Welcome to the Autumn edition of 4Front, the magazine for businesses in South Cheshire Welcome to the autumn edition of the South Cheshire Chamber’s 4FRONT magazine. Since the last magazine it has been an extremely busy period. You will of course have heard that there is a new president across the pond in Mr. Trump, the country is still coming to terms with the BREXIT vote, we’ve just received the autumn statement and phase 2 of the HS2 line from Crewe to Manchester has been announced. Many of these announcements can cause businesses uncertainty that affects confidence, but HS2 coming to Crewe is certainty that will boost confidence and will have a tremendous effect on the area. It already is having an effect, more businesses locating to the area, businesses expanding and the demand for office space is increasing. Many people have heard me talk about ‘maximising the potential’ of this area through major projects like HS2, but this will not happen without hard work and dedication between the private and public sector to make sure all stakeholders in our area benefit, while limiting the inconvenience caused to many. The Chamber plays a major role locally and our President, John Dunning highlights how the business council is helping to shape regeneration in our area. (page. 7). We help support the town centre, help young people through the Crewe pledge and drive the promotion of this area through Destination Crewe. Through constant change and looking to the future we sometimes forget the present, and we don’t take time to take stock of the fantastic individuals and businesses we have in South Cheshire. Yet
we did just that at our annual South Cheshire Chamber business awards (page. 19-22) that took place recently at Crewe Hall. It was an opportunity to celebrate all that is great in the business community and while we must congratulate the winners, everyone who attended is making a substantial contribution to the economy and it’s inspirational. As you will see throughout this edition, the Chamber has been extremely busy introducing new members to the Chamber, organising well attended networking events, funding businesses and assisting companies to trade internationally. I hope you enjoy this magazine and if your company has good news to share or you’d like to take advantage of the advertising opportunities, please do not hesitate to contact Jacqui Morris at the Chamber. Lastly, I am very pleased to welcome Angela Wilkinson to our Chamber team. Angela will be responsible for Membership recruitment and retention. We wish her the best of luck in this new role. May I take this opportunity to wish your business every success in the future.

CHAMBER EVENTS 7
A word from Chamber President John Dunning As we approach the end of another eventful year there is still continuing uncertainty surrounding Brexit and the changes in political leadership at home and abroad, and if I were writing on behalf of most of our fellow Chambers in other parts the country, I would probably be extremely concerned and frustrated about this situation. However, following the recent announcement confirming the line of HS2 and the creation of a Chamber President John Dunning maintenance depot locally, followed by the promise of increased investment in infrastructure in the Autumn Statement I believe that we can look at things more positively here in South Cheshire. That is not to say that we can be complacent and we are continuing through the British Chambers of Commerce, to press the Government to produce a clear plan and strategy that will create some stability and give business the confidence to invest in the future and to meet the challenges that lie ahead. We must also continue to lobby hard to ensure that we now get the Hub Station and that this is incorporated into an overall Master Plan for the area that will maximise the opportunities that will arise. Our newly formed Business Council has an important role to play, not only in ensuring that business plays its full part in the future Master Planning process, but that top priority is given to those
aspects of the overall plan that will have the most impact for the local community. At the top of this list is Crewe Town Centre and I am determined that the Business Council should focus on making sure that we work towards developing a dynamic and vibrant Town Centre that is fit for the future and which may be very different from what we have now. As I am writing this article we are waiting to hear from Manchester Metropolitan University about the future of its presence in Crewe. Although the process of consultation is on-going, we anticipate that the likely decision will be for them to withdraw which would be extremely disappointing and in my view ill-advised given the prospects for growth in this area and the greater potential for them to grow their services. Whatever the outcome, the Chamber will continue to liaise with the University over the next few years along with Cheshire East Council to ensure that we get the best possible outcome for this area. Further evidence of the fact that we can have confidence in our future was recently demonstrated in abundance at the Chambers Business Awards where we witnessed, yet again, what a great range of successful businesses we are privileged to have here and I would like to add my congratulations to all those involved in the Awards. I am already looking forward to an exciting and challenging year ahead, and in the meantime would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas. LOCAL NEWS 9
MP celebrates healthcare company growth to more than £31 million — the highest level in their 139-year history — and the company saw its highest annual increase in new members. Health Shield now cover over 250,000 members and their families. Not bad for a business created in Crewe and continuing to contribute to the Cheshire economy 129 years on. Health Shield operates for the benefit of its members, but, like many other local employers, it's also committed to investing in the community through charitable works. Employees recently raised over £4,000 for the MS Society by entering 48 people into the North West Triathlon. One of the best parts of my job is getting a personal insight into many of our amazing local businesses — finding out what makes them tick and what has helped deliver sustained success through often turbulent trading times. I visited one such local business recently, Health Shield’s Crewe base on Electra Way, to officially open their extended office space and celebrate the company’s recent growth. Formed in 1877 to serve railway workers, the non-profit friendly society provide healthcare plans for individuals and company employees. They've recently created new jobs, taking the company’s workforce to 135 in number, and doubling their office space to more room for their expansion in Crewe. Though Health Shield has a national reach, importantly they recruit locally, and put significant resources into their staff and their development. That investment in people is reflected in and rewarded by how they perform as a company, with their annual results showing a year of unprecedented growth: income rose
I was given a tour of the new facilities before a ribbon-cutting ceremony with two apprentices, and a question and answer session with staff. Needless to say Brexit was on many people's minds. What struck me though was that Health Shield is a microcosm of Crewe itself, developing from those railway roots and reinventing itself over the years — just as the town has. I love meeting businesses with locally-based employees, and Health Shield has recently gone further by expanding their apprenticeship scheme. It's great to see a company so devoted to the town that it is prepared to invest in the area and its people. They are perfectly set up to benefit from the anticipated growth that will come with HS2, as well as the post Brexit conditions. And they are just one of many. So if you would like me to visit your business, just get in touch. For further information about Health Shield visit www.healthshield.co.uk. Edward Timpson MP can be contacted on 01270 501725
Property experts: ‘Nantwich office market is buoyant’ The development is currently undergoing a comprehensive refurbishment under its new owners to create modern office accommodation for small to medium-sized businesses. Approximately 8,000 sq ft of the building is already occupied to tenants including Feeling Great Health and Nutrition and Ensure Safety & Training on new five year leases. Elsewhere in the town centre 1-5 Pillory Street, Legat Owen has been appointed to market this historic building following the relocation of its owner, Clive Christian, to London earlier this year. Besides office use the now vacant space has planning permission for three apartments or alternative suitable uses such as leisure or a restaurant, subject to planning. There’s also been healthy take up over at Alvaston Business Park, where Legat Owen has just completed the sale of no. 6 to Watts Gray. Watts Commercial Finance will operate from there. Legat Owen has been appointed to market 1-5 Pillory Street, Nantwich
Economic uncertainty has done little to dampen Nantwich’s commercial property market, according to property experts Legat Owen. The firm, which has an office in the town centre, has reported an active few months, completing a number of deals in the area including the sale of Princes Court to London-based FCFM Group.
Speaking about the town, Andy Butler, head of the firm’s Nantwich office, explained: “Nantwich has always been a thriving market town. It’s really encouraging to see the level of enquiries we’re receiving from businesses that are either looking to upsize or from those outside of the area that are keen to base themselves here.” For further information contact Legat Owen on 01270 621006
Legat Owen has subsequently been appointed to market the three office buildings, which total over 18,000 sq ft.

Visitor economy will support growth Tourism has the potential to create thousands of new jobs and pump more than £1b into the local economy, South Cheshire Chamber members were told. Speaking at the Chamber’s annual business luncheon, Cheshire East Council leader Rachel Bailey highlighted aims of the authority’s Visitor Economy Strategy which hopes to boost the area’s profile as a ‘staycation’ destination offering countryside, heritage and culture.
outstanding award-winning attractions, beautiful countryside and rich heritage and culture all of which can be accessed via two international airports and excellent road and rail links.
South Cheshire, said Cllr Bailey, had a great deal to contribute to the borough’s overall appeal and was well placed to capitalise on its diverse rural offer including pretty canals, marinas and farm shops as well as quirky attractions and huge festivals. She said: “We are fortunate enough to have a strong variety in our visitor offer with
It will build on the area’s already excellent reputation as a wedding destination. Today more than 70% of marriages carried out in Cheshire East are between non-resident couples drawn to its picturesque stately homes, gardens and hotels. The authority and its partners hope to encourage day visitors to stay longer by providing an intinerary of similar places in the borough to visit.
The industry is currently worth £807 million to Cheshire East and the council is helping to lead a campaign to drive forward growth and increase its value to £1.076 billion by 2020. Last year the borough welcomed more 15m visitors, supported by more than 10,000 people employed in the sector. Working with Marketing Cheshire and other key partners, the council hopes to attract 19m visitors to the area and jobs for 14,648 people.

Council calls for views on budget proposals Speaking at the Chamber’s Economic and Local Budget Update event, Cllr Peter Groves, cabinet member for finance and assets, said: “Cheshire East is a high-performing authority and a great place to live, work, do business and visit. Our residents enjoy good living standards and, when they need help from the council, we are consistently recognised as providing excellent services.
Businesses are being asked to give their views on Cheshire East Council measures to find £100m and balance the books over the next three years. Like most councils, Cheshire East is facing significant reductions in funding from central government whilst facing increasing demand from those who need support from social care services. The council proposes to meet this financial challenge through a mix of tax increases and changing its service offer. The overall aim is to make the council financially self-sufficient – by reducing its reliance on central government revenue support grant from £40m in 2015/16 to nil by 2020. It is proposed to increase Council Tax by 3.99 per cent to invest in vital frontline services. Half of this rise will go to adult social care. This follows last April’s 3.75 per cent increase after five years of Council Tax freeze.
“However, setting out our financial plans for the next three years is particularly challenging in the UK-wide context of big reductions in government grants to councils and rising demand for vital services such as social care. We don’t have the monopoly on good ideas and would love to hear from our local business community.” A public consultation on the pre-budget report for 2017- 2020 runs to January 10. Decisions will be made at full council in February. Comments can be made via the council website www.cheshireeast.gov.uk
Mother and daughter team up in working harmony gave Tasha a real life experience of university surroundings and the possibility of attending university in a few years’ time did not seem so daunting."
A mother and daughter enjoyed an opportunity to work together at the Chamber. Book-keeper Anne Xiourouppa of AMX Business Solutions Limited called at the Chamber offices one day with her daughter Natasha, known as Tasha, who is a pupil at Malbank School in Nantwich. The visit resulted in Tasha assisting the Chamber team with a small administrative task which she enjoyed, giving her the experience of working with the Chamber team in an office environment. The Chamber saw this as an opportunity to give a young school person a valuable insight into office surroundings and offered
Tasha the chance to return with her mother over the school holidays to further progress her administrative and organisational skills. Chamber member Anne said: “The opportunity echoed commitment by the Chamber which works with the Crewe Pledge to give support to young people to gain skills and experience. The location of the Chamber at the university campus also

The tasks undertaken in Tasha's term were the identification of business SIC codes, mailing projects, organising tasks and electronic filing. All were completed and Chamber Manager Jacqui Morris was pleased with the results. Of the experience, Tasha, 15, said: "I am grateful to the Chamber for giving me this opportunity and I have enjoy meeting and working with the team. I now have a better idea of the direction I want to go in after school."

Town centre partners work to create a bright New Year for Crewe store as a temporary art space was being considered while funding bids for cultural activities had been submitted. Long-term there will be highway improvements linked to HS2 but for now the town centre partners, he said, were looking to generate new ideas for short-term action. The hope to tap into Crewe’s huge potential, with large communities a short drive away, and ranking as the Best Residential location in the UK (Property Week 2016).
Crewe Town Centre Working Group are driving forward improvement ahead of HS2
Plans to revamp Crewe town centre are set to take a step forward in 2017. Speaking at the South Cheshire Chamber’s Economic and Local Budget Update event, Cheshire East Council Regeneration Manager Jez Goodman said a development partner for the Royal Arcade site will be announced early next year. Face-lift plans include a new bus station, cinema, restaurants and bars which will transform the heart of Crewe and give a boost to its night-time economy. Meanwhile a Crewe Town Centre Working Group, which includes the South Cheshire Chamber, Cheshire East officers, Crewe Town Council, Lyceum Theatre, Market Centre, Grand Junction Retail Park, Ansa and Edward Timpson’s office, are driving forward shortterm actions. These have included a deep-clean of the pedestrian area and various crowd-pulling events such as the Cosmopolitan Food Festival, Christmas Lights switch-on.

Mr Goodman said: “Already much work has been done to increase footfall. The Lifestyle Centre, for example, has welcomed 350,000 visitors in its first six months. Now together we hope to create a vibe around Crewe and generate commercial interest. We would love to hear from businesses with examples of what’s worked well elsewhere.”
A better retail offering is being encouraged through a ‘Shop of the Week’ promotion and trial parking incentives, including discounts, are under discussion. Also on the cards are new signs encouraging pedestrian movement between the Grand Junction Retail Park and town centre.
Chamber Chief Executive Paul Colman, a member of Crewe Town Centre Working Group, added: “HS2 will herald a new era for Crewe. In the meantime we’re working to bring about some positive change. Street cleaning, for example, isn’t ground-breaking but it’s one small measure which will help make a visit to Crewe town centre more uplifting. It’s good to be part of a partnership which is working together in this way.”
More greenery and upgraded street furniture will be part of the plan to make the town centre more leisure-friendly. Using the empty BHS

Survey pinpoints low confidence post-Brexit “Boosting business must now be a key task for the government particularly as forward confidence on turnover and profitability has flagged for firms across the UK. “The Prime Minister has given businesses some clarity on the timetable for Article 50 and on short-term and regulatory issues. This is helpful but needs to be followed up by a firm demonstration that the government has a clear and coherent strategy to defend the UK’s economic and business interests in the negotiations that lie ahead.” A survey by the British Chambers of Commerce shows the service sector hard hit following the EU referendum.
Firms were questioned between August 22 and September 12. In the manufacturing sector, 1,878 firms responded, employing approximately 160,000 people. 67% (1,266) of manufacturing respondents were exporters.
Its Quarterly Economic Survey, based on 7,000 responses from across the UK including South Cheshire Chamber members, shows manufacturing overtaking the service sector leaving firms concerned about investment, hiring and profitability.
In the services sector, 5,198 businesses responded, employing approximately 631,000 people. Of the services sector participants, 38% (2,001) were exporters.
Dr Adam Marshall, BCC Acting Director General, said: “While many manufacturers have seen a bounce in the summer, the UK’s service sector has slowed significantly.

16 CHAMBER LOANS
Chamber loan helps couple ‘clean up' the market place Magda Marcinkiewicz probably didn’t realise when she started a Crewe based cleaning services business in 2007, that less than ten years later, she would be the director of a company that now employs 25 staff, has some 30 commercial customers and around 70 domestic clients. Originally operating from home, business grew at such a rate that in 2014 she was joined by her husband Marcin, forming a limited company MM Cleaning Services (UK) Limited and moving to commercial premises at Bramhall Road, Crewe. Magda’s first year saw her managing one commercial contract and a handful of domestic clients. Via a commitment to the highest standards of cleaning and thoroughly professional client relationships, the business is expected to exceed £350,000 turnover this year. Marcin has brought additional energy and professionalism to the business and their roles now complement each other within their operations centre at Bramhall Road. Magda explains: "It was tough at first but once I had made the decision to devote myself to growing the business then I found that
people and businesses responded positively to a professional service at a fair price." From providing support whenever he could whilst holding down a full time job elsewhere, the couple made the brave decision that if they were to allow the business to achieve its full potential then Marcin would need to join the business full time. He said: "It was a difficult decision to make but we could both see that there remained tremendous potential for the business to grow further and we owed it to each other to go for it." The business has seen a significant increase in its commercial business and this has created some pressures on cash flow where notwithstanding their ongoing commitment to weekly and monthly staff salaries, commercial clients only paid on invoices. At this stage Marcin and Magda approached the Chamber Loan Fund for support to assist cash flow. Richard Weilding from the Chamber commented: "There was no doubting the commitment and professionalism which exuded from both of them at our first meeting. The solid contracts they had developed plus their ability to create employment meant that they were great candidates to receive our support in providing working capital finance." Their customised vans are now a regular sight on the streets of Crewe and surrounding areas and they remain committed to ‘cleaning up’ in their market place.

Fund helps businesses rise above global issues and succeed
Need a loan? The Chamber can help . . .
At the time of going to press the BHS / Philip Green saga rumbles on with acrimony between the two sides ever increasing and no sign of the core issue of the Pension deficit being resolved. A bit like the recently concluded USA Presidential election campaign the real issues appear lost in the white heat of personal assaults between the two main protagonists. For Clinton and Trump read Green and Field.
The political repercussions of Brexit continue to rumble on with International Banks now threatening to flee London and tough negotiations line the, majority perceived, yellow brick road to our stepping away from Europe.
Business Loans Executive Richard Weilding
All this reminds me of a meeting I attended 30 years ago hosted by Sir Bernard Ingham, at the time Margaret Thatcher’s Press Secretary. I suggested to him that having seen Ronald Reagan returned for a second term with a landslide majority, that the main qualification for political standing was no longer policy based but more down to personality. He refuted this suggestion at the time but given where we are today, particularly in the USA, then perhaps this thought now has a degree of credibility. Philip Green seems more enmeshed by the public perception of his sailing round the Med in his yacht, than the core issue of his tenure at BHS.
Perhaps therefore we should embrace the celebrity culture and replace Johnson and Hammond with Bear Grylls and Ross Kemp. Frank Field could be replaced by Ray Winstone and Theresa May when dealing with Nicola from the North could be replaced by Ross Poldark. All other international issues can be dealt with by Jeremy Clarkson assisted by Mary Berry. Sorted methinks. For those of you with more local issues to consider, the Chamber Loan Fund remains open for business and keen to help local businesses rise above these Global issues without the need for celebrity endorsement. A well-managed company with focussed leadership and a desire to succeed through hard work and enterprise is all we ask. If you have Anthea Turner on a PR retainer then you needn’t contact us. I am now off home to await Gwyneth Paltrow coming to fix my washing machine, the Duchess of Argyle and Sutherland to unblock my drains and the cast of Emmerdale to tidy the garden up for Winter. I don’t know which App my wife is using but I do miss Yellow Pages.

Chamber 20th Annual Business Awards prove a truly memorable night by Jan Roberts, Pure PR
South Cheshire Chamber 20th Annual Business Awards winners Tim Crighton (The County Group), Cate Walter (Rhino Safety), Sam McGarrigle (Beer Dock), Richard Alexandra and Gary David Smith (Prism Solutions), Gemma Thomas (South Cheshire College), Joanne Brown (Jo Jo’s Day Nursery), Bernie McCrea (Church Minshull Aqueduct Marina), James Healy (The Travel Visa Company) and Emma Bowman (Bare Bones Marketing)
Businesses that care about employees and give back to the community were the true stars of the South Cheshire Chamber’s 20th Annual Business Awards. The Chamber’s glittering milestone event paid tribute to those local businesses whose growth strategies have proved a huge success while focusing on staff welfare, teambuilding and a strong sense of corporate social responsibility. A sell-out audience of more than 200 VIPS, entrepreneurs and civic dignitaries joined in celebrating their amazing achievements during a memorable evening of celebration and triumph at Crewe Hall. Hosted by Redshift Radio presenters Liz Southall and Paul Boniface, the 2016 awards shone the spotlight on business heroes in 10 categories, including former start-ups back on the winner’s podium to pick up awards after proving best in their category. All winners were given the opportunity to plug services and products but most chose to talk about the various charities they support as part of their team-building and company feel-good factor. Welcoming guests, Chamber President John Dunning paid tribute to winners and finalists – and the many that have been before during 20 years of staging the awards. He said: “We were the trail-blazers for business awards in our subregion and many organisations have followed in our footsteps since. What is encouraging to see is how many past winners and entrants have gone on to develop and grow and are still operating locally.” Beer Dock owner Sam McGarrigle, Start-Up winner in 2014, won the KPI Recruiting sponsored Young Business Person of the Year after enjoying whirlwind success with his craft beer enterprise in Crewe and Nantwich. Now employing 10 people, and with new outlets set to open in Alsager and Leek, the 26 year-old said: “I live the dream and am very happy for it.” Last year’s Start-Up winner, Rhino Safety Ltd, was honoured with the Contribution to the Community award, sponsored by South Cheshire College. The health and safety business has supported 12 charities during 2016. Picking up the award Cate Walter said: “As a new business we didn’t have money to give but offered our time and expertise instead. That can make a huge difference to local charities.” There was success again for The County Group as Large Business of the Year, sponsored by Royal Bank of Scotland. With a strong emphasis on staff training, customer service and fundraising for the
RNLI, the company has enjoyed phenomenal growth and become an industry leader from headquarters in Crewe. Double joy came to Cheshire-based IT specialists Prism Solutions as winners of the ctchealthcare-sponsored Health and Wellbeing award and Manchester Metropolitan University-sponsored Employer of the Year. Judges were impressed the company’s dedication to bring back a ‘job for life’ and policies to ensure staff welfare and retention. Jo Jo’s Day Nursery on Macon Way, Crewe won StartUp Business of the Year sponsored by the Skills and Growth Company. Founded just 18 months ago, the business has invested in ongoing staff training and the latest technology to update parents daily. The award follows a glowing Ofsted report. Church Minshull Aqueduct Marina scooped the Excellence in Customer Service award, sponsored by Jones Sheridan Financial Consulting, after creating a local focal point with restaurant and meeting facilities. With a workforce of 30 and emphasis on developing young people, the marina has become a community hub as well as tourist attraction. The accolade for Exporter of the Year, sponsored by The Travel Visa Company, went to South Cheshire College which has created worldwide links with educational institutions offering opportunities for students to come and experience a British education while developing joint programmes and summer schools. Middlewich-based Bare Bones Marketing received the Small Business of the Year award, sponsored by Beswicks Legal, after proving its ability to provide an excellent service while donating time and resource to charities and education. James Healy, from the Travel Visa Company, carried off the Apprentice of the Year award sponsored by Bentley Motors as part of its ongoing programme to nurture young talent. James, 19, impressed judges with his skill and enthusiasm as he develops online media channels for Crewe-based company. More than 150 awards have been presented by the South Cheshire Chamber over the years as part of its mission to honour all that is great and good about the local business community and inspire new business talent to come forward. Crewe has future as high growth city
Chamber President John Dunning addressing guests at the 20th Annual Business Awards
South Cheshire Chamber President John Dunning believes Crewe has the potential to grow not only as a town but as a future city. Speaking at the Chamber’s 20th annual business awards, Mr Dunning said despite uncertainty generated by dramatic changes in local, national and world politics, Crewe’s economic growth was assured and the area could plan ahead with confidence. He said: “Following on from the Brexit vote, we have a new Prime Minister, and now we have a new President of the United States. We are also trying to understand what the measures taken in the Autumn Statement will mean for the future.
“What is needed from Government is a clear plan and strategy that will create some stability and give business the confidence to invest in the future and to meet the challenges that lie ahead.
formal Business Council which is part of the Chambers governance structure. This gives the Chamber a formal platform to work with the Council to help shape future economic strategy.
“In spite of all this uncertainty, there is one thing that I am very certain about – and that is that Crewe will go on to achieve substantial economic growth and become one of the most successful and prosperous towns - if not cities - in the country. These are exciting times for South Cheshire and the recent announcement confirming the line of HS2 and the creation of a maintenance depot here is further evidence that this is going to happen.”
He added: “Of all the aspects of future development opportunities the one that is at the top of everyone’s agenda is Crewe Town Centre. This is something that businesses can really influence and shape and I am determined that the Business Council should focus on giving top priority to developing a vibrant but very different town centre than we have at the moment.”
The key, he said, will be to develop an ambitious Master Plan that will completely transform the area with new roads, commercial, educational and housing developed in balance with the growth in population. Although some elements may be controversial in the short-term, there will be greater long-term benefits.
Meanwhile the Chamber is pressing for positive change to help businesses overcome existing hurdles such as access, traffic congestion and parking while offering finance to support business growth and advice on exporting. MANCHESTER METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY University celebrates Paralympic gold record Exercise and Sport Science lecturer Georgina Stebbings has worked with Dame Sarah for the last four years. She said: "I have been working with Sarah Storey since prior to London 2012, when she first started using our environmental chamber, in the Department of Exercise & Sport Science at the Cheshire campus, to train under hypoxic conditions.
There were special celebrations around the University in September when Dame Sarah Storey won her 13th gold medal during the Paralympics in Rio, surpassing the previous GB women’s record of 11 set by Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson. The University has supported Dame Sarah in her training in the run-up to many of her major successes - and previously also worked with Baroness Grey-Thompson. Dame Sarah first started using the environmental chamber at the Cheshire campus in the run-up to London 2012 and since then has returned to complete blocks of training around her competition schedule. Most recently she used the chamber to increase the temperature and humidity to be comparable to the conditions in Rio.
“Exercising in hypoxia is similar to altitude training but the 'altitude' is replicated in our chamber by reducing the oxygen content in the air rather than changing the atmospheric pressure, which is what happens when you travel above sea level." For each visit, Sarah typically spent an hour in the environmental chamber training on her own bike, which is mounted to a stationary trainer. Depending on the type of session being completed additional tests might be performed to collate some physiological data during particular phases of training. The Department of Exercise and Sport Science has a 20 year history of supporting Paralympic athletes in the fields of cycling, swimming, wheelchair racing, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair tennis. The English Federation of Disability Sport was
based at the Alsager campus for a number of years. In 1994 a project was developed focusing on wheelchair racing, initially set up as a joint project between Manchester Met University and the British Wheelchair Racing Association. Tanni Grey (as she was known at the time) was one of the athletes that received sport science support, which continued until the 2000 Paralympic games in Sydney. Both Dame Sarah and Baroness GreyThompson have been awarded honorary degrees by the University. Professor Neil Fowler, Head of the Department of Exercise and Sport Science, said: "Having supported Sarah's training over the last two Paralympic cycles it is fantastic to see her break Baroness Tanni GreyThompson's record and to become our most decorated Paralympian. It is with some pride that we can, as a University, reflect on having supported both Tanni and Sarah in their preparations and our involvement in Paralympic sport for over 20 years." SOUTH CHESHIRE COLLEGE Business Students ‘Think Logistics’ for future career choices Students were placed in groups, set with the task to build a small cargo to transport across a lake carrying goods. The cargo was made out of plastic cups, straws and Sellotape, across a foot long paddling pool. As an international online logistics company, representatives from Crewe’s AO workshop supported the event, offering real-life business stories from their company. Think Logistics was introduced through the college’s ongoing work with the Career Ready Programme, which aims to prepare young people for the world of work.
Business students and lecturer Suzanne Davies with representatives from Manpower, Career Ready and AO during an event looking at logistics as a career pathway
Rising entrepreneurs gained an insight into the business of transporting goods, through a ‘Think Logistics’ session. Business students at South Cheshire College participated in an informative and interactive morning, led by international recruitment agency Manpower. The aim of the session was to increase awareness among young people of the term ‘logistics’ before exploring possible career pathways within the industry.
Business lecturer, Suzanne Davies, said: “Think Logistics opened up new ideas for the business students through this very practical approach. They had a chance to relate the business course to local employment opportunities, which is always motivational for learners.” The winning cargo was named ‘Jeff & Todd the Dinosaurs’. Team member and business student, Matthew Beeston, said: “Think Logistics was really interesting. Before the session I didn’t know about the career possibilities that there were in logistics but now I’ve have had a really informative day to find out more.” To find out more about the Business courses on offer at South Cheshire College, call 01270 654654 or visit www.scc.ac.uk

Meredydd also outlined the £50 million investment which had resulted in the campus having some of the best specialist facilities and resources in the country, many of which were built with input from industry.
Reaseheath graduates celebrate gaining their degrees outside St Mary’s Church, Nantwich
Although studying for a degree could be costly, it would prove to be a phenomenal investment in later life, new graduates from Reaseheath College heard. Speaking at the Nantwich, Cheshire, college’s Faculty of Higher Education (HE) graduation ceremony, Principal Meredydd David said that an independent analysis had shown that spending £40,000 on course fees and living expenses would bring in nearly a third of a million pounds during a career. And he revealed that 94% of Reaseheath graduates who completed their degree last year were in related employment at a starting salary of £21,000 within six months, thanks to the specialist, technical training, industry skills and experience they acquired at college.
Land-based and associated industries such as food processing and manufacturing made up the country’s largest manufacturing sector, contributed over £100b a year to the economy and employed 16% of the UK workforce. This meant there were fantastic career opportunities available within this sector for ambitious and well trained young people. Reaseheath’s HE faculty had grown rapidly due to demand and currently had 700 undergraduates studying for degrees such as equine, agricultural and animal science, landscape design, food technology, engineering and countryside, adventure sports and rural events management. As well as those following the conventional ‘A’ level route, a significant number of students were mature learners who wanted higher
A £9million National Centre for Horticulture, the Environment and Sustainable Technology opened on campus less than a year ago, along with new science laboratories across campus. Reaseheath’s Zoo had expanded significantly to accommodate a greater range of animals and the campus farm had benefitted from a £1million investment in cutting edge technology. A further £31million would be spent over the next two years on projects such as new halls of residence for 300 students, an Advanced Agricultural Technology and Engineering Centre, a new sports centre with sports science laboratories and an extension to the Higher Education Centre. The graduation ceremony, held in St Mary’s Church, Nantwich, celebrated the success of over 100 graduates.

SG WORLD Tough Mudders join forces for charitable trust up in June 2015, in memory of SG World’s late Chairman Arnold, with the aim of supporting local causes and charities in the Crewe area. SG World already has regular ‘dress down’ Fridays and holds other charitable events to raise funds for the Trust. Leaving their comfort zones well and truly behind them, the team were plunged into sub-zero icy waters, navigated their way through narrow underground tunnels and, of course, waded through miles of thick mud; not to mention jogging and running the 12 mile track between the obstacles.

INTERNATIONAL TRADE 27
Translations business has your world covered Now, after attending one of the regular International Trade Forums staged by the Chamber, Emma, 31, has won another major contract. She said: “Following the Forum, we received a large order for the translation of legal documents for an educational institution for their foreign students who were coming to study here. The documents were translated from English into Polish, Hungarian, Turkish, Slovak and Romanian.
They say travel broadens the mind, opening our eyes to a world of different languages and cultures. For new Chamber member Emma Cheetham (pictured), travel also offered a springboard to a thriving business, ECLS Translations. Founded in January, Emma and her team of 75 expert translators help companies overcome language barriers which can often prove the stumbling block to success. They provide language solutions for major players in a number of specialist fields. These include technical translation, language solutions for automotive engineering firms, legal, financial and medical translation, as well as language solutions for IT companies and for the travel industry.
“So a big thank you to the South Cheshire Chamber and International Trade Forum for their support and for providing a platform to bring us together.” Growing up, Emma spent a lot of time travelling on holiday to different countries and was always fascinated by different cultures. With her mum working in travel, she experienced many European destinations and developed an appreciation of languages from a young age. During her French and German studies at university, she gained experience of different languages by travelling to see friends living in Japan and China. She also spent a year abroad teaching English language to primary school pupils in La Réunion in the Indian Ocean and Leipzig in Germany. After university, she went to Québec to teach English where she got to grips with the
French dialect. Then she undertook a Masters in Translation and Interpreting Studies while working in the legal department of the travel and tourism company TUI. Her first position was as an in-house translator in Cheshire, translating technical texts from French and German into English. She moved on to a different firm, where after starting as a proof-reader, she climbed the ladder to General Manager. She added: “I’ve spent some time honing my business skills and felt the time was right to go it alone. And business is going extremely well so far with orders from a variety of industries - financial translation (Italian company accounts), legal (Polish correspondence), IT (website content into Scandinavian languages) and education (legal documents for foreign students into Eastern European languages). I’m so glad I took the step.” For more information translation services visit www.eclstranslations.co.uk

A ‘Partnership’ approach to benefit all A strengthening relationship that connects South Cheshire Chamber businesses with the local community The end of 2016 sees the success of the relationship between South Cheshire Chamber and one of our most valued partnerships: Cheshire Connect a registered charity, deliver some compelling results. Through its local Business Connector, Dianne Parrish whom many Chamber members have met, the skills, experience and knowledge from the business community has been harnessed to support the work that charities do throughout South Cheshire. To date this year over 70 collaborations between the business and voluntary/ charity sector have taken place, each facilitated by Dianne. Encouraged by the outcomes, local funder; Bill Holmes, CEO Radius Payment Solutions has agreed to fund Cheshire Connect’s presence in the Crewe area for another year. Bill has supported Cheshire Connect since 2013. He commented: “I could see the value that Cheshire Connect was bringing to local charities and I was keen to help in any way I could. Donna suggested that I sponsor a Cheshire Connect Business Connector in Crewe and I agreed it was a great way for us to give back to our local community.” Cheshire Connect’s CEO Donna Okell said: “Bill has continued to provide such outstanding support every year since 2013. We have just celebrated his third year supporting the work of Cheshire Connect in Crewe which has resulted in some impressive success stories.” More often than not it’s the story shared by the local charities we work with that illustrate the value of Bill’s support. For example, a well-known local community centre has been able to grow and develop through the valuable input of a wide range of local businesses and individuals including business planning, financial projections and cost analysis, graphic design and HR expertise. Other successful partnerships have brought many benefits from sharing knowledge and ideas to drive innovation, to more physical exchanges such as sharing premises or operating costs to reduce overheads. However, collaboration is always at the heart of the work done. Cheshire Connect value their partnership with the Chamber as it provides the perfect solution for Chamber members who want to build or strengthen their Corporate Social Responsibility programme with the support of a dedicated, free external resource to draw on.

We encouraged almost 400 cyclists, both experienced and novice, to cycle over 31,000 miles in just one month. The calories burnt by all that activity were equivalent to over 3,400 Mars Bars! Participants can still keep recording their rides at www.lovetoride.net/cheshireeast and we are looking as to whether we can repeat the challenge next year. We have also been providing more detailed travel support to some businesses that have particularly acute problems with parking or access to their sites. Funds also go to Crewe-based Cheshire Young Carers which supports children looking after a parent or sibling with disability or illness.

Company is flying high after earning drone licence ahead to fly the machines for aerial video and photography. The company has provided audio visual services for conferences, awards ceremonies, road shows and other large events across the country for more than 10 years.
Gary Wrench of Crewe-based Code Audio Visual which has been granted a special licence to fly drones commercially
A production company has become one of few to earn special permission from the Civil Aviation Authority to fly drones on a commercial basis. Code Audio Visual, based on Crewe Gates Industrial Estate, went through months of rigorous examination before getting the go-

Director Gary Wrench, who works with a team of engineers, said: “Drones are an incredible piece of technology when in the hands of an experienced and licensed operator.
Gary, who began his career as a technician at Crewe Lyceum Theatre, added: “As part of the licence, we had to produce a 50-page manual on how we would fly safely and I sat an exam at RAF Benson, near Oxford. We are thoroughly versed in all aspects of aircraft safety and traffic control.”
“The Civil Aviation Authority quite rightly needs to ensure their safe use and we invested a lot of time and money in gaining its Permission for Aerial Work. We believe we are the only company in the area with this unique skill and expertise.”
Continual investment in high end equipment sees it at the forefront of the industry with digital audio systems, event projectors, large LED screens, video processors, video cameras and now two drones for aerial video and photography.

