Welcome to the Autumn edition of 4Front, the magazine for businesses in South Cheshire Welcome to the autumn edition of ‘4FRONT’. At our recent Annual business luncheon held at Wychwood Park Hotel, there was a real sense of optimism and excitement about the future of South Cheshire. Following an interesting and insightful speech by Edward Timpson MP about his work as a Member of Parliament, the attendees received a presentation from John Barnes, Interim Executive Chair of the All Change for Crewe Partnership Board about all the developments which are taking place in the area. In his presentation John Barnes covered education, getting in and around the area, new housing, the town centre, inward investment and the potential of High Speed rail coming to Crewe. All the ingredients needed to help realise South Cheshire’s economic potential. The Chamber has played its part by lobbying and supporting these improvements and credit must be given to those organisations that helped make these developments happen including Cheshire East Council, Cheshire & Warrington Local Enterprise Partnership and Edward Timpson MP. The Chamber supports major strategic developments and long term objectives such as HS2, which if realised will be a significant game changer for the whole area, however we must not lose sight of the issues that businesses face now, such as traffic congestion, skills shortages and the need for a vibrant town centre.
This was evident from the feedback we received from attendees at the luncheon who were invited to provide their thoughts on the priority areas for Crewe and while it was acknowledged that these major developments are integral for the success of this area, there is more that can be done. Businesses want a clear vision for the town centre which includes significant improvements to the road network improving accessibility and the movement of staff and customers. The Chamber will therefore continue to lobby for action on those issues which are affecting the performance of our local businesses and are detrimental to the future economic progress of the area. If your business needs an issue resolving or requires assistance please do not hesitate to contact the Chamber team who are here to help. I hope you enjoy this magazine and if your company has good news to share for the next issue please make sure you submit your article to Tina at the Chamber. I hope that the magazine continues to grow with even more good news in future issues.

Smarter Ways to Travel hits the road Smarter Ways to Travel has been out and about in Crewe this summer, offering training and support to hundreds of people thinking about changing to more sustainable ways of travelling. Our Travel Advisors have shared their specialist travel knowledge of Crewe's highways and byways on resident's doorsteps, at local events, with businesses and also with students at South Cheshire College's Primary workshops. We've worked with Cheshire Constabulary to get bikes marked and road-fit for free, and inspired people to take up our cycle training and learn to maintain their own bikes, with help from our two cycling charities, CC Cycles at St Pauls and Recycle Cycles. Soon we'll be installing bike repair stands and pumps at Crewe Railway station and introducing Real Time bus information for passengers at key travel locations in Crewe. We've been helped in our campaigns by keen walker Emma and D-Day veteran Bernard, still cycling daily at 90! And we've helped make a walking/cycling commute a reality for more people keen to break away from the daily traffic grind by awarding Smarter Travel Grants to businesses and organisations committed to putting facilities in place to help more employees travel sustainably.
The Smarter Ways to Travel Adbike calls at County Insurance
If you would like to make sustainable travel easier for your employees too, apply for a Smarter Travel Grant, until Wednesday October 8.

Crewe - on the road to success sector partnership formed to drive forward regeneration. Mr Barnes gave updates on Crewe Green Link Road, linking Weston Road with the A500. Due to open next autumn, the scheme will reduce congestion and open up the Basford East employment site. Also under construction is the Basford West Spine Road. This will provide a link from Nantwich Road and Gresty Road to the A500 while opening up the Basford West site for 370 houses and other developments. A £10m scheme to improve M6 Junction 16 and widen the A500 will be complete by next spring, easing grid-locks on the stretch. Another scheme next year will improve traffic flow at Junction 17. He said: “Getting into and around Crewe is a priority area for ACFC. These schemes will not only ease congestion and make roads safer, but support Crewe’s ambitions for growth.” Above: Chamber Chairman John Dunning and Chief Executive Paul Colman with John Barnes of ACFC and Cllr Peter Groves at Wychwood Park Hotel
Crewe has been dubbed ‘High Growth City’ as major projects drive forward its future prosperity, the Chamber’s annual business luncheon was told. Underway are huge road schemes to unlock employment sites and speed up growth. A £15m Lifestyle Centre to improve the health and well-being of residents is taking shape with foundations now being laid in the heart of the town centre. A University Training College to inspire young people and set them on the road to successful engineering careers has the go-ahead.
