FOREWORD
Welcome to the Summer edition of 4Front, the magazine for businesses in South Cheshire Welcome to this edition of ‘4FRONT’. This is the largest magazine we’ve produced for many years. The reason for this is the enormous amount of good news in South Cheshire. The good news continues to roll off the production line at Bentley, with the fantastic announcement of £800 million investment by Volkswagen in their Crewe site which includes 1000 jobs with 400 based locally. The planned Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) will complement the existing range of vehicles which as reported in previous magazines continues to sell extremely well around the world. We should know as our export documentation department is kept very busy! Bentley is a real inspiration to businesses locally and flies the flag for our engineering excellence and skills base in South Cheshire. Hopefully it will be our engineering skills base that can make the most of the High Speed 2 Infrastructure project that was announced earlier in the year. At our recent Annual Dinner at the prestigious surroundings of Crewe Hall, our guest speaker Alison Munro, Chief Executive of HS2 Limited, explained the benefits of the HS2 development, not just about the need for additional capacity on the line, but how Crewe is well placed to benefit from the 50,000 jobs the high speed link would create in construction, rolling stock manufacture and station operations including a maintenance depot. Despite the controversy surrounding the project, “HS2 is going ahead” announced Alison on the evening and it is important that Crewe is ready to make the most of this development and grasp the opportunities available with both hands. On top of these announcements, there was more good news for South Cheshire with Cheshire East Council declaring that Crewe could be at the centre of geothermal energy deep beneath the ground. It is estimated that there will be enough natural energy supplies to heat every home in Cheshire East for centuries to come. It is in the

early stages of a feasibility study but indications are that this could be a big plus for Crewe and South Cheshire. These announcements continue to raise the confidence levels within businesses in South Cheshire and at the recent Jobs Fair organised along with Edward Timpson MP it was great to see nearly fifty companies with various vacancies available for local people. It is very easy to get caught up in the large headline grabbing announcements, but as you will see in the magazine, there are companies of all sizes performing very well and making significant contributions to the economy in South Cheshire with plenty of good news that should be applauded. It is clear that there are plenty of positive developments taking place in South Cheshire and more importantly there is more to come as long as we can all work together and be ready to grasp those opportunities that present themselves to us.

Good news for Crewe, Good news for South Cheshire and good news for the country . . . The SUV will go on sale in 2016. It will create over 1000 jobs in the UK – 400 of them at Crewe. Over the next three years Bentley will invest more than £800 million in its Crewe headquarters and the development of new models.
The Prime Minister on the production line
That’s how the Prime Minister welcomed Bentley’s plans to build its Sports Utility Vehicle at Pyms Lane. Touring the factory on the day of the announcement, David Cameron told workers “It’s a massive vote of confidence in the workforce of Bentley at Crewe. “It’s about your brilliance, your skill, your ingenuity that we are going to be making this great car here in Britain and 70% of the value of the car is going to be added right here in Crewe.”
The PM added: “One sector that we know is sprinting ahead in the global race is our booming automotive industry. One vehicle rolls off a production line somewhere in the UK every 20 seconds and we have just launched the Government’s Automotive Industrial Strategy to help continue this success for years to come. “I am delighted that Bentley will be building their new vehicle here, not only creating 1000 jobs, but safeguarding many more, as well as increasing training opportunities for highly skilled apprentices.” Bentley says the SUV will be a thoroughbred. Chamber Business Community Co-ordinator Nadeem Ahmad presents an update on the Portal When evaluating the essence of what a membership organisation offer is built around – information sharing, collaboration and networking are some of the key attributes that stand out. Membership organisations are not like a typical business selling products or goods. We’re selling benefits which are often intangible. These benefits manifest periodically throughout the year as notifications, newsletters, magazines, seminars, presentations, information packs, emails and networking opportunities. These benefits also happen to be the main uses of online social networking platforms such as the Chamber Portal, available to the South Cheshire Chamber Members for free, and as an integral part of their Chamber membership. The Chamber Portal provides a place for all of the key attributes of the Chamber membership to live and be easily accessed by the members. Through this platform, members can communicate, learn, contribute, share and network with the Chamber and other individuals and organisations that are part of the Chamber network. The platform presents the opportunity for those with shared interests to bridge information gaps, keep in touch 24/7/365 and effectively collaborate even if geographically dispersed. The Chamber Portal has been designed to serve as a place for member organisations, their staff, board members and Chamber staff to share valuable information and contact details around the clock—and within a trusted network. Organisations can post announcements, news, photos and videos and use the Portal as their main source of information about other businesses within the local business community. The platform can also be used to post blogs for thought leaders to share their insight, and develop groups for constituents to tap into the collective wisdom of their organisations. The Chamber would like to actively encourage members to participate in the Chamber Portal as well as invite new business to be part of the local business community platform. An active and growing business community is for the benefit of all involved and will help to create a vibrant environment for networking, information exchange, promotion, business development and growth. Testimonials “The Chamber Members Portal is an excellent package, easy to use, ...Love using it." Linda Ross, Medica Packaging Ltd. “Chamber Members if you haven’t yet started to use the Chamber Portal you should! Notwithstanding the fact that you can very easily advertise your company and its offerings via its capabilities you also have one of the friendliest and knowledgeable staff members in Nadeem Ahmad to assist who is willing to guide technophobic like me and maybe you get the very best user experience…enjoy and prosper!” Nick Bailey, Apex Selling

