Information and Notes
Please note new email address at the bottom of this mail
As noted down in my non-professional understanding of everything discussed at the meeting. Just a heads up: I (Bambine) inherited the position of ’manning’ the Facebook page. The page will only be as active and informative as you make it. In order to get onto the page, you will have to send me a friend request asking for me to please put you onto the Bariatric Facebook page and I will accept your friend request and add you to the page, thereafter I will delete you again. The form that is attached to this mail will give your permission if you want me to add you to the Page, if you are not already on there, I will then send you a Facebook request and add you to the group. With the internet / social media and emails being exchanged you join at own risk with regards to privacy. As mentioned above. We have over 150 names on our database and only a few handfuls of people regularly attend our meetings and show in interest in the meeting notes I send out. Due to privacy reasons and update changes in the database, we request you to please fill in the attached form. Only the information on the completed forms will be added to the new database. If you have not completed the form, you details will be deleted off the old database and you will no longer be receiving messages regarding meetings or meeting notes, so please complete the form. https://forms.gle/2KNp2fPQVUarN7rGA Agera Hair Growth Formula: Hair product discussed at the meeting – It is about R200 (see photo) at DisChem – We need feedback from patients, please send to Judy. A member brought up about a fear of Vomiting: Vomit – early vomit risk for op patients (post op) Not always a concern when you do vomit Changed anaesthetics has caused less nausea as they try not to use Morphine Medication to combat nausea can be taken should you feel nauseous. Question asked by member: How soon can we exercise after op? After about 2 weeks then general and fitness exercise. No strenuous activity, stabilize, don’t over exert yourself. It takes 4-6 weeks for pouch to heal properly (An anastomosis is a connection or opening between two things -especially cavities or passages - that are normally diverging or branching, such as between blood vessels, leaf veins, or streams.) 10-14 days to detect leakage
Use of Anti-inflammatories 1. Find cause of pain does it need anti-inflammatory? 2. get meds that protects the stomach lining if you will be taking Anti-inflammatory (do not use for long term) In a degenerative condition - anti-inflammatory is only short solution o Might need operation To be used 14 days max – any discomfort stop asap and check with doctor A member mentioned that 1 month after operation she had plenty energy, but now 2 months post op, she feels very lethargic and has very little energy. Doctor mentioned this is normal and that your body is using all reserves now. But if persist speak/see Dr for blood tests. This not uncommon, body ‘crushing down’ A member asked when they can stop their chronic meds? You don’t decide when to stop chronic meds! The Doctors will decide once you go for your post op appointment and once your bloods have been done and proved all is in order. The operation does not cure Blood pressure, but things like Cholesterol comes down in the long run. Medical Aids paying and BMI: BMI 40+, medical Aids will consider without any co morbidities BMI 35+ Will consider if you have co-morbidities Judy: -
Wait about 6 weeks before swallowing tablets, need to crush tablets Do not stop using meds because of surgery 2000 KJ intake – till goal wait - for 1st year low When you exercise a lot more - Long term for ladies 5000 KJ post op
Supplements post op: 1. B12 injection – Life long (Autrin is a good one) (B12 spray - too little for someone with our surgery) 2. Calcium life long - Calcium citrate x2per day, not at the same time and not at the same time as your iron 3. Iron (may/not life long) 4. Multivitamin – till reach target weight – put Judy think we should continue Operation resets metabolism, enable you to loose and maintain. But you will be able to regain. Check calorie intake, there is always a reason - find and fix it. Meal replacement – GI Lean and a few others on the market
Feedback always appreciated on any issues discussed at the meeting and or questions anyone might have.

This Bariatric Support group was started many years ago (in 2008). There are some other support groups in the Western Cape who gives support to patients by other surgeons. We would just like to stress that our particular support group is exclusively for patients of Dr. Potgietter and Dr. Swanepoel only. Please feel free to invite anyone you might know that are interested in this procedure to come and find out more information, they are very welcome to do so… The support after surgery is only for Dr. Swanepoel and Dr. Potgieters patients.
