenty of opportunities to get your hands dirty with new music. Fiona Robertson (Festival Director) and Pete Stollery (Chair)

Special events Sounding the North
SN
The University of Aberdeen, in collaboration with soundfestival, is holding a three-day gathering to explore the validity and nature of the concept of a distinctive northern musical voice. Papers, workshops and presentations will seek to contribute to our understanding of the essence of a northern sound world, aiming to enhance our understanding of how, if it exists, such a sound world can be defined. Publicised events are open to all. There may be additional events not included in this brochure at the time of publication. Please visit our website for current details.

The English poet, John Keats, used to entertain his friends at parties with his imitation of the bassoon. Jeremy Thurlow’s Blithe Wine takes this association further, painting various aspects of Keats’ characterebullience, melancholy, romance, drunken fun-in six movements for bassoon quintet. Keats’ favourite instrument is further explored in three solo etudes, as well as in a recently-composed duo for bassoon and viola by the Scottish composer, Edward McGuire. Toru Takemitsu’s Autumn from his work for violin duo, Rocking Mirror Daybreak pursues a theme which corresponds to one of Keats’ most famous odes, while Errollyn Wallen’s Intense, from her work for violin and viola, Five Postcards, reflects, once more, Keats’ ebullience and vivacity.

Mozart vs Machine
In association with Aberdeen Performing Arts
6pm | The Lemon Tree, Aberdeen £10, £5 (conc) A Mahogany Opera Group production developed through Mahogany's Various Stages programme with generous support from Sound and Music.
O
Mozart vs Machine is a high-octane mashup of Mozart opera, electronic sound and video, bringing some of history’s most iconic artists together in a theatrical sci-figameshow encounter. Alone in his Manhattan research laboratory, Raymond Scott, the father of electronic music, is developing a machine to generate random musical patterns. When one of his devices accidentally tears a hole in the universe it distorts time and brings him face to face with classical composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart vs Machine is an irreverent collage of music and theatre that blurs boundaries of opera and performance art. Think you know Mozart? Think again…
