SOUTHBANK CENTRE: AN INTERNATIONAL CENTRE FOR THE ARTS The energy and complexity of inner cities have always provided material for artists to make both provocative and celebratory work. Our Urban festival is an exuberant expression of street culture, from spoken word for kids to guerrilla gardening, and shows how the energy and diversity of our metropolises enrich us. Our next instalment of Belief & Beyond Belief explores the issue of politics and power and asks how religious institutions and personal faith influence the choices that society makes on the global stage. Along with talks, debates and shows, our partnership with the London Philharmonic Orchestra ensures a rich music programme is a key feature of this festival.

URBAN This month:

XX

STREET LIFE

On stage, in the recording studio and in our foyers, artists often draw inspiration from the hustle and bustle of urban life. Whether it’s Shakespeare in the 16th century or Dizzee Rascal in the 21st, generations of creative minds have been stimulated by London’s multilingual, thickly populated, always surprising streets.

Urban festival takes place from Saturday 1 – Monday 17 April.

At our Urban festival, our concrete playground is taken over by breakdancing battles, dance residencies, workshops, free family events and parties showcasing the best in street culture. Artists are joining us from the capital, cities across the country and urban centres around the world. Ahead of the festival, we asked artists and curators what they love about London and creating art in the city.

How does living in London inspire you creatively? London is a melting pot. The more diverse the opinions, the more varied and therefore interesting the results.

What do you love about choral music? It’s about teamwork. A chorus could be filled with amazingly talented musicians, but if they don’t work together, they can never live up to their full potential. Being able to blend and work together is one of the key aspects of choral singing, and it’s definitely one of my favorites.

What do you love about tap dancing? You’re not just surrounded by music; you’re contributing to it.

JUNIOR LANIYAN tap dancer

Junior showcases London’s best tap at the Tap Jam Tonic on Friday 7 April

CHLOE choral singer How does living in London inspire you creatively? Although I am predominantly a hip-hop DJ I am extremely proud that London constantly creates the next sound in dance music. There is no way you can be a DJ and not be inspired by the sounds of London.

ROD ‘SPIN DOCTOR’ GILMORE DJ

2

What track is guaranteed to get London kids on the dancefloor? Our most requested tune is by a 19-year-old guy called Silentó. It’s called ‘Watch Me’ or the Whip/Nae Nae. If you are aged over 13 you will probably hate it but the kids know all the dance moves and go nuts for it! Rod hosts an afternoon of childfriendly hip-hop, funk and disco anthems for kids aged 3 and up on Sunday 2 April

Chloe performs with the Boston Children’s Chorus as part of our Global Voices Trail on Monday 17 April

What’s your favourite thing about living in London? When places look lifeless but behind the doors something’s kicking off. London can be quite a secret city. There’s always something going on somewhere; you’ve just got to be the one to find it.

RICHARD Southbank Centre Youth Ambassador

KLOE DEAN DEAN KLOE hip-hop dancer dancer hip-hop

If you were the Mayor for the day, what changes would you make? I’d sort out the Tubes; everyone’s so dull and mute. I’d totally take over the tannoys and play some local artists to sooth the aggressive morning commuter. Richard helped plan ‘I am… An Urban Artist’ on Friday 7 April

What do you love about hip-hop dance? The music attracted me from a young age and then I discovered the movement that complemented it. I love the style; I love the artistry of it. I feel hip-hop dance connects to the music in a way that really relates to me. It’s down; it’s rugged; it’s fresh; it’s always evolving and has so much to offer.

What is the first thing you’d teach a beginner? The bounce, the downbeat, finding the rhythm with it and building from there into different steps and social grooves. And most importantly feeling the music and understanding it. Kloe Dean’s all-female hiphop dance collective Myself UK Dance Company are in residence at Urban festival from Monday 3 – Wednesday 5 April

What’s your favourite part of London? Waterloo is home to some of my favourite art spaces.

NIMMO Southbank Centre Youth Ambassador

OMAR musician

How does living in London inspire you creatively? Free art spaces mean I am able to have access to things that I ordinarily would not be able to afford. This means that I am able to indulge myself in all the forms of art that I love. Nimmo helped plan ‘I am… an Urban Artist’ on Friday 7 April

What’s your favourite part of London? Waterloo has to be my favourite spot in London, it’s a jack of all trades! Want a bird’s eye view of London on the London Eye? Come on down. Need a romantic setting for a date? Come on down. Want to listen to the sweet sounds of an orchestra one minute then kick flip on a skateboard the next? Come on down to Waterloo!

If you were the Mayor for the day, what changes would you make? If I was Mayor for a day all modes of transport would be absolutely free. There are so many hidden gems and things to experience around London, it would be a bummer to not be able to experience all these things just because your Oyster decided not to work.

JAY JAY REVLON vogue artiste If you were the Mayor of London for the day, what changes would you make? I would focus on LGBT issues like housing, drugs and mental health to name a few. What do you love about vogueing? There are no boundaries except no touching – the rest is free. What is the first thing you’d teach a beginner about vogueing? The history, but mostly that you will be rubbish at first so don’t focus on getting it ‘right’; it’s not ballet! Jay Jay leads a voguing workshop and club night on Friday 14 April

Omar appears at the Pulse Youth Platform on Sunday 9 April

Hear from our supporters Since launching our Let The Light In campaign in September 2015, over 60,000 generous supporters have played their part in refurbishing and restoring our Brutalist arts venues by making a donation, naming a seat in Queen Elizabeth Hall or Purcell Room, or buying exclusive Let The Light In jewellery. These much-loved venues have been at the heart of Southbank Centre’s 21-acre site for nearly 50 years and ahead of them re-opening in early 2018, some of our supporters explained what the venues and refurbishment project means to them: ‘Naming a seat was a great gift for my dad’s 80th birthday, and a nice way to say thank you to Southbank Centre and to help keep it around for years to come. Seeing Queen Elizabeth Hall restored to its former regal beauty, with a modern twist, will definitely be a great sight to see. I am so excited to see the end result.’ Charlotte, supporter ‘Southbank Centre has formed a vital part of my cultural life in London for many years and I wanted to give something back. By naming a seat, I feel that I am, in a small way, playing a tangible part in its future.’ Colin, supporter ‘Everything Southbank Centre stands for should be supported by anyone who cares not only about the arts, but society and community.’ Nihal Arthanayake, DJ, music journalist and presenter Play your part in restoring Hayward Gallery, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Purcell Room for the future by supporting our Let The Light In campaign today.
