Higher Education at South Birmingham College

Are you thinking about going to university, but are concerned about the cost, having to move away or don’t have the right qualifications?

Some of our higher education courses are run in partnership with Birmingham City University. You will complete your studies at the college but you will be enrolled with the university and have access to all the facilities and services of both the college and the university. By choosing to study a higher education qualification at South Birmingham College you will benefit from being able to study locally in smaller class sizes than a university, and possibly at a lower cost. The good news is that you will still be able to progress through onto a full degree programme into the second or final year.

Foundation Degrees

Foundation Degree courses are designed and delivered in partnership with employers. They provide the knowledge and skills required for the workplace and combine a mixture of academic study and workplace learning.

Higher National Diploma

The Higher National Diploma also known as HND is a level 5 vocational qualification which provides both theoretical and practical knowledge in a particular sector. Completion of the HND can lead direct to employment or help you progress onto the final year of a full degree.

Higher National Certificate

The Higher National Certificate also known as a HNC is similar to the HND in that it provides both theoretical and practical knowledge in a certain subject, but it may be a better option for part-time study. Once completed you could even complete another year to top up to a full Higher National Diploma.

HIGHER EDUCATION

Higher education courses don’t have to be studied at a university. At South Birmingham College we have a range of courses that can lead to a higher education qualification that will suit your learning needs and can help you progress.

“I came to South Birmingham College to do an apprenticeship as I knew I wanted to earn as I learnt! It was a perfect opportunity to get real experience of working at the same time as getting a qualification. I have been very hands-on and have learnt a lot and I know that when I come to look for a job I will have loads of experience to offer.”

“I came to South Birmingham College to do a course in beauty after I had been to the college’s salon for a treatment and really enjoyed it. Coming back into education after such a long time was daunting but the support from the college, my tutors and fellow students has been fantastic. I feel like there is always help if I need it. The new salons are very nice; they are very professional and are a great place to learn.”
