Monthly Leasing & Finance Index Up 13% Over 2014 The Equipment Leasing and Finance Association’s (ELFA) Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25), which reports economic activity from 25 companies representing a cross section of the $903 billion equipment finance sector, showed their overall new business volume for February was $6.1 billion, up 13 percent from new business volume in February 2014. Volume was down 9 percent from January. Year to date, cumulative new business volume increased 12 percent compared to 2014. Brian Holland, President and CFO, Fleet Advantage, LLC, said, “The results of the MLFI report and increase in year-over-year new business volume are reflective of our results and what we are seeing in the market... We continue to see increased optimism and confidence in this sector and maintain a positive outlook for 2015.” Separately, the Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation’s Monthly Confidence Index (MCI-EFI) for March is 72.1, an increase from the February index of 66.3 and the highest level in four years. TRUMPF Names New Managing Director for Canada Effective April 1, 2015, Stefan Fickenscher will become Managing Director of TRUMPF Canada. He succeeds Stefan Schreiber who returns to TRUMPF GmbH + Co. KG in Ditzingen, Germany as head of central sales subsidiaries in the machine tool division. Fickenscher joined TRUMPF GmbH + Co. KG in 2002 as International Project Manager, 2D lasers. He held two additional positions in Germany before transferring to TRUMPF Inc. in Farmington, CT in 2011. He joined TRUMPF Inc. as Product Manager, TruLaser product group and became responsible for the sales of 2D laser machines across North America. In his new role as Managing Director, Fickenscher will be responsible for the day to day operations in Canada, including sales, service and spare parts at the subsidiary’s new location in Mississauga, Ontario. EMO 2015 Expected to draw 150,000 visitors to Milan in October EMO 2015 will be held at the FieraMilano exhibition grounds in Milan, Italy. The six-day manufacturing show will draw 1,600 exhibitors, 150,000 visitors, representing over 100 countries and span more than 120,000 square meters of exhibition space. Alternately hosted by Italy and Germany, EMO is the main exhibition for the international operators of the manufacturing industry, who will meet in Milan next autumn, coming from all over the world for a six-day, fullimmersion event among the novelties proposed by the major worldwide players. In the halls of FieraMilano Rho-Pero the largest factory in the world will be set up. There will be a wide range of products on display: machine tools, robots, automation, additive manufacturing, mechatronic solutions and auxiliary technologies. Excitement is high in anticipation of the event. With the manufacturing industry on the rise after a prolonged recession, exhibitors are expected to pull out all the stops. With China alone expected to draw 45% of machine tools sales as early as 2018, catering to Asian clients will be high on the priority lists of the event-holders and exhibitors. Haldor Topsoe and Ferrostaal to form joint venture Ferrostaal GmbH, a global project developer for industrial plants, and Haldor Topsoe A/S, developer of catalysis and related process technologies, today announced the establishment of Ferrostaal Topsoe Projects GmbH, a new joint venture that will be based in Essen and owned with equal shares by the two companies. GF Machining Solutions Names New Head of Americas Region GF Machining Solutions has appointed Scott Fosdick as its new Head of Market Region Americas. Previously the company’s Segment Manager for Aerospace and Automotive Asia, U.S.-born Fosdick takes over for former region president Glynn Fletcher. Fosdick holds a degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Colorado. He started his career in Japan as a development engineer for a Japanese machine tool company. Fosdick joined GF Machining Solutions, previously known as Agie Charmilles, in 1994. He successfully worked for technical service in Japan before taking over the position of Service Manager for Asia. Not Just for the Enterprise Giants Any More

I

t is not news that the manufacturing landscape in North America has changed drastically in the past decade. It is also not news that, despite increased global pressures, many American manufacturers continue to remain competitive from both a productivity and cost efficiency standpoint. In fact, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the U.S. manufacturing sector’s contribution to the GDP grew by almost $2.5T (12%) from 2009 to 2014. A large majority of this increased contribution comes from small- to mid-sized businesses (SMBs). Since most SMB manufacturers do not have the luxury of reacting to marketplace changes slowly, automation is their close ally. Shop floor automation helps manufacturers not only do more with less, but it also bridges the gap between enterprise planning and plant floor activities. This extra mile of efficiency provides an important competitive advantage.

