1. SOURCES WORKBC EMPLOYMENT SERVICES CENTRE GRAND OPENINGS Thanks to the leadership of Employment and Community Services Director Dan Scott, our community partners and the rest of the Sources team, we were successful in our proposals to the Ministry of Social Development to deliver employment services.. This culminated in the grand opening of two Sources WorkBC Employment Centres: Cloverdale and South Surrey/White Rock. Both centres offer free customized services to all unemployed British Columbians including specialized populations and persons with multiple barriers to employment.
Sources WorkBC Employment Services Centre Cloverdale Grand Opening Sources WorkBC Employment Services Centre in Cloverdale celebrated its grand opening on November 21, 2012. Guest speakers included Minister of Social Development Dr. Moira Stilwell, centre staff, and CEO of Sources Community Resource Centres David Young.

“The centre is part of the Employment Program of B.C. – launched on April 1, 2012 when the provincial government restructured how employment services are delivered in B.C.”, said Cheryl Scardifield, Program Manager. “Clientele ranges from youth just entering the workforce who are lacking work experience to highly educated and skilled people with many years invested in the labour force”, she said.

The centre is located at 101 5783 176A Street. It has a staff of 11 specialized professionals serving residents of Cloverdale and Port Kells. The centre provides free job search assistance and workshops including resumé writing, interviewing, networking, accessing the hidden job market and more, along with employment counselling, wage subsidy program resources, and information on self-employment.

Sources WorkBC Employment Services Centre: White Rock & South Surrey Centre Grand Opening
Sources Newton Resource Centre celebrated its grand opening on October 12, 2012. The event coincided with Sources’ Annual Homelessness Awareness March. Hundreds of volunteers, staff and community supporters joined the event. The Newton Resource Centre is dedicated to the empowerment of individuals and families through education, advocacy and the creation of supportive, community based networks. Through this empowerment, we can make a lasting difference in the quality of life for families and individuals in need. Our centre serves thousands of families and individuals yearly. We envision a society where people on a limited income are treated with dignity, respect and without prejudice. We encourage them to actively participate in their community.
Close to 60 community members were welcomed by staff at the grand opening event on June 21, 2012. The event featured the musical sounds of local celebrity Delaney Rose and keynote speakers including Honorable Stephanie Cadieux (former Minister of Social Development), White Rock Mayor Wayne Baldwin and Sources CEO, David Young.
Services at this center help local individuals in our community access programs and services such us: Poverty Law Advocacy Services, Disability Support Advocacy, Mental Health Consumer Advocacy, Housing Stabilization & Loss Prevention and Empowerment Services. The centre is also home of Sources Rent Bank that provides short-term funding to families and individuals who are at risk for home eviction.

In January of 2012, we had the honor of welcoming the South Fraser Women’s Services Society (SFWSS) to the Sources family. Sources has a long history of mutual concern for community challenges, as well as collaboration with SFWSS on a range of services dealing with issues of food and income security, homelessness and abuse. Together we will be better able to expand our scope to improve support for women in our community. We are delighted that we have been able to appoint former SFWSS Executive Director Denise Darrell as our first-ever Director of Women’s, Seniors and Community Services.
On June 7, 2012, Sources held the premiere screening of a locally made film Balancing Act. The event included a public screening of the film and a panel featuring the filmmaker Don Li-Leger, MLA for Surrey-Fleetwood Jagrup Brar and Sources CEO David Young.
4. SOURCES CONCIERGE A Great Addition to Sources Core Services South Fraser Concierge re-branded themselves in 2012 as Sources Concierge after the SFWSS merger with Sources.

WOMEN’S PLACE OPENING
Sources Concierge is a Social Enterprise. By definition, a social enterprise is an organization that applies commercial strategies to maximize improvements in human and environmental well-being, rather than maximizing profits for external shareholders. South Fraser Concierge was conceived in late 2009 and was in full operation by January 2010.

18% of Surrey residents live in poverty struggling every month to cover basic needs such as housing, transportation and food. Food banks provide food security and access in a dignified manner to some of our community’s most vulnerable residents.
Sources Concierge provides reliable, trustworthy and quality residential cleaning services in the Surrey, White Rock, Langley and Delta areas. We are also available for move-in/out support, packing/unpacking and organizing. In addition to exceeding clients’ expectations, we provide value-added features and benefits not offered by most house cleaners. We offer senior support services which include checking in on loved ones, companion visits, transportation for medical appointments and errands, as well as help with meal preparation and home downsizing sale preparation. All of our staff are trained, bonded and insured.
Local artist Don Li-Leger was drawn to the movement within the Sources Food Bank as a focus for his documentary film. “Balancing Act” gives an inside look at the clients who frequent the Sources Food Bank. It dispels stereotypes and myths about the ‘typical’ food bank client, and reinforces the fact that there are many more individuals and families who may be one pay cheque away from needing to use services like the food bank. One volunteer in the film remembered a conversation she had earlier with a food bank client: “He looked me in the eye and said it could just as easily be me on your side of the counter and you on this side receiving food.”

