From the Editor With both IMTS and FABTECH cancelled due to the pandemic, 2020 has been much different than any previous year. While these changes have heavily impacted many, there are still positives to focus on for this quarter. In June, the Cutting Tool Market Report, provided by the Association for Manufacturing Technology (AMT) highlighted that cutting tool consumption totaled $150.6 million dollars here in the United States. This is up 10.1 percent from May. Additionally, AMT’s United States Manufacturing Technology Orders report highlighted a 56 percent increase over May. This June orders reached their highest monthly total for this year at $346.7 million. This highlights the health of the manufacturing industry. While overall numbers are down in comparison to 2019, with the impact of widespread shutdowns, and general uncertainty, these numbers reflect an improving outlook. Spending in the automotive sector continued to be high, but also the report showed that agricultural manufacturing and HVAC commercial refrigeration had nearly quadrupled and tripled their spending from 2019. This quarter, Universal Robots, shares an example of how RCM Industries, a Chicago-based manufacturer of die casting parts with essential clients in the medical, military, and automotive industries, has adapted to the pandemic. UR has had a long-proven history with helping manufacturers not only close skill gaps but eliminate dangerous and repetitive tasks. Running a skeleton crew, UR’s collaborative robots have helped them maintain operations and social distance guidelines. Optimizing manufacturing processes with standard or customized solutions is second nature to SUHNER. In threading applications, particularly Outside Diameter (OD) threads, cycle times are dictated by the OD threading operation itself. Working with WAGNER and utilizing three SUHNER BEX15 machining units, a solution to dramatically reduce cycle times in this difficult machining process was developed. Learn more in this Quarter’s Process feature. Our Q3 Product Showcase also features over thirty of the top products and solutions available to manufacturers. Before I go, I want to ask how has your own operation had to adapt during the pandemic? Email us at editorial@indmacdig.com and share your own experiences. By continuing to follow health and safety precautions, we can continue to adapt to the ongoing threat of COVID-19.

Rahul Garg — Vice President, Industrial Machinery and Heavy Equipment, Siemens Digital Industries Software Could you give us an overview of the general service areas you cover for the industrial sector? With the major shifts that are currently occurring within the industrial environment, we’ve identified Advanced Machine Engineering, Next Generation Machine Design, and Engineering Data Management as three target areas that demand particular attention. Change no longer comes slowly, customer demands are constant and ongoing. OEMs must rethink how they meet their customer’s needs in terms of customization, increased productivity, hyper-automation, and adaptability. Global competition must be taken into consideration as well, no matter your geographic market. The companies that will survive this transition are rethinking how they will incorporate and manage additional machine complexity, how will they manage this exponential internal complexity? And this applies both to machine builders as well as to entire manufacturing systems.
Who is the ideal candidate for your technology? Does a company need to be of a certain size, or of a particular technological maturity, to qualify? If you are designing and manufacturing a product, we can help, from the smallest 10-person startup to the largest manufacturers in the world. Let me give you a few examples. We work with a small, 50-person company that is designing drones to deliver blood in Africa. This is a highly specific application, of course, involving singular flight and weather conditions, maintenance concerns, and supply chain issues, all of which must be anticipated in advance in order for this critical operation to prove successful. As an aside – and this is especially helpful for smaller companies – we will conduct a “maturity analysis” that allows us to benchmark them against similar companies in terms of size, revenues, market activities, and draw up a roadmap of the technology solutions we offer that might be best suited for their needs. At the same time, we work with heavy equipment manufacturers at a much larger scale, designing some of the largest mining and off-road heavy duty industrial equipment in the world. Companies of this scale require constant, immediate, and intricate data on every aspect of their product. Siemens provides access to that information stream. We work with machine