The Automation Spectrum Shop floor automation has drastically improved in recent years. Now, a wide range of enterprise solutions are available to fit the specific needs of the manufacturer from both a functionality and a device compatibility perspective. Solution offerings range from the basic ability to track operational data

to state of the art Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) that provide advanced shop floor automation for highly complex products. Very often the actual automation requirements for SMB manufacturers are somewhere between these two extremes. Here are three broad groups of automation levels that manufacturers should consider: 1. Getting Started: Direct labor and material costs are two of the biggest operational cost centers for any manufacturer. A manufacturer cannot achieve operational efficiency without understanding, tracking and controlling these costs. At the very least, an automation solution should provide the ability for plant operators to access the right information at the right time to increase productivity. If the plant floor operators are constantly looking for updated job packets, or if supervisors lack clear visibility into team activities productivity will be seriously impacted. In order to take the first step, mangers should consider shop floor automation solutions that will help speed operations, remove road blocks and better manage resources. These solutions will start reducing dependencies on inflexible and opaque processes, such as paper based manufacturing. Automated processes which operate in real-time and can be updated instantly help manufacturers

2. Advanced Automation: The next level of shop floor solutions allow manufacturers to automate and streamline a wide variety of manufacturing processes. Event triggers and workflows can be created so that next steps in the production cycle are assigned automatically, eliminating the need for someone to make a decision and take action. For example, using advanced automation companies can track quality metrics throughout the production process from incoming raw materials and Work In Progress (WIP) all the way to job receipts. Tracking abilities can also handle multi-level serial number hierarchies (end item, sub-assemblies, parts etc.), tracking material consumption, scrap rates and machine run rates, among other things. Complete Integrated Manufacturing: The next level of plant floor process improvement brings a fully automated manufacturing environment with the ability to collect machine information, plus create production schedule workflows. This is done based on input from various other systems, such as ERP, MES and asset management systems. The process is fairly involved and requires executive level involvement and endorsement from various teams (finance, operations, maintenance, HR, IT etc.) to be successful. Organizations considering moving in this direction will need some level of basic plant floor automation to build upon. Many implementation experts recommend using a phased approach.

In order to remain competitive in today’s market, it is important for organizations to continually evaluate their current processes and look for opportunities for improvement. Knowing where to start can be overwhelming. These considerations can be helpful to keep in mind when mapping out the automation strategy: 1. Non-intrusive systems (especially for SMB manufacturers): SMB manufacturers often prefer solutions that cause minimal disruption to the daily routine. SMBs simply cannot afford down time or risk disruptions to customer deliveries. This means that the automation solution should be easy to deploy, easy to train employees to use and nonintrusive to the existing IT infrastructure. 2. Systems that fit the manufacturing requirements: It is important to avoid extensive customizations in to achieve the desired functionality. Customizations are inflexible and usually do not grow and scale with other enterprise systems. 3. Device independence and the ability to leverage modern technology: When reviewing automation options, keep in mind that it is important to deploy a solution that is highly flexible and will allow for future expansion and enhancements. Modern automation solutions are built on the latest technology and can be deployed across a variety of industrial and consumer based devices. They sport a fresh, intuitive user experience to allow operators access to information in an easy and efficient manner. Following these guidelines will allow manufacturers to review their current strategies and determine what type of shop floor automation best matches their objectives. Whether beginning with a system to manage labor and scheduling or opting for fully integrated systems which can manage their entire planning and production processes, manufacturers will appreciate the convenience, cost efficiencies and improved use of resources that come with automation. It’s undeniable that automation is an important element of remaining competitive today.

