Chamber Team
Welcome Well what a start to 2013, the HS2 announcement and the work has started on the £6m overhaul of Crewe Railway Station. Crewe to London in 58 minutes and the development of a maintenance depot in Crewe creating more than 300 jobs is a boost for the area and firmly puts Crewe back on the map leading to investment and growth. The Chamber is playing a major role in shaping the local infrastructure and economy through our involvement in the ‘All Change for Crewe’ regeneration programme and these announcements are fantastic news for the area. This is only just the beginning of the ambitious plans to revitalise and regenerate the town and the surrounding area. ‘All Change for Crewe’ is a private sector led partnership with Cheshire East Council and it is vital for the future economy of the area that it achieves its goals, but it needs the input of local businesses both large and small. The Chamber will therefore be increasing its efforts to gather local intelligence, in both Crewe and Nantwich to make sure the right decisions are made for the South Cheshire Business Community. Despite difficult economic conditions during 2012, the Chamber both witnessed and spoke to businesses who had enjoyed tremendous success and bucked the national trend. The evidence to support this was clear to see at our Annual Business Awards at Crewe Hall. There is no reason why local success will not continue this year especially with the confidence boosting announcement of HS2 for Crewe.
International trade advice and support is always a priority for the Chamber and last year saw the introduction of an ‘Export Club’, which provides members with the opportunity to learn about exporting goods abroad, share best practice and find out how the Chamber can help. Increasing International Trade is vitally important to the recovery of the local economy and this is highlighted by the success shown by Bentley Motors, who last year increased their exporting figures by 22%, to maintain their position as the leading manufacturer of luxury vehicles in the world. I hope you enjoy this edition of 4FRONT and I encourage all Members to submit articles for future magazines. So it is with great optimism that the Chamber enters 2013 and we will be doing our utmost to ensure the views of business are heard and on behalf of the Chamber I would like to wish you a happy and prosperous year and remember that the Chamber Team is here to assist you and your business, so please do not hesitate to contact the Chamber.

Samantha Norris, Mark Trotter and Colin Starkey came to the rescue of The White Lion in Weston last October and set about a sympathetic restoration scheme behindthe-scenes and front-of-house. ANNUAL BUSINESS AWARDS
Rewards for the crème de la crème of the area’s businesses All that is great and good about the area’s local businesses was celebrated at the 16th South Cheshire Chamber Annual Business Awards in association with Crewe Chronicle. The event proved yet again that there’s nothing like a global recession to remind communities just how important local businesses are - creating employment, boosting local economies, and improving the general well-being of citizens. And it highlighted the many examples of South Cheshire companies that have more than just weathered the storm. Rewarded were the entrepreneurs whose ideas and enthusiasm have launched new ventures, managers who have inspired change and improvement, and staff whose flexibility and hard work has kept businesses profitable. More than 200 people attended the glittering night at Crewe Hall where, in his opening address, Chamber chairman John Dunning applauded all those nominated and paid special tribute to businesswomen and young entrepreneurs who were forging Crewe’s modern economic profile. “There are no losers,” he explained, as all had played a part in helping the local economy rebuff the worst effects of the recession. Despite an economy showing little sign of significant recovery for several years yet, South Cheshire, he said, continued to perform relatively well, generating many success stories. He said: “The awards show what a tremendous range of successful businesses and what an array of talented individuals we have here in South Cheshire.” Martinus Louwerse general manager of Crewe Hall Hotel hailed 2012 a ‘fantastic year’ and praised his hardworking team after scooping Large Business of the Year. Since 2006 the hotel has benefitted from £13.5m of investment in new facilities. Bedrooms have increased from 65 to the current total of 117 to allow for larger events to be accommodated at the hotel and in 2008 a new Events Centre, Leisure Club and Spa were opened to meet the increasing demand for high quality meetings and events facilities and the growing demands from the leisure market. Young Business Person of the Year James Macfarlane, 27, of Jaymac Electrical said his watch words were ‘Professional, Competitive, Reliable and Friendly’ and said ‘hard work’ had paid off. At 27, James has enjoyed a diverse career all working

Acting Chief Executive Paul Colman congratulated all those nominated who had contributed to South Cheshire’s growing profile as a world class economic player. Fundraising on the evening was dedicated to The One in Eleven Appeal. It contributed £1000 to the fund to build a neo-natal unit at Crewe’s Leighton Hospital.