CHAMBER / MEMBERS NEWS
Edward Timpson MP Many of you will not be surprised to learn that our local employment situation has improved significantly in the last year.
And nationally, there are record numbers of women in work, fewer young people unemployed and more vacancies available for those looking for work. The claimant count is now lower than it was in May 2010, when this government came into office. The number of jobseekers in Crewe and Nantwich has actually dropped by 11.4 per cent, and whilst that's a very positive sign, there are still a lot of people out there we can help get into work. That's why, in partnership with the South Cheshire Chamber, I organised another Jobs Fair at Crewe Alex on Thursday 27 June. Since the Government took office, the private sector has created 1.25 million new jobs. Within 10 miles of the centre of Crewe, there are over 3,700 jobs advertised. Increase that range to 20 miles and it's over 15,000. In Crewe and Nantwich 2,050 jobseekers were recorded in June 2013. So the jobs are out there, and it's a question of matching the right skills and the right people to the right job. That's what my annual Jobs Fair tries to help achieve bringing 2,000 plus job seekers into eye-ball contact with local employers looking for fresh recruits. But's it's not just a recruitment fair. We have people on hand to provide advice about the skills and training needed to make jobseekers competitive in the marketplace. Sometimes it's a question of those seeking work understanding what extra they need in order to get the job they're happy with, whether that be gaining a workbased employer-led vocational qualification valued by business or getting some character-building volunteering experience. So whilst headline rates of unemployment vary across the country, we shouldn’t forget the real progress we're making in Crewe and Nantwich. But it's right that we aren't complacent. To be respected in the world economy and to push for growth, we in the UK need to do all that we can to back people who want to work hard and get on in life, and in Crewe and Nantwich we have to make our contribution to that effort. The Chamber, its members and staff should be proud of their key contribution that has helped breathe confidence back into our local jobs market. To contact Edward Timpson MP call his Crewe office on 01270 501725