ccording to analysis by the international trade experts at Germany Trade and Invest (GTAI), US and Canadian industry will focus on high-tech machine tools in the coming years with flexible, largely automated and energy efficient manufacturing systems that provide a viable alternative to Asian competition in demand. EMAG’s solution to these challenges is their patented pick-up technology machining concept, developed and tailor-made for the North American market. quality. Multi-layer manufacturing systems, for instance, frequently use robots or complex gripper systems to link individual machines. It is not uncommon that the flow of workpieces in these systems is difficult to control and, therefore, liable to interruptions. Of course, system availability always suffers where there are stoppages. „We are doing it a different way. The whole production process is stable and error-free, since the pick-up technology ensures that these parts of the usual automation system are superfluous, even in multi-layer manufacturing systems,” says Loetzner. The workpiece is transported between machines on conveyor belts or shuttle systems located behind the machining area. Simple automation modules also pick up the workpieces from the conveyor belt and insert them into the carrier prisms of the individual machines. The rest of the work is done by the work spindle. Thus, the amount of automation can be reduced 15 to 30 percent compared to other solutions, while the tailor-made machine design ensures a safe production process. “Machine availability is very high,” adds Loetzner. Efficiency is achieved through short travel distances between the compact pick-up machines. This ensures component throughput times are minimised and high output rates are achieved. Loetzner confirms, “We have had a good analysis of other concepts on the market. Complex, interlinked solutions, in particular, have a lower output rate than our manufacturing systems with pick-up machines.”

Manual Loading Pick-up Solutions The strengths of EMAG automation applies not

only to multi-layer production lines, but also with stand-alone machines, on which highly flexible production processes can be implemented. In these cases, the operator inserts chucked components manually into the carrier prisms that transport them to the pick-up station. The operator also removes the finish-machined components from their carrier prisms. Production companies may think it simpler to carry out this process on a manually loaded horizontal lathe than a partially automated vertical turning machine. “If you look closer, you will find that the opposite is true,” explains Loetzner, “Especially when considering the OEE factor of component quality, loading the machine manually involves risks that can lead to clamping errors. In the automotive sector, particularly, one µm often determines component quality. In the case of the horizontal machine, too much depends on the operator’s capability.” Thus, the pick-up concept provides the best solution to clamp and machine workpieces with great accuracy. Measuring systems can also be incorporated and used to monitor quality, reducing the possibility of errors to an absolute minimum.

Ready for the Future Last, but by no means least, are the important role technical developments play in the effectiveness of a machine. Many transmission and engine components, for example, have changed enormously over the years and have tended to decrease in size, while their geometry becomes more complex. Despite this, all the relevant production processes must be, and remain, highly productive. “The ’future-factor’ is often underestimated. When a new machine slows down after a few years and can no longer be adapted to changing conditions, it has a negative influence on its overall effectiveness,” emphasises Loetzner. The flexibility of their machines is of great importance to EMAG, where a modular design is used to configure every single machine to suit a particular task. Every operation, as well as the extent of its automation, can be changed as required. This ensures that the system can be adjusted to increasing batch sizes or changing component specifications. In the face of rapidly accelerating technological changes in many sectors, EMAG machine builders see an encouraging market. “Developments are meeting us halfway, so to speak,” Loetzner suggests. “We are in a position to offer a pickup solution that is tailor-made to the customer’s requirements for every turned part. The effectiveness of the system is higher than other comparable automation technology solutions. This is the kind of quality that wins.”

emanufactured three-stage lathe line with Sinumerik 840D sl CNC provides dynamic solution for railroad axle manufacturer Euro Machinery Specialists (Menomonee Falls, WI) recently remanufactured a 1960s vintage Snyder “Three-Stage” lathe machining line for its customer, Standard Forged Products (McKees Rocks, PA), for use in the production of rail and locomotive axles. Owing to the change from hydraulic tracer to advanced CNC control, DC headstock to synchronized AC drive and hydraulic

to AC axes servo motion, the production of steel billets into hammer forged finished axles was substantially improved for the end user. According to Euro vice president Karl Engelke, “Standard Forged Products was looking for a significant productivity increase to bring the “Three Stage” system back to OEM level cycle times, due to punishment from many years of heavyduty machining around the clock. Peak operating performance was originally about a four-minute cycle time for a completely machined axle, start