tool builders, additive manufacturers, providers of packaging for consumer products, companies involved in robotics, textiles, warehouse logistics, printing machines, pumps, you name it.
How do you provide initial training and then software updates over time? We take a multi-angle approach to providing training opportunities. During initial implementation there is an emphasis on achieving and realizing the value the customer is seeking through its relationship with Siemens. One of the first things we do is welcome new users into a community of their peers located around the world who are using similar technologies and can offer insights based on this own experience. We find this kind of communication and interaction to be invaluable. Then we offer periodic classroom experiences at our technical centers, virtual education events, and we provide online customer portals in which their Siemens technology history is preloaded and a variety of useful functions can be conducted. We also have annual live events, which bring Siemens engineers and technicians together for two or three days virtually to discuss challenges and solutions. As for software updates, we offer them automatically, but we find that most customers prefer to handle that as a manual operation, so we’ll send them a notification when an update is available for their particular system and they can choose to download at their convenience.
Siemens Digital Industries Software has certainly earned its reputation for industrial synchronicity. There is another solution known as MindSphere, which involves collecting real-time operational data from machine tools that can be fed back into design software for immediate improvements to any equipment produced from that point forward. When you connect all of your machines and aggregate the relevant data into one data lake, you can perform concise and powerful analysis to optimize your processes. It’s just another fresh way of looking at how we do business in this new industrial world. Learn more at www.sw.siemens.com.

Now companies realize the importance of being self-sufficient, or at least less dependent on foreign manufacturing and suppliers, and are reaching out to us.

TALKING SHOP WITH: Harry C. Moser — Founder and President, Reshoring Initiative This year marks the Initiative’s 10th anniversary. Tell us how you got started, and what you’ve accomplished during that time. I established the Reshoring Initiative in 2010. I had retired as president of Agie Charmilles, which is now GF Machining Solutions, after 25 years, and I was developing strategies for how U.S. manufacturers could pick products where they could avoid competing with China. Then I realized a better approach would be to figure out exactly how to compete with China head to head instead. That’s when I developed the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) Estimator, a free online tool that allows businesses to compare the total cost of domestic and offshored parts or products. The TCO Estimator is used by OEMs to buy smarter and by suppliers to sell smarter against imports by providing this in-depth data to their customers. It’s an invaluable tool in helping build the case for why U.S. manufacturers should be producing and buying locally. So as we worked on developing these types of industry resources – including building an open online library with articles and information related to reshoring – we began developing partnerships within the industry and also created a board of directors that has been very helpful. We had many people volunteer their time and expertise, including a law firm that worked pro bono to get us set up as a 501c3 organization and obtain trademarks. Reshoring was the new trend and we really began to grow by leaps and bounds. Soon I was making more than 100 presentations around the country each year, and the national and industry media started to follow our efforts and write about us. We gained recognition from
10 | IMD | Q3 2020
government agencies, and I even traveled to meet President Obama at the White House. Then, when Donald Trump was elected to office, reshoring surged to 180,000 jobs announced in 2017 because of his business-friendly tax policies. The surge moderated to still high, but not record, levels in 2018 and 2019 primarily due to business uncertainty caused by the trade war.
How has the global recession, trade wars, and the pandemic affected U.S. manufacturers’ attitudes about reshoring, or keeping jobs at home in the first place? Before these things began happening, starting a conversation about reshoring was a harder sell. Now companies realize the importance of being self-sufficient, or at least less dependent on foreign manufacturing and suppliers, and are reaching out to us. They understand that the global supply chain is in serious disrepair, and the U.S. framework must be rethought and made to be more robust. We mostly work with small-to-medium-size companies, with 20-500 employees, and I think U.S. manufacturers have come to realize that it’s time to get a closer grip on the full scale of their business activities, the health of their supply chain, and doing what they can to take back jobs and revenue lost to overseas competition. So I see a lot to be hopeful about in the direction being taken by companies of this size, but I still think the large corporations are making some less productive choices. The best actions such companies could take to address income inequality would be to reshore manufacturing, creating new jobs here in the States, both

