Chamber Team

Welcome to the Autumn edition of 4Front, the magazine for businesses in South Cheshire Since the last edition of ‘4FRONT’ it has been announced that the UK economy grew by 0.8% in the third quarter of 2013 and the Governor of the Bank of England stated that the UK recovery had taken hold, which is fantastic news and a confidence boost for the local business community. While we are all aware of the difficult economic circumstances we have found ourselves in over the last few years, I have met with many small and large businesses and it is clear to me that throughout the difficult period our local companies have been constantly bucking the national trend and performing magnificently well against all the odds. My view was reinforced emphatically at our 17th Annual South Cheshire Chamber Business Awards at Crewe Hall which had an extremely positive atmosphere. The Awards are a fantastic opportunity to celebrate successful businesses and business people from our local community and speaking to the judges, all the entrants were of an extremely high standard. On the evening our Chairman John Dunning, declared at the Awards that the future looks bright for South Cheshire and although some elements are controversial, the Chamber supports the growth agenda and believes the area can become an economic powerhouse. The business community through the Chamber, will have a key role to play in driving the growth agenda forward and we must not be complacent and rely on other organisations to do it for us. Throughout the year the amount of good news stories in each edition of ‘4FRONT’ continues to grow and long may it continue. The Chamber has been extremely busy. It is great to see so many new businesses joining the Chamber and taking advantage of our new

Welcome Mornings, which are also open to existing members too. It is an opportunity to find out how your company can make the most of their Chamber Membership. The South Cheshire Business Loan Fund continues to support a range of local businesses with the objective of sustaining or increasing employment locally.

While HS2 continues to be a hot topic at the moment, we should not forget our excellent connections to major airports including Manchester. At our Annual Business Luncheon attendees heard from John Twigg, planning Director for Manchester Airport Group and the importance of their connection with Crewe. In amongst all the good news, there was sad news to report. Chamber Board Director Betty Foster recently passed away. A former research scientist, Betty served as a Director at the Chamber for over 20 years and will be sorely missed. Betty was very passionate about the area and would demand the very best for Crewe and South Cheshire, a mantra which the Chamber continues to adopt. I hope you enjoy this edition of ‘4FRONT’ and if your company has good news to share please submit your article to Tina at the Chamber.

Bookshop begins new chapter with Chamber support

Chamber loans executive Richard Weilding visiting Steve Lawson of Nantwich Bookshop and Coffee Lounge

A landmark business in Nantwich is enjoying a new lease of life, thanks to cash support from South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce. Nantwich Bookshop and Coffee Lounge secured a Chamber loan to carry out a sympathetic programme of refurbishment at the old black and white listed building. After failing to gain support from traditional banking facilities, owners Steve and Denise Lawson turned to the business organisation for help. The couple, who are celebrating their 10th anniversary running the business, were overwhelmed with the support they received from the Chamber based at Crewe Business Park. Now complete, the expanded café area can cater for more than 80 customers. There’s

months to five years. Just a small loan can make the difference to one less person being out of work locally.”

Revamped kitchens mean food can be prepared more quickly for customers dining inside and alfresco. The business is now planning poetry and book club evenings, making the most of a new drinks licence.

The Chamber can provide an easy-tocomplete Business Plan template with helpful guidance notes and will be happy to help develop your plan.

Mr Lawson said: “Our applications to various banks and even our own trade association were unsuccessful, but we were quickly given the go-ahead from the Chamber. “The loan process was stress-free and the application progressed with ease. It was good to be able to talk to local people who know our business and genuinely care about its future. As a result, this lovely old building has been given a make-over and its future assured for years to come.”

Need a loan? The Chamber can help . . . As work progresses at Crewe Station you may, like me, feel that at long last we shall have a station access which befits the status of the town as a major railway junction – not just historically but for many years to come, particularly so should HS2 come to fruition.