ALL CHANGE FOR CREWE
ACFC backs the high-speed revolution
The Chamber has welcomed HS2 The new high speed rail, designed to cut travel times and ease overcrowding, is also aimed to boost regional economies by creating tens of thousands of jobs, says the Government. Speaking immediately after the announcement, John Dunning, chairman of the South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “It’s wonderful and a great opportunity for Crewe. It is bringing the railway home of Crewe. What we will do now is encourage the business community to get behind it.”
ON BOARD: Home Secretary Theresa May with South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce chairman John Dunning (left) and chairman of the All Change for Crewe board John Lea
Key players in a special partnership set up to drive forward Crewe’s regeneration have heralded HS2 as a ‘new beginning’ for the town. All Change for Crewe (ACFC) says the high speed rail link cutting journey times from Crewe to London in just 58 minutes will put the town back on the map for its excellent location and help restore its reputation as a good place to live and do business. John Lea, chairman of the ACFC board, said: “This is the most exciting news for a generation. “Crewe was invented by the railway 175 years ago and, inevitably, was showing signs of its age but the fact that it is going to be rejuvenated by the railway once again is fantastic news. “It’s great for the economy and all the people who live in the area. A new beginning for a town famed for rail travel.” With members drawn from the public and private sector, ACFC was founded to help deliver a strategy for the sustainable growth of Crewe. Key areas include the long-term physical renewal and development of the town with actions to improve economic prospects and social conditions for its residents. Mr Lea, managing director of Mornflake in Crewe, added: “Local people have suffered years of broken and empty promises. There has been a lot of talk and schemes to transform the town which have come and gone. “But at the station they can at last see some significant progress. Already a £6m scheme is underway to revitalise its facilities and now they have news of a multi-billionpound investment in HS2.
Winter Edition 2012/2013
“Although a long way off, it creates a positive vibe about the town. There’s every reason for this announcement to act as a platform for restoring civic pride. Crewe is famed for its rail station, engineering excellence and diverse economy but still doesn’t get the credit it deserves. Now that could change.” Regional media was out in force to capture reaction when Home Secretary Theresa May arrived at Platform 6. ACFC members, South Cheshire Chamber officials and council leaders discussed the plan in a private meeting soon after the official announcement. Reporters heard how the second phase of the HS2 project, the Y-shaped network north of Birmingham to Manchester and Leeds, will pass directly through Crewe. The proposed route will pass under Crewe town centre in a specially-constructed tunnel with a rail spur ensuring Crewe is the critical junction between the new line and the West Coast Main Line. Travelling up to 225mph, the super-fast trains are expected to have airy compartments and a glass roof as well as TVs and computer screens for travellers. Mr Lea added: “If you picture the UK as a whole, Crewe is almost smack bang in the middle of that. I reckon around 30% of the UK population is within 100 miles. This is a fantastic location and HS2 underlines that.”
The new 211-mile Y-shaped route heading north from Birmingham will see two new stations built at Mancheste - one alongside the existing Piccadilly Station, and the other, an interchange by the M56 between Warburton Green and Davenport Green serving Manchester Airport. There will also be new stations in the East Midlands, Sheffield and Leeds. For South Cheshire, there will be a "dedicated link" alongside the highspeed line at Crewe. Although Crewe is not earmarked for a new station, it is on the high speed line and will link up with standard trains. This will reduce travel times to cities like Liverpool. However the high speed rail is a long way off. The first phase – from London to Birmingham – is due to be finished in 2026. The second phase, which covers Crewe, is not due to be completed until 2032.

In Europe deliveries grew by 12% with 1,333 cars delivered to customers (1,187 in 2011). The increasing popularity of the Bentley

