Recognizing the South Carolina Power Players

T

he South Carolina Chamber of Commerce’s success and legislative victories are made possible by business leaders who recognize the value of investing in the work we do on their behalf. Many businesses choose to invest in the South Carolina Chamber at

exceptional levels. These companies, who make an annual investment of $5,000 or more, are part of the Palmetto Stars program and represent the Chamber’s highest level of commitment. Along with all of our members, each Palmetto Stars member shares a common goal: they want to make South Carolina a better place to do business, live and work. These businesses not only provide financial support, but also enable their employees to offer their time and expertise to help the Chamber in a variety of ways. They serve on our boards and committees, provide input toward the annual Competitiveness Agenda, and interact with legislators to develop pro-growth policies for South Carolina. Without the dedication of these organizations, the Chamber could not have achieved the legislative successes it has had over the years, including passing comprehensive tort reform, workers’ compensation reform, and unemployment insurance tax relief for employers, just to name a few. As I travel the state to meet with business leaders, sit down with public policy officials, and participate in board meetings, I regularly point to the support our Palmetto Stars members provide. In order to continue to support economic development opportunities in South Carolina and maintain our state’s pro-business environment, we need to grow this program so the Chamber can continue to build the relationships necessary for success. I encourage all of our members to consider becoming a Palmetto Star and I thank all of our members, and especially our Palmetto Stars, for their support this past year. Sincerely,

Ted Pitts President & CEO South Carolina Chamber of Commerce

For more than 160 years, SCE&G has fueled economic growth in South Carolina by delivering safe, reliable energy to homes and businesses throughout the state. With a diverse mix of energy generation, SCE&G serves approximately 688,000 electric customers and 325,000 natural gas customers across a 22,000 square mile service territory. The addition of two new nuclear units will increase the company’s fuel diversity and create more than 3,000 new jobs at the peak of construction. SCE&G and its employees are dedicated to improving the quality of life in the communities we serve by contributing financial resources and countless volunteer hours to charitable organizations in the Palmetto State.

Pure Power Technologies designs and manufactures high performing air and fuel systems. The company is vertically integrated, combining research and development, engineering and manufacturing functions. A vital part of the business is the re-manufacture of used injectors and valves and the precision machining of specialty alloys. The company currently has two locations in the Midlands, a manufacturing facility in Blythewood and a research and development facility in the SCRA Business Park. Pure Power has been a proud supporter of the South Carolina Chamber since its inception in 2010.

F

ounded in 1899 as the Southern Novelty Company, Sonoco is South Carolina’s largest homegrown company, with headquarters in Hartsville. Today, the international manufacturing firm is looking forward and embracing a spirit of curiosity, collaboration and innovation. Sonoco has more than 20,000 employees working in 335 operations in 33 countries serving some of the world’s best known brands. With annualized net sales of approximately $5 billion, Sonoco’s diverse employees are connected through a shared culture, vision, mission and priorities. Sonoco divides its businesses into four segments: Consumer Packaging, Display and Packaging, Paper and Industrial Converted, and Protective Solutions. Today’s Sonoco is a solutions company that offers packaging, rather than a packaging company that happens to offer some solutions. The newly developed i6 Innovation Process—insights, ideation, invention, integration, interaction and iteration—is a disciplined, step-by-step approach enabling Sonoco to connect global market and consumer insights to the development of customized solutions that provide customers with a differentiated competitive advantage. Sonoco’s ability to provide

this holistic, customized solution is driven by the fact that it offers the industry’s broadest range of packaging formats and services. The i6 process is the engine for collaborative, purposedriven innovation. Each step provides the opportunity to add value to package development, process development, in-store merchandizing and everything in-between. Sonoco recently unveiled the iPS Studio at its Hartsville headquarters, a new center for packaging innovation purposefully designed to encourage curiosity, collaboration and creativity. At the iPS Studio, Sonoco has constructed a physical space that matches its philosophical approach to problem solving and creating ‘what’s next’ in innovative packaging solutions. From real-world retail and home environments for customer insights and product testing, to 3D printing, laboratory testing and manufacturing simulation, the iPS Studio has it all under one roof. At Sonoco, we bring more to packaging than just the package.

Select Health of South Carolina Celebrates 20 Years

T

wenty years ago, J. Michael Jernigan’s vision to help those most in need became a reality when he founded Select Health of South Carolina. In 1995, Jernigan (pictured above), a North, South Carolina native, used his background in health care administration to assemble a team of dynamic leaders who shared his personal mission to help people get care, stay well and build healthy communities. Their passion for improving population health led to the birth of the First Choice Medicaid health plan, which coordinated the care of 99 members in 1996. In 1999, Select Health became a part of the AmeriHealth Caritas family of companies, a national leader in Medicaid managed care and other integrated health care solutions. Today, Market President Rebecca Engelman (pictured above), who joined the company

in 1996 as its fourth employee, leads our state’s oldest and largest Medicaid managed care organization. She and Jernigan, now regional president at AmeriHealth Caritas, empower a workforce of more than 400 dedicated associates who work in partnership with over 10,000 providers to serve 349,000 members statewide, of which more than 75 percent are children. Select Health associates often cite a missionfocused environment as a major reason the organization has been recognized as one of the “Best Places to Work in S.C.” for seven years. First Choice is one of seven Medicaid plans in the country and the only health plan in South Carolina to hold the National Committee for Quality Assurance’s (NCQA) prestigious Multicultural Health Care Distinction. Select Health’s Culturally

and Linguistically Appropriate Services program coordinates plan wide delivery of culturally competent health care to First Choice members, which resulted in this recognition. Select Health continuously works to be responsible stewards of state and federal funds, and in 2014 alone, the company helped our state save $115 million in health care costs. Estimated cost savings since 2009 totals $417 million. Select Health has the strength, stability and expertise to lead South Carolina Medicaid managed care into the future, ensuring high quality, cost-effective health care for our state.