Insurers go from strength to strength with new acquisition The County Group (incorporating County Insurance) has acquired Newcastle under Lyme based commercial insurance broker JSW Insurance Services Ltd. JSW Insurance has been established since 2003 and is predominately a commercial insurance broker. Alongside their core business of commercial insurance, they also have sub-brands such as Landlordsure.co.uk, Director Protector.co.uk and Verminator.co.uk. It commenced trading at a similar time to County Insurance, in 2003, and both firms will be celebrating 10 years trading this year. Dave Clapp, Managing Director of the County Group, said: “What really attracted us to JSW Insurance is that they are a perfect fit for us. They are a marketing led company and have grown their business in a healthy but controlled manner over the years, with an appetite to keep growing further. Their business has been extremely well run, with a loyal client base due to the excellence of the JSW account management team.”
Packaged marketing and translation service for new exporters International marketing specialists Tetra Marketing (Tetra) and translation service provider TW Languages (TWL) have combined to offer a fully managed and integrated approach to companies looking at export channels for the first time. Backed up by more than 20 years marketing management experience, rapidly expanding Manchester marketing agency Tetra has built up a valued portfolio of retained clients mainly specialising in the manufacturing, energy, construction and industrial sectors. The company provides a complete international and export marketing support service to help North West companies expand into new global markets. TW Languages delivers high quality, multi-lingual translations for business markets throughout the world. The company works in over 150 languages, and has more than 20 years of business and linguistics experience in project managing large complex technical and scientific translations. In recent months Tetra and TWL have worked on projects involving a wide variety of industrial products. Typically the process will involve Tetra providing marketing advice and guidance to the client in the early stages as well as developing a comprehensive international marketing strategy. Tetra is then able to implement any resulting activities using its in-house team of graphic designers, web programmers and PR copywriters.
The acquisition will see the County Group control in excess of £35 million next year, with a branch network of eight offices and workforce of 150. Mr Clapp added: “We have a business plan we are working to. With a couple more acquisitions and the same trend of organic growth that both businesses have enjoyed over the last 10 years, we are confident that our plan of achieving £50million written premium will be achieved within the next four years”. Nathan Walton, Managing Director, JSW Insurance commented “I’m really pleased about JSW joining the County Group – we have similar business philosophies and we see them as an exceptional fit to ensure our business and our people flourish. I know Dave Clapp and the County Management team very well and we are tremendously excited about our future plans to grow the combined business significantly”. For more information call 0800 980 3466
In one instance, having already designed and printed a corporate brochure in English for a key client, Tetra defined four key target countries and then worked with TWL to ensure smooth management of translation of the client’s corporate brochure into Chinese, Russian, French and Spanish. The entire process was completed within just five working days, enabling the brochures to be quickly sent out to the client’s distributors and also to be used at a global exhibition in Malaysia. A spokesman said: “This kind of responsiveness would be hard to replicate even within much bigger companies with their own inhouse marketing and translation teams. The service thereby offers great flexibility and instant on-hand expertise to any regional SMEs and manufacturing companies looking to take their first tentative steps into the export arena.” For more information on TW Languages visit www.twlanguages.com and for Tetra visit www.tetramarketing.co.uk

Emily Wilkinson with the firm’s latest recruit Rob Cooper (left) who is helping Dave Lloyd of the drains team
A family firm is boosting its staff numbers after scooping its second major contract with a housing trust. Nantwich-based environmental specialists Suddenstrike has won a longterm contract to provide drainage services to the Weaver Vale Housing Trust in Northwich. The firm, based on Welshman’s Lane, already carries out specialist cleaning and repair services in houses managed by the trust throughout Mid Cheshire. Office manager Emily Wilkinson said: “It’s a real coup for our newly-launched drainage division. “We had to tender against many big name firms but the trust was pleased with all our work so far. As a registered charity it looks for a good service and value for money. Suddenstrike ticked the right boxes again.” Suddenstrike has invested more than £50,000 in specialist equipment, including high-pressure jets and cameras which can investigate what’s going on underground and produce footage of the problem. It has bought new vehicles and is looking to recruit another three members of staff to man the drains division bringing its workforce to 15. Emily added: “A drain can get blocked for all sorts of reasons. Putting grease or baby wipes down a drain are probably the most common causes and of course the smell from a blocked drain is very unpleasant. Most of the call-outs are urgent especially at commercial premises where it can lead to loss of custom. “This has rapidly become a very busy side to our business. It’s great to be in a position where we can make new jobs for local people.” For more information on Suddenstrike services and job opportunities visit www.suddenstrike.co.uk

Emma Dalzell, founder of Bare Bones Marketing based in Middlewich, was included within the Council’s report as one example of how women at different stages in their life can contribute to the economy and become entrepreneurs. Emma was invited to the launch of the Report in London at a champagne reception at the BT Tower, where Jo Swinson, Junior Equalities Minister and Ruby McGregor-
Smith, Chair of the Women’s Business Council spoke about the report highlighting that there are over 2.4 million women who are not in work but want to work. There are also over 1.3 million women who want to increase the number of hours they work. The report highlighted the need to unblock this mismatch and optimise the potential for the UK’s economic growth. Emma’s case study was used to highlight the career choices after having a child - she decided to set up Bare Bones Marketing in September 2011 rather than return to a senior role in a corporate organisation.