I have made sure that my first police and crime plan reflects this area of policing and I intend to make it my business to ensure that the police work hard to further reduce crimes such as robbery from businesses, theft by employees, shoplifting and making off without payment.”
John Dwyer added, “The figures for business crime in Cheshire are very low. Last year just 91 business robberies were reported, a 14% decrease on the previous year. Commercial burglary fell by 16 %. In this economic climate, the police and businesses need to work together to ensure that we are doing all we can. I have seen some great work being done by the police at ground level; for example, in helping to prevent people making off from fuel stations without paying.” Paul Colman commented “Business crime is low in Cheshire, but that does not mean we should be complacent. The Chamber will be working closely with local businesses to address any concerns they may have and find solutions to prevent criminal activity. I encourage businesses to contact the Chamber if they are having any problems with crime in their business” Contact the Chamber on 01270 504700 or email info@sccci.co.uk
Family business celebrates a record year providing pest control, wildlife management and groundwork services to homes and firms across the country. This year it also won a contract to provide repair and improvement services to Weaver Vale Housing Trust in Northwich. That came hot on the heels of a two-year countrywide contract with DEFRA. TOP TEAM: Suddenstrike staff celebrate a record year
A Nantwich company is ending the year on a high after scooping another major contract. Environmental specialists Suddenstrike has fended off competition from companies across the country to provide wildlife safety control measures on railway embankments along the Great Northern and Great Eastern line in Lincolnshire. It means more new jobs will be created at the firm which was founded by father-of-two Steve Wilkinson in 1997 with just one van. Now with a workforce of 11 and a fleet of 10 vans and trucks the family business is
Staff numbers have increased from seven to 11 and in the New Year another three jobs are being created for pest control technicians and a grounds worker to boost the new drains repair arm to its business. Mr Wilkinson, who runs the business with his son and daughter, James and Emily, will also be investing £60,000 in new vehicles. Emily said: “This has been a phenomenally busy year and while we have become a national name in pest control, groundwork and wildlife management, we are very much committed to our local roots. The phrase ‘no job is too small’ is our mantra and we always aim to recruit staff locally.”

Food lovers serve up £2m boost to town Festival chairman Deborah Robb said: “Attendance was a great success, bringing a much-needed lift to local business. An incredible 100% of visitors said they enjoyed the festival, with 69% saying they had a most wonderful time. “Some 31% of visitors spent between £50 and £100 in local shops while almost 20% spent over £100.
CROWDED: The festival drew bumper crowds to Nantwich
Nantwich Food and Drink Festival set tills ringing to the tune of more than £2m, a new report has revealed. Traders reaped the benefits of streets thronged with more than 30,000 visitors, with many doubling their takings at a time when things generally quieten down for tourism in September.
“With the estimated number of visitors being 30,000 people, we are thrilled to announce over £2m spent in town over festival weekend.”
All attracted huge crowds who enjoyed samples of fine food and drink from around the world.
Foodies flocked to enjoy attractions which included a Gourmet Food Court and marquee filled with fine foods on the Bowling Green car-park as well as a food demonstration theatre on the town square.
An economic analysis carried out by festival organisers also showed more people willing to spend greater amounts in local shops. While the vast majority spent under £50, growing numbers shelled out £100 plus on goods including clothes, jewellery and household goods.
MOUTHFUL: Ashley Barrow, from Nantwich, samples an ostrich burger
Main sponsors were Mornflake, Cheshire East Council, Nantwich Town Council and Bentley again in 2012.
Most of the 141 town traders who responded to a survey carried out by festival volunteers were overwhelmed by the boost to trade. One fashion shop reported a 134% increase in trade. A confectionary shop ran out of ice cream, a café sold an extra 100 scones and a baker’s pork pies were snapped up at a rate of 300 a day.
Nantwich Civic Hall was turned into a food-lovers paradise while shops across town staged quirky food and drink making competitions, quizzes and demonstrations. They demonstrated making their pies, biscuits, pizzas and cakes while non-food shops offered special festival discounts.
The new food court behind the Gourmet Food Hall marquee on the Bowling Green car-park was a hit with families who enjoyed food from around the world including Thai, Indian and Caribbean as well as noodles, pizza and ostrich burgers