in urban and rural areas, creating millions of jobs and helping the individuals and the economy get back on their feet.
So what new resources or programs do you have in the works? Quite a few, actually. One is called the Import Substitution Program (ISP), which was created to help suppliers and other organizations motivate importing companies to produce or source domestically more of the products they’re selling in the U.S. For example, a supplier or contract manufacturer identifies products that it makes most competitively. We identify the biggest importers of those products. The supplier then uses the TCO Estimator to convince the importer to source domestically. An equipment supplier or economic developer could use the same tools to convince the importer to invest and again produce the products here. We have different ISP templates for working through manufacturing companies, economic development organizations, trade associations, technology suppliers, and manufacturing extension partnerships. In addition, we have the Supply Chain Gaps Program, where we will identify products with no or minimal domestic production, and where there is a large volume of imports. We then provide this information to U.S. manufacturers who can review the list, consider the potential, and choose five items they would be interested in beginning to produce themselves and become the only or primary U.S. manufacturer. Alternatively, economic developers could reach out to the foreign suppliers and convince one to start
manufacturing here. The Reshoring Initiative then supplies all the hard market data they require – annual import volume, largest importers, foreign suppliers, etc. – and also provides training on the TCO Estimator to help guide them through the decision-making process. So these are just a few examples of the ways we’re reaching out to U.S. manufacturers. It’s really gratifying to see how well our work is being received. Companies can use our tools to accelerate out of the current recession. For more information, go online to reshorenow.org.
It’s worth taking a good hard look at the AF50 Bandsaw as something that can really
increase your productivity and
your extra time in your shop.” -Ryan Wenner, Seneca Woodworking
Cut stock isn’t just nice to have. It’s a must-have for any business or shop looking to reduce wasted materials and increase profits. Getting it pre-cut from your supplier eats up those profits. And cutting it manually — even if it’s a few hours a week — adds up over time. Tormach’s AF50 Autofeed Bandsaw could be the missing link in your machine shop. It reliably cuts metals of all types to your specifications. More importantly, it frees up employees to do other work, effectively doubling productivity while it runs. And at a new list price of $3,995, your return on investment could come in as little as a few months.

Talking Shop We test the equipment we repair – not just components, but the entire system – on stands that our engineers design prior to their return to service.
FEATURING:
TALKING SHOP WITH: Andrew Horner — Marketing Manager, Radwell International, Inc. Could you give us an overview of the company’s history, and who was involved? I’d be glad to. Jerry Radwell and Jim Speck founded Speck Industrial Controls in 1979. Later Jim left Speck and Jerry Radwell took over ownership, but health issues forced his son, Brian – the current president and CEO of Radwell International – to step up at a very young age to keep the company alive. This dedication paid off when he realized that there was a niche to be filled in terms of providing surplus parts and equipment to industrial buyers, who had nowhere to turn but eBay at the time. This epiphany led to explosive growth and allowed the company to move from approximately 7,000 square feet of space into a new 110,000 square-foot facility in 2005. That really marks the beginning of the Radwell’s upward trajectory toward becoming the global entity it is today.
Can you give us some idea of how the company is structured? You can break it down into four areas. The first is Industrial Electronic Repair for manufacturing and automated components, and the second is Certified Pre-Owned, or Surplus Parts and equipment. The third is New Equipment Sales from companies such as Baldor/ABB, Danaher Controls, Siemens, and SICK, among many others, and the fourth is Asset Recovery. This allows us to step in and assist manufacturers with surplus equipment they’re interested in selling. Scenarios run the gamut from a company with a warehouse full of obsolete equipment they’d like to clear out, to
12 | IMD | Q3 2020
a storage room filled with new automation and industrial electronic parts they no longer have any use for, to entire operations that are closing up shop and need to liquidate their automation assets. We will take inventory of these materials, make a bid, and then channel the results into the appropriate Radwell division, whether that be New or Surplus Parts.
How do you service your customers, and what is your geographic footprint? We have a mix of inside and outside sales representatives, a customer relations team, and a purchasing department that work in tandem to achieve our motto: “One Radwell working together toward a common goal.” This means that, in addition to an employee’s primary function, they are also trained to seek out additional opportunities that might benefit the customer. If they’re picking up a piece of equipment for repair, they might ask if the manufacturer has any new, old, or outdated automation items they’d like to get rid of in order to reclaim wasted space. Then they would share this information with our purchasing department, who would contact the company to discuss making a bid on the excess equipment. So it’s an intricate network that we’ve developed over the years, and a very successful one. I can attest to that myself by pointing out that there were about 50 Radwell employees when I joined the company in 1999, and there are now approximately 1,000 at nine locations around the world in the U.S., the U.K., Canada, and Germany.
IMD – The Industry’s Most Extensive Industrial Publication
When it comes to surplus/ reconditioned equipment, I’m assuming that pretty significant savings can be realized. That’s true, generally along the lines of 60-70 percent over new, in fact. As an example, there was an automotive manufacturer who visited our booth at a tradeshow who had a Mitsubishi Drive that really did a great job for him, but it was somewhat dated and finding parts and repair services was getting increasingly expensive and time-consuming. While he was standing there we were able to determine that we had exactly what he needed in more than one location, and at a price so low that it literally left him speechless. Plus, we could handle repairs from that point forward, while also providing a two-year warranty, as we do on all our repair work and surplus equipment. In addition, we test the equipment we repair – not just components, but the entire system – on stands that our engineers design prior to their return to service. That’s central to our business model: you can come to Radwell, buy new equipment, save money on surplus items, get your old stuff
repaired, and even sell off plant floor equipment you no longer need, all in one place. That’s a huge convenience you’re really not going to find anywhere else. For more information visit www.radwell.com

