SATURDAY 5 - SUNDAY 6 NOVEMBER

FULL PROGRAMME 2016 #WOWBRADFORD @WOW_BRADFORD @WOWTWEETUK

WOW BRADFORD 2016 WOW WEEKEND Saturday 5 - Sunday 6 November WOW – Women of the World is a festival that celebrates women and girls, and takes a frank look at what’s stopping them from achieving their potential. WOW is the biggest gathering of women and girls across the globe, and I’m so pleased that Bradford is part of this story for change. We want all of the many things that are spoken about at WOW Bradford to inspire action, and I invite everyone to the Action Station to write a pledge on the action you’ll take after being here this weekend. I started WOW at London’s Southbank Centre in 2010, but in that short time it has grown to over 20 WOWs across five continents, with over a million women and girls and hundreds of partners involved. From Pakistan to Finland and from New York’s Apollo Theatre in Harlem, to Katherine in the Australian outback, WOW allows women and girls to share the common aims and challenges of gender equality, and debate solutions together.

Bradford is the first of five cities to run a WOW festival with support from Spirit of 2012, and promises to be an animated and far reaching celebration that does not fear broaching difficult and challenging subjects. Taking the city as inspiration, I know the programme is uniquely ‘Bradford’, and all the more powerful because of the many girls and women who’ve come together to make this happen. I hope you’ll join us over the weekend – I look forward to meeting you. Jude Kelly CBE Artistic Director & Founder WOW - Women of the World Festival Jude Kelly

WOW Bradford will be a place to connect, laugh, challenge and explore ideas. We hope it will also be a place that inspires action and change for our city. The first of a threeyear programme of festivals funded by Spirit, this is a brilliant opportunity to see how WOW Bradford inspires women and girls and creates connections and projects that grow through and beyond the festivals. WOW Bradford has been possible because of the hearts and minds of many women and girls – every brilliant person who attended the think-ins, our incredible volunteer team led by Saba Ghetty, the WOWsers who give us all tremendous hope, Rahila Hussain with her administrative finesse and Aina Khan who is a press and marketing genius. We look forward to seeing all of you at the first WOW Bradford in Kala Sangam Arts Centre and can’t wait to see what it sparks in us all. Evie Manning, WOW Bradford Programmer

SPIRIT OF 2012

WOW SPIRIT WOW Spirit is delivering nine WOW festivals in five cities across the UK over the next two years (one in 2016, three in 2017 and five in 2018). It’s a Southbank Centre initiative funded by Spirit of 2012. WOW Spirit will reduce barriers to social cohesion in these areas by enhancing cultural infrastructure, opening up access to resources and creating new opportunities for female leaders. Each festival is based on ideas raised at a series of planning sessions called ‘think-ins’. Everyone is welcome at these to share their ideas and suggestions and make sure that WOW looks at important local issues. Building new festivals across the UK allows women, men, girls and boys (including some of the most marginalised voices in society) to get actively involved in their local communities. As programmers, volunteers and participants, they can help create a fairer, happier society.

@spiritof2012 Spirit of 2012 is a funding charity, established with £47m from the Big Lottery. They fund partners that provide opportunities in sports, physical activity, the arts, volunteering and social action. Spirit funds projects that empower people to get involved in events that spark change for people and communities. They work to promote wellbeing and social cohesion and to challenge limiting perceptions of disability.

WOW Bradford is supported by Bradford Metropolitan District Council.

ALL WELCOME WOW is a movement that welcomes all - women, girls, men and boys and those who identify as non-binary. We encourage everyone to reach out and bring dads, brothers, grandmas, neighbours, friends, children, sisters, mothers to make WOW Bradford a festival that works towards a gender equal future for us all.