The impact however is not all about the station’s appearance, it is more the operational benefits that will follow and the longer term planning for accessibility and serviceability Business Loans Executive from projected higher volumes. Richard Weilding

When visiting company premises in my banking days I was always wary of any business that felt it necessary to have a fountain in the reception, (well stocked with fish) and a photo on the wall of the owner shaking hands with Margaret Thatcher or Tony Blair. Events of the past 5 years have taught everyone that cash is a scarce commodity and capital expenditure needs to be specific and defined by result. This is a maxim that every parent will be only to aware of when engaged in conversation with their offspring whilst wearing the hat of Bank of Mum and Dad, albeit will constantly fail to put the message into action. It is not easy to accept that a fortnight in Ibiza with pals is a key element of any teenager’s journey into adulthood or that a 63 reg car is an ideal first vehicle.

This is a true story. I recall one of my sons being in Australia and asking for £400 to go scuba diving off the Great Barrier Reef – an expedition which was funded by Bank of Mum and Dad. Whilst paying into Nat West Nantwich. I explained to the cashier what I was doing and as I turned to leave, the woman next in the queue told me that she had overheard our conversation and she was doing exactly the same thing for her daughter. Whether either of us felt that the outlay was justified is up for debate but I suspect that we both felt that such a one off opportunity should not be missed.

At a time when the Co-op Bank is looking to close branches it appears as though the Bank of Mum and Dad is ever growing. In reality the outlays we make for our children now will have an impact on their lives for the next 50 years or so which if nothing else puts the projected timescales for HS2 into perspective.

I for one would not like to try and budget our outlays on our children and grandchildren over the next 20 years or so but the commitment to undertake the investment will remain. I doubt that a government bail-out will be available should demand outstrip supply. If you have shorter term investment plans that need funding then feel free to get in touch where we may not be as flexible as the Bank of Mum and Dad but we do lend for reasonable projects and rest assured that having funded your project, we will not remind you of this for the next 20 years. We shall however expect a more concerted effort at a repayment plan than currently available to Mum and Dad.

Aviation boss calls for better connections with Crewe Manchester Airport is campaigning to improve connectivity with Crewe, its planning director has revealed.

Chamber Chief Executive Paul Colman, Chairman John Dunning and President John Bowler welcome John Twigg to Wychwood Park Hotel

Speaking at the Chamber’s annual lunch at Wychwood Park Hotel, John Twigg said an hourly train from Crewe to the airport - the number one choice for Cheshire travellers was ‘poor’ and strengthened the case for HS2 to take pressure off the rail timetable.

He outlined Manchester Airport Group’s ambitious plans for growth including the £690m Airport City at Manchester which will see offices, shops and high-tech businesses developed in the Enterprise Zone creating 15,000 jobs. He echoed the comments of HS2 boss Alison Munro at the Chamber’s annual dinner about the high-speed route being vital to ease pressure on the over-crowded West Coast Main line. He said: “History shows that train and transport links are at the core of commerce so we are keen to see HS2 and other improvements. “Airport services from Crewe are poor, just one an hour. HS2 takes London off the local network, freeing up travel space. For us it is not about speed, but capacity and getting people to the airport.” Chamber chief executive Paul Colman said: “A lot has been said about HS2 which the Chamber fully supports but we invited John Twigg to our luncheon to remind us about another great transport interchange, not too far away, Manchester Airport.”

CHAMBER NEWS

Edward Timpson MP One topic that a lot of constituents write to me about is the Government’s plan to cap the amount of benefits that a workless household can receive at £26,000. The vast majority are very supportive, and understand the link between getting people in Crewe and Nantwich off benefits and into work to improve both their lives and our local economy. I realise too that some people are concerned about the policy, but I believe that the cap has been set at the right level. The system we inherited from the last Government is not only unaffordable, but it has trapped some people in Crewe and Nantwich in poverty. Too many people were better off out of work and on benefits, than if they entered the world of work, and this created a culture of entitlement and welfare dependency. It’s simply not fair that benefit claimants can receive higher incomes than families who are in work.

Why You Should Be Networking Online Social networking has always been a great business asset. Just think back to the number of jobs and business opportunities you learned about through your friends and colleagues. Online social networking is no different. Worldwide Social networks like LinkedIn are designed around the business aspects of social networking and are being used more and more by HR departments to locate talented employees. Closer to home, and catering to the business community of South Cheshire, the Chamber Portal facilitates an online networking platform with a business focus for Chamber Members. The online networking platform offers companies and their employees a space for interaction, informationsharing, relationship-building and engagement with the Chamber and other members of the local business community.

