he U.S. teacher shortage could be getting worse. A March 2022 survey from the National Education Association (NEA) showed that more than half of teachers (55%) intend to leave the profession earlier than they planned, and that was before the elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. “90% of teachers are saying they’re really thinking about what happened in Uvalde and what that means for them,” American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten said on Yahoo

EDITORIAL A Ballot Question That Should Be Passed

I

t should come as no surprise to anyone at this point that there are elected officials that seem to have forgotten that they work for the citizens they were hired to represent. We’re reminded of this once again with the recent bill passed by the Massachusetts State Legislature, vetoed by the governor, then overridden by the legislators granting driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants. Now, these officials know full well, that even in liberal Massachusetts, the majority of voters are opposed to this

practice. But the politicians, under pressure from radical activists passed it anyway. And what does this tell us? Two possibilities come to mind: One, they couldn’t care less what the voters want or that this legislation rewards illegal behavior or, two, they are intimidated by the ‘progressive’ element in their (democrat) party and the boisterous, ever threatening illegal immigration lobbyists. And maybe these elected officials have the attitude that if the people they are supposed to represent don’t like it – tough, there is

nothing we can do about it. But they might find out differently come this November. It comes in the form of a ballot question/referendum that a new political action committee is working on. Maureen Maloney and Kevin Dube and what is said to be legions of citizens across the state ready to assist, will begin work on gathering signatures to get the question on the ballot this fall, which if passed, will repeal the law that would grant illegals driver’s licenses. Politicians in Massachusetts don’t much like

ballot questions, because it gives the people the ability to overrule them and toss out bad laws. Voters, not just in Massachusetts, but nationwide are in no mood this year to put up with any more nonsense from entrenched politicians that disregard the will of the people. And 2022 might just be the year that even the Bay State will rise up and say ‘enough’. Few people are fooled regarding one of the main reasons to give illegals driver’s licenses by activists. The goal to eventually get them registered to vote in future

elections has long been the suspected plan. When the canvassers go out into the suburbs, the rural areas and yes, even into the cities, with petitions collecting signatures to get the repeal effort onto the coming ballot, there is a good bet they will be well received. Maureen Maloney’s son was killed by a drunk driver in 2011 who was in this country illegally. This effort is a passionate one for her and other families that have suffered similar loss. The law isn’t scheduled to take effect until July of next year. The effort to stop it before it does should meet with success because it’s the right thing to do.

ith all the issues facing our great country such as (where to begin) skyrocketing prices on fuel, food, utilities, building supplies, bare shelves everywhere, shortages of baby formula, inflation worse than it has been for 50 years, criminals overwhelming our open borders, crime rates soaring and pretty much the whole world laughing at us now, there are those who will swear that the Biden Regime and the democrats in DC are doing just fine and our country is thriving. I’ll give some of them the benefit of the doubt and assume that when they say these things, they just don’t realize how foolish they sound to the overwhelming number of Americans who can clearly see what’s happening to us. “Biden didn’t say that. And if he did, he didn’t mean it. And if he did, you don’t understand it. And if you did, it’s not a big deal, and if it is, it’s taken out of context, and if it wasn’t, others have done it, and if they haven’t, at least mean Orangeman gone.” This quote is from a meme going viral across the nation and much of the rest of the world. This is what people who are still, actually insisting that Joe Biden is doing a good job sound like to normal people. Now, in a desperate effort to distract from all the real problems mentioned above facing the country, the clown show, or so-called January 6th Hearings are taking place and it’s being run, live on all the liberal news networks. The number of people actually paying attention to this has dropped off dramatically from the first day, not that the numbers were that great anyway. Once people who tuned in saw for themselves that it was just another Democrat Party/news media witch hunt to get Trump, most of the relatively few that originally tuned in, tuned out. Americans have more important things to do than have their intelligence insulted. There was no debate. It was all one sided. Wild accusations were and are being made with no actual proof. That ridiculous committee was even caught altering the tapes of the event to remove Donald Trump’s statements. The press and the offending Democrats apparently still think the public is stupid and wouldn’t notice. They have discredited and embarrassed themselves