to finish. Over the years, cycle times dwindled and, when we received the project, cycle time was over seven minutes per axle, due to numerous mechanical and electrical problems and failures — therefore, this Snyder line was in need of a total overhaul and remanufacture. Our overall threeyear contract with Standard Forged Products for this project required complete rebuilding from the ground up. Since the old iron was extremely sound, it was an ideal candidate for remanufacture, including everything from the key motion control package, consisting of three Siemens Sinumerik CNCs, Simotics motors and Sinamics drives at each lathe, plus Simatic PLC and HMI as the master of the entire line.” He noted that on all three machines, 4-inch diameter ballscrews and bearing blocks capable of over 44,000 lbs. of thrust were designed to replace the original hydraulic cylinders. The line required complete rebuilding of all headstocks and hydraulic chucks, replacement of most gears, shafts and Timken bearings. All new hydraulic and lubrication systems were designed and integrated. Other improvements of note were double way wiper systems and special sheet metal guarding to protect the operators and machine components from the heavy chips. In total, the entire project required over 11,000 man-hours of work. In addition to the remanufacture of the three lathes, Euro re-engineered and provided an entirely new overhead gantry workpiece shuttle system. This massive automated system, having been converted from hydraulic to servo operation, performs barcode scanning and moves the initial raw forged axles into the roughing lathe “Stage One” position for left and right journal section machining. Then, it transfers the workpieces in sequence to the next two machining stages for center-section roughing “Stage Two” and finish cut “Stage Three” — finally transferring and offloading the completed workpieces to the holding area. The turning line synchronizes left-head and right-head 150 hp Simotics M-1PH8 motors for

both Stage One and Stage Two roughing lathes. The rough cut is, according to Engelke, “perhaps the most aggressive and impressive cutting operation in the machine tool industry today.” On each tool block, multiple large diameter button nose cutting tools with high carbide content plunge into the forging at a minimum ½-inch depth of cut at approximately 0.200 inch-per-revolution. The high carbon tool allows for extremely high tool pressure and resists high temperature which puts the heat into the chip, not into the cutting tool. Standard Forged Products has the cutting formula down to a science — however, the challenge was to optimize the process even further, thanks to the incredible power and torque from the headstock motors and newly designed large ballscrews, gear reduction and servomotors versus the old hydraulics systems. Since the axle is hammerforged, the surface is extremely difficult to break and machine with any consistency; therefore, tool stability and extremely rigid machine components are absolutely critical to the integrity of the process. In Stage Two, the center section of the axle is machined with an overall first finish pass made. Stage Three involves the final finish pass with a single headstock 75 hp Simotics M-1PH8 motor driving the workpiece. In operation, while the customer spec for the axle surface finish is 250 RMS, the line is currently holding 124 RMS consistently, Engelke

noted. Every workpiece in process is subject to form gage and profilometer readers for accuracy. As an interesting sidebar, two semi-trailers full of chips are produced by this line, every day. Each stage’s motion control is run by a Sinumerik 840D sl CNC, the Siemens flagship controller. An HT2 handheld unit is provided at each station for easy setup and commissioning. Dual-channel (X, Z and U, W) cutting paths in Stage One necessitated the higher level CNC for motion control accuracy, according to Cary Ramthun, CNC programmer and controls engineer at Euro. He detailed the additional challenges of the line control rebuild and the solution. “We were challenged by the large amounts of power and torque required to perform this machining operation in each of the three stages, plus the overhead gantry system and other materials handling devices all required precise integration. We worked with Tom Threinen and his team at Siemens to achieve the entire motion control and automation package. The movements are seamless and completely safe for both the customer’s operators and every component of the machine stages.” Ramthun further noted, “Siemens programmers worked with us and Standard Forged Products programmers to accomplish the final solution on this project.” He mentioned the unique adaptive control feature on the Siemens CNC, which