Importantly the benefit cap will not affect the disabled or those who are in work and receive working tax credits.

Social networks are also at the core of something called "social media marketing". This is a way of promoting your products and services through social media sites like social networks, blogs and other social platforms. If you run your own business or even if you just sell a few bits and bobs on eBay every once in a while; having a social network presence can help you reach out to and find your prospective customers.

However, there has to be a limit on the amount of money benefit claimants can receive, and I believe that the current limit is currently set at a fair rate of £26,000, which, as any employer knows, is the equivalent to someone earning £35,000 before tax.

Besides promotions, these networks also provide a range of services designed to help businesses market themselves more effectively to the targeted demographic, including the ability to advertise, promote offers, seek help etc.

This is a salary that many working families would be happy to receive, and underlines the point that hard working people should not pay their taxes in order to support people who refuse to work. The good news is that our local economy has improved dramatically.

Social networking is particularly vital for entrepreneurs. Freelancers can find contacts via professional groups on LinkedIn and Twitter, while business owners can make use of the large user bases to market their products and services.

In some cases this is more than double the average household income, and in extreme circumstances, up to £104,000. That's why we've brought in a cap on benefits, so that no family can get more on benefits than the average family does by going out to work.

The number of businesses in the North West has increased by 46,395 in the last three years, and there are now fewer than 2,000 people claiming Jobseekers Allowance in Crewe and Nantwich something we haven't seen since January 2009. This figure dropped a staggering 14.4% in the last year to October. Youth unemployment has also dropped 17.6% in the last year, and has outstripped the overall rate of unemployment reduction locally. So with unemployment in the constituency dropping almost a quarter since the last Government left office, and a strong policy on welfare, I believe we are getting our local economy back on track for the success it deserves. It is also thanks in no small part to our local businesses stepping up to the plate that business confidence and employment are growing. Edward Timpson can be contacted at 30 Victoria Street, Crewe CW1 2JE, on 01270 501725, or through edwardtimpson.com

For small businesses starting off, they can also be used as a first foray online, giving online visitors information about your products and services, and as a way to attract new business. Niche social networks such as the Chamber Portal are designed specifically for a particular interest group or community and allow you to take advantage of the latest web-based technologies to connect online. Whether it’s the printers, the designers or the photographers, local businesses have a long tradition of sticking together — to share ideas, promote each other’s companies and refer loyal customers. It is no different online. Using social networks businesses can link up with similar companies to share news and ideas, build relationships with complementary businesses while keeping an eye on your competitors.

Dispelling the theory of a ‘standard woman,’ she pioneered making-to-measure and dressmaking patterns that could be adapted to fit all sizes.

New era at Whitby Morrison

Alongside running her business, Betty Foster – Master Patterns, she became a radio and television presenter as well as an author of books on fashion and pattern design.

Whitby Morrison has unveiled the Amalfi - its new ice cream van. Several orders have already been taken and deliveries will commence early in 2014. Stuart Whitby said: “The Amalfi bears all the nostalgic characteristics of ice cream vans of the past but in a stunning modern sense. The design philosophy was simply to bring some extra magic to what is already a great British icon - a design which is instantly recognised as an ice cream van. “The name Amalfi was chosen as it immediately brings to mind the blue skies, warm seas and sun kissed beaches of Italy, the perfect setting for selling ice cream.” The Amalfi was unveiled at Nantwich Town FC where two were driven into the stadium. With musical chimes at full volume and drivers dressed as ‘The Stig’ from Top Gear, they met with great applause. More than 500 guests were ‘wowed’ by the striking design and advances in technology. The van is designed to reduce energy consumption and is quieter in operation. Finishing touches include electrical switches specially manufactured in Switzerland, polished chrome trims and exclusive badging. As well as supplying the UK market, Whitby export worldwide. With the launch of Amalfi and vans currently in production for Azerbaijan, UAE, Brunei and Johor, 2014 is set to be a very busy year for the Crewe company.

A former research scientist, Mrs Foster of Manor Way in Crewe became well-known in the fashion industry for developing a new system of dressmaking.

