Power of Power
THE POWER OF POWER
Told through 16 hours of blockbuster music, Wagner’s Ring Cycle is a mythical tale packed with drama and ideas. From 28 June until 3 July, Opera North present the entire cycle in Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall. This summer, our festival Power of Power takes Wagner’s ideas even further, bringing together expert panels and leading thinkers to inquire into the meaning of power in today’s world. Trace the links between the opera and the festival below, and feel the forces at your fingertips…
POWER
Wagner’s fable about power The first opera in the Ring Cycle, Das Rheingold, begins when a dwarf, Alberich, steals gold from the Rhinemaidens. He intends to fashion a ring that will enable the wearer to rule the world. When the gods, led by their king Wotan, take the ring from him by force, Alberich curses it: whoever doesn’t have it will want it, and whoever has it will live in anxiety until he or she is killed and robbed by its next owner. POWER OF POWER: LAUNCH: SUNDAY 29 MAY The opening of Wagner’s Ring Cycle sets The curse of the ring is a message that’s the stage for ceaseless struggle between still relevant to political leaders today. the different inhabitants of its mythical Once you get to the top of the heap, is it world. Gods and giants battle, dwarves true that the only way is down? dream up sneaky strategies to outwit The first weekend of Power of Power takes them, and the second opera, Die Walküre, an unflinching look at the monsters power introduces a mythical hero who seems can unleash and the consequences for the likely to overpower them all. people who live in their shadow.

Does the Ring Cycle have a message about money?

DESIRE

southbankcentre.co.uk 020 7960 4200
The drama of the opera continues as the ring changes hands. The gods use it to pay the giants for building their fortress Valhalla, and the giant Fafner guards it in the form of a dragon. In the third opera in the Ring Cycle, Alberich’s brother persuades Wotan’s human grandson, the mysterious hero Siegfried, to kill the dragon so that the dwarfs can regain the ring. But when Siegfried falls in love with Brünnhilde, he gives the ring to her. POWER OF POWER: MONEY SATURDAY 25 & SUNDAY 26 JUNE All the characters in the Ring Cycle want to use the ring to pay for things, but Siegfried gives it away freely to the woman he adores. Is love more important than money? Fiction suggests there’s an obvious answer, but perhaps in the real world the question is a little more complicated. The second weekend of Power of Power hosts a series of insightful talks and debates, looking at the currency of power itself, and how human beings past and present have coveted it.
Power is definitely a family business in Wagner’s opera, but family relationships are not without their problems... The Nibelungs, related to the dwarf Alberich, continue his quest to retrieve the ring and its power, by any means necessary. The hero Siegfried is related to the gods, but he is also a mortal man, and the son of Siegmund, who in the second opera fell in love with a married woman (who was also his sister), and was punished by king of the gods Wotan. In Götterdämmerung, Alberich’s son Hagen uses a magic potion to make Siegfried forget his love for Brünnhilde, so that he falls in love with another woman, and agrees to kidnap Brünnhilde, allowing Hagen to obtain the ring. POWER OF POWER: DYNASTY FRIDAY 1 – SUNDAY 3 JULY In the third weekend of Power of Power, we look at the role that dynasties play in the pursuit of power, from Wagner’s tales of feuding families, to the unfolding saga of the American election. The bonds of blood can be both a blessing and a curse.
While waiting on the fell for Siegfried’s return, Brünnhilde is visited by her fellow Valkyre, with a message from Wotan. If Brünnhilde will give the ring back to the Rhinemaidens, the curse will be lifted. But Brünnhilde refuses to give up the ring that Siegfried gave her. Siegfried arrives in disguise, takes the ring from Brünnhilde, and takes her by force to be married by another man. When she sees him at the wedding, himself about to be married, she accuses him of treachery, and agrees to Hagen’s plot to kill him. Hagen murders Siegfried at a feast, and a fight immediately begins over possession of the ring. Brünnhilde finally agrees with Wotan’s plan; the Rhinemaidens will receive the ring again. She rides into Siegfried’s funeral pyre and the flames rise to consume Valhalla as the Rhinemaidens retrieve their Rhinegold.

POWER OF POWER: DESIRE FRIDAY 7 – SUNDAY 9 OCTOBER (Part of London Literature Festival) In the final opera of Wagner’s four-part Cycle, Brünnhilde is inspired by Siegfried’s romantic passion, which he sets above the desire for power. This sets her on the path to her final act of universal redemption. During our final festival weekend, we delve into desire in all its forms and uncover how this human emotion can both shape and unmake power. Desire and sex have long been commodities, but how have the internet and dating apps changed the way we select a partner, what does the future hold for the prostitution industry and how can longing for a better world or a better you bring about social change?

