Welcome to Southbank Centre.
HIGHLIGHTS DECEMBER 2015 WINTER AT SOUTHBANK CENTRE WITH NATWEST
We love welcoming everyone to Southbank Centre for our Winter season and throw ourselves into decorating the 21 acres with as many lights as we can muster! Two of our favourite shows return – the joyful Slava’s Snowshow and the risqué La Soirée. A major project for us this year is our Charity Emporium, bringing together 16 organisations for the biggest charity shop in the world over a whole weekend. Not everyone can look forward to a season of plenty and we want to play our part in raising awareness and money for the most disadvantaged among us.
From Slava’s Snowshow to our Winter Market, there’s something for everyone this season. See pages 6 – 11.
LA SOIRÉE
I am delighted that NatWest is generously supporting our season again. They make so many of the free events possible that give Southbank Centre a permanent sense of festival. We hope you enjoy your time with us. Jude Kelly CBE Artistic Director, Southbank Centre The award-winning cabaret show is back for another awe-inspiring, jaw-dropping and downright unmissable Christmas run. From Tuesday 27 October.

HELP US WARM UP WINTER Twelve ways to share the joy over the holidays
As the weather gets colder and the festive break approaches, twinkling lights are popping up in the trees along the South Bank of the Thames, and Londoners are leaving the capital to reunite with loved ones You might have decked your halls with boughs of holly or booked a trip to a matinee, but here are some suggestions about how to really make the most of the winter festivities This Winter, why not make a special effort to spread comfort and joy outside the circle of your family and friends? Studies show that generosity is good for you – even improving your health – and psychologist Elizabeth Dunn has proved that spending money on others (such as by giving to charity) makes us happier than spending it on ourselves It turns out it really is better to give than to receive Pick your favourite idea or tick them all off your list You can find out more about other events at Winter at Southbank Centre with NatWest on pages 6 – 11

This month: La Soirée (see page 8)
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF LA SOIRÉE As the 2015 Olivier Awardwinning cabaret show La Soirée returns to Southbank Centre with its raucous blend of sideshow, vaudeville and burlesque – we go behind the scenes with the troupe’s Mooky and Captain Frodo By David G.Taylor
CAPTAIN FRODO Norwegian contortionist Captain Frodo is a Guinness World Record breaker, also known as ‘The Incredible Rubberman’. The son of famous Norse magician The Great Santini, Frodo describes himself as ‘an all-round showman’. Most famous for squeezing his entire body through a tennis racket, this year Frodo debuts a daring new act that features sword swallowing. I wake up at 5.30am. I have a three-year-old daughter who comes on the road with my wife and me, so breakfast normally consists of making tea and toast – usually peanut butter and banana for my little girl, and coffee for myself. Having done my tennis act for a decade, I know it so well that performing it is enough practice, but my new act needs more work and preparation. Sword swallowing is a serious business and performing it eight times a week means the chances of something not going to plan are very real. I began as an assistant in my father’s magic show, so my father The Great Santini was my first teacher. From there I honed my skills as a street performer, before running away from home with a freak show. Eventually, I found my way to Australia where I met Brett Haylock (co-creator of shows La Soirée and La Clique) and joined his merry troupe of pranksters a decade ago.
4
I love everything about performing, but most of all I enjoy the connection with the audience. At La Soirée we have a unique and highly charged audience response. The intimacy of this show draws people so deeply into the performances that I can see when someone in the crowd truly loses themselves – and the tears in their eyes as they laugh. In my new act I wear a tuxedo and two specially made hats: a fez and a turban. I have all my stage clothes made or altered by costume designers or by my wife. The toughest thing about being a performer is those rare occasions when I have to leave my family behind when I go on tour. Why I can’t come home is a sad thing to try to explain to a three-year-old girl who is so full of love. Once the shows are up and running it gets pretty late by the time I get to bed, so by that time there is very little capacity for thought, but I do sometimes think: ‘Oh, before I forget, I have to... zzzzzz...’

‘Sword swallowing is a serious business the chances of something not going to plan are very real’ – Captain Frodo
‘I like to surprise my colleagues with ridiculous curtain-call outfits’ – Mooky
MOOKY Mooky is the clown persona of the Canadian actor, writer and director Kathleen Cornish, who plays amorous thespian Gloria Rivard in La Soirée’s latest show. Trained at the Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre in the US, Cornish has appeared in independent films and performed on stages around the globe including at the UNIMA International Puppet Festival in Budapest, and notably as a Lead Clown with Cirque du Soleil. A performer’s life is never consistent. Ideally I get up at 7.30am but if it’s a late night, which it often is, that can fluctuate. When I get up, I go to the kitchen, boil some water for oats, mix in some nuts, seeds and fruit – and voila! A hot drink and brekky is served. On Sundays a proper fry-up is in order. I started clowning at events for children from the age of 13 and immersed myself in acting, improvisation, standup, piano... anything I could to learn. I trained with various masters, but most intensively at the Dell’Arte in California under the mentorship of Joe Dieffenbacher (who co-founded the Nakupelle company and toured with Take That). I’m my own agent. Mostly work comes from word of mouth, so folks see you in one show and then book you for another, and I like to get my admin done in the morning, before I get distracted with other things. I like to practise piano a couple of hours in the day where I can and for lunch and dinner it’s usually vegetables with rice or noodles. It’s quick, easy and energizing. I try to add new costumes to my repertoire every season, and I like to surprise my colleagues and the crowd with new and ridiculous curtain-call outfits when I can. My main costume
I have made, as they go through a lot of wear, but I also find things secondhand in op shops and then add some glitter and glam myself. Before a show I have an early meal and I like a little quiet to put my head in a good space. On arrival, I stretch, prepare my props, put on some slap and I’m ready to go. I’ve been on sabbatical so I’m just coming back to the stage following a year-long retreat in the mountains. After the show is when I like to go home and work on future projects, but before I go to sleep I often think about my act and what went well and what I could have done differently. I use audience participation and that’s a constant teacher. What I love most about performing is the people; seeing their joy, surprise and wonder. One of my very favourite performances was my ‘try out’ performance for La Soirée at the impressive Bobino Theatre in Paris. The small stage was so beautifully lit. I was nervous of course, both to impress the Soirée lot and about performing in French for the first time, but the act went off delectably. I remember turning around at the end and the audience cheering ‘Bravo!’ It made me feel like I was in a movie. I hope I always remember that night.
La Soirée takes place at Southbank Centre’s pop-up Speigeltent Tuesday 27 Oct 2015 – Sunday 17 Jan 2016
