In order to undertake a course at South Birmingham College you will need to have a qualification that is one level below the level that you wish to study. If you want to take a Level 3 course then you will need a minimum score of 5, for Level 4 a minimum score of 5.5 and for a Level 5 course you will need a minimum score of 6 or an equivalent score/qualification. If you want to study English for Speakers of Foreign Languages (ESOL) then you should check the entry requirements listed for each course in the ESOL section on pages 15 & 16.

You will also need to demonstrate the required level of English to be able to study your course. How to Apply The UK Government is making a number of changes to the immigration rules for students so you should make sure you check for the most up-to-date information. The immigration rules are split into five tiers and if you wish to study as an international student and you are from outside the European Union then you would be applying for entry under tier 4 of the points based system.

Step 1 – Choose the course you would like

to study, if you are not sure then contact the international office who will be happy to help you.

Step 2 – Complete the international student application form, you will find a copy in the back of the prospectus as well as on our website. Step 3 – Send the application form and

copies of all your qualifications to the international team at the College.

Step 4 – Once we have all of your

documents and passport details, we will then decide if you can study at the College. If you can then we will make you a conditional offer.

Step 5 – You will have to pay your deposit

of £1100, once you have paid this to the College we will then issue you with an unconditional offer which will include your Confirmation of Acceptance to Study also known as a CAS. This is a reference number that you will need when you apply for entry to the UK. Once you have your unconditional offer letter and your CAS then you can apply for your entry into the UK under tier 4 of the points based system.

07

Finance and Fees To gain permission to enter and study in the UK you will need to demonstrate that you have enough money to pay your fees as well as having enough money to support yourself whilst studying. So you will need enough money for food, accommodation, leisure activities and money for any course trips, exams or other costs associated with your course. When you arrive you would already have paid the deposit for your course, but you will then have to pay the remaining amount of your fees. If we do not receive your payment you will not be able to start your course and we will have to inform the UK Border Agency. Your fees are payable for each year of your course, if you do not pay your fees when required at enrolment each year then you will not be able to study, and we will have to inform the UK Border Agency. This may result in you losing your right to study and remain in the UK. You will need a bank account and ideally you should open a bank account with a worldwide bank, such as Barclays or HSBC in your home country before leaving for the UK which will allow you to use the bank’s services when you arrive here. Make sure you ask the bank first though to check that it is possible to access their services in the UK. If this is not possible, you can open an account with any major bank here, but they do not provide the same accounting facilities to international learners as they do for the home population. You may have to pay monthly fees to the bank in order to open an account. If you are planning to open an account it is necessary to provide your passport for identification, a letter from the College to confirm learner status and evidence of your home address in your home country.