‌For Sources. For Our Community. 6. SEASON OF TREES FUNDRAISING EVENT During the 2012 holiday season, Sources kicked off its first-ever Season of Trees fundraiser at the Sheraton Guildford. 15 local businesses participated in this fun event. Each business decorated a tree with their company flair. The trees were displayed at the Sheraton for a two- week period so that members of the public could view them. The fundraiser culminated with a Wine and Cheese Tree Auction event on November 28th where the trees were auctioned off to the highest bidder through both live and silent auctions. The event raised $5,000 and will now be an annual event for Sources.

SOURCES SEASON OF TREES WINE & CHEESE EVENT
7. EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS Sources in partnership with the City of White Rock has spent the last few months educating the older adult community on personal Emergency Preparedness. Funded by the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM), this essential project aimed to make the community more age-friendly. Enhancing education and awareness amongst older adults makes them better able to deal with community emergencies. Past research and community based knowledge indicates that emergency preparedness is a key area of need for older adults (and the broader community in general). The project also served to connect older adults with other resources, programs and services that exist in the community.

2013 : A Bright Year Ahead… Imagination Library. This is the second annual award for The Imagination Library because of Sally’s efforts. Sources was instrumental in bringing The Imagination Library to South Surrey and White Rock and continues to be a firm supporter.
It even supplements its locally sourced supply of produce through a volunteer-led garden.
2. BUILD THE BANK
With the move to a new home scheduled for June 2013, we have a large task in front of us; our goal is to raise $500,000 to support the purchase and renovation of our new building.
With population projections in South Surrey estimated to grow from 80,310 to 129,410 by 2041, we can expect a growing need for our services.

1. SUNCOR ENERGY FOUNDATION DONATION On February 12, 2013, Sally Grant of the Suncor Energy Foundation presented a cheque to David Young, Sources CEO, on behalf of the Foundation. The organization is a private, non-profit, charitable foundation established by Suncor Energy Inc. in 1998 to channel Suncor’s contributions to support registered Canadian charitable organizations. The Foundation invests in initiatives that meet the requirements of registered charitable organizations for Canadian tax purposes and align with the company’s funding priorities.
This will allow us to continue to meet the growing food security and poverty reduction needs of our community. We are looking for community partners to support this purchase and renovation.
Our Sources Food Bank has outgrown its capacity and we are proud to announce that we will be moving to a new space to enhance our services and continue to meet the needs of our most vulnerable citizens. We would like you to help us lay the foundation for sustainable support of our community. For the last 30 years, the Sources Food Bank has been a key fixture in the community providing healthy and nutritious food to community members in need. Each week, the food bank provides support to 560 people. In 2012, the food bank provided support to 1654 individuals, of whom 526 were children. In addition to food, the food bank provides clothing, shower facilities, laundry, and plays an important role in helping clients to navigate other community supports.
We are inviting community members to participate in our “Build the Bank” capital campaign. Your contribution will go towards renovations, shelving and other needed renovations. We would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you to discuss support and donor recognition options. SAVE THE DATE: April 26th, 2013 Older adults in the communities of Surrey and White Rock are a pivotal part of the volunteer and civic participation tapestry in these cities. As a communitybased collaboration amongst non-profits, businesses and local community members, The Semiahmoo Peninsula Seniors Planning Table has been working hard to plan the area’s second Volunteer Appreciation and Opportunities Fair to acknowledge the contributions, knowledge, expertise and community commitment of local volunteers. The event will be held during National Volunteer Recognition Week on April 26, 2013 and will include a free volunteer appreciation breakfast that will include talks from local adult volunteers and a certificate presentation. Registration is required for the breakfast as seating is limited. To register, please call 604-542-4357 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. This breakfast will also serve to kick-off a public Volunteer Opportunities Fair that will begin at 10:30 am to 11:30 am and will feature a number of local organizations and the volunteer opportunities that they have for community members.
The true measure of our agency’s efforts to promote social wellness for our community rests in the day-to-day work of all of our skilled, compassionate and diligent staff and volunteers. The results they achieve in working collaboratively with our clients and with others in the community are remarkable. Their goals are focused towards helping individuals feed their families, gain new knowledge and skills, find employment and housing, overcome issues of disability, poverty and addiction, reunite with family, reconnect with the community, and ultimately find hope, purpose and a true sense of belonging. These are the individual success stories that inspire and motivate all of us. I thank them for their service.
What does the Sources Rent Bank do? From its inception the Sources/Surrey Rent Bank (SRB) has been grounded in one primary goal - to reduce homelessness for lowincome individuals and families. We do this by providing loans for rental/utility arrears or damage deposit and first month’s rent thus ensuring clients stay in their homes. Loan repayments are reinvested in new loans. The SRB not only provides loans but also prepares the clients for future financial challenges by providing access to financial literacy workshops and one-on-one financial counselling thus contributing to a permanent and lasting change.
