They call themselves homegrown, but La Casa del Taco seems to make their way into everyone’s homes lately. A botana for two actually serves beef or chicken fajita, tortillas, tortilla chips, guacamole and hot sauce enough for four. The music you hear is that of enthusiastic margarita drinkers and large families, grateful to share some zesty salsa with one another, or the occasional strolling mariachi group. Mexican Cuisine

A highlight is a replica of the small statue of the Immaculate Conception of San Juan de los Lagos, Jalisco, Mexico. Life sized bronze sculptures mark the walk of the Twelve Stations of Christ. Church is open daily 6 am - 8 pm.. Chihuahua Woods Preserve - 243 ac. preserve with many bird species, over 100 documented plant species, large cactus community. Public access by permission only. Chimney Park - 2 mi. south of Mission on FM 1016 Site of Mission Canal Company pumping plant, instrumental in the early agricultural development of the area. Now part of Chimney Park RV Resort. old Hidalgo Pumphouse - 902 S. 2nd, Hidalgo - In the early 1900’s, irrigation began transforming the Valley from a brushland desert to lush farmland. This first class museum is the restoration of one of the old pumping plants, with its original steam engines and pumps now silent, but still in place. A protected walkway allows visitors to tour the old plant, and the Visitors Center contains more exhibits. Group tours are available with advance notice. Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m.. 956-843-8686. Iwo Jima Memorial & Museum - 320 Iwo Jima blvd., Harlingen - Original sculpture used in casting the famous bronzed Marine Corps Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. A WWII museum located across the street. Open daily. 412-2207. La Lomita Mission - 3 mi. south of Exp. 83 on FM 1016 and 1/4 mi. west over levee, Mission - From the 1767 Spanish grant of Joseph A. Cantu; land supported the priests and their charities. Original Chapel, built in 1865 was relocated to present site in 1899. Open daylight hours. 580-8760. Los Ebanos Ferry - 14 mi. west of Mission on US 83 then 3 mi. south on FM 886, Los Ebanos - Last remaining handdrawn ferry across the Rio Grande in the U.S. One time known as “Smugglers Crossing.” Fee to cross. Open daily 8 am - 4 pm. McAllen Heritage Center - 301 S. Main St., located inside the historic old McAllen Post Office building now known as “La Placita” directly across from JC Penney in downtown McAllen. Open Tuesday-Friday 1-5pm, Saturday 11am4pm.
