SOUTHBANK CENTRE: AN INTERNATIONAL CENTRE FOR THE ARTS

This month WOW – Women of the World opens for the seventh year in London; thousands of women, girls, boys and men come to wrestle with the complexities of gender equality and revel in the growing number of artistic projects by women. WOW has now spread across the UK and the globe – Bradford and Kathmandu, Hull and Melbourne, Chester and Karachi. Seventeen countries, five continents and expanding very quickly. But Southbank Centre has many other national and international projects in all areas of our work. Have a look on the website to see how many communities we are part of.

Supporting Southbank Centre

MAKING SOUTHBANK CENTRE GO ROUND Southbank Centre is the largest arts centre in the UK, welcoming millions of visitors every year to enjoy art, music and performance, hear talks and debates and take part in workshops and courses. Half of our events are available to the public for free. But keeping the lights on, the doors open and the world’s greatest artists on site takes more help than you might think. Southbank Centre’s supporters are a group of people who believe that art has the power to help change society for the better. They help fund our work, from the gamelan to the roof garden.

‘I really enjoy my involvement with Southbank Centre. I have seen some of the best musicians in the world here this year.’ Classical Music Patron

OUR ARTISTIC PROGRAMME

Founded by Southbank Centre’s Artistic Director Jude Kelly in 2011, Women of the World festival honours the achievements of women and girls and tackles the challenges they face in today’s world. Creating a space in the heart of London where everyone can debate important issues and share stories, it receives a passionately enthusiastic response every year. The overwhelming demand for the festival has seen it grow into a national and international network, bringing inspiration and change to women and men around the world.

There were 5,700 events at Southbank Centre last year, including classical music, gigs, dance and performance, literature and spoken word, and visual art.

Supporters make possible WOW events such as speed mentoring for girls at secondary school, enabling them to expand their horizons by meeting role models from across the professions.

Our year-round programme of festivals brings together worldclass art and current debate for a global audience. This year, our 16 festivals include Nordic Matters, offering new insights into creativity and culture in the Nordic countries, and China Changing, making connections between art in China and the UK. Imagine brings thousands of children to Southbank Centre for literary events and creative activities, while Being A Man asks what masculinity means in today’s world. Supporters help us keep 50% of our events free, so that visitors can bump into art around the site.

ROYAL FESTIVAL HALL ORGAN

Royal Festival Hall organ

‘I am delighted to be supporting the Let The Light In campaign, and to have my name engraved on one of the pyramids is a true legacy!’ Supporter QUEEN ELIZABETH HALL ROOF GARDEN

WHO ARE OUR SUPPORTERS?

One of London’s best-kept secrets, this little green oasis perched above the Thames is loved by visitors to Southbank Centre. The Queen Elizabeth Hall roof garden boasts views across London, a convenient bar, and flowerbeds bright with beautiful blooms. It’s looked after by Grounded EcoTherapy, a group of gardeners who have experienced homelessness.

Up to £300 Our ‘Individuals can make a difference’ group gives to five key projects at Southbank Centre.

Supporters have assisted us in caring for the garden over the winter.

With its 7,866 pipes, Royal Festival Hall’s organ is an impressive sight, taking up the full width of the stage. This year, it’s put through its paces as part of Southbank Centre’s festival Belief & Beyond Belief, which presents art inspired by spirituality, science and the human search for meaning. For centuries, the organ has filled churches with music expressing the human relationship with the divine. In concert performances, it resounds with repertoire from Bach to improvised movie soundtracks. Supporters enable us to bring the music of the organ to new listeners, sharing this extraordinary instrument with young and old alike.

£300 – £2,500 The Artists’ Circle, the Director’s Circle, and the Artistic Directors’ Circle make up our Supporters Circles. £5,000 plus Our Patrons support Women of the World festival (WOW Gamechangers), Hayward Gallery (The Curatorial Salon) and Southbank Centre’s world-class concerts (Classical Music Patrons).

WOW - Women of the World

WHO RUNS THE WORLD? What does Brexit mean for women? How do women get elected? Will the next generation of girls bear the brunt of climate change? Who are the women crossing borders? This spring, our festival WOW – Women of the World tackles the most pressing questions about women’s lives today, from the experiences of migrant women to the female face of activism. For six days, Royal Festival Hall is packed with talks, workshops and performances for women, girls, and the men and boys who support them, from the people on the front line of the struggle for equality. We asked some of our expert speakers to share their insights into the challenges women and girls face, and their hopes for the future.

Fatima Manji Channel 4 newsreader

Women are one group among many who have felt the impact of recent political events. How can we best support each other in changing times? There has been some recognition that women of colour face both racism and sexism. We now need to build on these conversations and translate them into action – whether that is in solidarity by speaking out in support of a marginalised group, by forming alliances at protests or sometimes just by listening.

Reni Eddo-Lodge Writer and journalist After a tumultuous 2016, what would you say is the impact of recent political events on women? We’ve learnt that hard-won rights are not static, and we have to keep showing up in order to defend them.

What would you personally like to do to help improve women’s lives this year? For me it’s going to be about continuing to expose injustice and unfairness through my journalism, whether that is sensitively telling the story of a sexual assault survivor, trying to get answers for a bereaved mother or highlighting the difficulties faced by female refugees. Fatima leads a discussion of intersectionality and Muslim women on Saturday 11 March

Women are one group among many who have felt the impact of recent political events. How can we best support each other in changing times? By looking after each other and looking out for each other. Care is chronically devalued in society, but we’re not machines. Allow yourself to rest and recuperate; there will always be someone else to take up the baton. Reni introduces her new book, ‘Why I’m no longer talking to white people about race’ on Saturday 11 March

Catherine Mayer Co-founder of the Women’s Equality Party

Lydia X Z Brown Disability activist

After a tumultuous 2016, what would you say is the impact of recent political events on women? If there was any silver lining to 2016, it was that it punctured the idea that we are moving steadily towards a gender-equal world. Instead we see that not only can progress be halted; it can also be reversed. Some of the rights and protections enjoyed by women are under concerted attack.

Women are one group among many who have felt the impact of recent political events. How can we best support each other in changing times? Focus on building and healing in our own communities while building stronger relationships outside of and between communities. Recognize that we all have the capacity to harm, that we are all imperfect and learning, that we are all complicit in other oppression in varying degrees, and that we are all responsible to constantly work to do better and to be better.

What would you personally like to do to improve women’s lives this year? I will keep working to bring new voices and perspectives into politics and advance our seven core objectives of equal representation, equal pay, equality through and in education, equal treatment by and in the media, shared opportunities and responsibilities in caregiving, equality in healthcare and an end to violence against women and girls. Catherine Mayer introduces her new book, Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman, on Tuesday 7 March

Jenny Jones Green Party politician

Lydia talks about fighting for disability rights on Saturday 11 March

Melanie Eusebe Executive producer of WOW and founder of the Black British Business Awards

What would you like to see happen for women in 2017? Here in the UK the issue of domestic violence is still not fully understood and properly investigated. I’d like to see misogyny classified as a hate crime so that the police, the Crown Prosecution Service, judges and juries would better recognise the damage it does to individuals and to the wider society. Jenny shares her opinion on what Brexit means for women on Friday 10 March

What would you personally like to do to improve women’s lives this year? I don’t think we can claim equality unless there is economic empowerment of women, from equal pay to equal opportunity. I will continue to be an advocate for women’s economic empowerment. I would like all women to get really comfortable about their money and know the inherent value that they bring to the market, wherever they are in their lives. Melanie explains how to get a pay rise on Friday 10 March
