Imagine Children’s Festival
IMAGINE: A NORDIC CHILDHOOD
This year’s Imagine Children’s Festival takes place as part of Nordic Matters, a year of events inspired by the Nordic way of life. Many of the 5.5 million children who live in the Nordic countries are said to be the happiest in the world. In 2013, UNICEF listed Norway, Iceland, Finland and Sweden as four of the top five places on the planet to be a child. Some of the Nordic countries top the charts when it comes to education, while others are considered the best places to be a mother. But what’s it really like to grow up Nordic? The region is known for its efforts to ensure social equality, using high taxes to support family life and high-quality education. It’s possible to identify a typical Nordic childhood, involving subsidised child-care, free schooling, informal classrooms and plenty of social 2
activities. Many of the youngest Nordic citizens are independent (a quarter of Danish kids aged 7–14 have part-time jobs) and well informed (Iceland’s children recently helped rewrite the country’s constitution.) Find out more about their lives at this year’s Imagine Children Festival, which takes place from Thursday 9 until Sunday 19 February.
‘We like living in Norway because in the summer we go out in the big kayak on the lake by our house, and try to catch a fish.’ Hannes, 5, Emil, 3 and Yannick, 3

School days The Nordic education system is famous, mostly because of Finn ish and Danish schools, rated the best in the world (in contrast, Norweg ian schools are rated as average, while Sweden’s scores have declined over the last few years). Across the regi on, children don’t go to school unti l the age of 6 or 7. Most people’s idea of the Nordic school system is based on the Finnish model, which is largely funded by taxes and involves short day s, in-class assessment rather than exams, small, mixed-ability clas ses and free school meals (Finland was the first country in the world to offer these). Pupils aren’t asked to wear uniforms and teachers are addressed by their first names.
‘In Finland I love that Santa visits everyone in person to bring presents at Christmas. Santa is from Korvatunturi in Finland.’ Peppi, 8
‘The best thing about growing up Nordic is that there is a proper winter with lots of snow.’
Lotta, 10
Nordic playtime The Nordic countries conside r play an important way to learn. Lots of children belong to clubs and societies. In Sweden, many chil dren travel to the nor th of the country each winter to go skiing or iceskating, while summer offers the chance to swim in lakes or the sea. Some of the Nordic countries have a more indulgent idea of fun – in Iceland, there’s a weekly ‘can dy day when pick and mix sweet are sold ’ at a discount to kids.
Seen and heard Paying attention to children’s rights is not a new idea in the Nordic countries. Sweden was the first country in the world to ban smacking, shortly followed by Finland and Norway. These days, the Nordic Council of Ministers refer to the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child to make sure that children are treated fairly (in Iceland, Finland and Norway, the Convention has become a part of national law). Greenland’s Prime Minister declared 2016 the year of the child, and that year more than a thousand children in the country learned about children’s rights.
We are family Norway, Iceland, Finland, Sweden and Denmark are rated the top five places in the world to be a mother. It’s no wonder when you consider that, for example, childcare in Sweden costs five times less than in Britain. Many Nordic parents are entitled to lots of parental leave; Swedish parents are allotted 480 days for each child. Sweden was also the first country in the world to offer paternity leave (90% of fathers now take it) and along with Norway and Iceland, offers a quota of leave that fathers have to use or lose. In the Faroe Islands, the extended family is very important to a child’s upbringing, while in traditional Inuit society in Greenland, neighbouring families can share responsibility for a child’s care.

Imagine’s workshop at Evelina Hospital School
IMAGINARY FRIENDS
A robot with rosy cheeks. An ant wearing a carrot for a hat. A smiling mermaid. This winter, a group of children in a hospital ward puzzled over the possibilities as they put crayon to paper to draw the creatures of their imaginations. This year’s Imagine Children’s Festival is introduced by a raggle-taggle rabble of monsters, popping up around the Southbank Centre site to let you know you’re entering a festival fuelled by kids’ wildest dreams. In keeping with the festival’s Nordic theme, they were brought to life by Swedish illustrator Maja Sten, but she didn’t do it alone – the original creations were conjured up by the kids of Evelina Hospital School.

If Maja Sten’s colourful, folkish designs seem familiar, you might have previously seen her work in a branch of IKEA or between the glamorous pages of Japanese Vogue. Her quirky characters and enchanting forest scenes reimagine the landscape and aesthetic of her homeland, bringing Nordic style to everything from wallpaper designs to fine art exhibitions.
However, for this project, she catered to an exceptionally broad range of influences, as ten children got busy thinking up the best monsters they could muster, inspired by fairytales, superheroes, creepy crawlies and their dinner plates. The class is part of Evelina’s Hospital School, a school in Evelina Children’s Hospital that provides daily education for children aged two to 19. The school caters for over 1,500 students every year, keeping kids busy and helping them continue their education while they undergo treatment. Evelina Children’s Hospital is one of only two specialist children’s hospitals in London. Caring for over 55,000 young patients in 2016, the hospital provides one in five of the UK’s kidney transplants in children. At Southbank Centre’s workshop, Maja asked the children to think about imaginary friends, and what sort of creatures they’d like to have as invisible companions. At Imagine, the monsters will be able to take shape and run free, making friends with thousands of children and vouching for the power of the class’s creativity.