SG WORLD Let’s get talking and create sales
Can your business live without live chat? SG World asked this question at the beginning of the year as part of our commitment to provide our customers with excellent customer service. SG World wanted to see if Live Support was an option visitors to our website would take advantage of, and if we would see an increase in our conversion rates as a result.
Live customer support is no longer the novelty it once was. The “buzz” is that if you’re not using it, you’re more than likely missing out on invaluable sales and support opportunities. A 2009 report by EMarketer found 25% of people who used a Live Support service went on to make 50% or more of their purchases online, with a 15 – 20% conversion rate for sales or sales opportunities.
Other ways we have helped customers include: helping them find the product they want to purchase, assisting with purchases on the website, checking the status of orders, answering questions about products and providing product support. Additionally, Live Support has helped us quickly identify and resolve issues with the website that might negatively affect the user experience or sales.
SG World has trialled Live Support in the Communications Department as part of a second phase in web development on www.sgworld.com, designed to optimise the website and make it more user friendly. With Live Support, a member of the Communications team can respond in real time to our customers and support their queries. SG World has found many of our visitors have questions about our health and safety or education safeguarding products, which can be converted via Live Support into appointments with our Sales Force – and sales!
For many organisations, Live Support has become a crucial part of their business. Initially used as a way to cut costs within call centres by giving operators a means to handle multiple calls and increase efficiency, it became clear that the real success came through the quality of customer service. And consumers do use Live Support; it can be a more attractive option compared to phoning for an answer that costs them more than the product they want to order! Appeal gets off to a good start
Smiles all round at the Cheshire Cat
A Chamber member has been one of the first local businesses to back an appeal to support elderly people in their final days. Phil Wood, managing director of Barringtons Chartered Accountants and insolvency firm BCR, donated proceeds from a quiz night in Nantwich to the new President’s Appeal launched by St Luke’s Cheshire Hospice. The appeal, which marks the hospice’s 25th anniversary, aims to fund specialist training for care home staff and a team of highly skilled nurses who will take their expertise out into the community. Officials want the growing numbers of frail and elderly people in the community, many of whom have dementia, to experience high levels of compassion and support as they would in the hospice.
Restaurant and bar The Cheshire Cat in Nantwich celebrated its birthday with a series of events helping to raise funds for The Cure Parkinsons Trust. Martha Hine with Chris Knot (centre) and Phil Wood of BCR and office dog George
Appeal coordinator Martha Hine said: “Encouraging local people and businesses to support a new appeal, especially in time of recession, takes hard work so our heartfelt thanks go to Phil for leading the way.” Meanwhile the hospice has said a big thank-you to all its volunteers who contributed 79,014 hours of time in 2012 – the equivalent of £754,000 at NHS salary scales. They paid tribute calling it a ‘truly remarkable’ service to St Luke’s. To support the appeal call Martha Hine on 01606 555685 or 07854 011805
The birthday bash kicked off with a performance from Amy Winehouse tribute artist Rachael Roberts on the Friday, followed by live music throughout the day on the Saturday. It culminated in a family fun day on the Sunday with face-painting, stalls and games. Local business KidzKitchen also put on free cookery classes to keep the children educated and entertained. More than £1,000 was raised for Parkinsons from raffles, collections and entertainment. Cheshire Cat director Louise Bastow said: “We wanted to celebrate a successful year of business and give our loyal customers a weekend of entertainment. The team worked exceptionally hard to make the event a success and everyone entered in to the spirit of the celebrations.” For a gallery of images visit www.thecatat.com

Untapped geothermal energy could revolutionise Crewe natural energy supplies to heat every home in Cheshire East for centuries to come. The natural energy source, used widely in parts of Europe, Japan, America and Thailand, is green, clean and cheap and has been found in abundance in Crewe following studies by consultants on behalf of the Renewable Energy Association. Cheshire East Council has approved to undertake a feasibility study into the potential of geothermal energy deep beneath the ground. Independent studies show parts of the borough are sitting on more than enough
Summer Edition 2013
Crewe is identified as one of just six sites across the whole country which can deliver truly renewable heat and power. A council cabinet meeting gave the green light to exploratory work at Leighton West. Council leader Michael Jones said: “This
feasibility study will take the first major steps towards exploring how we can begin extracting this natural source of energy from the earth’s crust and used first by the Romans. “It will place Cheshire East at the forefront of renewable energy innovations, simply because we have the natural resources to achieve a massive reduction in Co2 emissions.” The Cabinet papers relating to geothermal item can be viewed by visiting: http://moderngov.cheshireeast.gov.uk/ ecminutes/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId= 241&MId=4732

