Celebrating our 60th Anniversary! 1957 - 2017 “The Southampton Art School – enriching creative minds for 60 years!”

Since 1957, Southampton has been Bruce County’s destination of choice for artists, students and visitors interested in the appreciation, study and enjoyment of the Arts. The Southampton Art School is one of the oldest, most respected Art Schools in Ontario, with classes running in the spring, summer and fall months. The School has enriched the lives and enhanced the skills of thousand of students for the past 60 years. Since the art school was established in 1957 by Bert Henderson, people of all ages and ambitions have visited the little yellow brick building on Albert Street South, to learn a variety of art mediums such as watercolour, acrylics, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, Plein Air painting and woodturning. Our instructors are among the best artists and teachers in Ontario who are passionate about passing on their skills and expertise to others. We have classes for the beginner, intermediate and advanced students. Classes are a great way to meet new people who are interested in learning and advancing their artistic skills. Children are an important part of our learning community. The Southampton Art School’s Summer Program offers children of all age’s access to a wide variety of classes to inspire them to explore their own creativity and experiment with new art techniques. We offer over 45 children’s classes in July and August. Most of our children’s classes are held at GC Huston Public School on Victoria St. N, Southampton. About the Cover The Southampton Art School put out a call for submissions to our local high school students to submit artwork for our 2017 cover. From the artwork we received, the piece that was chosen was from Marissa Kahgee, a grade 11 student from Saugeen Secondary School. Her artwork is done in Ink & Watercolour. When asked “What was your inspiration for this piece?” Marissa wrote “I really wanted to focus on portraying multiple elements and principles of design. I used ink to build up values in certain corners of the architecture and other shadowed parts of the artwork. By using the elements of line, I managed to create this contrast in values as well as various textures such as wood, leaves and general crosshatching. Using my knowledge of the colour wheel, I used a red-orange colour to compliment my de-saturated palette and to symbolize the infamous Southampton summer sunsets. I also included the 60 in the paint palette at the top to show significance of the 60th anniversary. I wanted to go for a realistic vision of the school with a slight twist of surrealism.” We would like to thank all the students that submitted artwork for our 2017 cover.

Painting Techniques in Acrylics with Peter John Reid Date & Time: September 18-22nd, 9am-4pm Price: $356 Skill Level: Beginner/Intermediate Adult Material list available online

Learn how and where to apply these techniques to get the best results with ease. Each morning is dedicated to a particular technique, discussions, exploration, and practice. We will do a different painting each day, using the day’s technique. Impasto is Italian for paste; in painting it refers to any physical three-dimensional texture applied to the canvas with paint medium or even foreign objects. Watercolour technique is the art of applying acrylic, which is normally used in an opaque fashion, in a watery application similar to watercolour painting. Glazing is closely related to watercolour technique where thin transparent layers of paint are laid on top of base colours, changing the appearance in a way that laying a piece of coloured stained glass might. Wet-in-Wet is using two or more different colours and blending them together on the canvas. Dry Brushing is a technique of using little or no water; applied with a lightly loaded brush the paint is laid down in a broken or scumbled stroke on a dry surface so that the underlying colours are visible. Wet-on-Dry is a technique in which a wet stroke is applied to a dry paint and where the brush stroke is descriptive or textural.