Chamber chief executive Paul Colman said: “Born in Crewe in 1926, Betty succeeded in an era when few women were in business and went on to become a high-profile and well-respected figure in her field. She will be missed by the business community and all who knew her.” Mrs Foster, who acted as a Small Business Enterprise counsellor, was awarded an MBE in 1992 for her services to the community. Despite ill health and mobility problems, she was a familiar face at Chamber events including the annual business awards. Chamber chairman John Dunning said: “Betty was an inspiration to many and for years she played an important role on the Chamber board. “She always spoke up for small businesses and was passionate about the economic growth of Crewe. Betty was particularly supportive of young people and will be sorely missed” A thanksgiving following her passing was held at St Mark’s Church in Shavington where Mrs Foster had been organist for 25 years.

Event proves everyone’s cup of tea Chamber members enjoyed an awardwinning afternoon tea before a guided tour of the Jacobean mansion taking in its state rooms, historic chapel, Sheridan lounge, Hall of Pillars and Victorian kitchens.

Businesses from across South Cheshire checked into Crewe Hall for a networking event with a difference. The hotel welcomed more than 30 Chamber members to an afternoon tea in the plush surroundings of the Great Library. General manager Mart Louwerse told how the hotel was a 24-hour business employing more than 200 people in roles including front of house, kitchens, spa, housekeeping and banqueting.

Business was buoyant with more people making hotel and spa bookings months in advance. He said: “People are once again planning ahead, a sign that the recession is loosening its grip. They still want value for money but don’t mind paying for quality.” The event was an opportunity for the hotel to promote its luxury conference facilities – a growing area of business.

Among the sectors represented were employment law, IT, PR, property, accountancy, child care, tourism and translation. Chief Executive Paul Colman said: “We like to offer members a chance to network in a variety of settings. The hotel is an asset to Crewe and provided a truly memorable afternoon.” December 13 will offer networking with a festive flavour when the Chamber hosts its Christmas get-together at Rookery Hall. BUSINESS AWARDS 2013 13

The only way is up! South Cheshire Chamber Business Award 2013 - another great night South Cheshire is on the cusp of a bright economic future after surviving the recession better than most. This message of optimism was warmly applauded at the Chamber’s 17th annual Business Awards which drew a record 240 guests to Crewe Hall. Chamber Chairman, John Dunning, said: “For once I can say there is better news on the economic front. “The economy is coming out of recession, unemployment is down and business confidence is returning. “South Cheshire continues to perform well with lots of success stories. “Although some elements may be controversial, the Chamber fully supports the growth agenda and believes South Cheshire can become an economic power house. “As a business community working through the Chamber, we have a key role to play in driving the growth agenda forward - after all, it is the private sector that will generate wealth and create the jobs that will be needed.” The area, he added, would need to lead from the front. “Although we work in partnership with them, we cannot rely on Cheshire East Council, Marketing Cheshire, the LEP or the Government to have South Cheshire at the top of their agenda.

“Better news on the economic front” John Dunning, Chamber Chairman

“The only agenda which we can be sure of being top of is our own. Our destiny is in our own hands. We are the stakeholders, the ones with the greatest vested interest. We know the area better than anyone else. “South Cheshire has a proud history but seems to have somehow lost its identity and pride in recent years. Our challenge is to create something everyone can be proud of again. So let’s all pull together for a better future for our area.”

Local businesses could be justifiably proud of their achievements. The awards evening highlighted a tremendous talent base, particularly among young entrepreneurs. Full of high drama and surprises, the event produced some great tales of triumph and determination in a difficult climate.

ESTC shines as employers A company has struck gold after creating the ‘feel good factor’ for its growing workforce. ESTC in Nantwich has become one of just a handful of companies in the North West to achieve the Investors in People gold status after excelling in more than 160 areas of good practice. Staff at the Events, Stewarding, Training and Consultancy Ltd were found to be well managed, trained and rewarded for their roles.

