PRECINCT DEVELOPMENT OF KASHI VISHWANATH TEMPLE

2022 / ACADEMIC PROJECT

SITE: VARANASI, UP, INDIA B.ARCH THESIS PROJECT

Varanasi is the oldest living city on earth, older than time itself as claimed by many. The city is an ancient cosmic web that follows orien tation in space, alignment with the universe, and also is a holy city of sa crality, recording religious symbolism and spacial organizations like pil grimage routes and associated shrines. These routes interlink shrines and temples and their associated manifestitive qualities at various levels.

Among the documented 3300 hindu shrines in varanasi, the kashi vishwanath is the most primal and significant shrine. Vishwanath, literally meaning the lord of the universe is one of shiva’s forms which is considered the patron deity of varanasi. Vishwanath temple is the primal center for shaivism and is first among the 12 jyotirlingas (lingas appeared where shiva appeared as a tower of light).

Over the past centuries of development, the temple got surrounded by low-income neighborhoods. As a result, pilgrims had to go through narrow lanes through these neighborhoods which were often filthy and densely crowded. Pilgrims had to stand in long queues in tight spaces for hours. Lack of necessary facilities like seating spaces and refreshments for visitors inside the temple complex add to the issues.. Lots of ancient temples and shrines got burried under these new settlements that came up. There was no space for social and cultural activities, common to other significant temples. Temple authorities faced logistical nightmares during festi vals and large gatherings in the temple when lakhs of people flock into the city. Over the years, many ad hoc attempts have been made to make the situation better, but more often than not these attempts have given rise to further issues.

The idea of this project is to design a comprehensive precinct on the area sur rounding the vishwanath temple that facilitates heritization and rejuvenation of the area by connecting the temple precinct to the ghats of ganga, creating a heri tage corridor with all cultural amenities and civic facilities.

Sacred spaces were built to bridge the macro-cosmos (celestial entities) and the micro-cosmos (self) to discover the dialectic nature of wholeness in spatially limited human habitats.

MULTIPLE ACCESS POINTS uniformly spread around the precinct for even distribution of crowd.

Based on the idea of every part being a unit of the whole, the entire temple precinct has been represented as a single temple. And the temple within the temple is the manifestation of the deity in the temple.

REGIONAL SPORTS COMPLEX

2020 / ACADEMIC PROJECT

SITE: NEW TOWN, KOLKATA

3RD YEAR DESIGN PROJECT

A sports stadium is essentially a huge theatre for the presentation of heroic feats. From such a combination of dramatic function plus monumental scale ought to flow powerful civic architecture. The first great prototype, the colosseum of rome, did indeed achieve this ideal, but very few stadia since then have succeeded as well.

Stadiums are amazing buildings. They can help to shape ourtowns and cities more than almost any other building type in history, and at the same time put a community on the map. They have become an essential ingredient in the urban matrix that pulls our cities together and in so doing provide a focus for our aspi rations. They are also probably the most ‘viewed’ building type in history thanks to the olympics and other global sporting events. They change people’s lives and may come to represent a nation’s aspirations. A regional sports complex is pro posed near prakriti tirtho metro station, eco park, newtown by the competent authority to cater the growing need for a world class sports and cultural amenities In the region. The design of the building must manages to create an urban link between the diverse structure of the metro station, neighbouring quarters, new proposed residential quarter on the eastern side and especially the essence of ecopark. The 100 sqm. Site is defined in thnorth and west by the 50 m. Wide motorway.

VISION & CONCEPT The triangle is an essential part of modern football, from tactics to formation to partnerships, most of football on the pitch happens through triangles. HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL

2018 / ACADEMIC PROJECT SITE: MUKUNDAPUR, KOLKATA 2RD YEAR DESIGN PROJECT

“The reality of the building does not consist in the roof and walls, but thespace within to be lived in.” -Lao-tzu (chinese philosopher & writer).

A well designed school environment has a huge impact on a child’s learning. I can affect a child’s academic progress over a year by as much as 25%. You need to submit a proposal for a senior secondary school building which will act as a safe, comfortable, learning environment for the students. Help create classrooms which engage & inspire children, improving their education.

site is located in mukundapur, kolkata. The site is near the em bypass and the upcoming metro connectivity.
The
site is also surrounded by upcoming resi dential projects.

VISION

The design of a school should primarily be where kids feel the urge to go everyday. The school must be an engaging experience for students where they do not spend 8 hours a day out of obligation but out of interest. Education in the campus should not be limited to just the classrooms and the labs. The classrooms should rather be an extention to the campus. The design should be a perfect intigration of both the built enviroment and nature. The design should have cultural elements embedded into it along with a modern look which would keep it relevent in the decades to come.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

The idea was to intregate the various blocks with different purposes into one building while keeping in mind that the targeted users of these blocks aren’t made to go through other blocks unnecessarily.

The pandemic has shown us how dangerous public mobility spaces can be when it comes to contamination of diseases. The lockdowns have put mo bility spaces to a halt for now but, these spaces are too essential to be shut forever. As the world reboots itself, these spaces need to relooked upon too in order to make them less risky in similar situations in the future. Learning from this pandemic we need to think of solutions to reform the mobility spaces for the post covid world and implement those solutions by redesigning a bus termi nus of our choice.

Offices are clumsy and poorly ventilated with narrow spaces for commuters to stand.

Spacious offices with enough exposure to sunlight, proper ventilation & room for people to stand and move.

No designated waiting areas for people wait ing for their bus which leads to long lines on narrow paved spaces aside bus bays.

Siting area connected to bus bays which prevents long queues for bus & space to move around & interact with the surroundings and no crowds.

Existing problems PROPOSED INTERVENTIONS
Unorganised bus bays create confusion among people and results in unneccesary movement and gathering Stalls scattered all over the perimeter of the site which create crowds at the edges and block pathways. Organised bus bays will create no confusion among people and unneccesary crowd, bay number will be announced previously and people can move accordingly. Separate space for relocating stalls with proper distanc ing and hygeine Many people who sold varous kind of things in the bus terminus and inside buses have lost their livlihoods and many others who sold vegetables, fruits and other stuff too have lost their sourceof income after the lockdown.
To
utilise the bus terminus fully and efficiently hawkers and cart vendors will be allowed to sell their stuff inside the area where stalls will belocated, during timeswhen the terminus will not be in operation like in early mornings.