CNC Job Shops Capitalize On Retrofit Edge Servo Products’ New Orion CNC Retrofit Package Helps Replace or Add Controls On Milling Machines To Optimize Productivity By: Greg Heyen / Servo Products Company
C
NC machining job shops are essentially multi-stage process operations where there is potential for improvement at each stage. Most low-to-mid volume run production machine shops struggle in achieving their share of the 5-10% maximum profit margins typically realized on most jobs. If a machine is down for any significant amount of time, you’ve cut into your production output, increased the cycle time, and you’re losing money. Therefore, if a machine is down, you need to move fast to get your machine back up and running. With the goal of breathing new life into old CNC mills, or turning your mill into a CNC as a cost-effective alternative, SERVO® Products Company (Eastlake, OH), a progressive designer and manufacturer of a broad line of manual knee-type milling machine tools and accessories since 1964, recently introduced their Orion CNC Retrofit package for knee mills and lathes. The CNC Retrofit kits; 1000 M (Milling) and 1000 T (Turning), provide quality upgrades while saving the customer money over purchasing a new machining center. The pre-configured retrofit package is virtually a “plug-and-play” solution that reduces vital machine downtime– for almost any make or model of knee mill. It features a PLC control panel, VFD spindle speed control, true servo motors, ball screws, auto lube pump and runs on single-phase power. End-users can add an optional, LED Work Light, wireless MPG pendant, power drawbar lockout solenoid and dual channel E-Stop for safety, for a complete milling machine package.
ORION RETROFIT ORIGIN / INNOVATION: An ISO 9001: 2015 Certified company, Servo is also family owned and manufacturers in the USA, with a focus on knee mill power feeds and precision drill presses for the medical, aerospace, jewelry industries (amongst others). With an eye on innovation, Servo Engineer, Garry Yaworski, came up with the CNC retrofit kit design as a response to the fact that there were a lot of existing Anilam, Acu-Rite, and other controls in the field that featured obsolete analog systems and failing controls. This also applies to machining centers with failing controls. If an end-user has one of these systems, where support may be nonexistent, the Orion kit is a fast and easy upgrade that can have you up-and-running in hours–not days. According to Yaworski, “The ball screws and brackets are already in place on these systems, so you’d just need a new control and motors. The idea was to supply an ‘octopus’ style control box, with all of the cables and attachment pieces, that the user could install on
14 | IMD | Q3 2020
an existing knee mill in the shop. Preconfigured, you’d simply bolt it to the existing machine and connect all the motors. This system can also be used to update a CNC machining center.” Servo’s Orion quickly turns a manual knee mill into to a full-blown 3-or-4-axis CNC, and is adaptable to multiple manufacturers. Packaged as a three-axis kit for milling machines, it is also easily upgradeable and pre-wired for a fourth axis. Importantly, the third axis can drive the knee so you have a full 16” of travel up/ down, or SERVO recently acquired Elrod Manufacturing (Flagstaff, AZ) to offer the ball screw driven quill kits. Notably, the retrofit system is as simple as installing power feeds, with the servo motors built in, therefore a very easy installation– typically within a day which reduces costs and downtime. The 400W true servo motors provide up to 300 in/lbs of torque and a maximum rapid travel speed of 105 IPM. Servo also offers the Elrod belt-and-pulley style systems. Both systems operate on 208-240V single-phase power, which is ideal for small- to-mid sizes job/home shops that don’t have three-phase power. The turnkey retrofit solution features an integrated frequency drive that controls the spindle speed. It also includes an I/O board, MPG pendant, ball screws, auto lube pump, and spindle and feed rate overrides. It is a complete turnkey system, not an à la carte system, like many retrofit systems on the market–where the spindle control alone could add significant costs. The prewired system is delivered ready to install, and comes with a detailed manual and unparalleled in-house tech support. Once installed, end-users can expect many years of service and is priced significantly below competitors retrofit packages.