Solicitor marks move with mediation open events of open days at a family law firm. Solicitor David Lago is marking the launch of his family law and mediation centre in Nantwich by staging events highlighting how mediation can help resolve hotly-contested financial and property disputes as well as clashes over children. Free advice sessions about mediation are being staged at his new office in George House, off Beam Heath Way near Sainsbury’s. Couples caught up in the crossfire of divorce and relationship breakdown are being offered free mediation advice during a series
Winter Edition 2012/2013
Mr Lago, who was previously based in Crewe, said: “The breakdown of any relationship is a harrowing time but so many important decisions have to be made, such as division of assets and arrangements for children.
“Professional mediation gives parties the opportunity to meet in a neutral environment where they can put feelings aside and negotiate a final settlement which is fair to them and any children of the partnership. All this is less painful, and considerably cheaper, than sitting opposite each other in a courtroom.” Mediation is available to divorced or separated couples. As of spring 2011, it became necessary for parties to consider mediation before going down the route of costly court battles. Crewe Hall’s Steve rallies to the support of charity
Cheshire firm launches Retail Support package A Cheshire based accountancy firm has recently launched a Retail Support Package designed to help Cheshires’ independent retailers increase footfall, strengthen their cashflow and improve their profitability. Mercer & Co Accountants, based in Beam Heath Way, Nantwich have spent the last three years developing a unique level of support specifically for the smaller retailer.
Crewe Hall maintenance man Steve Murrell (pictured) is a driving force when it comes to fundraising after completing a cross-Europe rally in his 18 year-old car. Steve raised £2,000 for The Wingate Centre in the L-registered VW Polo he paid just £50 for four years ago and has driven every day since after carrying out all the mechanical repairs himself on his driveway. The Crewe dad took part in the 2,400 mile Screwball Rally crossing though France, Belgium, Germany, Italy and Switzerland, sponsored by workmates at the iconic hotel which covered his fuel for the marathon. At his side was his 22 year-old son Kieran who has often borrowed the car to drive up to Hull University. Steve said: “One of our receptionists was going to scrap the car because it needed a new petrol tank. I bought it and fitted a new tank and it’s never let me down since. “It has failed its MOT only once, which was the last one, but after spending £130 on
E-Bay for spares, I repaired it and it’s running like a dream again.” The car, now on 81,000 miles, needed new springs, shock absorbers, wheel bearings and brake linings. No trouble to Steve who has kept all things mechanical running smoothly at the hotel for 15 years. Crewe Hall general manager Mart Louwerse said “Steve was an example of why Crewe Hall scooped ‘Best Large Business’ at the South Cheshire Chamber awards in November”. He said: “We have several members of staff who have notched up long service. They love their job and contribute to the happy atmosphere and smooth running of our hotel. “Steve is a great member of the team and we are all very proud of his achievement which raised a grand sum for The Wingate Centre, a worthy cause and our chosen charity.” Steve is planning another European rally next autumn – in the same car.

MD of Mercer & Co, Mr Steve Mercer, said that the independent retailer has had a rough time throughout this current recession but most of the supermarkets have grown consistently so we examined what they were doing to make themselves ‘recession proof’. “….retailing at a national level is now a science and sales are monitored in ‘real time’.” said Mr Mercer, “Clearly that is too complex and expensive for smaller retailers so we have taken the systems and techniques that the supermarkets use and distilled them into an effective tool-kit that any independent retailer can use.” Mercer & Co’s unique support package is now tried and tested and is helping retailers in Cheshire to regain lost market share. Steve Mercer said that, with the use of digital cameras, they had recently helped a franchisee identify flaws in their shop layout resulting in lost sales. These flaws have now been addressed and the franchise company are very interested in how it has helped with customer flow and revenue. This is not the kind of support that you might expect from your local accountancy firm but Mercer & Co is no ordinary accountancy firm as they are constantly looking for new and groundbreaking ways of helping their clients. According to the firm’s administrator, Sue Mercer, “….clients are continually praising us for the high level of innovative support that they receive.” “Independent retailers have to become more proactive in the way they manage their businesses if they wish to survive in these harsh economic times and using Mercer & Co’s Retail Support Package is one way of ensuring that Cheshire’s independent retail sector has a future.” said Mr Mercer. Their 39-day journey will take the couple across desert and into the Andes as they travel through Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile and Peru. The car will soon be shipped to Rio de Janeiro ahead of the February rally. The Austin Healey 100-6 has been rebuilt by Ipstones-based Moorland Classics Cars after being delivered in boxes and bits. The couple first became involved in rallying 12 years ago.
America is the only continent we haven't been to. Our first rally was in Tibet. "My husband has always been interested in cars, he absolutely loves them, especially old cars, and his passion just rubbed off on me. "We love rallies because they are a great way to see the world. For me, the best bit about it is the freedom and seeing the different countries. We have met some wonderful people in the past and have had the chance to learn more about their cultures.
Roger, aged 64, added: "We decided to support the hospice because it does such a tremendous job for local children and their families. We are now looking for sponsors to help us make as much money as possible for the hospice." The Trentham Lakes hospice needs to raise ÂŁ2.4 million every year to care for and support seriously-ill children. Communications officer Andrea Harper said: "The Goodwins have taken part in rallies before but this time they decided to combine their love of driving with raising money and chose us because we are a local charity. "They are looking for people to sponsor them, whether it is for a leg of the journey or even just one kilometre." To support the Goodwins log onto www.justgiving.com/RogerGoodwin
Gillian, aged 63, who will navigate for her husband as they travel 650 kilometres-a-day, said: "There are competitive parts to the rally but we think of it as a personal challenge to see if we can complete it."We have done numerous rallies over the years and we chose this one because South

