Information and Notes As noted down in my non-professional understanding of everything discussed at the meeting.
Meeting attended by Committee: Bambine Rogers (073-141-2580), Rhine Barnes and Sandi Loggenberg and Dr. Swanepoel.
Welcome to all our new members! Some things discussed and brought up… Dr. Swanepoel mentioned that we mustn’t measure our results in weight loss but rather by our metabolic gains. Eg, no more blood pressure issues, no more sleep apnea, diabetes etc… The aim of the game is to be healthy and that is inevitably what we all gain through this surgery. Don’t be too hard on yourself. A few members asked about bowel movements and for it to be discussed and a question was asked about ‘floaters’. This is called Steatorrhea. Below is something sent to us by Dr. Swanepoel Steatorrhea, or fatty stool occurs when there is too much fat in the stool. This may lead to pale stools and “floaty” stools. It occurs in up to 20% of post Gastric bypass patients and usually disappears or markedly improves after 4-6 months. If it occurs and is troublesome we would recommend to decrease the fat content in the diet including: · nuts, especially whole nuts with the skin or shell intact · oily, high-fat fish · artificial fats, essential oils , coconut and palm kernel oil · whole wheat products etc. · Diarrhea can be caused by fat malabsorption or an increase of bile acids in the colon (although there are many other reasons as well ). If the above is a problem to any of the post –op patients Dr. Swanepoel recommends the following : Diet adjustment as above. Increase fresh vegetables , decrease the fat content. Increase oral pro-biotics eg. LP 299 V for three months or use bile acid binder ( Cholestiramine / Questran light ). If the problem continues despite the above contact Judy Kotze or your Doctor. We were very lucky to have Lizette de Jager from Elysan (Equip, Encourage and Empower) come and chat to us about her services. I know many members found it very helpful and I learnt a thing or two! I have attached all the info she sent to us as well as her details. Nothing like a feel good outfit to top up our day and make us feel extra awesome!!
Please JOIN OUR FACEBOOK PAGE!
(Bariatric Surgery Support Group)
We encourage members to be more active on our Facebook group as this will encourage others. Share recipes, ideas and ‘before and after’ pics are always a great motivation to others. This group is private and can’t be seen by the public. You will have to send Sandi (Sandi Loggenberg) or myself (Bambine Rogers) a ‘Facebook friend request’ (Please add a message saying you would like to be added to the group), we will then add you to the group. I know I don’t accept random friend requests, so please state who you are and your intentions for befriending me, else I might just think you’re a stalker and I don’t add you. lol.
Feedback always appreciated on any issues discussed at the meeting and or questions anyone might have. bambinerogers@gmail.com