ESTC managing director Eileen Williams with apprentice administrator Emily Bishop

The company – a key player in the field of safety and security at famous football clubs and events in the UK and overseas – has increased its workforce from eight to 22 over the past year and all were quizzed by the IIP assessor. Children from Weaver School, Nantwich sport their lanyards

Nantwich Town FC and its main commercial partner County Insurance have teamed up to offer schoolchildren free admission to all Nantwich Town Evo-Stik Premier Division home games. Over 2000 striking green lanyards have been delivered to all primary schools in Nantwich. Children, accompanied by a paying adult, will get free admission when they turn up at a home game with the Nantwich Town/County Insurance lanyard. Nantwich Town chairman Jon Gold said: “We are very grateful to our main sponsor County Insurance for supporting this initiative and it is a fantastic opportunity for families to visit the Weaver stadium for a cost effective and enjoyable day out.”

One employee told the inspector: “There’s a good feeling that managers believe in you and invest in your training.” Another said: “I feel lucky to have such a good manager.” Managing director Eileen Williams said: “Over the past year we have invested £130,000 in training and believe in an ‘open door’ policy where employees can raise issues they wish to discuss. “ESTC has leapt from standard to gold status in a year which is a great way to celebrate our 8th anniversary.” The company is also celebrating a new contract with Disney and will provide safety and security at major events and store openings in the UK. For more information on ESTC call 01270 626663 or email info@estcgroup.com

Meanwhile County Insurance has helped give a bumper boost to an appeal for The Christie Hospital. It hosted a golf day at Mottram Hall which raised a fantastic £3,295 for Barry’s Project 150 – a drive to raise £150,000 to build a new High Efficiency Particulate Air room in the Young Oncology Unit. The room will allow teenagers and young adults under cancer treatment to stay in a safe environment with an extra bed for a family member. Leading the appeal is Barry Thompson, President of the Insurance Institute of Manchester. Dave Clapp, MD of the County Group, said: “We invited clients, insurer partners and friends to participate with each ticket price giving a generous donation to the charity. The weather on the day was atrocious but everyone played with a smile on their face and enjoyed a great day.” For more information on the children’s lanyard scheme at Nantwich Town FC contact Jon Gold at jongold7@gmail.com County Insurance can be contacted on 01270 506980

He said: “We started with the aim of initially servicing the Cheshire area but have quickly found ourselves employed throughout the North West representing some of the area’s most prominent companies. “I never anticipated that we would have found our services in such demand, or that we would be covering such a diverse range. “We’ve found ourselves re-investigating serious criminal offences, re-constructing accident scenes, gathering evidence for

employment tribunals, and sadly providing proof of infidelity. It’s been a challenging but highly enjoyable year.” The team provide experienced highly trained private investigation, intelligence acquisition, expert witness and related training services throughout the North West and North Wales areas. ABSOLUTE Recruiters Launch Care Company A Crewe-based recruitment group has launched a new company filling vacancies for registered nursing staff, support workers and care assistants. Absolute Health and Care will provide recruitment support for local authorities, private healthcare providers and social care providers in North and South Cheshire as well as Shropshire. Setting up the new, standalone company is another ambitious move by the Absolute Group which already has four recruitment companies in the region. It brought in an experienced healthcare recruitment manager and a registered nurse to get Absolute Health and Care off the ground. Absolute Group’s managing director Jessica Marshall said that the healthcare sector was the next logical step in the group’s expansion because there was a gap in the market for a recruitment partner for healthcare providers. “Our core values of a personal service are reflected in our mantra, “it's all about people”, and this has helped us to set all the companies in the absolute Group apart in what are very competitive fields,” she said. “And we saw an opportunity to do exactly the same in the healthcare sector. “We’re building an expert, professional and dependable service which supports local authorities, private healthcare providers and social care providers by making available a recruitment resource for

Absolute’s Claire Robinson and Colin Porter who head the new healthcare recruitment company

qualified and registered nursing staff, support workers and care assistants for all grades. “We take the time to provide exactly the right people in roles ranging from general or mental healthcare to supporting people in areas including learning disabilities and independent living.” Colin Porter and Claire Robinson will head up the team that is initially based at Absolute Group’s main office on High Street in Crewe. The new company has already secured a number of contracts will local healthcare providers and has a rigorous screening process for potential candidates interested in full-time and temporary positions in line

with Care Quality Commission (CQC) and Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) guidelines – as well as conducting advanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks. Mrs Marshall, who runs the company with husband and fellow director Dan, is predicting great things of the new venture that brings to five, the number of firms owned by the Absolute Solutions Group - which also includes Absolute Recruitment and Summit Executive Search in Crewe, Meadowbank Associates in Nantwich and Bralin Recruitment in Winsford. She added: “We’re very excited about Absolute Health and Care because we’re introducing the way we want to run recruitment service to the healthcare sector and it’s a formula that has served us very well.”