from the opening statements. Financial experts and some top economists have now run the numbers and their calculations are not good. It is estimated that the average family will now be paying, that is if they can even afford it, an additional $5,520 per year because of inflated prices on just about everything and it will get much worse if something isn’t done. Yet, instead of attempting to deal with this and bring relief toAmericans, the Democrats in congress are still, after 6 long years of this nonsense, spending their time, their efforts and our tax dollars, trying to get Donald Trump. This is why they will be washed away in the next two elections. Americans have had enough. Ah, but there actually is an additional issue on their agenda and it’s another attempt to disarm law abiding citizens. Here’s the plan: The crime rate is soaring in major cities, because the left wingers in charge in many cases have hamstrung the police. In many places, they have stripped large amounts of funding from the police budgets and have limited the ability of the cops to do their jobs and enforce the law. In addition, violent criminals have been turned loose by the thousands to continue their reign of terror on innocent people. Now, in the meantime, the liberals in power are frantically working to take gun rights away from law obeying citizens, which in a lot of places leaves them defenseless since law enforcement has either been drastically cut or limited in what they can do anymore to protect. So, reduced police protection or none at all and an attempt to deny people the right and the tools (guns) to defend themselves and their families - think about this if you will. What to do? Become prisoners in our own homes because the criminals will be the only ones with guns? Or tell the gun grabbing politicians where to go if they even try to disarm the people? The answer is simple for most Americans, and it’s don’t even try it. This isn’t Europe or Canada. It won’t be tolerated here. And in answer to the question being asked by hand wringing liberals as to why anyone needs certain types of firearms, let me answer for myself. The year is 2022, not 1812 and the bad guys are no longer carrying muskets.

Window Into The State House

Window Into The State House provides our readers a synopsis of important issues of interest, past and current, that are being proposed, debated or acted upon by the Massachusetts Legislature. Many issues that are not related to local city government services are acted upon and have a direct impact on daily life. They are tax policy, transportation infrastructure, judicial appointments, social services and health, as well as higher education. We will excerpt reports from the gavel-to-gavel coverage of House and Senate sessions by news sources focused on this important aspect of our lives. These sources include a look ahead at the coming week in state government and summaries and analyses of the past week, re-caps of a range of state government activity, as well as links to other news.

-- Top court wipes gig worker question off ballot In a bombshell decision, the Supreme Judicial Court on Tuesday struck down a proposed ballot question that would have allowed app-based companies like Uber and Lyft to continue to classify their drivers as independent contractors in exchange for some added benefits. The justices ruled that the question was ineligible for the ballot under the state Constitution because it combined unrelated subjects. The ruling eliminates what promised to be one of the most expensive ballot campaigns in state history and shines a brighter spotlight on Attorney General Maura Healey’s ongoing lawsuit against Uber and Lyft alleging that they have violated state labor laws by not treating drivers as full-time employees. The Globe’s Matt Stout writes that it also frees up many of the same labor organizations and advocates fighting the gig worker question to devote their time, resources and energy into passing a separate ballot initiative to raise taxes on highincome earners. Incidentally, the court could issue a ruling challenging how voters will be presented with the so-called “million-

aire’s tax” question any day now. -- MORE....GBH News’s Adam Reilly and Craig LeMoult report on what next for the industry, including its hope that the Legislature could intervene and consider a bill to accomplish what the ballot question sought out to do. That would be a steep hill to climb, however, with Democratic Party leadership, including the two leading candidates for governor, all opposed to classifying driver’s as independent contractors. -- Advancing bills exclude EastWest rail authority, Hynes sale While we covered the ARPA funding controversy, SHNS’s Chris Lisinski has more on the pair of long-term borrowing bills that advanced from committees on Tuesday, including a separate $9.75 billion transportation infrastructure bond bill designed to take full advantage of the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. That bill so far still not contain any authorization for a new rail authority sought by Gov. Charlie Baker, U.S. Rep. Richard Neal and the western Mass. delegation to oversee an expansion of passenger rail service to Springfield and Pittsfield, and

