determining drawer needs Establishing a systEm First you must establish a method of organization. There are three basic options available: 1. Random Storage. This method provides extremely high density storage and a high degree of storage flexibility. It may, however, limit the speed and efficiency of item location when storing or retrieving. 2. Organization by Family. Items can be grouped according to use or function. Facilitates easy location and efficient storage/retrieval. Less effective utilization of the cube than the first method. 3. Organization by Part Number Sequence. Parts can be located with maximum efficiency. However, this method provides the least efficient utilization of the cube. Random oRganization by sizE 1. Organize items into groupings based on height. 2. Determine the number of square feet needed for eachheight group, based on average inventory levels. 3. Divide the number of square feet needed for each size group by 4.0 (the area of a standard drawer) to determine the number of drawers needed For example: If 16 sq. ft. are needed to accommodate height group A: 16/4 = 4. Thus, four drawers will be required. 4. Allow for expansion. It is generally a good practice to allow yourself 10-25 percent for future expansion. If you are aware of planned growth or expansion, add that to the standard expansion factor. 5. Select drawers based on the heights of items to be stored. For example: If your part heights range from 2-1/2”to 3-1/2”, a Model 120 drawer would be your best choice. It is always better to allow for greater clearance while selecting drawer height. 6. Select cabinet sizes to meet your needs.

Mobile CirCuit breaker Shop helpS CuStoMerS iMprove MaintenanCe CoStS, tiMe Shermco Industries (Irving, TX) is taking PEARL standards on the road with its new Mobile Breaker Shop, a 53-foot mobile trailer packed with breaker testing and reconditioning gear. Shermco's mobile circuit breaker shop includes all the testing equipment, benches, and tools necessary for circuit breaker reconditioning to the PEARL standard and above. "The best thing about the Mobile Breaker Shop is the convenience, cost, and time savings that the customer enjoys by having their breakers evaluated, reconditioned, and remanufactured on site to the industry's best standards," explains Jim Miller, Manager of ESD Shop Services for Shermco and designer of the Mobile Breaker Shop. "Oftentimes maintenance planners at power utilities and other facilities have a difficult time planning scheduled downtime because they really don't know the condition of their existing equipment. They can only estimate how much reconditioning will need to be done to their existing circuit protection equipment. When we do the evaluation and repairs on site, the planner gets real-time information about the condition of their gear and can make better-informed decisions as to their equipment needs - allowing them to change plans rapidly and without impacting outage times." Shermco's Mobile Breaker Shop includes a 5000-lb lift platform to move 480V to medium-voltage breakers into the trailer. From there, a 2000-lb ceiling-mounted crane moves the breakers through the processing area, which includes high-current test sets, spare parts racks, workbenches, part cleaners, polishers, media blasting cabinets, and a painting station. In addition to a full-service breaker shop, the mobile shop has an office, full communications capabilities, and its own generator for power, as well as a high-capacity air compressor that can handle any pneumatic requirements. But not all of the Shop's critical components are made of metal, bricks, and mortar. According to Miller, industry standards from NETA and PEARL for both testing and reconditioning are also critical parts to the Mobile Breaker Shop's operation. "I am a firm believer that standards are a necessary component to keep an industry structured and organized," says Miller. "PEARL and NETA standards

each focus on different areas and both take their lead from the OEM's original performance, specification, and maintenance documents. You have to look at each set of standards and apply them as needed to the situation, whether it's field-testing or reconditioning in the shop. In the end, the breaker has to meet or exceed the original OEM specification. Everything we do ensures that the breaker performs as well or even better as it did the day it rolled off the factory assembly line." Shermco's Mobile Breaker Shop has been in high demand since its completion in late summer 2011. According to Miller, the breaker shop has been supporting power utility maintenance programs across the country for the past several months. "This is a very cost-effective method of repair, bringing a mobile shop to a customer site, and that doesn't take into account the need for spares or prolonged downtime that customers have to endure if they repair through conventional methods by shipping breakers to a service center." Shermco is a proud member of PEARL, supporting the need for standardized electrical reconditioning procedures to guarantee customer safety and equipment reliability while saving the customer money on equipment, repairs, and downtime.

ElEctrical SafEty PionEEr DElivErS KEynotE at 15th annual ElEctrical SafEty, rEliability anD SuStainability confErEncE & Exhibition IEEE Fellow H. Landis "Lanny" Floyd II to explain importance of electrical device reliability as it relates to electrical shock and arc flash protection at PEARL's 15th annual Electrical Safety, Reliability and Sustainability Conference & Exhibition to be held May 5-7, 2012, in Pittsburgh. Electrical shock and arc flash protection pioneer Lanny Floyd will deliver the keynote address at next year's Professional Electrical Apparatus Recyclers League (PEARL) 2012 Electrical Safety, Reliability and Sustainability Conference & Exhibition, which will be held at The Sheraton Station Square Hotel in Pittsburgh, PA on May 5-7, 2012. "PEARL member companies play an important role in helping their customers maintain reliable electrical equipment, but the importance of this work goes beyond what's readily apparent," explains Floyd, Principal Consultant, Electrical Safety & Technology at DuPont and IEEE Fellow. "Reliability isn't just about uptime but safeguarding the workers that interact with electrical equipment." Floyd's presentation will look at the state of electrical safety in the U.S. and the hidden costs of electrical reliability in dollars, employee injuries, and related costs. He will also review the evolution of standards, codes, and regulations as they relate to personnel protection - both at the customer site as well as in the PEARL member electrical reconditioning shops. "Reliability is critical to new devices installed at a customer facility, but then it's up to the end user to keep the device maintained and ensure reliability as needed," adds Floyd. "We'll also look at new diagnostic technologies that will help customers monitor the reliability of their electrical equipment. A worker standing in front of a panel is betting their life that arc flash calculations have been done right and that their personal protective equipment will keep them safe. Industrial automation equipment and