Also in the pipeline were schemes to improve Sydney Road bridge, Crewe Green junction and A530 corridor through the Leighton area. Cllr Peter Groves, Cheshire East cabinet support member for prosperity and economic regeneration, said: “Crewe is on the cusp of new opportunity.
And, within a few weeks, Crewe will hear if it has won backing for its own HS2 rail hub, signalling high-speed travel up and down the country and a multitude of investment benefits. “This is a most exciting time to be living in Crewe, South Cheshire Chamber Chairman John Dunning told guests at Wychwood Park Hotel. The road schemes represent massive Government investment and faith in Crewe’s potential. “Yes we have rail heritage but getting in and out of Crewe by road has been the bane of commuters and businesses that rely on links with the M6. At last we can see the jigsaw taking shape and true connectivity ahead.” Speaking before more than 90 guests drawn from South Cheshire businesses, he echoed comments by John Barnes Interim Executive Chair of All Change for Crewe (ACFC) – the public and private
“Enhanced connectivity will set it apart from anywhere else in the North of England. Now we are gearing up for a positive announcement regarding the HS2 hub. “We may not have a cathedral but Crewe is right to be penned High Growth City.” Front cover: Paul Colman, Chamber Chief Executive, John Barnes, All Change for Crewe and John Dunning, Chamber Chairman meeting Crewe Green Link Road project manager Mike Gwyn
All in a day’s work for busy MP South Cheshire Chamber’s annual luncheon was addressed by Edward Timpson – giving an insight into his role as Crewe and Nantwich MP. His background, growing up in a family where over 80 children were fostered by his parents, had been the motivation for a legal career specialising in children’s cases. Drawn into politics with a need to make ‘real change’ the former barrister was elected MP in 2008. He now combines his constituency duties with his role as Children and Families Minister. Under his direction, key changes have been made to the adoption system to encourage more placements to be created for children in need of kind homes. In the six years since taking his seat in the Houses of Parliament, the father-of-three has helped more than15,000 constituents with problems. A typical week sees him handle 600 emails, 150 letters and 65 visits to his constituency office. He said: “I make a point of going out to businesses. It’s been a long journey from credit crunch to recession and recovery but the mood is now positive.”

From Westminster with Edward Timpson MP Small businesses are the lifeblood of the British economy and responsible for nearly half the job creation in the UK.
The business is GREAT campaign provides businesses with sources of advice and support to help them grow, and you may wish to explore it further via the following link:http://www.greatbusiness.gov.uk.
So I'm pleased that they will now feel the impact of several important tax cuts. Corporation tax has fallen to 21 per cent; help on business rates has come in; and the landmark Employment Allowance will take up to £2,000 off employer National Insurance bills.
It is essential to give local communities more autonomy to help rebalance our economy towards private-sector growth.
Indeed, 74,000 businesses in the North West are already benefitting from the Employment Allowance, including here in South Cheshire. To help small businesses take on apprentices the Government is providing an extra £85 million for over 100,000 grants to employers, and from April 2015 employer’s national insurance contributions for those under-21 will be abolished, making it easier for businesses to take on more young people. I recently opened Bentley's apprentice facility at South Cheshire College, so have seen the benefits first hand. Needless red tape is being cut and the net burden of regulation on business has fallen by almost £1.5 billion since January 2011. Access to finance for small businesses is being improved through the Business Bank and the qualification period for unfair dismissal has been doubled so employers cannot be taken to tribunal for two years.