lawmakers are also holding out for now on giving Baker the green light to put the Hynes Convention Center up for sale. -- Pressley votes against added security for SCOTUS families U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley was one of 27 Democrats - and the only member of the Massachusetts delegation - to vote against a bill that passed the House Tuesday to expand protections for the families of Supreme Court justices, reports the Herald’s Rick Sobey. The bill’s passage comes after the arrest last week of an armed man outside the home of Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Pressley said that while many high ranking officials, including Supreme Court judges, already have protection the patients and providers of reproductive health services that will be impacted if the court overturns Roe v. Wade do not. “It is inexcusable that we continue to place a hierarchy on people’s safety and lives,” Pressley said. -- Mental health money caught up in power struggle With the House is poised to take up mental health legislation

June 16, 2022

Wednesday to address a worsening post-pandemic crisis, the Globe’s Jessica Bartlett reports on how Gov. Charlie Baker and the Legislature have been bickering for months over how an historic investment of federal dollars in the behavioral health system should be spent. Baker back in December warned that the Legislature’s plan to create a commission to oversee $198 million in funding would create unnecessary delays, and yet here we are in June. -- Conditions ripen for action on safe consumption sites Rising overdose deaths and shifting political winds could be conspiring to create the climate needs to legalize safe consumption sites in an effort to reduce fatal drug overdoses and connect users to health services. The Globe’s Felice Freyer reports that advocates are feeling optimistic that holdouts might reconsider following last week’s report that overdose deaths spiked 9 percent in 2021. Plus, with an opponent like Gov. Charlie Baker leaving office, a U.S. attorney who threatened to prosecute no longer there and the prospects strong for an ally to win the governor’s office, the tides could be turning. “This has been going on for years now. We’re all fed up and impatient waiting for the political wheels to turn,” said Carl Sciortino, a former state lawmaker and executive vice president of external relations for Fenway Health.

SEN. COLLINS SUPPORTS INFRASTRUCTURE BILL Legislation would Send Approximately $15 million Investment to the City of Boston

S

enator Nick Collins joined his colleagues in the Massachusetts State Senate in passing An Act Financing Improvements to Municipal Roads and Bridges under Chapter 90 of the Massachusetts General Laws. Chapter 90 is a program established by the Commonwealth allowing cities and towns to apply for needed infrastructure improvement funding, and the City of Boston is set to receive

nearly $15 million in new infrastructure investment with this bill. In addition, the Senate authorized a further $150 million towards additional grant programs, aimed at further municipal transportation development projects. These investments include a further $30 million for the Commonwealth’s small bridge repair program, $30 million for the Complete Streets program, which allows municipalities

to redesign intersections and pedestrian crossings, $25 million for grants increasing access to mass transit, and $25 million for local bus programs. “While I know these funds can be put to good use immediately in Boston, I am confident that the legislation will equip our municipalities with the resources to improve access to high quality transportation,” said Senator Collins.

Some conservative politicians have proposed increasing police presence in schools or even arming teachers. Weingarten said she is strongly against this idea. Many however disagree, including the rank-and-file teachers. Weingarten was also adamant about the fact that the common sense gun safety rules she’s hoping for are not “about taking away guns from responsible gun owners.” “The smearing of saying that we’re going against the Second Amendment, that’s not anything that I’ve heard from the majority of both my members and the conversations around the country,” she said. ‘Can we get the politics out of the classroom?’ There has been a profound teacher shortage in the U.S. for quite some time, and gun violence isn’t the only factor. Politics in general have made its way into the classroom, affecting how many teachers communicate with their students. For example, in states like Texas and Florida, many books are banned from being taught while critical race theory — the understanding of America’s history as seen through the lens of historical racism — is currently prohibited from being discussed in the

classroom in 17 states, according to Education Week. The disagreement on this issue is vociferous to say the least. “Can we get the politics out of the classroom?” Weingarten said. “Teachers and parents want to work together. Trust us to actually teach kids what we need to do instead of banning books and censoring every word we say. That would help.” Fortunately, the pressure of politics is critical according to parents. According to Weingarten, some teachers are unsure over whether or not they’re allowed to explain to their students what the racial motivations were behind the shooting in Buffalo, New York. “How do I not teach about the Buffalo manifesto that kid did?” she said. “If you trust us enough to hold guns, trust us enough to do the stuff that we have been trained to do.” In this case, it may be important to educated the students to the frame of mind of the deranged killer. The coronavirus pandemic has been a component of political debate as well and, trickled down to teachers, as many states debated whether or not to resume in-person learning. According to