SOUTH CHESHIRE COLLEGE Businesses invited to tap into college IT expertise It also enables businesses to equip their staff with iPad technology and encourage employees to use iPads more effectively as a workplace tool. The course features a tutorial app for iPad which includes interactive training and guides people through the functionality on the iPad, from gestures to more advanced features.
The ‘Make the Most of Your iPad’ course is an exciting new course option for businesses.
Businesses across the region can benefit from a new range of computer courses at South Cheshire College. The IT programmes have been launched to bring businesses up to speed with advances in technology and help employees work more efficiently in the office. They include a ‘Make the Most of Your iPad’ (KikStart) course and a ‘Touch Typing for Computer Users’ (e-type) programme. The new iPad and touch typing evening courses can provide businesses with the skills to succeed in a fast changing marketplace. The KikStart for iPad course aims to unlock the potential of technology on the move and show what a powerful tool the iPad can be.
Meanwhile, the touch typing course is designed to provide employees with proficiency in keyboard skills which can make a huge difference to the efficiency of a business. The e-type course is a fun and flexible way to learn how to type quickly and accurately without having to look at the keyboard and develops hand-eye co-ordination, good posture and prevents repetitive strain injury. The KikStart for iPad course leads to a certificate of competence from BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, while the e-type course is an internationally recognised qualification which demonstrates keyboard skills. More traditional college IT courses which can benefit businesses include the internationally recognised European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) qualification, CISCO Networking programmes, Spreadsheets and Computer Gaming courses.
The College’s Work-Related Training Team also creates bespoke training for employees and can work with businesses to tailor a programme for their company and individual needs. Apprenticeships in IT are also available which can provide businesses with highly skilled employees and local companies such as Bentley Motors are benefiting from IT apprenticeships. Apprentices can work for either four full days in the workplace and come to college on the fifth day, while others undertake all their study and assessment in the workplace. Rachel Bromley, Head of IT at South Cheshire College, said: “Technology has moved on at such a fast pace that some of the more traditional IT courses may not be as relevant to businesses as they once were, so specific courses which tackle modern technology head-on could be just what they are looking for.” For more information about the IT courses, contact the College’s Work Related Training team on 01270 654638. AIR PRODUCTS Clean ways with water
Water is an essential element in our world and we are increasingly trying to conserve it wherever we can. Air Products is leading the
development of hi-tech, oxygenated water treatment systems. These systems are used by process industries and landfill sites to make sure the water released back into the environment is always clean and pollutantfree. They can also help to encourage water reuse too.
And legislative standards are set to tighten further. In Europe, the far-reaching Water Framework Directive, which is currently being rolled out to member states, aims to ensure that all ground and surface waters across the European Union achieve ‘good’ ecological status by 2027.
Oxygen works naturally. It dissolves into the wastewater, encouraging the growth of microbes or bacteria that help to cleanse the water by removing any pollutants. Using advanced oxygenation technologies, available from Air Products’ Halia™ range of water treatment solutions, water users can treat high strength effluent onsite and meet the standards set by EU legislation.
Philip Whittaker, business development lead for water systems at Air Products, said: “Our advanced oxygenation systems allow industries and other water treatment sites to treat large volumes of effluent quickly and efficiently. At the same time, the process manager can rest assured that specific water quality standards are being met and they can use the system to facilitate water reuse onsite too.”