Ultimately, for today’s machining job shop sector, being better and faster keeps costs lower while raising the bar on potential profits. The ability to avoid downtime by quickly adopting new machine tool technologies like Servo’s Orion Retrofit Kit, becomes paramount to the overall success equation. According to Servo President, Greg Heyen, “Orion has been on the market for approximately three years and more shops are taking advantage of its quick retrofit/upgrade capabilities, advanced technology milling package, and great price point–typically 5-10K lower than the competition. In fact, one of our clients recently switched over from another manufacturer and is now installing about twenty Orion retrofit kits per year.” Heyen also noted that Servo can custom tailor their CNC packages to fit specific machine requirements, whether it’s a new installation or a retrofit replacement for an old unreliable control. Solutions for most any milling, turning, or grinding applications are also supported by Servo’s partner company/distributor High Quality Tools® (Eastlake, OH / Largo, FL), which is a one-stop retail supplier of replacement parts, tools, and accessories for vertical knee-type milling machines. Servo also has a network of approximately 250 dealers throughout the U.S.A.

Manufacturing in the Age of COVID-19
D
uring uncertain times, humans turn to stories. We look for reassurance, for inspiration, and for a sense of community; to know we’re not alone in our experience and to understand how others are coping. With that in mind, Universal Robots has launched a series of blog posts to share the stories of manufacturers around the world who are figuring out how to address the COVID-19 pandemic; to keep employees safe and their businesses viable. Universal Robot’s hope is that we can all continue to collaborate—from a safe distance—to care for and learn from each other. RCM Industries is a manufacturer of die casting parts with four production plants in the Chicago area. The company’s director of sales and marketing, Mike Higgins, spoke with Universal Robots about how RCM is managing the COVID-19 crisis.
Tell Us How You Run Your Production Today Versus Before The Pandemic. All our four plants have been substantially impacted by the pandemic—our operations are down 50-80 percent right now.
18 | IMD | Q3 2020
Fortunately, several of our customers that we manufacture parts for are for products deemed “essential,” such as parts for the medical, military and automotive industries, so as far as keeping some workers employed, we are still better off than many other businesses in our area that had to shut down completely.
How are you protecting your employees? What types of PPE are they wearing (if deemed necessary)? Did you have to restructure your production line to minimize contagion risks? We’re basically running a skeleton crew on-site at our plants right now. Everybody that can work from home is doing so. All on-site personnel wear masks and gloves and/or use hand sanitizers. We actually did have a COVID-19 case in one of our plants that we immediately shut down for a week. During that time, we had a professional company come in and completely sanitize the place before we had our employees report back to work. Early on, we laid out very clear policies on what to do should this happen. These policies were shared with our suppliers, our employees, and our customers, so when it happened, we were prepared and followed

