LE T THE LIGHT IN REFURBISHING QUEEN ELIZ ABE TH HALL, HAY WARD G ALLERY & PURCELL ROOM Help us secure our buildings for future generations. Southbank Centre aims to be the world’s most inspiring centre for the arts – with a welcoming site, safe and accessible buildings and opportunities for everyone to take part in art and culture for free. We successfully refurbished Royal Festival Hall in 2007, helping many more people to enjoy and participate in art at Southbank Centre. It’s now time to turn our attention to our 1960s buildings: Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room and Hayward Gallery. You can help us refurbish and restore these extraordinary 1960s buildings to provide the world-class facilities that our artists and audiences deserve. Join us to Let The Light In. The Let The Light In project will make the site more accessible for everyone, as we add new automated doors and lifts to the auditoria. The Queen Elizabeth Hall foyers will be made brighter with the addition of new glazing, creating a welcoming space where you can enjoy free concerts or meet a friend for a coffee (at our new, improved cafe and bar). The performance spaces will be lovingly restored to their former glory, giving our artists a platform to produce world-class art. Of the £25 million needed to complete this refurbishment, we have just £3 million left to raise. Get involved and help us inspire more visitors in times to come. HIGHLIGHTS NOVEMBER 2015 BEING A MAN FESTIVAL
Welcome to Southbank Centre. No jazz festival in the world has the range, quality and excitement of the EFG London Jazz Festival, which boasts thousands of new converts as well as true aficionados. It's a wonderful way to immerse yourself in a musical form that brings exploration and improvisation to the forefront. Do come and take the time to try something unknown – it's worth the risk. And speaking of risk and courage, men are often under pressure to demonstrate heroism, be daring and 'man up'. Our festival BAM – Being a Man investigates what dilemmas and conflicts the modern man faces in a world where everything is changing: work, family, image and gender balance. It's a weekend of fascinating conversation and comic reflection. Please come, whether you're a man or a woman.

What kind of man do you want to be? Who makes the rules about masculinity anyway? Experts, policy makers and contributors from different fields try to answer these questions and others like them at BAM – Being a Man festival, now in its second year at Southbank Centre. There are talks about topics including fatherhood, lad culture, men behind bars, friendship and the work/ life balance, as guests from think-tanks and charities get together to break down the issues As John Donne said, no man is an island, and we get our ideas about who we want to be from our parents and families, from our friends and colleagues, from media and culture and from our private enjoyment of art. As the festival begins, we’ve asked some of the men involved to share the biggest influences on their masculinity and give us a personal take on being a man in the 21st century. BAM – Being A Man takes place from Friday 27 – Sunday 29 November

What’s your favourite song about being a man? ‘If I was Your Girlfriend’. It’s a strange and beautiful song about all the things it’s hard to do as a man like express need and softness and a desire for intimacy. Men often assume that masculinity is about projecting strength and denying weakness. Here Prin ce suggests the opposite – that real strength is about the abil ity to express vulnerability and openness. I’m with him on that . What’s your favourite artwork created by a man? Ralph Ellison’s novel The Invisible Man. It’s a deeply poetic book about maleness, blackness and the psychology of race and prejudice and difference. It’s also absurdist and satirical and a delight to read. It’s a book I turn to time and time again as a way of making sense of the world around me. Without it in my life I’d be quite lost.

WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS In Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy’s early poem ‘War Photographer’, a jaded photojournalist gazes from a plane window ‘impassively at where / he earns his living and they do not care’. But powerful images can have an impact on the way millions of people across the globe understand world events – think of the unidentified man squaring up against a convoy of tanks in Stuart Franklin’s famous image of protests in Tiananmen Square, or the little girl running from a napalm attack in Nick Ut’s Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph, taken during the Vietnam War. In September a photograph of Aylan Kurdi, the young child who died off the coast of Turkey when a group of Syrians tried to reach the EU by boat, seemed to influence the public debate around asylum seekers 4 4
worldwide. Hundreds of thousands of people talked about the image on social media, sharing feelings of horror, dismay and shame, and a petition calling on the UK government to increase support for migrants saw a steep and rapid rise in signatures. This month, Southbank Centre hosts a free exhibition of award-winning photography from the 58th World Press Photo contest, an annual international competition first held in 1955. Selected from 97,912 photos from around the world – from categories including hard news, sports and portraits – these images have been recognised for the way they communicate important messages about the world we live in. Here we reproduce some of the winning images.