The result was a better-than-new production line for our customer, which came about through the use of new modern motion control and CNC technologies, diverse talents cooperating together and a good deal of old-fashioned American ingenuity.

accommodates the out-of-roundness condition often found on hammer forgings. The Profinet coupler provided with the Sinumerik 840D sl syncs the gantry and the machine stages in a series of “handshakes” with no hard-wiring, only sub-network connections are required, plus full isolation of the networks. Engelke detailed the engineering required for the project presented considerable challenges, as well. “We were working with 1960s machinery built by a Snyder company that’s no longer in business. We literally started by reverse engineering each individual machine component in our CAD system. Doing so allowed us to design, engineer and adapt new modern mechanical and servo driven solutions as well as provide the customer with complete, highly detailed machine documentation such as manuals with assembly drawings, spare parts lists, hydraulic, lubrication and electrical system schematics. M

any shops increasingly incorporate full 5-axis multi-tasking machine tool technology because it allows them to handle basically any kind of part that comes through the door and do so with one type of machine in single setups to increase productivity. But rarely, if ever, do these shops realize that large spiral bevel gear sets are also among that wide mix of part-processing capability. With a larger sized 5-axis multi-tasking vertical machining center, for instance, shops can costeffectively and quickly produce those occasional, low-volume spiral bevel gear sets in-house. Thus, a shop can avoid the long turnaround times associated with farming the job out to a specialty gear shop. These specialty gear makers are few and far between because only a small amount of them have the equipment big enough to do the job, and if they do, that equipment is always at full capacity and heavily backlogged. Additionally, big gear sets, those involving ring gear pitch diameters over 3.5’, processed on a multi-tasking machine require minimal matching sequences, if any at all. Special 3D software that creates the 3D model of the gear teeth makes this possible. With a gear’s geometry data, the software automatically generates the geometries required for the mating gear and the contact pattern. The model with the proper contact pattern is then loaded into a CAM system that allows the gears to be programmed the same as any other 5-axis

part. And from this point forward, the machine tool simply cuts to the model. So, a properly designed model together with a well-maintained machine tool will generate consistently accurate gear sets. A multi-tasking, 5-axis machine tool can cut both ring and pinion gears so accurately and consistently that a shop could, for instance, separately cut five pinion gears and five ring gears. It could then pair the gears up with one another in no particular order to create five gear sets. Plus, when not machining the occasional gear sets, a shop can use its multi-tasking machine to cut all of its other parts, including the gear boxes the sets go into and any other associated transmission components, to maximize machine spindle utilization. It is this production flexibility that attracts shops to multi-tasking machines. In process-development testing, Mazak machined a spiral bevel gear set that included a 29-tooth, 22�-diameter pinion gear and a 114-tooth, 6-ft-diameter ring gear on a Mazak INTEGREX e-1550V/10 Multi-Tasking 5-axis Machining Center. This gear set was completed in days as opposed to months. The set was also machined complete using only one machine. The INTEGREX e-1550V/10 is a standard model with a two-pallet changer. The machine performs all required machining processes such as milling, turning, boring drilling and tapping. Profile operations. The machine’s Mazatrol Matrix 2 CNC Control provides fast, small-increment processing for high accuracy 5-axis simultaneous machining and superior part surface finishes. Also for development testing, Mazak used no special tools to machine the ring and pinion. All tools were standard, off-the-shelf and readily available. As a standard model, the INTEGREX e-1550V/10 provides the power and torque needed to machine the gear sets. The machine has a 10,000-rpm, 50-hp spindle with B-axis travel of -30 to +120 degrees. The machine’s 50-hp, 300-rpm turning spindle rotates 360 degrees in the C- axis at 0.0001-degree minimum increments. The machine’s round 55.1”-diameter face plate pallets with four jaws support maximum loads of 11,000 lbs. The pallets accommodate workpieces measuring up to 78.7” in diameter and 52.9” high. For minimizing non-cut time, the machine rapid traverses at a maximum speed of 1,653 ipm in the X, Y and Z axes. A standard 40-tool magazine provides ample storage to support continuous machine operations. Pinion gears for the sets are machined from solid cylindrical pieces of 8620 steel, while the ring gears are machined from forged 4340 carbon steel rings that have about 0.250” of additional stock for machining, but lack any near-net teeth shapes. Both gears are first rough machined in their non-hardened states, then pinion teeth are carburized to 62 Rc, ring gear teeth induction hardened to 55 Rc and both are finish machined in hard milling operations on the Mazak machine. For this particular gear set’s machining operations, a pinion gear is fixtured on one of the multi-tasking machine’s two pallets and a ring gear on the other. While one gear is being machined, a machinist sets up the other at the pallet load station. While this capability is not critical to gear set machining operations on a multi-tasking machine, it does however, increase spindle utilization and machine output for other jobs. After it is rough machined, the pinion gear moves out of the work envelope, and the ring gear on the second pallet moves in for its rough machining. A shop would then send out both rough-machined gears for their hardening processes. With its teeth hardened, the pinion gear is re-located back onto the pallet fixturing, and the