through with what we had said we would do. I think this really helped all stakeholders. Our UR cobots are deployed in two identical cells where they each tend two dual-spindle CNC lathes in the same cycle. In terms of following the social distancing guidelines, this has also proven very effective as we only need one roving inspector to oversee the operation of these cells now.
How do you communicate necessary production changes to your workforce? It’s very difficult to tell employees that we are laying them off, and that we do not know when we will be able to have them come back. We’re closely following the updates and guidelines from federal, state, local governments in terms of the stay-at-home directives. Even when those lift, we will not know for sure if our orders will be back up to where they were, with the global economy slowing down. There’s a lot of angst, of course, and we’ve let all our workers know to please keep in touch during this challenging time that we’re all going through.
How has your supply chain been impacted? We source our raw material and most other supporting supplies domestically so we have not had any issues with any of our raw material having to cross borders, etc. We have definitely come to appreciate our short supply chain right now. The only issues I could foresee here is if we have one of our CNC machines or other equipment break down and then having to rely on maybe
having parts shipped from overseas—which we fortunately have not experienced.
Are you relying more on automation now than before? Or, is automation helping you in new and unexpected ways? In times like these, our automated cells have really been beneficial. The crew that we kept on staff had a broader skillset and were not familiar with the direct operation of the collaborative robots, but since the day-to-day operation of the cobots is fairly easy to learn, handle and monitor, this has not been an issue.
How do you make sure your products reach the end customers on time? By implementing automation, we were able to compete with lower-wage countries when bidding on orders for customers here in our home state. Being close to our customers is definitely more important now than ever—as a result we have not had any delays in getting our products out. As our customers start making new decisions on future orders, I believe that choosing local suppliers is going to matter even more.
How do you think this crisis will shape your company going forward? What are some of the lessons learned? I think we will definitely evaluate restructuring some of our work spaces. We have to look closely at how we can maximize utilization of our floor space while still ensuring the wellbeing of our employees.

Social distancing might become the new normal, and we have to be prepared for that in the long run as well. Due to the plant layout, many of our employees are already spread apart from each other, and we also already have established practices such as wearing masks, distancing personnel in common areas, dedicated personnel to wipe down key contact points in the facilities, multiple shifts, staggered lunchbreaks, and the use of automation. Other options may include, for example, more of our personnel working from home more often. What has definitely helped us was addressing the challenges head on at an early stage and preparing for the worst. When this actually does happen then, such as the COVID case at our plant, we had policies in place and were not scrambling.