BENTLEY Bentley among first to achieve environmental standard Bentley also invested heavily in the replacement and modernisation of major sections of both the water main and fire hydrant systems across the site, eliminating many underground leaks that occurred because of the more traditional mains supply pipes. Automatic taps and low-flush toilets in washrooms has saved over 1,500m³ of water every year. Bentley has become the first automotive manufacturer, and among the first ten organisations in the world, to achieve the Carbon Trust Water Standard. This comes after the company reduced its water usage by 35.7 per cent over the previous year at its Crewe HQ. Its Environmental Team implemented a number of initiatives, after calling on support from the wider workforce. Over 4,000 Crewe-based employees were asked for suggestions on water reduction measures which resulted in an overhaul of certain parts of the 339,000m³ factory site. As part of the reduction, Bentley’s Paint Shop and water treatment facilities were renovated, and a dedicated water recycling facility was built. This facility enables Bentley to re-use water efficiently, with little wastage, preparing cars as they enter the paint spraying process.

REASEHEATH Proud day for Reaseheath graduates The ceremony marked the achievement of over 150 students who had completed degrees in agriculture, equine science, food technology, horticulture, machinery dealership management and countryside management, delivered in partnership with Harper Adams University.

Rural industries, he said, offered a fantastic future, particularly for skilled and capable people who could help solve the challenges of energy, water and food security and the impact that these industries had on the countryside. The specialist technical education and skills training offered by Reaseheath had resulted in 90% of last year’s graduates being in related employment within six months on an average starting salary of £21,200. To ensure students had the competitive edge in the jobs market, Reaseheath had invested £40 million into specialist facilities. Its food manufacturing, equestrian, agricultural and animal management training centres were recognised as among the best in the country. New halls of residence had been completed and additional sporting facilities were under construction.

MORNFLAKE Support the planet with Mornflake Mornflake products have just become a little greener – thanks to the use of sustainable palm oil. The company has joined an international movement calling for the environmentallyfriendly production of this crucial crop. Spokeswoman Catherine Sadler: “Palm oil is an essential ingredient in products such as our granola where it is used as a binding agent.

Mornflake’s Catherine Sadler with a sample of the eco-friendly palm oil

“Sadly in a lot of industries it is sourced unsustainably, leading to deforestation. Vast areas of rainforest are slashed and burned each year to make way for palm oil plantations. Large scale deforestation

contributes to climate change and kills wildlife in the process. “Our mission is to only use sustainable palm, from areas where the fragile eco-system is protected. It means everytime you eat a Mornflake product you will know it has been produced without harm to the planet.” Mornflake remains committed to becoming a carbon-neutral business. In Scotland it uses windmills to power milling machines. A shipment of sustainable palm oil from overseas has arrived at its Crewe headquarters and will be replaced regularly.

making a play on the words porridge and cereal.

The Crewe-based firm was seen by millions on a new series of Piers Morgan’s Life Stories. A series of spoof advertisements saw Mornflake breakfast products such as organic oats, oatbran muesli, granola, superfast oats and chocolately squares in a chair being ‘interviewed’ by a Piers look-alike. The campaign aimed to raise a smile and plant the product name firmly in the minds of the show’s vast audience.

One advert featured best-selling organic oats in a Union Jack box. Asked about its favourite TV role, it replied: “It has to be Porridge, now that’s a classic British serial”

Mornflake spokeswoman Catherine Sadler said: “Our products are already seen in supermarkets up and down the country. They sell well and have a loyal following but the TV campaign gave us an opportunity to further strengthen the brand and create a warm-hearted feeling about the products through the medium of a light-hearted commercial.” For more information on Mornflake visit www.mornflake.com

A new chapter for reading charity Chamber officials have welcomed a new charity member – Beanstalk, a national literacy organisation that recruits, vets, trains and supports volunteers to work in primary schools with children who have fallen behind with their reading.