machine finish cuts the gear’s bore as well as hardmills the flanks and edge radii of its teeth to eliminate any secondary deburring operations. All the operations are done in the same setup to ensure the gear’s features run true with one another. Likewise, the ring gear is re-fixtured and moves into the machine where its bore is finish cut and all of its gear teeth, including radii, are hardmilled to finish size. If the gears had been produced using traditional methods, shops would match test them as sets at this stage of production. The drawback to these exclusively matched sets, however, is that pinion gears, simply because they rotate more, tend to wear quicker than do ring gears. When this happens, shops will make a whole new set, even though the ring gear may have additional working life left. They produce a new set because the odds of generating another pinion gear that will roll perfectly matched to the existing ring gear’s pattern are extremely low. However, many gear specialty shops continue to try and accomplish this almost impossible task using reverse engineering. Of all the challenges involved with machining gear sets, imparting the correct involute form on the pinion gear is the most daunting, and in machining, Mazak uses several proprietary techniques to minimize close out error. In doing so, the company is able to determine the minimal amount of stock to leave on the pinion gear to correct for warping from the heat treating process, yet also leave enough stock to fulfill the case hardened depth requirement. Removing too much material during the finish machining operation can compromise the gear’s case hardened depth, thus affecting the gear’s operation and its working life. While multi-tasking machines can generate consistently precise matched large spiral bevel gear sets, the process is also dependent on a well-maintained machine tool. Worn and out of tolerance machines will be unable to drive consistently precise 5-axis toolpaths, which is key to accurate gear set machining, as well as any other 5-axis machining application for that matter. Machines must be reliable, square and deliver repeatable motion. As the shortage of capacity and long delivery times for large bevel gear sets continue, those shops that lack the volumes to justify the purchase of a big gear cutting machine will look to multitasking machines as a viable option for producing the occasional gear set. With a standard, full 5-axis multi-tasking machine, shops can cost effectively process all of their larger, low-volume parts, including the occasional spiral bevel gear sets.

The Future Looks Bright for U.S. Midsized Industrial Manufacturers

P

rime Advantage, the leading buying consortium for midsized manufacturers, announced the findings of its seventh edition of the Group CFO Survey, revealing the financial projections and top economic concerns of industrial manufacturing companies. The results show continued optimism in the economy and positive growth expectations in several industries as Prime Advantage Members focus on strengthening their organizations for the future.

Summary of Findings • Members are keeping a spotlight on the coming years with 67 percent working on new products and services, while 44 percent are increasing their R&D efforts in 2015. • Ninety-three percent of financial executives are expecting their industry to grow or remain constant in 2015. This figure, while still robust, is a slight drop from 2014. • The focus of capital expenditures in 2015 is heavily weighted towards equipment, with 96 percent of member companies looking to invest in this area. This is a 10 point jump from 2014. • The impact of rising healthcare costs has created a new initiative to implement preventative healthcare programs at many midsized manufacturers. Fifty-five percent of Member companies are taking this preemptive measure, up from 39 percent last year. • As the fiscal landscape worsens in the EU, concerns over U.S. economic conditions have diminished. The number of Members anxious over the U.S. budget deficit and government effectiveness has dropped more than 30 percent from previous surveys.

Revenues and Capital Spending Remain Strong The financial executives polled for this survey predict another impressive year is on the horizon for small and midsized industrial manufacturers, as 90 percent expect revenues to increase or match 2014. This outpaces the Bank of America 2015 CFO Outlook survey in which 87 percent of those responding expect this same level of revenue success. Much of this optimism can be attributed to strong order pipelines, with 50 percent of Member companies seeing new orders exceeding the levels they saw at this time last year. In another encouraging result, 100 percent of respondents anticipate revenue growth with their key customers over the next three years. Small and midsized manufacturing CFOs are placing greater focus on production this year, as an all-time survey high of 96 percent expect to procure manufacturing equipment in 2015. Other major purchases of note include 44 percent of respondents planning to buy computer hardware and software throughout the coming year. This result deviates from the Bank of America 2015 CFO Outlook survey, where capital expenditures are expected to increase for only 46 percent of those responding.

Employment Up In Manufacturing Small and midsized manufacturing firms are still struggling to find qualified workers to help with ramping up as their industries look for growth. More than 70 percent of Members are experiencing difficulty finding capable employees in their markets with most stating that this is due to insufficient levels of skilled employees in their area. Members are also concerned about maintaining morale and productivity within their existing workforce during this hunt for new talent.

The top response here, at 70%, was that these manufacturers are having difficulty finding enough skilled workers.

Competition Increases Once again, price pressure from competition is the external factor causing the most anxiety for Members, as three-fourths place this concern at the top. Customer demand is the second biggest apprehension, clocking in as a top fear for 67 percent of CFOs. This is the fourth consecutive year that price pressure from competition and customer demand ranked as the top two concerns. Distress over foreign competition cracks the top three for the first time in this survey’s history, most likely as a result of the strengthening U.S. dollar. “In the race to achieve 2015 growth goals, our Members and Endorsed Suppliers are strapping on

There was a slight decline in 2015 in projections of new orders over last year.

Responses to the question about whether the CFO believes its company’s revenue expectations will increase, decrease or remain the same as compared to the previous year. Compares this year’s responses to those gathered from our 2014 survey and also shows a decline in expected revenue increases for 2015, compared to last year’s predictions.

Respondents’ optimism about their own companies’ prospects as compared to the US economy, dating back to our survey in 2010. CFOs have always expressed more optimism about their own companies’ financial prospects in comparison to the US economy, but that optimism has declined for 2015 as compared to the past two years.

Confidence in the U.S. economy among Members rose four points over last year, as half of respondents indicated that they are more optimistic about the U.S. economy compared to 2014. This finding is consistent with the 2014 Duke University/ CFO Business Outlook survey’s 4th quarter results, which found 50 percent of respondents were more optimistic about the U.S. economy when stacked against the previous quarter. Notably this year, CFOs expectations for their own companies’ financial prospects and for the U.S. economy have converged. For the past several years, significantly more CFOs expressed confidence in their own companies than in the economy overall. But there is now rising confidence in the U.S. economy with 50 percent expecting growth, a record for this survey. With regard to the question: Please rate the following with regards to their potential impact on the growth and stability of the US economy this year? (Scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being Not Concerned and 5 being Highly Concerned), respondents offered the following: • US Budget Deficit 69 percent selected a 4 or 5 for this response in 2014 and only 40 percent selected it in 2015 • Effectiveness of the US Government 83 percent selected a 4 or 5 for this response in 2014 and only 51 percent selected it in 2015 • European Fiscal Conditions were identified by 33 percent in 2014 and 54 percent selected it as a high concern in 2015.

Methodology In February 2015, Prime Advantage surveyed financial executives and leaders from Member companies, with annual revenues ranging between $10 million and $4 billion, of which the majority ranges between $20 million and $500 million. The survey received 15 percent response rate from top professionals representing U.S.-based manufacturers in more than 25 different industries, including commercial foodservice equipment, packaging, truck and trailer, material handling, food processing and construction equipment. Prime Advantage has polled its Members for their impressions of current economic conditions since February 2008.

Fronius Offers Battery-Power TIG welding solution Fronius has expanded its range of battery-operated welding solutions to include a variant for TIG welding. Weighing 10.9 kg, the AccuPocket 150/400 TIG is just as handy as the device already available for MMA welding, which has impressed with its TIG functions such as the touchdown ignition and TIG Comfort Stop (TCS). However, the AccuPocket TIG also offers additional, powerful TIG functions such as a two and four-step switchover, which facilitate the welding of thin sheets in particular. and scraping is a practice that has lost its luster for many CNC machine tool builders. Because of the associated costs in time and maintaining skilled labor, it’s an art that has largely been abandoned. At Okuma however, hand scraping is meticulously performed on every machine we build. That’s because there’s no substitute for hand scraping when it comes to maintaining high levels of CNC machining accuracy and sustaining a long, stable and productive life for your machine. The Essential Objectives of Hand Scraping Hand scraping sets the foundation for productive CNC machining. It is performed with the following objectives in mind: • Accuracy Scraping is done to align components within millionths of an inch, allowing for consistently-held, tight tolerances. • Flatness Eight to ten contact points per square inch are created to prevent rocking, add balance when tightening, and to allow for true flatness in parts. • Oil Pockets Some machine surfaces have oil injected onto them. Hand scraping allows for creation of oil pockets, which holds oil on the surface and allows for gliding motion. Without oil pockets, two flat surfaces will stick together. • Appearance The finishing touch of scraping is aesthetic. Once accuracy, flatness, and oil pockets are handled, parts are “design scraped” to achieve an attractive textured finish.

Case Study Flat Machine Surfaces Do NOT Create Consistent Parts Hand scraping introduces carefully placed high and low spots on the mating surfaces of the CNC machine (see Figure 1). While it’s natural instinct to believe that flat surfaces would be better for machining accuracy, this is, in fact, not true. Two flat surfaces in contact on the machine will stick, creating inconsistent machining characteristics. Tight tolerances can only be achieved by adding high and low spots that hold oil and allow for gliding, rather than sticking. Introducing more contact points via the high and low spots also allows for balance and therefore perfect mating. With flat surfaces there is only one contact point, which creates a state of imbalance.

that the machine tool starts out with a solid, rigid foundation. There are uncontrollable process variables in casting such as slight changes in base materials, mold release agents, temperature and environmental conditions that cause each component to have unique characteristics. And, while metal behaves in similar ways from one casting to the next, once it’s released from a constrained position it can move and flex in unpredictable ways. Hand scraping corrects fluctuations arising from these variables. Hypothetically, if a mechanical process were used to perform hand scraping, it would necessarily be based on predictable outcomes. That’s the nature of machining processes. However, due to the variables described above, each component must be handled with consideration for its unique characteristics. This can only be done by experienced artisans who can see, touch and feel where, and how, the scraping must be applied. Okuma’s hand scraping professionals utilize several specialized tools in a variety of motions. Hand pushing, “body power strokes,” and curved scraping are performed as needed to maximize the efficiency of the machine tool’s operation.

Hand Scraping for Mated SurfacesFor moving parts, introduction of high and low points allows the two surfaces to glide together without sticking. For bolted parts, hand scraping creates a tighter fit, which is less likely to separate as a result of the material expansion, contraction and flexing that occurs during CNC machining processes.

The Human Touch For all CNC machine tool builders, machine components are fundamentally comprised of castings. However molding these castings is not always a consistently repeatable process. Okuma recognizes this and utilizes hand scraping to ensure

However, by finetuning the machine so that it operates in balanced harmony rather than creating wear and tear on itself and on parts, more, higher-quality parts are produced, and the machine lasts longer.
