Thirty years ago, five young friends from a Cardiff juggling troupe threw an idea into the air, and ran away with it – and NoFit State Circus (NFS) was born. It was fuelled by creative reactions to Thatcher-era recession, and a mischievous wit right through to its name. Since then, NoFit State has sealed its place at the helm of British contemporary circus, taking its increasingly epic visions around the world. This month, it brings its pulse-racing big top production Bianco – a worldwide success with sell-out performances in three continents – to Southbank Centre for your last ever chance to see the show.
southbankcentre.co.uk 020 7960 4200
Bianco’s spectacle is deeply immersive and distinctly modern, as dreamlike scenes, aerial dynamics and live music envelopes its audience. Still, creative producer and NFS co-founder Tom Rack argues that it has a timeless appeal:
Cast member Blaze Tarsha was originally inspired to join the circus as a schoolgirl, when her mother accompanied the company as their touring chef. Now a multi-faceted performer, her Bianco set-pieces include ensemble work, solo aerial rotator hoop and hula hoop, as well as singing live vocals with the show’s house band.
0.84mm
‘For me, it’s really about the lifestyle and the community: hanging out with these amazing people,’ she explains. ‘My first impression was that everyone was so different, and so welcoming.’ Both Rack and Bianco’s award-winning director Firenza Guidi have a broadranging performance background, and the show is an artist-led creation, evolving through various international incarnations since its 2012 debut at Cornwall’s Eden project. ‘My role in Bianco has changed a lot,’ says Tarsha, who first joined its cast in 2013. ‘Nothing is really finished; you’re always creating and developing as a performer.’ This means that even if you have seen an earlier version of the show, you’ll want to see it again. While there’s a cohesive structure, the show doesn’t follow a conventional storyline, (though its colour includes a subtle nod to Jose Saramago’s novel The Elephant’s Journey). It is richly evocative in its visuals and energy.
‘Bianco is the clean sheet that we begin with, as we commence the performance,’ adds Rack. ‘When you come into the show, you can engage with it on many levels; in a way, there are many stories and themes, and the audience can weave their own tapestry from all the threads.’ These atmospheres are enhanced by Bianco’s recharged new soundtrack from its four-piece band: ‘The live musicians play along to what the performers are doing, and elevate it all to another level; they give the show its emotional colour and texture,’ says Rack. ‘It’s a wild and varied sound, from ballads to rock and jungle rhythms.’
I think you leave the tent feeling like you’ve been in a different world.

‘There is something that is uniquely special about circus,’ he says. ‘It’s the element of the collective: a bunch of people living together, travelling the world, making a show together.’
Blaze Tarsha Member of the cast
210.0 x 297.0mm
There are 22 performers onstage (and in the air) for Bianco: this makes up half of the NFS overall company currently – with the whole collective pitching together to put up its own big-top tent venue next to Royal Festival Hall, before they throw themselves into an intensive pre-show rehearsal period with plenty of stamina training: ‘You don’t really sit down,’ laughs Tarsha. ‘During the show, I’ll be hanging upside down on a rope, then come down to get changed and sing with the band for the tightrope act. So I have to make sure I’m feeling really fit and strong in preparation.’ ‘Our big top is quite special,’ promises Rack. ‘It is quite sizeable, but it has an intimate feel – close enough to have the performers’ sweat drip on you. We like to say it’s organised anarchy, or choreographed chaos.’
‘We have pretty much every circus discipline in this show,’ says Tarsha. ‘I think you leave the tent feeling like you’ve been in a different world. It’s all human mechanics making these scenes happen, and we all work really hard to make the images beautiful and amazing. It feels like there are so many new seeds being planted.’ This is a realm where state-ofthe-art design and expert circus skills meld with old-fashioned camaraderie, and a crucial element of surprise. As Rack says: ‘In Bianco, you don’t know what is going to happen above you, below you, around you… this is wraparound, 360-degree theatre.’ Arwa Haider is a London-based freelance music and culture writer. She is currently finishing her first novel.
Bianco runs from Wed 23 Nov 2016 –Sun 22 Jan 2017. Suitable for all ages. 3

