1. Stand in a neutral position with your feet together 2. Step your right leg out to the side and then step your left leg to the right, so that you’re back in a neutral position 3. Repeat the move to the left: step your left leg out to the side and step your right leg to the left 4. You can think about it as step, together; step, together 5. Once you’re comfortable with the step, add your own groove with the rest of your body. When I teach this move, I like to think ‘too cool for school’! Let the beat be your guide and the pulse will set you free.

‘Dancing is a sure way to a happier life’ says Uchenna Dance founder and creative director Vicki Igbokwe. And there’s the added bonus of learning some hot moves for your next work do or Friday night out.’ Vicki started Uchenna dance to share steps from house dance, waacking, vogue and African dance with students and performers. ABIOLA F ROM Pineapple Community is a community dance empire, which has made dance available to teachers and communities in London and the UK for the past 15 years. Instructor Abiola thinks there’s one big secret to great dancing: ‘If I teach someone a routine and they put their own little spin on it, that makes it more interesting to look at – and also if they look like they’re having a good time.’

Simeon Qsyea thinks people should learn to dance because ‘it’s something that’s been in our history since man was made... As soon as there’s music or a simple drum beat or a tap or a click of the finger, there’s something that engages us and makes us want to move our bodies.’ The BirdGang Dance Company founder has brought thoughtprovoking hip-hop-based moves to the BBC, Sadlers Wells, the X Factor and The O2. Birdgang Dance is in residence on The Clore Ballroom floor from Monday 4 – Wednesday 6 April, from 1pm – 6pm
1. Standing in a neutral position with your feet slightly apart, bend and straighten your knees so that you are bouncing to the beat 2. Make your right hand into a fist and slowly bring it in a half circle around and in towards your chest (this is on the one count) 3. Extend your arm as if you’re punching somebody (this is on the two count) 4. Drop it to your side and repeat with your left arm, one two 5. Once you’re comfortable, you can walk forwards instead of bouncing, or move your chest in and out, as if you’re breathing, to the one-two count
1. Stand with your feet slightly apart and your arms at your sides 2. Raise your left leg and bend your elbows so that your fists are at shoulder height 3. Stomp your foot and at the same time, send your fists down towards the floor and nod your head 4. Then with your feet planted on the floor, bop your head like the Churchill dog while rotating your upper body 360 degrees. Move your chest and shoulders to the front, then to the right, to the back, to the left and to the front again. You’re swaying all the way round, as if you were drunk!

LET THE LIGHT IN
Refurbishing Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room and Hayward Gallery
THINGS ARE LOOKING A LITTLE DIFFERENT AROUND HERE
Did you know that Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room and Hayward Gallery are currently closed for refurbishment? Over the next two years, some of Southbank Centre’s events are taking place at other venues around London, such as St John’s Smith Square. Meanwhile, there are opportunities to dig deeper into the history of art and culture at Europe’s largest arts centre, and contribute to the future of Southbank Centre.

Why are the buildings currently closed? Since opening in the late 1960s, the buildings have seen millions of visitors, as venues right at the heart of cultural life in London. Queen Elizabeth Hall and Purcell Room have welcomed the world’s biggest stars, such as Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Joni Mitchell and Jacqueline du Pré, and Hayward Gallery has hosted blockbuster exhibitions by Matisse and Van Gogh. Now known around the world as a conductor, a pianist and the music director of several leading orchestras, Daniel Barenboim performed from a young age in Royal Festival Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall. He remembers, ‘I played innumerable concerts with the English Chamber Orchestra in Queen Elizabeth Hall; that was really the beginning of my international activity. The history of performance would not have been the same without Queen Elizabeth Hall.’ Millions of pairs of feet have passed through our 1960s buildings on their way to classical music concerts and gigs, dance performances and debates. But while many wonderful memories have been created inside the concrete, very little attention has been paid to the buildings’ outsides. After almost 50 years of wear and tear, it’s time to refurbish Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room and Hayward Gallery and preserve their unique architecture for future generations, with the Let the Light In campaign.