Ministers are improving economic development at the regional level through Enterprise Zones and the £3.2 billion Regional Growth Fund from which we've been successful in securing significant investment for our area. Significant funding is also being devolved to Local Enterprise Partnerships to enable them to tackle barriers to growth in the private sector in their area. Also, availability of business rate discounts and Enhanced Capital Allowance will each be extended by three years as an incentive for new and expanding businesses to locate in Enterprise Zones. All over the country, it is small businesses that are driving forward economic growth through innovation and sheer hard work. It is fantastic that there are now over two million new private sector jobs and 400,000 more businesses, and in South Cheshire we are playing our part in that success. It's those new jobs and new businesses that are at the heart of helping get our local and national economies back on their feet. Edward Timpson can be contacted at 30 Victoria Street, Crewe CW1 2JE, on 01270 501725, or through edwardtimpson.com. Why not get in touch about your business?
Seminar urges: Act now to avoid hefty penalties Employers from across South Cheshire took the opportunity to learn more about auto enrolment at a seminar hosted by the South Cheshire Chamber. Gary Greer, senior partner at Afford Bond Chartered Accountants in Nantwich, led business owners through the changes and phased introduction of the scheme. The gradual phasing in of auto enrolment started in October 2012 with the country’s largest employers. Millions of workers across the UK saw a slice of their pay packet automatically diverted into a savings pot for their pension. The scheme means employers are obliged to pay in as well, with the government adding a little extra through tax relief. Now it is being extended to smaller firms. Those with fewer than 50 workers will need to start enrolling their staff from April next year and with a lead time of 3 to 6 months preparation needs to be started soon. Mr Greer’s presentation covered the key terms for members of the company involved, what records must be kept for each employee and how long records must be kept for.
He stressed that the employer has all the responsibility and liability so it is crucial to make plans now to avoid the current £2,500 daily fine, for companies which fail to comply. Chamber Chief Executive, Paul Colman said: “Gary gave a very informative presentation. He looked at how to prepare for auto enrolment and the all important time-scales involved. “It does mean more paperwork for local businesses and the Chamber is keen to ensure members make preparations now for auto-enrolment to avoid the hefty penalties.” Gary Greer added: “It’s not just about creating a qualifying pension scheme and integrating the payroll system, that is only 20% of the problem. The remaining 80% is a fully blown compliance function which has to be fully documented and updated every single time you run your payroll, be it weekly or monthly. By proper planning and preparation you can substantially reduce the impact upon your business both financially and in terms of the resource needed for this administrative burden.” Businesses needing to know more about Auto Enrolment are asked to call South Cheshire Chamber on 01270 504700

Chamber placement proves a rewarding experience Student Hannah MacLellan (pictured) has completed her internship at the Chamber. Here she tells of her Experience. At the end of the first year of the two year Extended Diploma course in Business, I secured my internship placement through the Career Academy, at the South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce. I wasn't left reading a book or hanging around. Straight away, I was introduced to my supervisor Madeleine, who took me round everyone working at the Chamber. That was a lovely opening gesture and the team responded to my arrival by making me feel so welcome with their open, friendly approach. I was set up with an account on the Chamber portal and Madeleine
allowed me to use the events Twitter account so I could manage and promote some of the Chamber events. I grew in confidence and was encouraged by Madeleine to forward plan and begin to organise some of the promotions and events for the coming months. This exposed me further to the market environment and key people and businesses which the Chamber of Commerce serves. The time during my internship passed in a flash - it was a really rewarding and enriching experience. I thought I knew how important the South Cheshire area was as a business zone and transport hub for the country as a whole. But the context, meaning and understanding I now have from the brief internship has demonstrated to me how important the place where I live, work and study is to the UK.