the NEA report, 91% of educators cited pandemic stress as a reason why they’re considering another profession. Additionally, there are 600,000 fewer teachers in the U.S. today than prior to the pandemic. “We have about 300,000 teachers who actually leave every single year, many before retirement,” Weingarten said. “It’s not just about new teachers. It’s also a retention issue … we need to retain teachers. And we’re facing a retention crisis as well as a recruitment crisis.” Low pay isn’t helping the situation. The average entry level teacher salary in the U.S. is $41,388, according to Salary.com, as of May 2022. And according to Weingarten, for teachers who have been in the profession for a while, their pay hasn’t kept up with inflation or being able to raise a family. “So, it’s really a matter of, what are the conditions?” she said. “Do we have low enough class sizes? Do we have the guidance counselors and the social workers that we need to help with emotional social issues? Do we have the pay that’s commensurate with being able to raise a family? Can we deal with student debt?”

I Was Just Thinking…

one another. Show respect to one another. Politics need not be a raging fire destroying everything in its path. And so today, at this time and in this place, let us start afresh.” Start anew and leave behind our differences for a common good. More words to heal the soul of a nation suffering from dire wounds of division. Sounded good and optimism filled the air. “To all those who supported our campaign I am humbled by the faith you have placed in us,” Biden further stated. “To all those who did not support us, let me say this: Hear me out as we move forward. Take a measure of me and my heart. And if you still disagree, so be it. That’s democracy. That’s America. The right to dissent peaceably, within the guardrails of our Republic, is perhaps our nation’s greatest strength.” Biden declared that he’d be a

“President for all Americans” and would fight just as hard for those who did not support him in the same way for those who did. Nice words-all-of-them-but would soon ring hollow as the unifier in chief’s message of unity, forgiveness, and the quest for tranquility was as short-lived as his memory. This past Tuesday in Philadelphia at the AFL-CIO (American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations) annual convention, Biden, apparently angry and yelling during his speech, attacked the MAGA crowd (again) and has recently called them the “most extreme political organization that’s existed in American history-in recent American history.” So much for noble words espousing the desire for unity when they are sadly overridden by political expediency and folly.

Teacher Shortage continued from front page

Finance Live. “It doesn’t mean they’re going to leave. It doesn’t mean they’re going to stay. But the impact has been huge across the country.” In response to the devastating shooting, a bipartisan group of 20 senators recently agreed on framework for a gun safety bill that would include enhanced background checks for those under 21 purchasing guns, funding for mental health and school safety, and state grants for red flag laws. Though he said the bill isn’t as progressive as he’d like, President Biden pledged to sign it into law, stating it would be the “most significant gun safety legislation to pass Congress in decades.” “What teachers really want is they want us to do the common sense gun safety precautions that are being talked about in Washington right now, that Governor Hochul did in New York state with the legislature just a few days ago, that GOP Governor Baker did in Massachusetts a few years ago, what the overwhelming number of Americans — Republican, Democrat, Independent — want us to do: They want something done,” Weingarten said.

Americans, and everyone needed to build towards a better future. He would be the president, a good president we needed who would lead us down the right path towards harmony. “History, faith, and reason show the way, the way of unity,” Biden said on Inauguration Day. “We can see each other not as adversaries but as neighbors. We can treat each other with dignity and respect. We can join forces, stop the shouting, and lower the temperature. For without unity, there is no peace, only bitterness and fury.” Noble words indeed. A message of Hope hopefully to unify a divided nation. “Let us listen to one another,” Biden said. “Hear one another. See