Jones Sheridan complete Coast-2-Coast bicycle ride for local charity for staff members. The charity works with children and young adults suffering from all levels of disability or learning difficulties. David Williams, Jones Sheridan Managing Director, said: “It’s fair to say that the Coast-to-Coast ride has taken up the vast majority of our free time since the start of the year and we’re delighted that our effort has paid off and that we’ll be making another healthy donation to The Wingate Centre, as well as The British Heart Foundation.”
A team including David Williams and Oliver Bridgman from Jones Sheridan Financial Consulting Ltd, based on Crewe Business Park, completed a 150-mile charity bicycle ride to raise a huge sum - the total currently standing just short of £15,000. The money raised will be going to The Wingate Centre and The British Heart Foundation. Jones Sheridan have supported The Wingate Centre, based in Nantwich, for a number of years, donating money to the charity from their annual golf day and recently purchasing new uniforms
In their latest fundraising venture for the centre, the 12-man team drove from Crewe to Morecambe on the West coast, where they started on the seafront, heading out onto flat ground at about 9.45am on Saturday 15th June. By lunchtime, the team had reached Settle, a town on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, along the route to their target for their halfway stop-off point of Harrogate, where they would be spending the Saturday night. The first challenge for Jones Sheridan came heading out of Settle, where the road immediately climbs high into the Dales, with sections that include 25%
gradients. A bike chain exploded under the pressure of powering uphill, with bike and rider having to be ferried back to Settle for repairs in the local bike shop. After 8 hours in the saddle, the team made it to Harrogate. In the morning, they began their second leg; a planned 70 miles from Harrogate to Bridlington, skirting across the top of York before heading due East to the finishing point, again on the beachfront. With the hard toil of the previous day still fresh in their mind, the riders were apprehensive leaving Harrogate at 9.00am sharp. Happily, they only had to put up with a handful of wrong turns (a combination of sat nav error and human map reading), with a comparatively easy trip, along much flatter roads. Late in the afternoon on the Sunday, the team arrived victorious into Bridlington, reaching the coast and treating themselves to some well deserved fish, chips and mushy peas! ‘Free after Three’ parking is underway Motorists will enjoy free car parking as part of a new initiative by Cheshire East Council.
Parking on seven car parks across the borough will be free of charge from 3pm each day.
The council has introduced the changes in a bid to support businesses and encourage more people to visit their local town or village centre – a move welcomed by the South Cheshire Chamber. Earlier this year, the council announced that Free after Three would be trialled on the Whalley Hayes car park, in Macclesfield. Now six more car parks at: Christchurch in Crewe; Snow Hill in Nantwich; South Street in Alderley Edge; Back Park Street in Congleton; Spring Street in Wilmslow and Princess Street in Knutsford will benefit from the scheme.
Cllr David Topping, Cabinet member in charge of the environment, said: “I am pleased to announce this initiative, which is designed to help our businesses during what I realise are difficult trading conditions on the high street.” Free after Three will be reviewed after six months.

