FESTIVAL OF LOVE More fun in the sun! BIG WEDDING WEEKEND Celebrating commitment MANDELA TRILOGY With the Cape Town Opera

WELCOME TO SOUTHBANK CENTRE The refugee crisis is one of the greatest humanitarian challenges the global community has ever faced with millions displaced from their homelands. The Good Chance Theatre was set up in the camp known as the Jungle in Calais with the specific intention to create a welcoming and safe space for the refugee community to tell their stories and situations as well as enjoying themselves. We’re delighted to be able to recreate the theatre here as part of Festival of Love. Festival of Love is full of variety with the Strive weekend and Urban celebration and climaxing in style with the Big Wedding Weekend. Jude Kelly CBE Artistic Director, Southbank Centre

Festival of Love

Theatre of Encampment by Good Chance comes to Southbank Centre ‘Theatre is a social form,’ argues Joe Murphy, one of the two founders of Good Chance, a temporary theatre set up in the Calais Jungle. It’s a simple explanation for why he and fellow playwright Joe Robertson were inspired to build a space for creativity and expression in the middle of the world’s most notorious refugee camp. The canvas-covered dome welcomed people of all nationalities, creating and hosting not only theatre but ‘poetry, music, painting, photography, film editing, clay-making, volleyball - really anything you can think of.’ It became a place for people to connect with each other, human to human, in an extremely difficult environment. 2

The phenomenon known as the refugee crisis is the culmination of multiple factors. ‘We met people from Ethiopia who were moving because there had not been enough rain, their crops were failing,’ the other Joe says. ‘They were moving for reasons of climate.’ As the flow of people around the globe increases, they both feel it’s important to try to listen to each other’s stories so we can better understand one another. This summer, Good Chance builds the original Calais theatre at Southbank Centre for Encampment, a nine day event bringing together theatre, film, art and discussion to begin an extraordinary conversation. Here are some of the highlights.

DRAW YOUR LOVE

MAGIC IS HAPPENING BEHIND OUR CLOSED DOORS Refurbishment works to our 1960s arts venues are well under way. Hayward Gallery’s 66 iconic roof lights are being removed one by one, ready for brand new versions to be installed later this summer. Meanwhile in Queen Elizabeth Hall, the foyer is being transformed into a warm and welcoming space, and the auditoria seats have been removed for reupholstering offsite, so they aready for Queen Elizabeth Hall’s reopening in early 2018. Richard Battye, architect at FCB Studios said: ‘It’s a great feeling to be working with these buildings. They’re unique cultural and heritage assets that deserve and need to be preserved.’ We have just £1.6 million left to raise to complete the refurbishment, so please support our Let The Light In campaign today and help transform these extraordinary buildings for future generations.