The purpose of the hearing was to provide the forum to discuss and address the issues arising out of the criminal, near criminal and nuisance activity resulting principally from the drugrelated problems along Southampton St. up to the Mass and Cass intersection by the Boston Medical Center. These issues are chronic and take up much of the human and technical bandwidths of depleted law enforcement agencies and their personnel. Incidents at Carson Beach and the JFK T station were also on the agenda. The vagrancy and loitering issues and the potential for criminal activity at both Andrew Square and JFK T stops are compounded by the influx of college and high school students especially early in the morning and at the end of the day when they travel to and from school. The Andrew Square Civic Association members in particular are doing their best to cooperate with law-enforcement to address many of these issues. The panelists did their best to put their challenges in perspective given the fact that recruiting of new law-enforcement and police officers is at an all-time low and funding is unpredictable given the political climate. In part, the hearing prompted a “we’ve got your back” sentiment expressed by the community and elected officials to the police. There were sev-

eral self-described ant-establishment activists from outside the community who attempted to disrupt the proceedings but Congressman Stephen Lynch, seeking “respect for others”, was able to forcefully and appropriately calm things down. Councilor Ed Flynn was the moderator and did his best to manage the desire by residents to speak and ask questions. He was met with pushback from some, who are concerned about the efforts to reduce police funding. He and Councilors Michael Flaherty, Erin Murphy and Frank Baker were the four votes against an effort by the Boston City Council to reduce the police budget, but which passed by a vote of 9-4. Mayor Wu, in a communication back to the Council, stated that she opposed their effort because it would cause problems in other parts of the budget. Nonetheless, the concern remained that the attitude and mood of the majority of the city council, as it is currently constructed, is heading in the wrong direction as a relates to law-enforcement and the public safety of the city of Boston. There were some in the crowd who cautioned against attempting to “arrest our way out of this problem” because it is the mental health resources and medical matters that need to be addressed. Others mentioned that the Boston Public School system has become negatively

affected overall as incidents of assaults on the campuses are escalating. State Senator Nick Collins made it a point to offer solutions to the Mass and Cass dilemma maintaining that wherever criminal activity existed, arrests were warranted. His solutions included expanding the Section 35 capability to a 24/7 program allowing family members to leverage that option to commit loved ones to possible treatment as an alternative to incarceration. He also said he would support city wide warrant sweeps to “get the bad guys off of the streets”. This was further endorsed by Flaherty, Murphy and Baker. State Representative David Biele has been working closely with the Andrew Square Civic Association and other community residents, as well as with Sen. Collins on state resources to bolster program and financial support both to the local social services agencies and law enforcement. Also in attendance was Reverend Eugene Rivers of the Ella Baker House in Dorchester and founder of the previously successful Ten-Point Coalition plan. He was in attendance to pledge his cooperation and that of his fellow clergyman to do their part to work with law-enforcement to “address the disciplinary and economic issues that underlie some of the behavior of young folks in my community”.

Martín Códax Albariño is a bright, coastal-influenced wine from Spain. It opens with notes of apple, grapefruit and apricot aromas framed by bright floral aromatics. This classically styled Albariño shines with a crisp minerality and bright acidity that carries through to a long, refreshing finish. This Spanish varietal is a favorite for warm weather Tapas and seafood dishes, especially Fruits de Mer stew. It’s also light enough for salads and its relatively low ABV, 12.5%, means that it can be enjoyed outside on warm, sunny days. This is also the best time of year for Sauvignon Blanc and few areas have as much variety, quality and consistency as New Zealand. Here are a few that are really standing out right now. The 2020 Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand, ($19.99) is made by Kevin Judd, who was the winemaker at Cloudy Bay

for many years and helped define the New Zealand Sauvignon style while there. His Greywacke wines are terrific—the ‘19 Sauvignon has impressively lengthy grapefruit, lime and pepper flavors. This brand promises to be a leader for many vintages to come and this vintage is a real stand out. The 2019 Mahi Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand, ($22.99) comes from seven different estate vineyards. The hand-picked fruit was whole-cluster pressed so that the time on skins was minimized. A portion of this juice, 7% this year, was barrelfermented in older French oak to give greater weight, though ensuring that wood is not evident on the nose. The balance of the wine was fermented cool in stainless steel to retain the fruit characters from our vineyards. 22% of the cuvee was fermented with native yeast, giving it a dryness very similar to a white Bordeaux wine.

