APRIL

Highlights

Bernstein’s MASS weekend Generously supported by Heritage Lottery Fund, Alex Graham, Liz and Luke Mayhew and Susie Thomson From Friday 6 to Sunday 8 April, we mark the composer Leonard Bernstein’s centenary year with a performance of his radical masterpiece MASS, and a weekend of events for young people. MASS bridges the gap between classical and popular music to explore idealism, questioning and protest. Our new production is conducted by Marin Alsop and features Tony Award-winning Brazilian baritone Paulo Szot, our Associate Orchestras the National

Youth Orchestra of Great Britain (NYO) and Chineke! Juniors, and a diverse cast of dancers, vocalists and choirs from across London, a congregation of street singers, a rock band and a brass band. NYO also presents two performances inspired by Bernstein’s pioneering Young People’s Concerts: UNLEASHED, a series of lively concerts by teenagers, for teenagers.

We’re back and better than ever

Tyondai Braxton: World Premiere

Hannah Peel with Tubular Brass

Anna Meredith & Southbank Sinfonia Present ‘Varmints’

Concrete Dreams Weekend

After three years of extensive refurbishment, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Purcell Room open their doors to the public on Mon 9 April with a vibrant new programme of music, gigs, dance and late-night fun.

Composer Hannah Peel and 29-piece brass band Tubular Brass perform two unearthly works. Peel’s mysterious composition evokes an 86-year-old woman who dreams of the stars. Hear it alongside a retooling of Mike Oldfield’s iconic 1973 album.

See the world premiere of TELEKINESIS, a large-scale work for orchestra, electronics and choir by Tyondai Braxton, one of the most exciting young artists in New York today. It conjures with sci-fi film soundtracks and sonic exploration.

Genre-crossing composer Anna Meredith presents her awardwinning debut album Varmints, with her band and the Southbank Sinfonia orchestra. She is described by Pitchfork as ‘one of the most innovative voices in British music’.

Stewart Lee’s most successful full-length show ever has toured sold-out theatres for nearly two years. Join him as he performs the show for the very last time. When it’s gone it’s gone.

Peer into the rich history of Southbank Centre’s 1960s buildings, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Purcell Room, over a long weekend. Take in music and performance exploring our heritage, from David Bowie to jazz music and Asian dance.