Solicitors scramble to victory Hibberts Solicitors won the Chamber shield by the closest of margins at the recent golf tournament held at Wychwood Park Golf Course. There were five teams within 2 points of each other, and Hibberts and Afford Bond finished tied on the same score. Following a count back the teams were split due to Hibbert’s better score on the 18th hole, thanks to a 15ft putt for eagle by Matt Grehan.
Left to right are: Chris Boundy, Matt Grehan, Graham Forster, John Dunning and Brian Baldwin
The tournament was played in fantastic weather and the course was in excellent condition. Following the tournament the players enjoyed a three course meal and watched the British Open Championship on big screens.

Sweet success with help from the Chamber In 2009, after many years in Human Resources, Helen Gregory started her own catering company – Scrumptillious – using her home kitchen to produce sandwiches and cakes.
offers an extensive menu of homemade and locally sourced produce starting with breakfast at 7.30 am, morning coffee, lunches and afternoon teas as well as a wide range of hot and cold drinks and a speciality tea menu. Helen said: “The new facility allows me not only to produce my range of foods in a more efficient manner but also to increase my capacity. The funding from the Chamber has been crucial in helping me to move to the next level.” Helen’s company has long specialised in catering for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, christenings and other private events but has most recently seen significant growth in catering for corporate events.
Helen Gregory is tickling tastebuds in her new venture at Stapeley House in Nantwich. Picture by Pure PR
The café at Stapeley is also fully licensed and can house events if required. Several new social gatherings are in the pipeline including a book club, craft club and speaking club as well as cookery workshops. Free wifi is also on offer for those who wish to browse online or catch up with emails whilst in the café.
Now after five years of hard work and successive years’ growth in turnover she has, with the help of a Chamber of Commerce Loan, taken the plunge and moved into commercial premises within Stapeley House, Nantwich.
Richard Weilding, Chamber Loan Executive, commented: “Helen is incredibly enthusiastic and passionate about what she does. We had no hesitation in supporting her in growing her business with the all-important add on that she is creating employment.”
A new, fully fitted commercial kitchen facility is being complemented by a comfortable, elegant café area which, in addition to serving the needs of fellow tenants within the Stapeley location, is also open to the public.

Need a loan? The Chamber can help . . .
A recent article indicated that certain words are fading out of daily use and being replaced by a new generation of modern speak which involves words of our time such as internet, website, smartphone in addition to the dreadful middle class favourites awesome, essentially and absolutely.
The words we are losing include marmalade, fortnight, cheerio and drawers. The awesome thing about all this is that there is a body named the Spoken British National Corpus 2014 Project that is responsible for analysing thousands of conversations to arrive at these findings. Once again I feel that I am being swept away by modern times where I am still moving on from Shakespeare’s English let alone that of the Queen. It was only last night in my local that I beseeched the serving wench to slake my thirst with a flagon of foaming ale lest my stomach doth creed mine throat to be cut. (Still, he plays along with it and I tip him well).
A lot of what we see now is from technological developments although there can be no excuse for the sales speak that has brought essentially and absolutely to the fore. Both words are useless where in context essentially is superfluous and absolutely is an annoying way of saying yes. As a Chamber of Commerce we see it as our duty to move with the times and do what we can to ensure our members achieve their fullest potential by being in tune with current ideologies and future trends.
Times move on and whereas 5 years ago you might have considered your company performance to be marvellous, you are more likely to describe it today as awesome. Rather than catch the last post you are now more likely to ping an e-mail or text. I still remember solicitors’ letters referring to my previous correspondence of the thirteenth proximo and their proposals for the second ultimo. Most of my complaint letters to Vodafone do include the odd bit of Latin – well it challenges the X Factor culture of the call centre generation but in general we should be glad that such expressions are consigned to history.
Business Loans Executive Richard Weilding
The real message here is that change creeps up on us and before we know it we are overtaken by it unless of course we can recognise what is happening and if nothing else then at least run with it.