This is also a great time of year for a good Proseco and it’s never been easier to find a quality brand than now, as the Italian government has been supporting an export campaign for this area and its wines for the last few years. SYLTBAR Premium Prosecco, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Italy, ($21.99) is a relative newcomer to the US, but definitely worth a try. Real Champagne quality, very fine and well-balanced bubbles, refreshing, clean and clear. Also, it’s Vegan and has only 49 calories per 6oz glass. Have it as an aperitif, with any summer meal or for dessert. Outstanding!

This week,

Danny shared a letter from PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan, regarding LIV Golf:

L

ast week, I reacted to the new LIV Golf tour, which has seen big names like Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson join the league by signing massive nine-digit contracts. This has rubbed some on the PGA Tour the wrong way. Rory McIlroy has been extremely outspoken against those who have jumped ship to LIV Golf, which is funded by Saudi Arabia and run by golf legend Greg Norman. Now, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan has released a letter to his golfers, ripping the LIV Golf defectors, and announcing that they are suspended from PGA Tour tournament play. I thought I’d share the letter in full. “PGA TOUR members: I wish to provide you with an update and share information regarding the current and former PGA TOUR players who are participating in the Saudi Golf League’s event in London today. Thank you for your trust, patience and loyalty. We have followed the Tournament Regulations from start to finish in responding to those players who have decided to turn their backs on the PGA TOUR by willfully violating a regulation. Simultaneous to you receiving this memo, the players (listed below) are being notified that they are suspended or otherwise no longer eligible to participate in PGA TOUR tournament

play, including the Presidents Cup. This also applies to all tours sanctioned by the PGA TOUR: the Korn Ferry Tour, PGA TOUR Champions, PGA TOUR Canada and PGA TOUR Latinoamérica. As you know, players listed below did not receive the necessary conflicting event and media rights releases – or did not apply for releases at all – and their participation in the Saudi Golf League/LIV Golf event is in violation of our Tournament Regulations. The same fate holds true for any other players who participate in future Saudi Golf League events in violation of our Regulations. Also in accordance with PGA TOUR Tournament Regulations, the players who have resigned their memberships will be removed from the FedExCup Points List when the official statistics following the RBC Canadian Open are posted on Sunday evening. To be clear, these players will not be permitted to play in PGA TOUR tournaments as a non-member via a sponsor exemption or any other eligibility category. For those who haven’t yet resigned, we will ensure they will not negatively impact your tournament eligibility, your position in the Priority Rankings or your eligibility to compete in the FedExCup Playoffs. We will update you as we work through this process.

You probably have more questions. What’s next? Can these players come back? Can they eventually play PGA TOUR Champions? Trust that we’re prepared to deal with those questions, and we’ll approach them in the same way we have this entire process: by being transparent and respecting the PGA TOUR regulations that you helped establish. These players have made their choice for their own financial-based reasons. But they can’t demand the same PGA TOUR membership benefits, considerations, opportunities and platform as you. That expectation disrespects you, our fans and our partners. You have made a different choice, which is to abide by the Tournament Regulations you agreed to when you accomplished the dream of earning a PGA TOUR card and — more importantly — to compete as part of the preeminent organization in the world of professional golf. I am certain our fans and partners — who are surely tired of all this talk of money, money and more money — will continue to be entertained and compelled by the world-class competition you display each and every week, where there are true consequences for every shot you take and your rightful

place in history whenever you reach that elusive winner’s circle. You are the PGA TOUR, and this moment is about what we stand for: the PGA TOUR membership as a whole. It’s about lifting up those who choose to not only benefit from the TOUR, but who also play an integral role in building it. I know you are with us, and vice versa. Our partners are with us, too. The fact that your former TOUR colleagues can’t say the same should be telling. This week, the RBC Canadian Open is a shining example of what you have created with the PGA TOUR: a starstudded field, a committed sponsor, sold-out hospitality offerings, record crowds and a global broadcast distribution. These elements are part of the TOUR’s DNA, built by the likes of Jack and Arnie, furthered by Tiger and countless others — whose legacies are inextricably linked, with each other and with the PGA TOUR. This collective legacy can’t be bought or sold. Please reach out with any questions, and please know that we remain committed to you — our players — as well as our fans and our partners. Sincerely, Jay Monahan” Follow Danny on Instagram @ DannyPicard.