Reaseheath College is hoping to forge closer partnerships with similar training institutions in China following an international exchange by Chinese educationalists. A six-strong delegation from China spent a week at the Nantwich specialist college as part of a Vocational Education Leadership Training programme. The programme enables delegates to look at best practice within the field of vocational education and is funded by the Chinese government.
It is hoped that the collaboration will lead to an exchange of knowledge between the two countries, particularly in the teaching areas of horticulture, agriculture, food technology, engineering and animal husbandry. A third college, the Qinghai Vocational and Technical College of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences, was also represented, as was a government training agency. The visitors looked at topics including strategic planning, programme development, staff development and student welfare. They also toured Reaseheath’s campus farm, anaerobic digestion plant, cutting edge food centre and equestrian centre. Yang Guiquan, Deputy Director of Xinjiang Agricultural Vocational Technical College said: “After a week attending lectures and
looking at training programmes, we have a clearer picture of how agriculture and food production is offered in the UK through vocational education. “We were very impressed with the combination of theoretical and practical teaching offered by Reaseheath. We also admired the way the college develops its staff and with its strong engagement with industry. We were very impressed with the college farm and beautiful campus and we have lots of ideas to take home.”
Reaseheath Principal Meredydd David said: “We were delighted to be able to work with our educational partners from China. Cheshire Financial Services business celebrates new acquisition Jones Sheridan Financial Consulting has taken ownership of Mike Taylor Financial Services, previously based in Haslington near Crewe. The acquisition is a healthy boost for Jones Sheridan as they set out earlier this year to acquire four businesses in the run-up to the Retail Distribution Review. This acquisition increases their funds under influence to circa £250 million. In January they purchased Warrington-based financial advisory firm, K F Garner Financial Consulting, later going on to purchase the financial services arm of Brown & Corbishley Solicitors based in Newcastle-under-Lyme.
Dave Williams and Mike Taylor
A Crewe-based financial advisory firm has announced the successful purchase of Mike Taylor Financial Services taking their total number of acquisitions this year up to three.
Speaking about the decision to sell, business owner Mike Taylor said: “The Retail Distribution Review (RDR) deadline is a matter of weeks away and is forcing big regulatory changes on the market for Independent Financial advisers. “We wanted to feel confident that our clients will be receiving the best possible financial advice and support post RDR and
so took the decision to partner with a business which is already RDR ready. “Jones Sheridan Financial Consulting was the perfect choice. They have been established more than 30 years and have built a reputation for offering top quality advice and delivering an exceptional service across the region.” Jones Sheridan Managing Director, Dave Williams has been spearheading the acquisition drive with several more in the pipeline “This year has been extremely fruitful in executing acquisitions and with the Retail Distribution Review just around the corner we expect this to continue into next year. “We look forward to working with Mike Taylor during this period of transition and wish him all the best for the future,” added Dave. Afford Bonds Mo Bros (and sistas) raise in excess £5,500 Following the sad loss of a long serving and valued colleague earlier in 2012 and also through supporting staff and clients with similar conditions, Afford Bond saw this as a very appropriate cause. This has really brought the team together and the support received from valued clients and contacts in the business community has been exceptional. Afford Bond would like to thank everyone who has donated and shown extreme generosity in making this such a successful campaign. The partners and team at Afford Bond LLP Chartered Accountants, the leading Cheshire independent practice, have this year become Mo Bros and Sistas for the month of Movember and raised in excess of £5,500 for local and national charities.
Jonathan Curwen, partner at Afford Bond commented, “we have been overwhelmed with the support we have received which is an indication of the importance of the campaign and the exceptional relationship we have with our clients. It’s been great fun
too with the biggest challenge being keeping a straight face during the November partners meeting. I don’t think any of the moustaches will make it to Christmas” Afford Bond’s campaign has been focused around a matched donation to St Luke’s Hospice. St Luke’s provide such an important and valued service to our local community and we are delighted to be able to support such a fantastic organisation. We hope to be able to continue our support in the future. Nantwich Office, 31 Wellington Road, Nantwich, Cheshire CW5 7ED Telephone 01270 623731

All Change for Crewe - £6m rail revitalisation is full steam ahead pride and make Crewe an attractive prospect to investors.” The phase-one work has been made possible after a successful bid by Cheshire East Council, supported by Network Rail, for £6.177m from the Government.
UNDERWAY: Cheshire East Council leader Michael Jones, Cllr Jamie Macrae, Cheshire East deputy mayor Dorothy Flude, All Change for Crewe chairman John Lea, highways manager Andrew Ross and Stuart MacFarlane of Mansell Construction at the railway station works site
Work is starting on the first phase of a £6m overhaul of Crewe Rail Station. The scheme is central to ambitious councilbacked plans to revitalise and regenerate the town and surrounding area. This vision is called ‘All Change for Crewe’. Phase one of the overhaul of the rail station includes a new surface-level car park with 240 spaces and 11 disabled bays, new pedestrian access from Weston Road and a new commercial development site next to the station. It also includes a new entrance with facilities for taxis and for people to pick up and drop off family and friends, refurbishment of the existing subway to platforms and a new area for delivery vehicles to access the station. The scheme is a key part of a wider project to turn the historic site into an iconic 21st
century gateway to the town and help unlock Crewe’s potential as an economic powerhouse by 2030. John Lea, chairman of All Change for Crewe – the private and public sector partnership set up to drive forward regeneration - said: “Works at the station are long overdue but at last townspeople can see positive change taking shape. “The Victorian infrastructure has been crying out for investment and finally we have something which is not a proposal or a plan but a scheme underway. “This may only be phase one, but it’s the start of a new era for rail travel, giving Crewe a station which lives up to its reputation as a famous rail hub. “A new-look station, with 21st century facilities, will do wonders to restore civic
Council leader Cllr Michael Jones said: “This is tremendous news both for Crewe and for Cheshire East as a whole. “Starting this work is a massive vote of confidence in the station, the town and wider regeneration scheme. “A revitalised rail hub is critical to boosting the town’s economy and its attractiveness to businesses and visitors.” The buildings to be demolished as part of the scheme of works on the former Royal Mail site are Network Rail’s Weston House and two former Royal Mail office blocks. Cheshire East Council successfully bid for £6.177m from the Government’s £100m Station Commercial Project Facility. The existing customer entrance on Nantwich Road will not close during the work and the taxi rank will still operate there as normal. The work will create dual access to the station at the upper and lower levels. Demolition and foundation digging work is due to start early next month (February 2013). The work is due to be completed by spring 2014.