If you feel you need a few groats (wonga with a small w) in order to at least stay on the treadmill of progress, then the Chamber has funds to lend for businesses that want to try and be ahead of the game. Contact me at the Chamber and you can be sure of a sympathetic hearing if you are seeking to keep pace with ever changing times.

Lexcel is developed specifically for the legal profession. It is an optional, recognised accreditation scheme for law firms and inhouse legal departments which gives assurance that a practice meets high client care and business management standards. To gain and retain Lexcel accreditation, practices must undergo a rigorous initial then annual application and assessment process.
This includes conducting background checks and an on-site visit from an experienced, trained Lexcel assessor. Andrew Tyrer, Principal at Tyrer Law, said: “While we are proud to have secured Lexcel for our 6th successive year, it is our clients who are the main beneficiaries. Mike’s mission to help sustain natural forests In 2002 the Tanzanian Government established a new Forest Act, which created a Participatory Forest Management Scheme. Under this law a forest dwelling village can be granted the economic rights and can retain the income from legal logging, in return for agreeing to sustainably manage a Village Land Forest Reserve (VLFR). The law requires the establishment of an elected Village Natural Resources Committee (VNRC), one third of which must be women.
Mike Chandler (right) with project officials and villagers in a forest reserve in Tanzania
After ten years spent supporting an innovative project in Tanzania, Chandler Associates’ Mike Chandler made his first visit this summer to see the impact of his involvement.
Mike spent a month in Tanzania, devoting most of his time to the project. There were meetings to discuss governance, strategies and finance as well as meetings with National and Local Government officials.
Away from his day job in consultancy, Mike is Executive Director for the Environment Africa Trust (EAT) - the funding partner for Tanzanian NGO, Mpingo Conservation & Development Initiative (MCDI).
Highlights included days spent visiting VLFR villages and their managed forest reserves. Mike met with Village Elders to learn about their forest management, whilst his partner Diane Davy had meetings with the women
members of each VNRC to understand the impact increased responsibility and income have made on their villages. Mike said: “These forests contain some of the world’s most valuable timber, notably the Mpingo, or African Blackwood. This is used to make high value musical woodwind instruments, such as clarinets, oboes and bagpipes, as it has unique qualities. These trees have been logged out (mostly illegally) throughout much of Sub-Saharan Africa but remain in southern Tanzania and in Mozambique. The MCDI project is working hard to halt their extinction through sustainability practices.” Mike has played a key role in obtaining grant aid from UK charities to support the project including four grants from Comic Relief. Accountant adds new firm to portfolio An accountancy practice has added seven new members of staff to its team after taking over a longestablished business in Market Drayton.
Seminar will ease Auto Enrolment headache SGW Payroll, one of the UK’s leading companies in the implementation and management of payrolls and supporting services for businesses, is holding a seminar at its Crewe head office to advise companies all about auto enrolment and how it will effect employers.
Chamber member Barringtons Chartered Accountants has completed the acquisition of Mercer & Co on Cheshire Street.
Barringtons, which has offices on Queen Street, will continue to operate both bases in the town initially.
A spokesman said: “Every small to medium sized company will legally have to enrol into a pension scheme over the next few years. With only now potentially three pension providers taking these new companies this could lead to a recipe for an administration nightmare!
All seven members of staff will remain with Barringtons. They include client service managers, Anne Allwood and Alison Galloway, supported by Enid Avery, Chloe Lewis, Daniel Large, Stephanie Newstead and Lynda Brammer who all live in the local area.
“This is why every company should act sooner rather than later to avoid the backlog and of incurring any unnecessary late submission fines from the Pension Regulator.”
Mr Wood, who lives near Market Drayton, welcomed his new team members and paid tribute to Mr Mercer, 55, as he continues to battle against cancer.
The seminar will be held on the 2nd October at 10am and will include information on choosing a pension scheme, tier contributions, record keeping and on-going responsibilities.
Mercer & Co has handed over a Steve Mercer (left) hands over to portfolio of more than 400 clients Phil Wood of Barringtons spanning companies of all sizes, from sole trader to limited company, including many with business interests overseas.
He said: “This practice has only become available because of the illness of Steve Mercer who is fighting backing with remarkable courage. On a professional level he is a very well-respected accountancy practitioner with clients who have been with him from the outset. On a personal level, he is a true inspiration to anyone going through the trauma of serious illness.” Barringtons has also unveiled new offices off Beam Heath Way in Nantwich. Hotel presented with two quality awards

Company launches unique shooting cover package Chamber member JSW Insurance has entered a new niche market with its specialist sub-brand Bulletproof Insurance. With target shooting now becoming an increasingly popular pastime, JSW Insurance identified a clear gap in the market for specialist cover designed to protect recreational shooters in todays ‘blame and claim’ culture.
Staff and owners of the recently renovated Best Western Manor House Hotel are celebrating two tourism awards. The privately-owned East Cheshire hotel has been awarded a Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor for receiving consistently outstanding customer reviews. In addition, after the hotel's annual Quality in Tourism inspection, it was presented with a Visit Britain Breakfast Award in recognition of its service and hospitality, as well as breakfast menu choice and standards. Steve Alty, sales manager, said: "TripAdvisor is the world's largest travel review website and it's great that the hotel and our customer service has been recognised in this way. We even received a letter of congratulation from the CEO of Best Western International.” "We use local suppliers for our produce and we have shared the news of our Visit Britain Breakfast Award with them too."
JSW Insurance – part of The County Group – launched the new Bulletproof Insurance brand to provide the UK’s first comprehensive insurance package for recreational shooters and firearms owners, without the need to join a membership or organisation. Costing just £29.50 per year, the package includes Personal Liability of up to £10 million, to cover shooters in the event of an accident and Legal Expenses cover up to £150,000, for issues relating to firearms licensing and/or firearms-related criminal offences. Qualifying legal appeal cases will also be taken on by Bulletproof’s team of legal experts who specialise in firearms law and have an excellent track record of success in appealing certificate refusals and revocations, and in fire arms defence cases. To introduce this innovative package to its target audience, Bulletproof Insurance exhibited at the CLA Game Fair, one of the largest countryside events in the world, which was held at Blenheim Palace in July. Wolfgang Dürheimer, Chairman and CEO of Bentley Motors and Edward Timpson MP meeting apprentices at the official opening of the company’s new Training Facility at South Cheshire College
Bentley Motors has opened a new dedicated apprenticeship Training Facility, a workshop and classroom-based institution, home to Bentley’s largest apprentice intake in a decade. The new facility, based at apprenticeship training provider Total People within South Cheshire College, has been developed as part of Bentley’s new manufacturing apprenticeship scheme, focused on strengthening core skills as Bentley prepares for the introduction of its SUV in 2016, and future growth.
This month their largest intake for over a decade will begin their training and will benefit from a new Bentley training facility and tailored curriculum. This is great news for young people in Crewe.” Bentley will use its own experts to design and deliver the skills and training on the apprenticeship programme, focusing on four core areas - Trim, Wood, Paint and Mechatronics. The new facility has two studios, one focusing on Trim and the other on Wood, where 40 apprentices will use workstations to train on practical elements. The programme will be blended with weekly practical sessions at Bentley’s manufacturing headquarters.

Absolute Recruitment’s hat-trick of Crewe Alexandra stand sponsorship A Crewe recruitment company has renewed its deal to sponsor one of the stands at the town’s League One football club for the third year in a row. The Gresty Road Stand of Crewe Alexandra’s stadium will remain the Absolute Recruitment Stand again this season.
“Similarly, we’ve found players and staff very willing to support our business, and they have often been seen at our offices on High Street. We’re currently working on ways the club can support our newest business, Absolute Health and Care.”
Husband and wife owners of Absolute Recruitment, Jessica and Dan Marshall, are keen that their group of companies continues supporting their local football club. “Absolute Recruitment continues to be immensely proud of the mutually beneficial relationship we have with Crewe Alexandra,” said Managing Director Jessica Marshall. “It’s a privilege that the name of our company adorns one of the stands and, likewise, being known as a sponsor of the Alex is great for the profile for our business. “The club has proved very resourceful in helping us to promote the work we do as a result of being sponsors of the club and, in turn, we have got closely involved in many aspects of the club’s activities, such as the Christmas party it holds each year for local children.
(L-R) Fiona Welch, Jessica Marshall, Dan Marshall and John Bowler
Crewe Alexandra chairman John Bowler said: “We are absolutely delighted that Absolute Recruitment is continuing their partnership with us. Yes, they sponsor the Gresty Road Stand at the Stadium but their involvement with us is much more than that. “The Football Club enjoys promoting successful, local companies and Absolute Recruitment work tirelessly to make sure that local people find employment. We try

to help in any way we can with that and are pleased that their brand has benefitted from their long association with Crewe Alexandra.” Dan Marshall added that the company feels strongly about supporting Crewe’s football club – especially because it is so well regarded locally and nationally with a reputation for bringing talent through its the ranks. “The football club is a role model - not just for the talent it develops on the pitch but also for the way it engages the with local fans and the wider community,” said Dan. “And this is why it’s so important that businesses like Absolute’s group of companies show our support for them.” Jessica and Dan have overseen the growth of the group, which now includes five local recruitment companies: Absolute Recruitment, Absolute Health and Care, and Summit Search and Selection all based in Crewe, Meadowbank Associates in Nantwich, and Bralin Recruitment in Winsford. Centre will transform life in Crewe As work starts on laying the foundations of Crewe Lifestyle Centre, Cheshire East Council Leader Michael Jones tells how the facility will transform leisure and health in Crewe. The facility will include a 25-metre swimming pool, teaching pool, fitness suites, adult and children’s care facilities as well as a public library. Cllr Michael Jones
This will be a truly amazing place for the town and its people. But as well as providing state of the art exercise, sports and recreation facilities, users will be able to access vital council services such as adult, family and social care help and advice. I hope to see this exciting facility up and running by the end of 2015. Yes, the scheme has had its critics for all kinds of reasons but now construction work can soon begin and once completed and in use, it will act as a catalyst to stimulate the growth of the town’s civic and cultural quarter, making that part of Crewe town centre an attractive proposition for commercial investors. I acknowledge the building work will lead to some considerable inconvenience but I am confident that the disruption will be more than offset by the enormous health and lifestyle benefits the centre will bring to the town. But there is a real underlying and strategic benefit resulting from this scheme and one that is not immediately obvious. Crewe is a town with several pockets of deprivation and low income families. It has an above average number of NEETS – 16 to 18 year olds not in education or training. Low or no income, poor diet and low self-esteem contribute to some unwelcome statistics for Crewe such as a disturbing level of health inequality, obesity,
alcohol and smoking-related diseases and an above average death rate. Personally I believe that providing quality facilities for young people and families to enjoy a healthy and contented lifestyle can not only help to address those problems, but can also stimulate an appetite for learning and developing new skills. Employers in Crewe and South Cheshire are crying out for skilled workers. Cheshire East Council has ambitious, visionary aspirations for Crewe. The UTC and HS2, new road links and business parks, housing improvement programmes, all will combine to make the town an unrivalled economic engine room for the North West and South Cheshire sub-region. The Crewe Lifestyle Centre will have its own part to play in this by providing everyone with a pleasant place in which to relax, stay fit and healthy and re-charge the batteries. ALL CHANGE FOR CREWE 27
Your chance to shape high-speed Britain: HS2 Supply Chain Conference - Registration is open HS2 has already engaged hundreds of prospective suppliers who have expressed an interest in business opportunities to date, gaining their valuable input and feedback. Undertaking a market engagement exercise at this stage in any programme is unprecedented. A recently launched ‘business’ section of the HS2 website (www.hs2.org.uk/developing-hs2/business-opportunities-aths2) will be regularly updated to keep businesses informed of forthcoming opportunities and how to compete for them.