new GFCIs use sensors and indicators to show if a device is working properly. We need H. Landis "Lanny" Floyd II to expand these monitoring concepts to other industrial electrical devices that serve to protect workers from electrical hazards." The PEARL conference offers attendees two days of industry presentations for business leaders and management, and a two-day, two-track training program for electrical technicians looking to improve their skills. Presentations start on Sunday with opening remarks from Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, followed by insight on building a remanufactured product industry from William Gager, founder of the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers Association (APRA). Presentations continue Sunday and Monday, including presentations on effective business management; circuit breaker conversions and switchgear life extensions; business opportunities related to electrical equipment safety; and updates on the latest PEARL standards, ANSI efforts and a proposal for a new PEARL Technician Certification training program. A two-day, dual-track training course that focuses on low-voltage circuit breakers and medium-voltage contacts, respectively, will run concurrent with the technical program. Interested attendees and exhibitors should contact the PEARL office at (877) 287-3275, send an email to pearl@ pearl1.org, or visit www.Pearl1.org. Corporations that join PEARL within 30 days of the end of the conference will have up to 100% of their conference registration fee applied towards their first year's PEARL membership.

TechniTrol Uses PeArl i&T sTAndArds To GeT rr donnelley TrAnsformer UP And rUnninG in 36 hoUrs When RR Donnelley, one of the world’s largest publishers and printers, lost one of two 2500 kVA transformers at their Appleton, WI plant, the cards were stacked against a quick return to service. The failure happened on Saturday night. The transformer was 40 years old and had an unusual 34,500V primary with 4160Y/2400 secondary. Temporary power would take days to install, and the nearest replacement was four weeks away. But that was before they called PEARL member Technitrol, Inc. (Germantown, WI). “The plant had already sent the workers home because they didn’t have any power,” explains Jim Feilbach, Technitrol President. “They usually run shifts 24/7, so they were losing a lot of productivity. Running a generator would have taken a lot of site preparation, if they could find a generator to match their needs, at a cost of $10,000 per week plus fuel. Luckily, we had a compatible 5000 kVA transformer on hand with the correct primary and secondary voltages, as well as the PEARL Inspect & Test standards to test the performance of the unit before we shipped it to the facility.” Technitrol had purchased a comparable ABB transformer 18 months prior and kept it in inventory for just such an occasion – not an uncommon situation for the independent electrical reconditioners and distributors that make up the PEARL membership. After taking the call on Saturday night from long-time customer Mike Choudoir, Vice President of Steinmetz Corp., an electrical field service and engineering company, and confirming through his online inventory that Technitrol had a replacement in stock, Feilbach called in his technicians and got to work. “We did all the oil and gas tests – including PCB, TTR, winding resistance, and dielectric absorption – as well as the electrical and physical tests outlined in PEARL Inspect & Test standards 2220 and 2230 [Medium Voltage Transformers Pad Mount Oil-Filled and Gas-Filled, respectively],” says Feilbach. “We arranged for a 300-ton crane with 80-feet of boom to lift the old ITE transformer from its location in the center of the plant at the same time we delivered the replacement transformer – no small task in a 40-mile-per

The replacement 5000 kVA transformer not only saved publisher RR Donnelley weeks of downtime waiting for a replacement, but can also provide backup in the event the existing transformer (to the left of the new unit) fail or if the plant needs to expand.

hour wind! Working with Steinmetz, we were able to get their customer up and running by 11 p.m. Sunday night, just 36 hours after the original transformer failed.” Steinmetz’s Choudoir couldn’t have been more pleased with Technitrol’s response and confidence that the transformer had been tested to PEARL’s standards. “We always appreciate Jim’s willingness to pick up the phone at any time and use his contacts to find the equipment we need,” says Choudoir. “That, plus the fact that the product is tested before delivery, takes the worry out of getting a piece of dead equipment. The customer is already upset because their plant’s down, and getting a piece of DOA equipment doesn’t make things better. We’ve counted on Technitrol a lot in the past. They have always come through for us.” As an added bonus to the time and money savings that Technitrol delivered through the I&Ttested surplus transformer, RR Donnelley now can count on additional power for future expansion, or have the ability to run their plant should the remaining original 2500 kVA transformer fail.

Founded in 1997, the Professional Electrical Apparatus Recyclers League (PEARL) creates, collects, and disseminates information, policies, procedures, and standards to ensure the proper recycling and reuse of electrical power equipment. Its 70+ corporate members must meet strict technical, safety, and operational requirements.