f the Boston Celtics want to win the NBA Championship, then they’ll have to win two straight games against the Golden State Warriors, beginning with a mustwin Game 6 on Thursday night at the TD Garden. The Warriors won the pivotal Game 5 on Monday night in Golden State, 104-94, to take a 3-2 series lead of the C’s in the NBA Finals. That came after the Warriors also won Game 4 at the TD Garden, 10797, last Friday night, to even the series at 2-2. Now though, Boston finds itself needing to turn things around quickly and win Game 6 at home in order to force a Game 7 back in Golden State on Sunday night, with the Larry

O’Brien Trophy on the line. Probably the most disappointing thing for the Celtics so far is the fact that they lost Game 5 on a night in which Steph Curry went 0-for-9 from the three-point line, and Jayson Tatum had his best shooting game of the series. And yet, Boston still lost by 10 points. Tatum scored a game-high 27 points and shot 50 percent from the field in that Game 5 on Monday night. Marcus Smart also contributed 20 points of his own, while, on the other end, Curry finished with just 16 points. In the previous Game 4, Curry had 43 points. Stepping up during Curry’s miserable shooting night in Game 5 was Andrew Wiggins, who scored

a team-high 26 points on 12-of-23 shooting, and even he was 0-for-6 from the three-point line. Wiggins also had a game-high 13 rebounds. After the Warriors’ Game 5 win, their coach, Steve Kerr, addressed the team in the locker room after the game in a mic’d up moment for ESPN. In that speech, Kerr made it very clear that Golden State isn’t expecting a Game 7. “We’re going to get this in Boston,” said Kerr. “We’re going to finish this in Boston.” One would expect that the Warriors will have a much better and even more motivated Curry in Game 6 at the Garden, having missed all his three-point shots in Game 5. Draymond Green believes Curry’s

mindset will be a dangerous thing for the Celtics. “He’s going to be livid going into Game 6.” said Green after Game 5. “That’s exactly what we need.” As for what Curry’s strategy will be after the rough night in Game 5, he said he’s just going to do what he does best. “Uh, keep shooting, very simple,” said Curry after Game 5. “I’m not afraid to go 0-for or whatever because I’m going to keep shooting.” That could spell trouble for a Celtics team that now has their backs against the wall. Though, that isn’t necessarily showing in Vegas, as the Celtics are a 3.5-point favorite at home in Game 6.

SOX MOVE INTO PLAYOFF SPOT AFTER SUCCESSFUL WEST COAST TRIP

D

SBT Staff

on’t look now, but the Boston Red Sox are in the playoff hunt. Who would’ve thought that’d be possible after a brutal first monthand-a-half of the regular season. Just two weeks ago, the Red Sox were three games under .500. But after going 8-2 on their latest West

Coast road trip to begin the month of June, the Sox are now above .500 and entered this week as the third and final AL Wild Card team in the postseason race. Sure, it’s a little early to call it a “race” at the moment, but the fact that the Red Sox have worked their way back into a playoff position so soon is impressive, even if they’re still 12 or so games behind the New York Yan-

kees for first place in the AL East. Boston began a nine-game home stand this week, with three games against the Oakland Athletics, three games against the St. Louis Cardinals, and three games against the Detroit Tigers. There is some bad news, however. The Red Sox announced on Sunday that ace Nathan Eovaldi has been placed on the 15-day Injured List

with low back inflammation. Eovaldi is 4-2 this season with a 3.16 ERA. Just a few weeks ago, on May 28, Eovaldi pitched his first career complete game. In his last outing, last week, Eovaldi picked up the win over the Angels in LA, pitching five scoreless innings while throwing 84 pitches. The earliest Eovaldi can return to pitch for the Red Sox is June 24 at Cleveland.
