Project Profile/Education MATE – Intelligent Video helps Universities detect and deter vandalism to athletic fields, buildings and artwork Customer Needs: Universities must contend with vandalism targeting athletic fields, buildings and artwork. Even with large numbers of cameras deployed for surveillance, vandals manage to evade detection and enter restricted zones after hours. The damage is often discovered only after the vandals have fled. Universities seek ways to detect and deter vandalism before major damage is incurred. The Environment University campuses are often sprawling complexes of buildings that are in use at different hours. Frequently the entire University property is accessible to the general public. Given this open environment, establishing a defined perimeter is very difficult. It’s more practical to establish surveillance around particular sites on Campus and monitor them for defined behaviors. However more cameras don’t solve the problem since resources to monitor them are limited. System Deployed MATE’s Behavior Watch systems provides Universities the capability to protect key sites from intrusion and damage by establishing automated monitoring using our video content analysis software. For athletic facilities, our Video Motion Detection algorithm is used to monitor playing fields during certain hours or days when they are closed to the public. Statues and artwork are protected using our Presence rule to detect people moving too close or throwing items at the object.

Left: A perimeter zone is designed to protect the track, field and equipment storage on days closed to public, students. Two people are detected after jumping over the fence. Their trajectory is shown on the image. Right: A secure area is drawn around the statue triggering an alarm when someone approaches the statue too close or throws an object at it.

Customer Benefits MATE’s solutions help Universities lower or avoid repair costs from vandalism by detecting events as they occur. Deploying automated surveillance also eliminates the need for constant patrolling of vulnerable areas allowing Security forces to focus on improving general safety on the campus. Mate Cortex Management system allows for monitoring of hundreds of cameras from multiple locations to provide the greatest flexibility and fastest response. Pre and post alarm clips are available to help Campus Police locate and apprehend the culprits. MATE Tri-Layered Shield for enhanced security

Layer 1: Perimeter Protection. Video cameras form a virtual fence that augments or replaces a physical barrier around the perimeter. With Video content analysis, intrusions such as crossing boundaries, moving in a no-man-zone or throwing an object over a fence are detected. Mate’s Intelligent Video detection and transmission devices transform surveillance cameras into an additional line of defense.

About MATE MATE is a global provider of Intelligent RealTime networked solutions for pro active video surveillance. Its advanced technology detects and analyzes potential threats and hazards, generating real-time alerts upon discerning events. MATE offers a complete line of video analytics products including PC based systems and embedded (DSP) based systems. MATE video analytics products offer the flexibility of detection on either analog or IP cameras. MATE's solutions are controlled by smart centralized management software, assisting security personnel to enhance security operations and improve vigilance. Founded in 1997, MATE is headquartered in Ra'anana, near Tel-Aviv, Israel with its US offices located in McLean, Virginia.

Layer 2: Site Surveillance. Terror and crime cannot always be stopped at the perimeter. This is particularly true in public venues, which are either open for all or do not have effective means for screening at the perimeter. Detecting motion alone is insufficient to identify threats, so video content analysis must incorporate Behavior Tracking. With Mate’s technology, surveillance cameras identify abandoned objects, stopped cars, objects removed, excessive speed, movement in the wrong direction, and other alarm-triggering behaviors. Layer 3: Access Control. Security procedures at doors and gates can de compromised through ‘tailgating’- following an authorized individual through an access control point without using a separate valid credential. Mate prevents or detects such tactics by counting people and comparing the number of access grants with the number of actual entries. Mate people counting technology is also used to measure pedestrian flow at entrances.
