CUSTOMER CASE STUDY

“Video is key to meeting the FDA and DEA compliance requirements and for operational purposes such as efficient workflow supervision.” “We had several DVR hard drive failures that made video unavailable when we needed it. Intransa presented a data center-grade storage solution that keeps the system running.” – Derrick Wright, CPP, Manufacturing Security Manager, Baxter Healthcare

Baxter International Leverages Intransa IP Video Storage for Improved Surveillance Reliability and Expandability Baxter International Inc., a global healthcare company, needed to transition from analog to digital IP technology at its 376,000 square foot pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Cherry Hill, NJ. The existing system consisted of 130 access control card readers, 100-plus fixed and PTZ analog cameras, seven DVRs recording 24/7, and an addressable fire monitoring system. Together, the system provides security, workflow supervision, safety and quality control functions. The company developed a business plan to solve needs, mitigate risks and add value with the deployment of IP technology, including an Intransa scalable external IP storage system. The new Intransa solution enables Baxter to eliminate the risk of video loss, more than double video storage capacity, and establish a “future proof” IT standards-based storage platform that can expand as requirements grow. By deploying Intransa IP storage, Baxter was also able to migrate to digital technology, adding 20 new network cameras and replacing 25 analog cameras with new network IP versions. The company plans to switch out the rest of the analog cameras as they reach end-of-life, while in the meantime they continue to be supported by the Intransa storage system. Baxter plans to deploy a total of 200 IP cameras surveilling both the interior and exterior of the Cherry Hill manufacturing facility. Previously, the seven existing DVRs each supported about 500GB of storage. Today, the DVRs continue to be used to search and serve the video, unchanged. However, the video now comes into the DVR from the existing analog and new IP network cameras and is written directly to the Intransa IP storage, greatly improving performance. This was made possible by each DVR having been equipped with a network interface card to connect via IP as part of the simple upgrade process performed by Intransa StorPartner security integrator Eye P Video Systems, LLC. Baxter has the choice of using the “native” video management software the the DVRs are equipped with unchanged, or can use the video management system (VMS) of their choice, since most of the common VMS systems participate in the Intransa SecurityGrade IP Video Storage program and have already been certified for use. Thus, existing cabling, cameras, DVRs, and even procedures remain intact, minimizing operational and financial impact yet gaining the power of IP. With fault tolerant, IT-grade technology used throughout the Intransa IP storage solution and with integrated, advanced RAID protection, the risk of lost video of unprotected DVRs is also a thing of the past for Baxter. The Intransa IP storage solution can also be modularly and affordably upgraded as needed, growing to support new applications and devices with up to 1,500TB of reliable, high performance video storage.

CUSTOMER CASE STUDY Leveraging the Power of IP The Intransa IP storage solution is flexible and upgradeable, and allows Baxter to continue using their deployed analog cameras as well as infrastructure, cabling and DVRs while gradually migrating to an IP solution. The deployed Intransa system is a StorStac BuildingBlock1 high availability configuration, with a total of 20.25TB of storage installed in the first phase.

Scalable IP Storage

Since Intransa IP storage systems are modularly upgradable to 1.5PB of RAID protected, fault tolerant storage, Baxter never has to be concerned about running out of affordable capacity or of ever losing video again. And since the existing investment in analog technology remains in use and gains the benefits of Intransa IP storage, the entire system benefits, both new and old.

Intransa StorAlliance Technology Partners integrating with Intransa external IP storage solutions include more than 40 physical security vendor’s products plus those of more than 35 IT vendors. Intransa StorPartner Security Integrators offer complete video surveillance and other solutions to meet the most challenging customer needs.