Process
Tube Machining with Short Cycle Times
O
perations for the prep on tubing and pipes generally require multiple manufacturing steps such as cutting, chamfering, face-off, turning and tapping including thread milling or thread forming. Higher part quantities are usually combined with the need for different manufacturing steps demand efficient and time saving production methods to help reduce time and cost. Special purpose machines such as rotary and linear transfer machines, offer the best solutions to help obtain shorter overall part cycle times. An extensive background of experience with operations on transfer machines allows SUHNER to optimize a manufacturing process with standard or custom solutions for each machining application. One specific application is for large and long OD threads. These operations are extremely difficult and challenging for manufacturers, when trying to obtain shorter cycle times, simply because an OD threading operation by itself will dictate the overall machine cycle time. SUHNER, in cooperation with WAGNER, a German manufacturer for OD thread rolling heads, has developed a special process, which allows threading operations in very short cycle times. A pneumatic cylinder-activated system is used to open and close the thread rolling head, which is equipped with multiple thread cutting or forming inserts. The work piece is fed from bar stock material. After a cut to length operation, it is machined by three Suhner BEX15 machining units with special Weldon tool holders. Operations include OD & ID and face turning. All units are equipped with a 1.5kW motor and high precision angular contact spindle bearings. The most interesting station on this machine is the one for an OD threading operation, which is accomplished with a BEX35-ISO40 machining unit equipped with a WAGNER thread rolling head type Z27-2. In this operation, the thread rolling head is rotating and the work piece is stationary. The feed motion for this station is done with a CNC slide unit. In order to synchronize the thread pitch, both the BEX35 spindle and CNC slide are servo motor driven. As soon as the threading operation is finished, the WAGNER thread rolling head with integrated inserts opens quickly to allow a fast return to the home position. Opening and closing action of the head is accomplished by an internal BEX35 drawbar, controlled by a three-position pneumatic cylinder. This pneumatic cylinder is designed to make an additional stroke of 10mm. This allows for head and insert adjustments or replacements, depending on thread size. Depending on length, a typical OD thread rolling cycle time ranges between six to ten seconds. Illustrated work pieces are
22 | IMD | Q3 2020
steel tubings as used in the HVAC product industry. There are eight part variations, each with a different thread size, pitch and length requirement. Thanks to the application of CNC servo driven spindle and slide components, customers can achieve very short changeover time, as well.
The Thread Rolls The rolling thread is the actual forming tool. The rolling profile is worked in as a parallel peripheral chamfer. Thus, having the same flank lead, various thread diameters either left-hand or right-hand threads can be rolled with the same machine setup. Needle bearings or carbide nuts bear the threads. To tackle the numerous tasks involved, various types and qualities of rolls are available.
The Roll Holders They support the thread rolls and fit at the inside of the cam ring. They differ according to the range of diameters and the worked-in lead angles of the thread to roll. Few roll holder sets cover the whole work range of a thread rolling head. It is very easy to replace the roll holders for regularand fine threads, trapezoid and special threads, plus right-hand and left-hand threads.
The Thread Rolling Head It supports the roll holders, opens up after the thread rolling and
can be positioned precisely according to the rolling diameter. Constructing the proper head is relatively easy. It facilitates controlling the energies of cold forming. The size, accuracy and permanent operation of the rolled threads even with workpieces up to maximum 1700 N/mm2 of tensile strength is therefore guaranteed.
The Shank As the connecting element to the machine, the shank isn‘t fitted with operational elements of the rolling head mechanism. Thus, it can be replaced very easily by thread connections. Various kinds of shanks for almost every tool fitting of the different kinds of machines are generally available. Additionally, the shank serves as a die of a stop, should it be needed.
The axial head is closed by radially turning the locking lever or locking roll or by an automatic locking device. The head’s opening mechanism will be activated when the feeding stops and the rolls will release the workpiece. Maximum productivity can be realized by the use of high precision thread rolls, which are held in place by the roll holders. These can be optimized to match the required pitch, diameter and shape of the rolling thread. The thread roll is the ultimate shaping tool in which the profile that has to be rolled is machined as a parallel circumferential groove. For more information:

The Highly Flexible System
Mr. Lee Coleman, Division Manager
The axially working WAGNER® thread rolling head rolls the superior finish threads in a large working area. The large working area of the various rolling head models is made possible by the fast and easy exchange capabilities of the roll holders. They differ in the size of the working area and the holder angle. This ensures that the threads with different profile shapes can be machined with left-hand or right-hand threads using the same head. Other shaping work such as beading, knurling, rolling-in and smoothing can also be achieved. The heads are suitable for rotating or stationary use.