This month:
Power of Power
Read the plot of Wagner’s Ring Cycle, and you’ll probably be reminded of another story set in a magical world, about an all-powerful ring that corrupts anyone who bears it. But while JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings is often voted one of Britain’s favourite books – and films – lots of people haven’t seen the powerful opera that so resembles Tolkien’s storytelling.
‘Streetwise create operas with people who have experienced homelessness’
Southbank Centre wanted to help this summer’s Ring Cycle reach as many new listeners as possible, bringing the opera to hundreds of children and adults who have never heard it before. We set aside 800 tickets for five different groups who are now all set to discover the opera. Performance dates: Das Rheingold: Tuesday 28 June; Die Walküre: Wednesday 29 June; Siegfried: Friday 1 July; Götterdämmerung: Sunday 3 July
A RING CYCLE F DAS RHEINGOLD AND DIE WALKÜRE: LILIAN BAYLIS TECHNOLOGY SCHOOL AND LISTER COMMUNITY SCHOOL ‘The repertoire is challenging, but we are sure that our students will soon become immersed in Wagner’s magical, mystical world,’ says Amy Haynes, a music teacher at Lister Community School in Plaistow. As a member of the Music in Secondary Schools Trust, the East London school sees music as a crucial aspect of education. This halfterm, 50 students are learning about Wagner’s fairytale opera Das Rheingold, in a series of workshops led by Southbank Centre. Lilian Baylis Technology School in Lambeth is one of Southbank Centre’s associate schools,
frequently getting involved in our learning and participation activities, and after music lessons focused on Das Rheingold, an entire year group will attend the performance at Southbank Centre. When the Lister students come to the opera this summer, each one is bringing a member of their family with them to hear the music for the first time. Amy Haynes is enthusiastic about the prospect: ‘We’re looking forward to our students passing on their knowledge and newly found enthusiasm for opera!’
‘Our students will soon become immersed in Wagner’s magical, mystical world,’ 4
DIE WALKÜRE: VOICELAB Whether they’re singing with David Byrne at Southbank Centre’s Meltdown festival, or caroling in chorus to celebrate a wedding on the Royal Festival Hall stage, the members of Southbank Centre’s singing initiative keep things sounding sweet. Voicelab take part in events here throughout the year. Now we’ve invited our community singers to learn more about the operatic voice as part of the Ring Cycle, before coming to see the opera (and giving an interval performance on the day).

DIE WALKÜRE: STREETWISE OPERA SIEGFRIED: TRANSPORT FOR LONDON
© Transport for London
For the past 14 years, Streetwise has created award-winning operas with people who have experienced homelessness, quite literally giving these individuals a voice on the public stage. Southbank Centre has invited Streetwise groups based in three different locations to see and learn about Die Walküre and Das Rheingold as part of our production of the Ring Cycle. Groups from London and Gateshead are taking part in six weeks of workshops before taking their seats at Die Walküre in June, and the groups combine for a joint performance at Southbank Centre prior to the opera. We’re providing coaches to the performance for the Gateshead division, and a group from Nottingham who are coming to see Das Rheingold. Not only is this a special experience for singers who regularly put on their own new operas, it’s also a chance for the groups to meet up and forge stronger links to each other.
‘TfL services all the arts and culture organisations in London,’ says Southbank Centre participation producer Ruth Hardie. ‘Without them, we’d be like local arts centres with a smaller audience base.’ Transport for London doesn’t just ferry visitors to Royal Festival Hall – the organisation also livens up journeys with its Art on the Underground project, bringing contemporary artworks to the capital’s transport systems. Now Southbank Centre has invited 200 TfL workers from all parts of the organisation, including engineers, ticket staff, cleaners and finance managers, to explore Siegfried. Gathered according to their shift patterns, four groups of 50 employees are taking part in workshops on characters, storytelling, music, set design and drama. The groups go behind the scenes on a backstage tour of Royal Festival Hall before taking their free seats for the third opera in Wagner’s cycle.
FOR EVERYONE GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG: QUESTERS AGED 25–40 The fifth and final group who are coming to the Ring Cycle this summer are on a journey through uncharted territory. ‘Going to the opera never really crosses my mind. To me it requires planning, a knowledge of what’s good and lots of money and time,’ says Nicola, a 29-year-old Londoner who nevertheless might consider applying for tickets to the Ring Cycle as a ‘quester’. If you’re aged 25 – 40, and enjoy the cultural events that London has to offer, but have never dipped your toe into the classical music scene, you might like to apply for The Quest for the Ring dinner, organised by Southbank Centre with themed pop-up events company The Art of Dining. Moro-trained chef Ellen Parr and set designer Alice Hodge have created a dining experience that also features music and theatre inspired by Wagner’s operas. Apply for a £45 ‘quester’ ticket by filling in a form on the Southbank Centre website, and you’ll be in with a chance to enjoy a four-course dinner and a ticket for Opera North’s sold-out performance of Götterdämmerung.
WANT TO SEE THE RING CYCLE FOR FREE? All the operas in Opera North’s Ring Cycle at Southbank Centre are live-streamed in The Clore Ballroom at Royal Festival Hall on the date they are performed. You can even buy dinner or bring a picnic! The evening includes light discussion of the performance in the breaks and DJ performances from classical club night Nonclassical outside on the terrace.