Cheshire Skillshare Testimonials Cheshire SkillShare is continuing to thrive in the South Cheshire area, thanks to the support from the CVS and South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce. Here`s what a few of customers have said about us: Amber Consulting is a fundraising consultancy set up to help charities increase their income. I work with all sizes of charities from small local charities to national ones, my role is to review the current income and look at how it can be increased either through improvement to processes and procedures or through new income streams. My specialism is looking at sustainability, which usually translates as developing income from the many opportunities available in the private sector. Having worked in the voluntary sector for nearly twenty years I know how short on resources most charities are and how much time, passion and effort the paid and volunteer workers put into those organisations, working in this sector is never a 9 - 5 type of job. This makes working as a fundraising consultant a real challenge, I want to give my services to all charities for as little as possible but I have to earn a living, my way of supporting charities that cannot afford a consultant is by getting involved through SkillShare.
I was matched with Survive earlier in the year to assist in developing a fundraising strategy, I have been working with them ever since. I went in to meet the charities staff, to find out how much they needed to raise and what their current income sources were, I have developed a strategy with a number of recommendations, at this point I could have left the strategy with them, however I felt that if I did that they would find it difficult to implement it so I have worked with the volunteer fundraiser to support her, we meet regularly to discuss progress against the plan, we plan to take a major step in January that will give a secure future to Survive. I have found working with Survive hugely rewarding, our plans for the future will help them to develop, increase income and become more sure of their future funding, which will mean people in the region will have access to counselling for childhood abuse a service, that in recent months we have all come to realise, is much needed.
SkillShare identify charities within my local area that need support and match them with my specialist skill.
Cheshire SkillShare were proud to sponsor this years ‘Contribution to the Community’ award at the South Cheshire Chamber Business Awards 2012. The award celebrates and recognises businesses that have shared their skills and knowledge to support voluntary, community and charity organisations. This year it was a real pleasure to announce Kevin Edge of Design Office as the winner. Design Office have been working with various organisations in the local community for many years and this award was presented as recognition of this and their on-going commitment to continue assisting charitable and voluntary groups. David Brigg Comments: I am delighted that Cheshire SkillShare was able to present a "Contribution to the Community" Award.

(and all of us at Virgin) believe in our philosophy of caring for people, communities and our planet.
Since I started this initiative I have been delighted to discover how many Cheshire companies really do want to help others in the community who are less fortunate than themselves. There is, in my view, a huge untapped resource of time and skill available from the world of business of people who want to give of their time and skill. The challenge however is to find a good cause which really needs your individual skill. Cheshire SkillShare acts as a broker to link those with specific skills with good causes which need those skills. We have already linked more than a hundred businesses to charities and as a result helped those charities to be more efficient and effective.
Virgin’s aim is to help revolutionise the way that governments, businesses and the social sector work together – driving business as a force for good. Richard,

UK trade deficit narrows in November The UK's trade deficit narrowed in November, as exports rose more than imports, official figures have shown.
"Amongst others the trade numbers are a little bit better than last month, but the big picture is broadly flat," he said.
The seasonally-adjusted deficit on goods and services totalled £3.5bn in November, compared with £3.7bn in October.
"There is some improvement in exports, but in order to see the economy rebalance and generate anywhere near trend-like growth, we need much better data over the next few months."
Led by chemical sales, the UK's total goods exports increased by 2.9% to £24.8bn, while imports rose by 1.1% to £34bn. The UK's export and import of services in November remained unchanged. Services exports were valued at £15.5bn, while imports totalled £9.8bn. Economist Amit Kara of Bank UBS said UK exports remained subdued.
Mr Kara added that the economic weakness on the continent continued to have an impact on UK exports. "Our own view is that the eurozone will continue to disappoint, therefore all the (economic recovery) heavy lifting will have to be done by the UK consumer," he said.