High Speed Two (HS2), our new North-South rail link, is the biggest and most ambitious infrastructure project in the UK, and the first new railway to be built north of London in over 120 years. At £21.4bn, the construction of Phase One presents a great opportunity for businesses across the UK, from large to small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), to benefit from tens of thousands of supply chain opportunities. HS2 will need a full range of works, goods and services, covering many sectors, over the total programme’s 20-year lifespan. By contributing their innovation, experience and capabilities, businesses from across the UK of all types and sizes will help make this an exemplary project. HS2 is therefore offering industry the opportunity to attend its next Supply Chain Conference, to hear about the development of its outline procurement strategy and how businesses from across the UK can get involved in working on HS2. After the success of the inaugural conference last year, two events will run this year to ensure as many businesses as possible have the chance to be involved. The events, which are free to attend, will be held on 17 October 2014 in London and 23 October 2014 in Manchester.
These activities are just the start of an on-going dialogue to raise awareness and build relationships with the supply chain, ones which maximise the value of HS2 to both the local and national economy. HS2 is looking for businesses to continue this spirit of collaboration and start preparing now to seize the tens of thousands of opportunities across the UK that will arise as a result of the HS2 programme. Places at the Supply Chain Conference are limited - anyone wishing to attend should complete the registration form on the HS2 website. This can be accessed by copying and pasting the following URL into your web browser: www.hs2.org.uk/supplychainconference2014. For any enquiries about the event or HS2 Supply Chain Management, please contact scc@hs2.org.uk

A company typically employs individuals with a wide-variety of skills they can offer. Imagine the satisfaction an individual feels when allowed to use their skills to benefit a local charity. There is also an opportunity to make a very positive impact on the way people in the community think about your company. Do you have a reputation as a company that really cares about its employees and the community?
3 simple ways Cheshire Connect can help you get involved ·
Together we set clear objectives in line with your company goals.
·
Make meaningful relevant matches. Clearly define the scope of the project and ensure that appropriate skills are matched to the needs of local charities. Don’t ask a highly-qualified director to paint a wall! Make the experience mutually beneficial. Everybody learns, and everyone wins. Take a look at our website for ways in which local businesses UK Fuels, Bentley, Waverly have worked with local charities through Cheshire Connect.
·
Review, Measure, and Manage. It’s all about impact. The aim of any project we introduce you to is to add value to the charity, you or your employee, your ompany, and of course the community. We work closely with your HR and management team to incorporate your employee development objectives. It’s a very positive, creative way of developing your staff.
Research suggests that Employer Supported Volunteering schemes can motivate employees to join companies and encourage commitment. Had you realised that your employees can become more loyal, productive and turnover can be reduced by introducing meaningful skillsbased volunteering opportunities? Sharing skills can improve capacity in the voluntary sector more than any other type of volunteering, and those contributing their talent feel great satisfaction as well. In a 2011 study of 28,000 volunteers, 87% reported feeling extremely satisfied and 94% believed that their volunteering was a “core component or positive influence on job satisfaction.”
How It Works: Your local Cheshire Connect provider will visit you to discuss the ways in which you can get involved, the skills that your business can offer and the level of commitment you would like to make. It’s up to you how much time you donate. Every bit helps! Your Cheshire Connect broker will then match your skills with a suitable charitable need. If you are happy with the match and wish to support that charity then your Cheshire Connect broker will arrange a meeting between you and the charity. Once the scope of your support is agreed, your Cheshire Connect broker stays in touch as a link between you and the charity, to ensure that everything runs smoothly, to collect your feedback and to evaluate the benefits of the collaboration.