The SkillShare initiative aims to promote local, skilled volunteering by matching local business people and other professionals who are willing to volunteer their skills with suitable charities and community groups that require their services.
UK Fuels ensured the charity was in line with current employment legislation and had a suitable HR structure in place for the charity’s employees.
SkillShare successfully connected CLASP with four Crewe based companies; Three29design, a design studio; SG World, a commercial organisation providing health, safety and financial auditing products through software or print; Martin Bale a Utilities Specialist and UK Fuels Ltd who have provided HR support and advice. All four companies offered specialist advice to the charity free of charge. Three29design helped develop a new website and brand for CLASP. Livia Lucie, company owner commented: “After working for so long with overseas clients who I've never met face to face, it's really nice to be able to help out those in my local community. Thanks to SkillShare I was teamed up with South Cheshire CLASP to help them as their branding and website. Very often Charities can overlook these points, whether it's down to time, money or just not knowing how. I've loved working on the project and being able to help CLASP get onto the right track.” SG World provided marketing and communications advice and support and enhanced their social media outlets. Steve Floodgate, the Communications Director, commented: “We were very happy to support CLASP as we feel that helping local charities is good for the community. Being a single parent myself I can also recognise the good work that CLASP do.”
Julia Brumby, Project Manager of CLASP comments: “We are now undergoing a complete transformation of our promotional literature and are about to take delivery of a new information leaflet, which is more professional, in keeping with the high quality of service that we delivery” “We are also part way through a new website design and have set up a Facebook page for parents, which we are very excited about.” “We have also accessed HR training, without cost, from UK Fuels and have had our Staff Handbook completely transformed, which is now in the process of being introduced into the organisation. Steve also saved us some time by helping out with a new staff holiday chart – a relatively simple thing, but extremely useful and effective.” “We are very good at what we do, but in an increasingly competitive third sector, we are aware of the need to become more professional and to ensure that our processes and overall image reflect the high quality of the service we deliver. With the help we have received from SkillShare we have taken a big step forward and are now better able to deliver our charitable services to local people.” SkillShare is always looking to expand its supporting network.
Martin Bale provided money saving advice to the charity. The event proved even more successful than last year with hundreds queuing outside waiting for the doors to open at Crewe Alexandra’s ground. The MP said the jobs fair gave people the all important advantage of being able to meet employers face-to-face rather than just sending in CVs. He said: “It was great to see so many of the businesses who exhibited last year coming back and we had more jobs on offer than last year.” It was an event for companies of all sizes, from those looking to recruit a handful of staff to big firms like the rapidly expanding Expert Logistics in Crewe which had 150 jobs up for grabs. South Cheshire builds on population growth and were supported by a quality road system. Mr Dunning said: “The past 12 months has been dominated by a stream of consultations on future planning policy, core development strategies and controversial planning applications. Having fully consulted its members, the Chamber has been able to submit a substantive and considered response to all proposals affecting the local economy. South Cheshire Chamber chairman John Dunning speaking at the annual dinner
Population growth is key to South Cheshire’s prosperity, Chamber chairman John Dunning told the organisation’s annual dinner. Housing developments, he said, injected life into a flagging economy – provided they did not clash with existing businesses
Summer Edition 2013
“Such a strategy of house-building and population growth will be controversial in the short term but we have to look at the bigger picture and long-term benefits.” Housing growth in Crewe over the past few decades in areas like Leighton, Sydney and Coppenhall had helped trigger major developments such as the MMU, Shavington bypass, Crewe Business Park, Crewe Gates Industrial Estate and Grand Junction Retail Park.
“We fully support some of the new housing proposals in the Council’s Core Strategy – some of them – not all.
And he pointed to the example of Nantwich where housing development in recent years had driven economic activity.
“New homes are needed but to be effective they have to be built on the right scale and in the right place. They have to have the right mix so they improve the socio-economic balance and do not conflict with existing businesses.
He added: “There have been some very encouraging statistics indicating early signs of economic recovery. South Cheshire has tremendous potential and the Chamber fully supports the growth agenda.”

