CASE STUDY
Pro Audio Systems Produces Magical Projection
The Grade II listed Queens Hotel has been a majestic presence on Leeds’ City Square since 1937. During the recent festive season, it was the focus of a spectacular art installation which saw LeedsBID (Leeds Business Improvement District) collaborate with Barcelona studio Onionlab on ‘Magical Night at The Queens’, a visual spectacular which used the Hotel’s art-deco architecture as a canvas for multiple projections.
The innovative project, which embraced state-of-the-art technology and world-class design, required the highest level of technical expertise. LeedsBID engaged Pro Audio Systems (PAS) to supply every technical aspect of the show.
PAS’s Joel Sheldon comments: “Our first contact with LeedsBID was in 2022 when we provided them with some large format displays and audio playback. We then worked on a project to adapt an electric vehicle as a mobile advertising unit.”
PAS oversaw the specification, supply and installation of all the projectors, networking, playback and control, as well as a substantial audio system. Its team designed video systems to ensure seamless projection onto the ‘canvas’ of The Queens. PAS also co-ordinated a number of subcontractors to implement a variety of ancillary elements.
Chris Beardwell of PAS comments:
“Once every feature of the building’s frontage had been laser-mapped by Autoplot, we constructed two 7.5m scaffold towers on City Square to house the projectors. We needed significant elevation to achieve uninterrupted projection with good sight lines, avoiding any shadows.
“Our friends at Raven Staging obliged, with safety and protection from the elements of paramount importance. Given the possibility of bad weather, we needed to eliminate every potential risk, so we installed weather-shielding, heaters, temperature monitors, and even a weather station to feed information to our control centre.”
Ten Panasonic projectors were deployed. Networking, playback, and control was via a combination of Netgear network switches fully loaded with Fibre interconnectivity, Lightware DVI over fibre video extenders, Green Hippo Karst+ media servers, and Datapath FX 4 controllers. Chris continues:
“An expert partner supplied the media servers and worked with us on aligning the projectors and programming the media servers to ensure that we brought Onion-lab’s vision to life.” PAS installed a Meyer Sound system
to provide clear, powerful audio in a crowded outdoor environment. In an imaginative move, the electric vehicle which PAS had previously customised was deployed to caption the show’s audio for deaf people.
From a logistical standpoint PAS had to work within strict parameters. Set-up and strip-down times were limited, so careful planning and co-ordination was vital. Dave Simpson of PAS reflects:
