oMAX® CorporAtion to Spotlight lAteSt in WAterjet MAChining At WeSteC Attendees to discover broadest range of advanced waterjet machines and accessories on the market OMAX Corporation will demonstrate how modern abrasive waterjet technology cuts simple to complex parts from any material quickly and precisely at WESTEC 2013, taking place Oct. 15 – 17 in Los Angeles, Calif. The affordable, high-performance MAXIEM 1530 JetCutting® Center and A-Jet® cutting head will be among the many advanced solutions to be featured in OMAX booth 1912. Well suited for smaller fabrication shops and metal service centers, the robust and highly versatile MAXIEM 1530 cost-effectively cuts high-quality parts from most materials, including metal, plastic, ceramic, stone and composites, within a 10 feet 2 inches by 5 feet 2 inches X-Y cutting travel area. The parts are cut directly from the plate with a single tool to reduce set-up time and material usage. The MAXIEM 1530 JetCutting Center utilizes the company’s intuitive Intelli-MAX® Software Suite that provides faster, more precise and more accessible machining than competitive abrasive waterjet systems. With its patented motion control technology, Intelli-MAX Software ensures the fastest, most accurate waterjet cutting across a wide range of materials. The latest version of the software meets the growing trend of manufacturers processing 3D components by supporting up to five axes of coordinated motion on the MAXIEM. With an A-Jet cutting head accessory, the MAXIEM 1530 is able to make precise angled cuts and bevels, as well as automatically correct for the taper normally found in an abrasive waterjet cut. The A-Jet adds two motion axes, enabling the cutting nozzle to tilt over a range from 0- degrees to 60-degrees from the vertical position. It can be used to easily produce beveled edges or cut countersunk holes, as well as machine parts with complex geometries. With its additional axes of motion, the A-Jet allows production of beveled edges in preparation for welding operations. Furthermore, use of this accessory eliminates the need for many secondary machining and grinding operations. FSG-1224ADIII - New surface and profile CNC grinder: The new FSG-1224ADIII Series is a highly advanced, automatic-precision, surface grinding machine that offers improved accuracy, quality and ease of operation. This series includes the new touch-screen control station that is adjustable to a comfortable position for the operator. Switches, buttons, LEDs and indicating lamps are all combined in a touch display that is ergonomically positioned to provide the best user-friendly operation. The FSG-1224ADIII Series includes a new PLC controller that provides a grind cycle with rough grinding, fine grinding, spark-out passes and an automatic over-wheel dresser with compensation, which can be added to fully automate the grind process. After the cycle is finished, the table will “park” either left or right of the saddle and at the front to facilitate unloading and loading. The spindle can be set to “stop running” or “continue running.” The wheel head can also be set to return to the start position or to park at a reference point. Once the cycle is started, the wheel head will move rapidly to the start point and repeat the grind cycle. If material is required to be removed from both sides, “flip over” can be selected, so the wheel head position is at the finished grind height, which will start grinding immediately without touching off.

unbeAtAble preciSion The high-precision milling and machining centers from builder C.B. Ferrari are equipped with Sinumerik 840D sl and Sinumerik MDynamics. In addition to C.B. Ferrari’s standard milling machines, the company’s machining centers with four and five axes are very much in demand. This well-established machine tool company with headquarters in Mornago, Varese, Italy, was founded in 1966 and now employees more than 160 people. C.B. Ferrari’s complex machines are used worldwide in various fields: in the healthcare, aerospace and energy sectors, but above all in moldmaking, the company’s key business. “We take on everything from design and electronic development, to delivery of accessories and development of the CAM software, to assembly,” explains Vittorio Bersi, technical director at C.B. Ferrari. “Our machines have always been equipped with numerical control. This technology is also suitable for the precision milling of complex high-speed profiles. Today, thanks to the close collaboration with Siemens CNC specialists and to the sophisticated and flexible technology of their Sinumerik 840D sl, we have achieved excellent and successful performance.” A new couple: A186 And Sinumerik C.B. to consistently perform all the process steps from the design to the after-sales service. The machine has six controlled and five interpolated (5D-) axes. From the design, even the smallest detail of every structural part of the machine is carried out. During installation, each detail is mechanically adjusted to achieve the geometric perfection of the milling machine. The product that results is the ultimate in term of accuracy over time and does not require later electronic compensation. Since the A186 is a machine used for high production rates, it is necessary to ensure reliability, flexibility and easy retooling. In order to work with high performance targets in term of speed, accuracy and geometric complexity, a perfect integration between all components involved is essential: the CAM must generate perfect trajectories which perform the technological requirements of the cutting process, the CNC must pursue in the best way the trajectories generated by the CAM; the drives must correctly interpret the laws of motion generated by the interpolation, the machine must be mechanically designed to handle the stress that the drives give for the achievement of the performance. To integrate Sinumerik MDynamics was therefore essential in a close cooperation between the specialists of C.B. Ferrari and Siemens, who completed the project very quickly and to the satisfaction of both parties. lAteSt StAte of the AutomAtion Art The Sinumerik MDynamics technology package for high-speed milling is the result of Siemens comprehensive skill in this field and contains extensive specific and innovative functions. These include “Advanced Surface” for example, the advanced control system optimized for high accuracy and working speed, and the new compressor, which is also optimized to ensure high accuracy of the profiles. The solution also integrates Sinumerik Operate, the new, clearly structured user interface, which allows the operator to differentiate the field of use – in this case the

milling – and provides the operator functions for a simpler process control. These include the programming of the working steps and the simulation of the workpiece with 3D-graphics, among other advantages. It is also possible to create sections on inclined planes. convincing teStS C.B. Ferrari developed strict tests in the course of the project to measure the accuracy and working speed of the A186. It was chosen to run the tests on the airfoil finish of steam turbines, a kind of 5-axis milling that requires substantial resources in the NC. The profile is in fact worked with a toroidal tool that requires not only the proper cutting speed calculated by CAM on the whole surface to be worked remains the same – essential in terms of the life of the tool, especially in the working of special alloys – but also strict trajectories in terms of tool orientation, in order to obtain the shape of the profile with the required accuracy. For reasons related to the fluid dynamics of the turbines, it is also essential that the form factors of each airfoil be very precise: the airfoil is worked within tolerances of just a few hundred millimeters. The detailed analyses of actual speed and acceleration showed that the A186 with Sinumerik 840D sl can work on surfaces with high linearity, ensuring a longer tool life and a final result that minimizes the need for manual polishing.

EXSYS to Spotlight toolS for optimizing machinE pErformancE at WEStEc At WESTEC 2013, taking place Oct. 15 – 17 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, EXSYS Tools, Inc. will showcase new innovations in high precision rotary and fixed tool holders that increase CNC turning center output. Visitors to Booth 2116 will learn how the company’s cost-effective solutions, such as its Dual Collect Chuck Line, Gear Hobber System and PRECI-FLEX® Adapter System, easily optimize and enhance machine tool performance. EXSYS recently expanded its Dual Collet Chuck Line to accommodate all of the major brands of CNC turning machines, enabling more shops to maximize their tool turret capacity. The chucks double the amount of individual turret positions to not only increase a machine’s tool storage capacity, but also expand its tooling versatility for different workpieces and help reduce job set up times. The company’s compact Gear Hobber System for horizontal turning centers allows shops to quickly and easily interchange the system’s arbor for holding various sizes of slotting saws and gear hobbers. Arbor diameters are available for all standard sizes of slotting saws and gear hobs. Tool changes take just seconds by removing the yoke plate and sliding out the arbor. The base of the tool holder remains in its station.

Built for heavy machining loads, the Gear Hobbing System offers 45 Nm of torque and speeds of up to 3,000 rpm for hobs or slotting saws up to 2.480” in diameter. When used as a gear hobber, the system allows shops to generate splines, spur or helical gears in one operation. The adjustable system also eliminates having to rough gears on one machine, then transfer them to another for gear hobbing. Furthermore, because of its compact design, the system often operates without interrupting its neighboring tool stations in a machine turret. Other comparable systems typically require the room of two tool positions. The PRECI-FLEX Adapter System for lathe tooling changeovers is the first tooling system on the market with a single-base holder and multiple tooling adapters that utilizes the ER collet pocket. The compact product ensures maximum torque transmission and rigidity, resulting in increased machining accuracy and improved productivity. Additionally, the system’s conical and flat face planar interface allows the use of either an adapter or a standard ER collet, and enables collets, endmill holders, expanding collet chucks and shrink-fit tooling to be mounted on a single-base holder. Available in a range of sizes and styles, PRECI-FLEX provides

unsurpassed repeatability, with every toolholder offering repeatability within three microns. The system also virtually eliminates machine downtime, and allows tooling adapters to be interchanged between fixed and rotary base holders for fast, economical machining.

Another first in coordinAte meAsurement technology Renishaw introduces surface finish measurement for CMMs with new probe for REVO® five-axis system at WESTEC booth #1600. Renishaw’s new SFP1 probe option for the REVO® five-axis measurement system is the first to allow surface finish inspection to be fully integrated within coordinate measurement routines. With a measurement capability of 6.3 to 0.05 Ra, the SFP1 surface finish probe makes the CMM a “single platform” metrology system. It eliminates the need for hand-held surface measurement devices or transporting parts to a dedicated surface measuring machine, reducing labor costs and inspection lead times. The system allows automated switching between dimensional measurement and surface finish measurement, with the analysis contained in a single report. The SFP1 probe is a fully integrated option for the REVO 5-axis measurement system, supplied with two dedicated styli, straight and cranked, which are selected via the measurement program control using the system’s modular rack system

(MRS). The probe incorporates a C axis that, combined with the infinite positioning of the REVO head and choice of stylus holders, allows the probe tip to be automatically oriented to any angle to suit the part, ensuring that the highest quality surface data is acquired. This enables flexible access to component features, combined with the consistency of fully automated CNC control. Using the straight stylus, the SFP1 can perform a measurement trace within a 10 mm diameter bore to a depth of 100 mm. A skidded probe with a 2 µm (0.000079 in) radius diamond stylus tip, the SFP1 probe outputs Ra, RMS and raw data formats to the metrology application software via Renishaw’s UCCServer software, using the I++ DME protocol. The raw data can subsequently be presented to specialized surface analysis software for more detailed reporting.