Celebration time for Xero Platinum Partner Barringtons Managing director Phil Wood said: “This status reflects Barringtons commitment to keep itself at the forefront of technology and to ensure that businesses in our area can not only benefit from the most up to date systems available but be prepared for any changes HMRC introduce in line with their ‘making tax digital’ strategy. “By introducing business owners to the benefits of cloud-based accounting, they’ve said goodbye to a mountain of paperwork, receipts and spreadsheets and hello to a system which makes managing their finances fast, stress-free and super-efficient.” Xero, a global leader in cloud-accounting software, allows clients to store and access data from a virtual platform – anytime, anywhere. Barringtons, now at the pinnacle as a Platinum partner, has a whole department dedicated to supporting Xero-based businesses and has trained all its accounting staff in the Xero methodology. Mr Wood added: “One great benefit is being able to keep tabs on how your business is performing on a daily basis instead of waiting months before a traditional set of accounts are prepared. “A busy shop owner, for example, can send details of every till sale straight to their accounting records so the profit and loss can be seen at the end of every day. “With all this up-to-the-minute financial information available, we can support, protect and advise our clients in real time. Auto-enrolment hits SME’s employers so far this year, many employers were of the opinion that most employees would not be interested, and would opt out. “Of the numerous schemes that Ellison Edwards Wealth Management have arranged year to date however, the opt out rate of employees, is actually less than 5%. Employees are very engaged once they learn more about the benefits of what auto enrolment means to them.” Amy Toft from Olympus International attended the event and said: “We found the session to be very beneficial to us as it highlighted exactly what we need to do as an organisation. We had previously been researching auto enrolment online but it proved to be very time consuming and at times irrelevant, whereas the seminar allowed us to ask questions relating to our workforce.
Emma Crowe, Client Director at CE Back Office and Will Ellison of Ellison Edwards Wealth Management were speakers at the auto-enrolment seminar
CE Back Office, an outsourced payroll provider, staged a free event for SME’s to help with preparation for auto-enrolment. The session organised by Emma Crowe, Client Director at CE Back Office, was held to give local businesses a clearer understanding of their auto-enrolment obligations and how to plan for staging. Emma commented: “We’ve had great feedback on the event. We were really pleased to have the attendance of fellow South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce member Will Ellison from Ellison Edwards Wealth Management. He was able to shed wealth of expertise on the auto-enrolment process providing an invaluable insight to attendees. “Will made the observation that during his initial discussions with
“We hadn’t realised how much work will have to be done every month just to stay compliant! There were numerous contacts there to provide specialist advice and we have since arranged a meeting with one of those in attendance, they are going to guide us through the process.” The Pension Regulator has announced over 200,000 employers have now staged for auto-enrolment. Between now and 2018 the Pension Regulator has estimated that there are over 700,000 employers still to stage. This means a massive impact on the volume of businesses staging and could see pension experts stretched more than ever before. COMMUNITY NEWS 41
Hundreds engage with police ‘Twitterthon’ event It’s estimated that more than one million Twitter users were reached during the event, with nearly 900 tweets posted across all Cheshire police accounts using the hashtag #CP24. Highlights included a look at the intricate work of our forensics team, training exercises for our puppy police dogs, and the important work of the Fleet Services team to keep our officers mobile. Cheshire Constabulary threw open its virtual doors to the public to showcase a day in the life of the force. The live social media event took place over a 24-hour period, and provided an unprecedented insight into the work the Constabulary undertakes to protect victims, engage with communities and deliver justice. The ‘Twitterthon’ gave everyone involved with Cheshire’s police force their moment in the spotlight, from call takers to custody officers, mechanics to dog handlers, and crime scene investigators to cleaning staff.
There were also contributions from the Constabulary’s human resource department, the Special Constabulary and even the catering staff, whose hearty breakfasts provide the fuel needed for the day ahead. The action carried on through the night with updates from our custody suites, call handlers and frontline officers. The event finally drew to a close at 7am this morning. Chief Constable Simon Byrne, who himself tweeted throughout the day, said: “The Twitterthon was a terrific opportunity for us to show what goes on behind the scenes here in Cheshire, and what keeps the
wheels turning around the clock. It was like a virtual open day for the force. “I think it’s really important that people see all the terrific work that goes on in the background to help our officers meet those challenges, which is what’s making Cheshire among the best police forces in the country.” Police & Crime Commissioner for Cheshire David Keane used the opportunity to spread the word of the work Cheshire CARES does to provide support to victims of crime who are often at the lowest point in their lives, and are in need of specialist assistance to help them cope and recover from their ordeal. You can still view the day in the life of Cheshire Constabulary by following @cheshirepolice and scrolling back through the tweets. Alternatively, search for the hashtag #CP24
Christmas safety message for South Cheshire businesses secure and not left open to stray sparks or discarded cigarettes. Rubbish should not be left blocking or hindering escape routes. It’s also advisable to build in a strict end of service or end of day turn-off and walk round. Ensure all lights, display lighting and fairy lights and unnecessary electrical equipment are switched off and all fires and open flames put out. Again, ensure escape routes are kept clear. Also ensure that all premises have a fire risk assessment. This will help identify all the fire hazards and determine if they are acceptable or whether steps need to be taken to reduce or control them. A risk assessment should be carried out by someone who has had sufficient training, and has good experience and/or knowledge of fire safety.
Father Christmas delivers business safety message
As shops and businesses stock up for Christmas, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service is asking for all escape routes to be kept clear and rubbish is locked away securely to avoid arson.
Simon Gibbins, Head of Protection at Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, says: "We are urging shops and businesses to monitor their premises on a daily basis around this time of year. Check the shop floor, stock rooms, loading bays and other external areas to make sure they’re free from obstruction and make sure all staff are aware of escape routes and exits so that, should there be an emergency, staff can get customers and themselves to a place of safety."
Business owners will be aware that increased stock bought in to last over the festive season can cause storage problems, but escape routes should not be blocked and this includes by rubbish which can increase over the period.
All areas should be easily accessible and free from obstruction, in particular escape routes and exits, fire alarm call points, fire exit signs and fire instruction notices and equipment.
Ensure all stock is securely and safely stored, keeping combustible materials and chemicals safely away from potential sources of fire and make sure that stock is not blocking or hindering escape routes.
Simon added: "Building these simple procedures into the daily routine establishes an awareness and avoidance of a potentially dangerous situation. We want everyone to enjoy a safe, peaceful and profitable Christmas.”
The seasonal period often generates more rubbish than usual. Make sure it is all properly sorted and safely stored, especially combustible card and paper. Make sure rubbish storage units are