Career Academy - a chance to support the young and benefit your business One of the biggest challenges currently faced by businesses is ensuring that there are enough work-ready young people to fill the gaps in our workforces. Yet with one million young people out of work, employers’ perceptions of young people can be a major hurdle to employment.

Jon Barnes, Chamber Team

Leader handing cheque to Beanstalk has already Gail Washington of Beanstalk received a cash boost from its involvement with the South Cheshire Chamber.

The annual charity golf day helped to raise £372 for the cause following an after dinner collection. The money will support the charity’s work in South Cheshire. Area manager Gail Washington said: “Our vision is a nation of confident children who can read and grow up to lead successful lives. “Beanstalk reading helpers work with children on a one-toone basis, giving them their full attention and support to improve reading levels, increase overall confidence and inspire a lifelong love of reading. The impact of not learning to read at primary school has devastating consequences for a child’s future life chances.” Now Beanstalk is looking to support more children, especially in the Crewe area. If you would like to hear more about volunteering or helping to fundraise call Gail Washington on 01782 827375.

New member turns hobby into business

Johnathan Clover in the studio

Cloverleaf Images is a new commercial photography studio that has recently opened its doors on Middlewich Street, Crewe. Owner Johnathan Clover transformed a dilapidated old warehouse storage room into a state-of-the-art photographic studio. A former product manager at a software company, he was already working part-time as a wedding and portrait photographer when he decided to take the plunge and devote all his time to a job he loved. Cloverleaf Images is a specialist in providing creative, commercial photography for businesses of all sizes needing to promote their organisation, products and/or services. Services include headshots, commercial portraits, event and PR shots or portfolio shoot sessions. The studio is also available to hire.

The CBI reports that 81% of SMEs are not confident that schoolleavers possess the right level of employability skills. Fortunately, there are organisations which can help. One such organisation is Career Academies UK, a charity building bridges between employers and young people seeking work. The charity provides a programme of internships and mentoring for 16-19 year old students around the UK, many from disadvantaged backgrounds. Indeed, 4,000 employee volunteers from over 1,400 organisations, both large and small, around the UK contribute time and skills to the Career Academy programme. How can I get involved in South Cheshire? Members of the South Cheshire Chamber can impact positively on local young people by supporting the Business Career Academy centre at South Cheshire College in the following ways: •

Become a Partner in Business - employees act as a role model, critical friend and advisor to a student over two academic years. This also helps the employee develop their own coaching, mentoring and leadership skills.

·

Become an active member of a Local Advisory Board - this is an opportunity for employees to engage meaningfully with the world of education, influence young people’s learning and to extend their networks.

·

Deliver Guru Lectures to students - this can improve a person’s presentation skills. Even chief executives report that speaking to inquisitive young people can be a challenge!

·

Offer a six-week paid internship to a Career Academy student - businesses not only offer the student a ‘window on work’ but they also benefit themselves from a talented young person doing a real job within their company.

·

Be an Internship supervisor and gain practical experience in managing and coaching a young person.

How will my organisation benefit? Career Academies UK recently commissioned some research with employers.100 senior managers in 85 companies were consulted about their experiences of working with 16-19 year olds and the results were surprisingly positive. By engaging with young people, organisations stated that they had become better connected with their communities and customers, improved their marketing to young people and opened up new talent streams. Law support reaches Emirates Commercial lawyer Andrew Tyrer visited Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates to deliver a two-day Legal Training Workshop to a high profile client - an international oil and gas consultancy. The workshop was themed "An Introduction to International Contract Law" and was attended by project managers, sales leaders and engineers involved in contract negotiations, project delivery and contract management. Andrew Tyrer said: “Project managers,

finance managers, sales managers and contract managers need to have at least an appreciation of the important terms of commercial contracts. “Whilst it is the lawyer’s primary role and responsibility to draft negotiate and finalise the terms and conditions, the task of understanding the contract is a job for everyone in the team. “With better levels of awareness, common problems that I come across such as “scope creep”, exposure to financial

penalties, unquantifiable exposure to damages claims, problems about getting paid, unknown or concealed costs of actually performing the project, can be avoided.” The workshop explained in lay terms what lawyers look for in contracts while identifying risk areas for the organisation. Andrew was able to illustrate his points by drawing on his experience as a General Counsel in Industry and in private practice as a Commercial Lawyer.