Why do you think peop le need heroes? It’s a challenging world we live in, more so than eve rI think personally. We ne ed role models to show us tha t in spite of these challen ges we face, we can not only survive, but truly flourish and achieve wonderful things. We need more present-day heroe s like Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King. There fee ls a real

How has your id ea of what a hero is changed throughout your life? Growing up I star ted to understand that there were imperfections an d weaknesses at the heart of ev ery character, and a traditiona l sense of the hero, leaping fro m one victory to the next withou t fear, was fiction. This mak es heroism a rarer beast, but more amazing when I do see it.

There are too man y heroes now. We confuse those that are victims, are su ffering and overcoming adve rsity, with heroes. There ca n be huge courage in conq uering illness,

‘There is no other gallery like Hayward Gallery, either in London or in Britain’ © Gautier Deblonde
Antony Gormley is one of the pre-eminent British sculptors of his generation. His 2007 solo exhibition, Blind Light, at Hayward Gallery was also his first major showing in a public gallery in London. A year on from (temporarily) closing its doors for a much needed refurbishment, Antony shares his thoughts on Hayward Gallery as part of our Let The Light In campaign.
An exhibition showcasing artwork produced in the UK’s prisons, secure hospitals and immigration removal centres, and by ex-offenders in the community. The display includes painting, music, writing and ceramics as well as traditional prison crafts such as matchstick modelling. The 2016 exhibition has been curated by writer and dub poet Benjamin Zephaniah who has selected from over 6,000 artworks submitted to the 2016 Koestler Awards. Spirit Level at Royal Festival Hall, 10am – 11pm

SATURDAY 15 OCTOBER – SUNDAY 8 JANUARY ONE DAY, SOMETHING HAPPENS
On its architecture ‘It’s a unique and extraordinary resource. I think of it as a concentrating chamber. The whole building is made like a skull. Cast concrete that integrates its breathing and if you like, its view of the world. Where it has windows, they are very particular. How it relates to the outer world is very particular.’
Towner Gallery, Eastbourne, entry free
On Hayward Gallery’s sculpture terraces ‘I think the great thing about where Hayward Gallery is, is that it allows you to engage with London at large. And the marvellous thing about those three sculpture terraces is that they allow you to look on London itself as a representation, as a project, as a made landscape. Rather than having to make a painting of it, you can actually see the thing itself.’

The exhibition premiers a major new threechannel video installation, Unearthing the Banker’s Bones, Bones, one of eight works commissioned for the Arts Council Collection’s 70th anniversary. Bluecoat, School Lane, Liverpool, entry free
On Hayward Gallery ‘Hayward Gallery is a unique and wonderful venue for London. There’s a sense in which it doesn’t just occupy its site, it owns it. It digs itself in as part of the bank of the Thames, and as such, there is no other gallery like it, either in London or Britain.’
An exhibition that explores a kind of everyday theatricality. Jennifer Higgie’s fascinating selection of works – from the Arts Council Collection as well as the Towner Gallery Art Collection – teases out common themes across the decades: work, introspection and individuality, joy and loneliness. Featuring works by artists ranging from Walter Sickert, Lucian Freud and David Hockney to Lynette Yiadom-Boakye.
On Event Horizon ‘The idea of Event Horizon was that you could offer people the city again, with the catalysts of these small life-sized body forms that were on the ground and then on the skyline, and invite them to look at the conversation between buildings, and think about this place, whether they were visitors or London was their home.’

On the refurbishment of Hayward Gallery ‘I am so glad that this has happened, that Hayward Gallery is being respected, that its original rooflights are being returned to it. The distinction between fully enclosed spaces and spaces that will be irradiated by natural light is going to be restored. That its unique material and mass is going to be preserved for generations to come.’ You can help us Let The Light In to Hayward Gallery and restore it for future generations.