What’s going on inside the closed buildings? The first phase of building works has now begun. Hayward Gallery’s false ceiling is being removed to let natural light into the building for the first time. Structural works have begun in Queen Elizabeth Hall to create a light and welcoming foyer, and heritage items are being relocated from the Plant Room to the Archive.
Work has started to restore the roof lights in Queen Elizabeth Hall foyer.

Southbank Centre Archive Studio has been supported by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, we are now able to bring to life and make visible the processes of a working archive, uncovering Southbank Centre’s story.
THINKING INSIDE THE BOX
The 3000 boxes in the Southbank Centre archive contain an extraordinary history of performers, audiences and events on the world stage. There are mementos from David Bowie and Daniel Barenboim, fifty years of posters – in styles ranging from 1950s elegance to psychedelia and punk – and even a pair of shoes discarded by a Soviet ballerina before she defected to the West. Since September 2015, archivists and volunteers have been exploring and sorting the archive for the very first time, in our specially constructed archive studio on Level 2 of Royal Festival Hall. Come and have a look or drop in for a workshop and help us bring new treasures from Southbank Centre’s history to light.

A team of treasure-seekers Shh, don’t tell everybody, but to become an archive volunteer, you need just one important qualification: a love of art and culture or an interest in the history of Southbank Centre. Peter Avis started volunteering at the archive in 2006, while Marina Georgiou became an archive volunteer in 2015. Several volunteers work in the archive on a regular basis, and Marina admits that as they sort through boxes, ‘we end up talking a lot about the interesting things we discover.’ For Peter, the visitors’ books have been especially intriguing, ‘In some cases it has been quite difficult (but often great fun) to try to decipher the signatures of conductors, pianists, singers and the like, not to mention the VIPs (ambassadors and politicians, for example) who had been guests in the Ceremonial Box.’
occasionally hunting for specific items. Peter explains, ‘The most exciting items we found – and it took a long time to find them – were the batons belonging to internationally famous conductors that used to be on public display before the refurbishment.’ Marina remembers a filing cabinet filled with records of individual concerts, donated by its owner to the archive. It made her realise ‘that events at the centre are important enough for people to archive their own memories of them.’ The Archive is looking for new Archive Collections and Engagement volunteers to join one of the rounds of eight weekly sessions, runnig until the en dof 2017. Find out more about becoming a volunteer by emailing: volunteer@ southbankcentre.co.uk
The volunteers come in once a week to categorise and store the items in the archive,

Before coming to Southbank Centre, Project Archivist Rhodri Lewis worked at West Sussex Record Office, a County Archive. • As Project Archivist at the Southbank Centre he will be helping to catalogue the sites archives and assist in making them more accessible. • He worked for three months at a Youth Subculture archive in his dream city, Berlin. • His favourite item in the Southbank Centre archive is a programme for a Jimi Hendrix concert. • He is the Manager of the football team Southbank Ladies FC.
As Southbank Centre Archivist, Clare Wood manages the archives, collects new material, and makes the collection available to all. • Her archive training included medieval Latin and palaeography (reading old handwriting) • The strangest item she has ever come across in an archive was a leaky jar of Victorian ox tongue. • She always wanted to be an archaeologist but then went on a dig and decided she preferred organising and labelling the finds...

Pick up the ingredients to make a great meal at home or enjoy something to eat while you’re here. As well as a huge choice of street food, the market sells fantastic tea, coffee and cakes, locally brewed beers and cocktails. We’re always adding new stalls, so make a visit part of your Southbank Centre experience. Southbank Centre Square, Fridays 12 noon – 8pm, Saturdays 11am – 8pm, Sundays 12 noon – 6pm
The Queen Elizabeth Hall Roof Garden reopens this Easter for the spring and summer. An oasis in the heart of London with views across the Thames, it was built in 2011 as part of the 60th anniversary celebrations of the Festival of Britain. There are plenty of hidden corners to sit and relax and a cafe as well as a programme of events and workshops. The garden was created as a partnership with the Eden Project and is maintained by Grounded EcoTherapy, the therapeutic gardening and horticulture group. southbankcentre.co.uk/roofgarden
