HIGHLIGHTS JANUARY 2016 WINTER AT SOUTHBANK CENTRE WITH NATWEST

A new year always feels full of creative possibility. There’s a wealth of art and performance for everyone to enjoy at Southbank Centre, but you might not know that behind the scenes we strive to support those seeking to explore and develop their talent. This month, some of our associated artists are taking up residence at Southbank Centre to work in partnership over several days. It is an opportunity for them to have the space and time they need to embark on new projects, and while our visitors won’t observe this process taking place, everyone will be able to enjoy the work that will eventually emerge. Returning once again to Southbank Centre, their London home, the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra flies the flag for young people who want to make classical music part of their lives. The product of Venezuela’s groundbreaking El Sistema programme, the orchestra is made up of musicians who dared to turn that aspiration into reality.

From Slava’s Snowshow to our free New Year’s Day ceilidh, there’s something for everyone. Until Sunday 17 January. See pages 4 – 5.

SIMÓN BOLÍVAR SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

We’re also looking forward to an appearance from Baaba Maal, whose brilliance has enriched many of our festivals, from Being A Man to Africa Utopia. Presenting new music from his recently released album, his performance is an inspiring way to ring in 2016.

This month: Collision

IT TAKES TWO Artists inspire each other this month at Southbank Centre Jagdish Mistry and Gauri Sharma Tripathi perform as part of Collision Friday Lunch at Southbank Centre – January 2010 © Jon Smalldon

What do you get when you cross a percussionist with a beatboxer? Or a poet with a filmmaker? Behind the scenes at Southbank Centre this month we’re finding out with the return of our six-day artist residency, Collision. We’ve invited a group of artists associated with Southbank Centre to choose a creative partner and work together for just under a week, sharing ideas from different art forms to create something new.

Holly Blakey is a choreographer whose work pops up in ads for Paul Smith and Gucci, and enlivens music videos for artists such as Florence and the Machine. She has chosen to work with composer Mica Levi. What do you like about Mica? She’s very conscientious whilst making her views clear, and she will often choose to go against what’s expected. What’s the ideal way to approach a creative project? Fearlessly. What do you think Mica will bring to the collaboration? Most likely something I haven’t thought to factor in.

2

Collision has only been held once before, in 2010, bringing together artistic pairings including composer Mica Levi and cellist Olly Coates, and visual artist Jeremy Deller with writer Anna Minton. Now it’s back to spark new inspirations and set up projects that might otherwise never take place. We asked some of the artists taking part about creativity, collaboration and what they’re expecting...

Composer Mica Levi is known for her band Micachu and the Shapes and her award-winning soundtrack for the film Under the Skin. She has chosen to work with choreographer Holly Blakey. Did you know Holly before Collision? I worked with Holly on a Hannah Perry art work called Horoscopes (Déjà Vu) [which was shown at the Serpentine Gallery]. I couldn’t believe how much Holly and the dancers got together, and so fast and well. I admire lots of things about Holly’s work, but I enjoy the energy and repetition. When have you collaborated before on a creative project, and what was the result? I often do; the results are mixed... Which pair of creative collaborators most inspire you? Ginger Baker and Art Blakey’s drum battle [artblakey.com/battles].

Image credits: Micachu & Chopper by Sasha Cake St ewart Laing © Tommy Ga-Ken Wa

Pamela Carter is a playwright and dramaturg whose work includes Lines, Almost Near and Paul Bright’s Confessions of a Justified Sinner, plus collaborations with The National Theatre of Scotland and Malmö Opera House. She has chosen to work with director and designer Stewart Laing. What do you admire about Stewart’s work? The worlds he creates for audiences are so beautifully constructed; they can look astonishing, be challenging, and yet feel effortless. Did you know him before Collision? I first met Stewart over ten years ago when I taught on a performance practice course in Glasgow and invited him to run a workshop with my students. It was an entirely selfish act as I’d wanted to meet him for a while. Which pair of creative collaborators most inspire you? Morrissey and Marr? Ulay and Abramović? Romeo and Claudia Castellucci? I’ve been lucky enough to work with the artists Goldin+Senneby a few times; they’re great: brilliant, rigorous, and excellent fun.

Stewart Laing directs and designs theatre and opera, for companies including Scottish Opera, Malmö Opera House, The Royal Shakespeare Company and the Almeida, and for the West End. He has chosen to work with playwright and dramaturg Pamela Carter.

London-based artist Mark Titchner works in media including wall drawings, video and installation. His artworks are often inspired by impersonal, public language. He has chosen to work with drummer Charles Hayward. What do you admire about Charles’ work? As well as the incredible back catalogue of music Charles has produced through the years, I’ve always felt a very strong connection to his lyrics which have been a big inspiration for my own works with text. What’s the ideal way to approach a creative project? With nothing to lose and an open mind. What are you hoping to create together? A beautiful challenging mess.

Drummer Charles Hayward is a founding member of experimental rock band This Heat. He has chosen to work with visual artist Mark Titchner. What do you admire about Mark’s work? I’m fascinated by words in music, songs, and Mark seems to be looking at a similar thing by placing text in abstracted visual settings, so that tension is immediately attractive and interesting for me. When did you meet him? I have only recently met Mark, in a coffee bar in Deptford. Seems a good bloke. What are you hoping to create together? Maybe some public service announcements, a room where noise and colour overwhelm words and meaning.

What’s the ideal way to approach a creative project? For me conversation is the crux of collaboration. I sometimes describe my theatre company in Glasgow, Untitled Projects, as a ‘talking shop’ – we develop work through hours and hours of formal and informal conversation. What are you hoping to create with Pamela? We have both recently become obsessive about the French writer and filmmaker Marguerite Duras. I had been aware of her as a playwright and a screenwriter – but she also directed 19 radical movies from her own screenplays – an astonishing achievement. So I think that Pamela and I will be looking at the possibilities of reimagining her work as performance. Which pair of creative collaborators most inspire you? I’m in Berlin right now – and I saw The Brothers Karamazov at the Volksbühne at the weekend – directed by Frank Castorf and designed by Bert Neumann. I’ve been following their collaboration for years [but] Karamazov was particularly poignant as Bert Neumann died earlier this year – so the show marked the end of their work together. 3