NEWS RELEASE: “HS2 is going ahead” - says high speed rail boss Despite controversy, HS2 is very much on track and set to bring massive benefits to Crewe. That was the message from project boss Alison Munroe speaking before a large gathering of business people at the South Cheshire Chamber’s Annual Dinner at Crewe Hall who hosted and sponsored the Dinner showcasing their excellent banqueting facilities. The HS2 Chief Executive said Crewe was well placed to benefit from the 50,000 jobs the high speed link would create in construction, rolling stock manufacture and station operations. Although slammed by protestors for its £32 billion cost and environmental impact, she said the super-fast route was ‘definitely going ahead’ and remained vital to the country’s future economic growth. “One of the main reasons for HS2 is capacity,” she said. “Over the last 15 years
the number of people using the railway has doubled. Even in the recession there has been a 5% per annum growth and by the middle of the next decade the railways will be full. “The West Coast is particularly fragile. As well as carrying a huge number of passengers, it is one of our busiest freight corridors and if we don’t have that capacity we face a break in economic growth.” HS2 will connect the West Coast Main Line at Crewe, allowing high speed rail services to run on to Liverpool and passengers to change for services to Chester and North Wales. A journey time from Crewe to London will be sliced to 52 minutes. The improved connectivity, she said, would make Crewe a more attractive place to invest and do business. And taking inter city services off the existing railway, would free it up for more local services and freight movement.
She also confirmed plans for an infrastructure maintenance depot to the south of Crewe giving a major jobs boost. “Crewe is well placed. With Bentley and Bombardier it has a lot of the skills here already and we want to make sure you benefit.” Chamber Chief Executive Paul Colman said: “HS2 may be a long way off but it has already had huge impact on Crewe by making everyone stand up and take notice of its huge economic potential and excellent connectivity.” Work on the first phase - London to Birmingham - is due to start 2017 and be completed by 2026. The northern phase, covering Crewe, will not be in operation until 2032. A Government consultation is underway and roadshows will be staged through the autumn. 32 ADVERTORIAL
The World of Insolvency always looks better in the summer. Long evenings, warm days, optimism on every corner . . . But the economic picture is still mixed. The Chancellor is considering splitting RBS in to a bad bank and a better bank. The Prudential Regulation Authority has ordered British banks to find £13Bn to strengthen their balance sheets; that means more reserves and less lending, unless shareholders fancy plugging the gap. Despite the government’s efforts to advance funds so banks can lend, the regulator is pushing the lid of the treasure chest tightly shut. But there are some signs of growth amongst the rubble from the recession. Mortgage advances are rising, inflation is moderating, the erosion of household incomes is easing. Business opportunities are appearing. But what branches will grow out of this stony rubbish? Low interest rates means there’s been a flood of cash seeking better returns. Money is out there, looking for opportunities. There’s plenty of secondary lenders in the market, looking for a decent return on their money.

Cash flow problems can be driven by a variety of causes. If the business is fundamentally insolvent, borrowing more may be a poor choice; a restructure, prepack or liquidation may be better. But if the business is sound with a short term problem - a bad debt, an existing funder wanting an exit, a need for cash to buy stock or assets, or even a big VAT bill driven by better sales, looking for funding may be the answer. Show and business reception draw bumper crowd Sunshine brought an excellent crowd to a Business Reception staged on the eve of the Nantwich Show. Rocketing temperatures throughout July created perfect ground conditions, putting the show and reception firmly back on the social calendar again. More than 200 Chamber members and civic dignitaries were welcomed to the Cheshire East stand in the garden area of the Cheese Pavilion where they enjoyed an informal networking evening hosted by the Chamber in association with Cheshire East Council and Nantwich Agricultural Society. Despite rain on the day of the show, huge crowds were welcomed to Dorfold Park where they were entertained by dare-devil quad bike stunts and displays by celebrity chefs as well as a huge number of stands and the International Cheese Show.

Need a loan? The Chamber can help . . .
Recent calls for errant Bankers to be jailed has raised a few eye brows as the premise here is that there has been a complete lack of personal responsibility with individual misdemeanours cloaked under the corporate blanket. In an incentive driven world we cannot be too surprised at what has happened albeit as an ex-banker I do remain staggered at the LIBOR fixing scandal which for me blows away a large chunk of credibility for anyone in the industry - past or present. Accountability is a dangerous area. Where do we draw the line?
Like most people I remain crestfallen whenever I think back top those fateful penalty shoot outs at previous international football tournaments. However no one is suggesting that following England’s exit, we should have slammed Messrs Pierce, Waddle, Southgate and Batty behind bars for having failed their country.
A jail term may well have been more appropriate for their part in the dodgy pizza advert involving Messrs Pierce, Waddle and Southgate that followed Euro 96.
Some would say that the impact of England’s tournament exits was far greater than anything to do with LIBOR.
In business, owner managers face daily challenges to themselves regarding their accountability to a whole range of people including staff, customers, suppliers and not least of all their families.
We should not shy away from this responsibility for fear of repercussions being draconian nor should we dive headlong into ventures where other people may suffer through lack of prudence.
We remain open at the Chamber to help fund business growth and would encourage all owner managers to work with their advisors to ensure that they have a balanced view of their plans. I am also available to join in the process but should the current wave of recrimination extend its reach in the months ahead then don’t expect me to be on the gang plank with you. There is only so much flak and ex-banker can take!
The difference however is clear. The LIBOR fixing scandal was driven by greed and on the back of an arrogant wave of invincibility.