Doing More With Multitasking Machines Multi-purpose equipment helps small-medium enterprises close the skills gap
A
2018 Skills Gap In Manufacturing study by Deloitte and the Manufacturing Institute states that 4.6 million jobs need to be filled over the next decade, while 2.4 million might remain open due to a lack of trained workers. As the engineering skills gap weighs heavily on industry, small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) manufacturers must find ways to do more with fewer resources. Here, Claudia Jarrett, US country manager of parts supplier EU Automation, explains how multitasking machines can help fill the skills gap. For manufacturers, the notion of doing more with less can imply a need to increase production, without investing large amounts of money. Couple this with a shortage of skilled engineers entering industry, and it becomes clear that SME manufacturers need to reevaluate their production lines if they are to remain competitive
26 | IMD | Q3 2020
while also maintaining a high production output. SME manufacturers are no strangers to tight financial constraints and limited resources. This is why the notion of switching up the production line may seem like a daunting and expensive option — but it doesn’t have to be. Instead of investing heavily in extra machinery, an SME manufacturer might instead consider combining its operations into a single machine capable of multiple tasks.
Multitasking Machinery What is a multitasking machine? As the name suggests, it’s a single machine that performs multiple operations. For manufacturers that are struggling to find engineers with the right skills, multitasking equipment allows them to instead rely upon machinery for a sustained, or even increased, production output. In other words,
The Future of Manufacturing in the United States Depends on Us to CHANGE: • How we view the Art of Manufacturing. • How we view the return on the prototypical college education. • How to contend with student loan debt. • Our country’s place in making the world’s products. • How we view workers who consider themselves craftsmen – “makers”. • How we view American-made products. • How we mentor our next generation youth.
Change How American Manufacturing’s Perceived In Our Nation. Finding America’s Greatest Champion Authored by Terry Iverson, President of Iverson & Company and Founder of ChampionNow! Available Now at: https://championnow.org/book/
www.championnow.org • Twitter @Championnow • terry@championnow.org
they can do more with less, with one piece of equipment. Recent innovations in multitasking equipment include Mazak’s Integrex i-series machining center. In addition to a main turning spindle and tilt milling spindle, the machine has a second turning spindle and a lower-tool turret, combined into what the manufacturer calls a “done-in-one” machine. The center is designed for greater workpiece capacity than any other multi-tasking machines in its size range. One machine shop, which purchased 12 of the machines, reported that it was able to achieve the same output as would otherwise have been possible with 30 individual, single-process machines. And, it was able to do so with a lower machine footprint. Reducing the floorspace occupied by plant equipment is a growing priority for manufacturers. Because a multitasking machine can replace several devices, for an SME, the machine not only frees-up space but can also increase production capacity without overstretching a company’s manufacturing budget.
28 | IMD | Q3 2020
In addition, without the usual machine-to-machine procedures, human workers are saved the burden of moving to and from each machine. Operators can take on a wider range of jobs, and even expand their operations.
Quality Assured Manufacturers should always strike the balance between faster, larger-scale production and quality. Making alternations to production, while also sustaining high quality and short lead times, is not an easy task — particularly for SMEs. This situation was encountered by Precision Swiss Products (PSP), a company that produces complex components for the medical and aerospace industries. PSP decided to take on an ambitious, high-volume job that entailed manufacturing a non-conventional medical part. The company opted for a multitasking machine to boost and switch-up its production, specifically the Nakamura AS-200, a high-performance sub spindle turning center that is designed for its flexible turning capabilities. The company seamlessly transitioned from small batch production to
high-volume as the AS-200 ran for approximately 20 hours a day, including lights-out production, while consistently producing high-tolerance, quality parts. The success of the machine has allowed PSP to deal with higher-volume work. In fact, the company has been so impressed that it plans to expand its production to accommodate increased manufacturing and assembly demands.

With any new machine, manufacturers must justify their investment. In the case of PSP, the company broke even within six and a half months thanks to its investment in the Nakamura AS-200. This quick financial turnaround could be attributed to several factors. With only one machine in operation, production lead times can be cut, part costs reduced and fewer workers are required. And, with less people on the shop, floor productivity levels can be achieved within fewer shifts. These advantages could also be crucial for closing the skills gap, by making it unnecessary to source and recruit hard-to-find machinists to run numerous machines. At the same time, manufacturers can maintain continuous and unattended operations. However, with a greater reliance on machinery, manufacturers must ensure that these machines operate smoothly and not cause downtime. Obsolete automation parts suppliers, such as EU Automation, can help manufacturers source the necessary parts and supply them in quick turnaround, to prevent financial losses. Even though the engineering skills gap continues to weigh heavily on industry, SME manufacturers can, in fact, utilize new technologies to do more with less resources. Not only can multitasking machines help to fill the skills void, they can increase efficiency, reap financial benefits and even facilitate growth.