Ladies ‘bear’ all for charity Local businesswomen were invited to embrace their natural beauty and Go BearFaced wearing nothing but a Pudsey Pawprint on their faces during a photoshoot at Cloverleaf’s studios in Crewe.

Bare Bones Marketing and Cloverleaf Images teamed up with the networking group Forward Ladies to hold a ‘Go BearFaced’ for BBC Children in Need event.

The campaign ran nationwide encouraging women to ditch their make up and go barefaced for the day. Celebrities that took part in the campaign included Alex Jones from The One Show and singer Kimberley Walsh. Johnathan Clover said: “I wanted to do something to support the campaign as photographers all around the country were

taking part. It was a great way to mix business and fundraising.” Emma Dalzell of Bare Bones Marketing said: “Like many women, being barefaced for the day was a little bit scary, especially as there was photographic evidence, but it was worth it to raise nearly £150 through ‘mydonate’ page alone.” Overall the ladies raised a bumper £215. You can still donate, contact Johnathan Clover on 01270 589160 or Emma Dalzell on 07925 072736 to find out how.

Turning Japanese …. Emma Johnson put her knowledge of all things Japanese into action as the female lead in the Mid-Cheshire Musical Theatre’s production of Hot Mikado. It all began in 1992 when Emma went to teach English in a little village in the North Island of Hokkai in Japan. She took up various interests including karaoke and soon realised it was a great way to learn the language. Later she took a Master’s Degree in Japanese at the University of Sheffield and went on to work for the Japanese Consul and Vice-Consul at the Embassy of Japan in London. Returning to her home city of Manchester in 2000, she took the post of Associate Director at the Japan Centre North West where she developed and managed a portfolio of services to help British companies in their efforts to export to Japan. But her ‘karaoke years’ were never far behind. She joined Sale & Altrincham Musical Theatre, performing in the chorus. On moving

to Winsford in 2002, she joined Vale Royal Musical Theatre, performing in 14 shows. Roles have included Katie Brown in Calamity Jane, Laurie in Oklahoma and Maria in The Sound of Music. On joining MidCheshire Musical Theatre in 2011, her first show was ‘Titanic – The Musical’. Just lately she has been treading the boards as Baroness Elsa in The Sound of Music at The Grange Theatre in Hartford. Her life experiences put her on the road to a successful business – she now runs Enterprise Japan-UK. Services include ‘Succeed in Japan’ Cross-cultural Awareness Workshop for exporting companies and ‘A Taste of Japan’ Programme for schools. She is passionate about the opportunity to act as a cross-cultural bridge between Japan and the UK. To learn more visit www.enterprisejapan-uk.com

News from SkillShare September saw the hand over from Karen Brady of UK Fuels to Steve Floodgate (pictured) from SGW Payroll. SkillShare would like to thank Karen for all the sterling work she undertook on behalf of many local charities and others in the voluntary sector. Karen secured many matches for many charities which helped enormously. After working with Karen on several projects Steve was approached by Karen as her possible successor. Steve said: “It’s a challenge to follow in Karen’s footsteps but it is such a good cause to help charities in any which way we can. “More and more companies are realising their corporate and social

responsibilities and are often very willing to help by offering their expertise and resource, and of course there is some good PR to be gained from this, not least how they position themselves to their prospective clients.” There have been a few beneficiaries in a small way so far, The Nantwich Museum has had a little DIY sorted, courtesy of SG World, The YMCA has arranged a meeting venue with RedShift Radio for future hub meetings, enabling them to showcase their excellent facilities for meetings or just refreshments, Kevin from the Design Office is talking with Autism Networks, Gareth from Construction Linx is in conversation with Alsager Community Church and a website evaluation has been undertaken for the Donna Louise Trust.
