SouthArk Continuing Education

Summer 2014

1

# never quit learning has officially been adopted by the SouthArk Division of Continuing Education for the year of 2014. It initially serves as a common theme; an idea that each and every one of us are working to promote. However, #NeverQuitLearning is so much more than that. It is a reminder to all of us that we get one chance to be and do all that we can. What better way to spend that one chance than taking advantage of opportunities to further our own knowledge and perhaps, somewhere along the way, helping others further theirs? So we, advocates of continued education at South Arkansas Community College, challenge you to be the best you that you can be. If you want to learn a new hobby- do it. If you want to earn that GED you never had the opportunity to earn - do it. If you want to return to school for that degree you’ve always wanted- do it. If you want to switch career fields to feel more fulfilled - do it. Do what it is that makes you happy but, please, whatever you do

Old Problems, New Ideas In Grief and Loss

Some of the things we have heard and learned about grief and loss are actually not that helpful and there are some more recent ideas that appear more useful and fitting the realities of our experiences. This presentation will look at some old grief and loss ideas to let go and some newer ideas to consider for use. About the instructor: Greg Adams, LCSW, ACSW, FT has been the Director of the Center for Good Mourning (a grief support and outreach program of the Arkansas Children’s Hospital) since 2001. He has been the Director for PalCare (the palliative care program at Arkansas Children’s Hospital) since 2006. Mr. Adams is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Arkansas At Little Rock Graduate School of Social Work where he teaches Loss, Grief, and Social Work Intervention. He was named Community Faculty Member of the Year UALR College of Professional Studies in 2014. He has his Masters degree in Social Work from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and his Bachelors degree in Social Work and Religion from Baylor University. He was named Social Worker of the Year by the Arkansas Chapter of NASW in 2005. Mr. Adams is married with two children - ages 21 and 17.

South Arkansas Community College was recently chosen to join the Plus 50 Encore Completion Program, a national effort to train 10,000 baby boomers for new jobs in health care, education and social services. The program is sponsored by the American Association of Community Colleges . It’s a program that works. Eighty-nine percent of students participating in AACC’s Plus 50 Initiative told an independent evaluator that college workforce training helped them acquire new job skills, and 72 percent attributed landing a job to such training. For more information regarding the Plus 50 Encore Completion program, contact Tara Anglin at 870-864-8456 or tanglin@southark.edu.
