SOURCES’ NEW SOCIAL ENTERPRISE – AN OPPORTUNITY! COMING THIS SUMMER 2014: Sources will be partnering with the City of Surrey to open a new Social Enterprise: Sources Connection Café & Catering.
Sources Connection Café Leadership Team Sources Connection Cafe & Catering will be situated at the entrance of the South Surrey Recreation Center located at 14601 20th Ave. The object of this project is to establish an inter-generational enterprise that fosters the purposeful and ongoing exchange of resources and learning among seniors and youth for individual financial and social benefits. The goal is to promote social wellness for the community by offering sustainable and gainful employment to seniors and youth, collaborating together to operate a financially successful entrepreneurial venture. Sources Connection Cafe & Catering will be a social place for people to connect while offering a menu of healthy options. Revenue earned from operations will provide a source of funding for the Sources Foundation operating as Sources Community Resource Centres, a registered non-profit society. Funds will be invested back into the community on recommendations from both citizens and the board and based on the changing areas of need in our community.
A Social Enterprise by definition is: “Social enterprises are businesses owned by nonprofit organizations, that are directly involved in the production and/or selling of goods and services for the blended purpose of generating income and achieving social, cultural, and/ or environmental aims. Social enterprises are one more tool for non-profits to use to meet their mission to contribute to healthy communities.” -Social Enterprise Council of Canada
The Sources Connection Cafe & Catering model will seek to enlist elder professionals and semi-professionals from our community to assist with the start-up and ongoing operational needs. These individuals will have previously operated successful businesses and will possess expertise in management and operations. They will act as mentors to help seniors and youth gain work experience, develop their skills, supplement their income and enhance their sense of personal value. The Sources Connection Cafe & Catering venture is being supported by the City of Surrey, which provided a purpose-built space within the newly finished South Surrey Recreation Center.

SOURCES’ FOOD BANK “BUILD THE BANK” UPDATE In 2013 Sources launched the “Build the Bank” campaign to raise money for capital improvements required on the new location of the Food Bank.
There was incredible community support for this initiative in the form of brunches (Brunch for the Bank), books (One Great Year book launch), bikes (Pebble Pedal for the Bank) and bites (Ice Cream Party with Champions).
Growth of a Community Garden at the new Sources Food Bank premises With most of the major changes completed, the new and improved facility is now a safer and more efficient place for volunteers and clients. The facility is now home to a 24 plot Community Garden and has begun beautification of the outdoor space. A substantial donation by the Semiahmoo Seniors Support Foundation facilitated the purchase of a vehicle that has enabled the Food Bank to provide “mobile food service” and they are currently working toward a community kitchen. This undertaking has truly been the result of the community banding together. The Staff at Sources wishes to sincerely thank everyone who worked so committedly to this project: individuals, sponsors, donors and volunteers.

The Rotary Club of White Rock is providing two instalments of $25,000 over two years to assist in the purchase and installation of a commercial elevator for the facility. Vancity donated the majority of the shelving to organize the premises. It has been a massive project that encompassed seismic upgrading and significant renovations to accommodate the new elevator and weight bearing load. S

SOURCES’ SIGNATURE GALA: GOLD RUSH – 2014 On Saturday April 5, 2014, approximately 120 guests saddled up to the bar at the Hazelmere Golf and Country Club for the Annual 2014 Sources Fundraising Gala. The venue had been transformed to another place and time with horses, a saloon, chuck wagon and gold mine. The soiree included a general store, casino, dinner and lively entertainment provided by Klondike Kate. To keep the pan handlers out of trouble, there was also a series of mini games - jail and bail, balloon pop and the key to the gold game. These, combined with the very generous contributions of our sponsors, created an incredible evening that successfully raised in excess of $40,000 that will go into the Sources Foundation to assist in providing sustainable programming to support the most vulnerable in our communities. Thank y’all to the Sponsors and donors that make this such a highly anticipated event, we can’t wait to see you again next year on Saturday April 11, 2015 yee haw!

COLDEST NIGHT OF THE YEAR FUNDRAISER On February 22, 2014 Sources participated in the Coldest Night of the Year – a walking fundraiser that raises money for the hungry and homeless in 65 communities across Canada. Over 250 participants braved the harsh winter conditions to complete a two, five or ten kilometre walk and experience some of the challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness.
There were 5 families (2 or more people), 2 seniors and 8 single individuals who with a loan from the Rent Bank had a place to call home. Come sleet or snow, wind or rain, Sources will be involved in next year’s walk and welcome your continued participation on Saturday February 21, 2015.
The response was truly overwhelming and the event raised in excess of $44,000 – nearly doubling initial expectations. These funds will support the Sources Rent Bank which makes short term funding available to families and individuals who are at risk for home eviction due to lack of, or shortage of, a monthly rent payment, utility arrears, damage deposit or other circumstances. In the first quarter of 2013, the Rent Bank issued 15 loans. These 15 loans ensured 25 people remained housed or obtained housing.

SOURCES CAMPAIGNS FOR THE UNITED WAY
INSPIRING CHANGE BREAKFAST
Every year, Sources employees take part in a workplace campaign to raise money for the United Way of Lower Mainland.
150 guests gathered to celebrate International Women’s Day over brunch at the Sunrise Banquet Centre in Cloverdale while being inspired by stories from Stephanie Cadieux – MLA, Paige Glazier from Project Orange and Sources own Denise Darrell, Director of Women, Seniors and Community Services.
This year our goal was to raise $2500.
The sold out event raised in excess of $2000 and planning for an expanded event for next year is taking place.
The campaign regularly consists of employee payroll deductions and a highly competitive annual chili cook-off. This year there was also a Halloween costume David Young –Sources’ CEO competition and the event that propelled us past our goal, a chance to throw a pie at our Chief Executive Officer – David Young. He braved not only the cold, but several full contact pies to bring our total to just over $3400. Many thanks to our staff and our CEO for their outstanding contributions – any word on who will be the target next year?

COMING THIS FALL:
On October 4, 2014, Sources will host the Surrey-Langley Ride for Refuge Canada, a family friendly cycling fundraiser.
RIDE FOR REFUGE
Since 2004 the Ride has raised more than $5,000,000 across Canada and select American States, for charities that work with the displaced, vulnerable and exploited We will be recruiting teams of riders who campaign for pledges and complete their choice of a ten, twenty five, or fifty kilometer route. Currently work is being done to map out the routes including a family-friendly 10 km route, and plans are being made for rest stops, support vehicles and route marshals. Proceeds of this fundraiser will be directed to our Home Save Programs which help people to obtain adequate income supports and address tenancy issues that allow them to stay in their homes or obtain more suitable housing.