“It was really good to meet some brilliant entrepreneurs in Preston who have got their loans and have got great businesses underway. Some of them are already employing people which is great news for them and great news for the economy. "These loans are a brilliant way to help this next generation of entrepreneurs get the financial help - and the confidence - to turn that spark of an idea, into a growing, thriving business. At an event in Preston, Lancashire on Thursday, Prime Minister David Cameron announced that the Government’s Start Up Loans initiative will receive an additional £30million and the age range will be expanded from 24 to 30 in order to meet demand. Following the announcement of extra funding to expand the Start Up Loans scheme, young entrepreneurs pitched their ideas and all advanced to the next stage. Prime Minister David Cameron said: “Start-Up loans are an important part of my mission to back aspiration, and all those young people who want to work hard and get on in life, so this country competes and thrives in the global race.
“It is by backing our entrepreneurs and championing small business that we can drive forward and grow the economy, and equip this country for the highly competitive era we are in.” One of the young entrepreneurs who pitched, Blue from Inspire My Growth, said of the event: “Yesterday was an amazing opportunity… to meet both the PM and James Caan!” “The PM told us that for our business, Inspire My Growth, it may be an idea to focus on a younger age range too, not only 14-23 year olds so we can help inspire younger people too! It was great to get this kind of feedback.”
In the UK, the officially designated authorities for the issue of EC Certificates of Origin are Chambers of Commerce. An EC Certificate of Origin is available to all businesses in the UK at a cost of £42.00 ex vat, but Chamber members receive a 50% discount. The Chamber works in partnership with UK Trade & Investment North West to promote and develop International Trade and exporting opportunities for companies in South Cheshire.
“The pitch was a fabulous experience and we learnt a lot. We had a lot of positive feedback from people coming up and speaking with us after the pitch who were in the audience. Many people have offered their services to help us with Inspire My Growth so we are really pleased about this.” “We're really excited now to be able to get a business mentor that will help us a long our way. This is amongst one of the key reasons Inspire My Growth applied for a Start Up Loan.

28 ADVERTORIAL
More of a big stick than a carrot stick to get out of this dip? In October 2012 the UK economy emerged from the double-dip recession when the Office of National Statistics announced that the UK economy grew by 1% in the third quarter of 2012. The message from the Government is that the economy is on the right track but there is still a long way to go. It appears that it is not all doom and gloom then… well it isn’t sunshine either, this figure was boosted by the London Olympics and the knock on effect of less trading days in the previous quarter due to the Jubilee. The 1% growth was only equivalent to the rate of growth for the same quarter in the previous year, when, in the following quarter the UK economy plunged back into recession. Will the same pattern emerge for the fourth quarter of 2012? Will we have a triple-dip recession? We will have to wait and see but the signs are not encouraging. Manufacturing and construction output has been struggling since 2007 leaving the UK economy to be propped up by a service sector which accounts for approximately 75% of the UK economy. Statistics suggest however that the fourth quarter has not been great for the service industry. Many businesses that have survived the double-dip recession in the service sector are saddled with unmanageable and unaffordable debt with little chance of borrowing on bearable terms to ease the burden. Certainly post-Christmas, pubs and restaurants find themselves in an almost intolerable position. It’s unlikely that a reduction in competition in the market place due to business closures will improve trade given that consumers are more likely to be concerned with cutting their current indebtedness than spending. Self-Assessments are due at the end of the month and for businesses this maybe one time in the year that they discuss their business with their accountants. Do you think your business can thrive in the future if it wasn’t for historic liabilities?
Recent Case study Partnership – Public House Background: Historic HMRC debts due to a previous unsuccessful pub venture, all savings invested and personal debts incurred to subsidise trading. The opportunity arose to run a pub in a different area as tenant landlords. The first two years trading were difficult but by concentrating on food and accommodation the partnership believed they could be profitable moving forward. Marketing spend increased, as did turnover, costs were cut and profits were boosted by increased occupancy rates of guest rooms. This also had a knock on effect on food and wet sales. They approached their accountant to review the partnership; management information showed that if payments in respect of historic liabilities were reduced, profits were expected going forward. The partnership was referred to Mackenzie Goldberg Johnson for advice – the pub was in serious risk of interruption due to threats of a bankruptcy petition from HMRC and disconnection from utility providers along with bailiff attendances due to non-payment of business rates.
Winter Edition 2012/2013
Protection was obtained within a week of meeting with the partnership by way of an Interim Order in the court which blocked all threatening legal actions whilst Voluntary Arrangements were proposed to the creditors. Support of the brewery was obtained and a creditors meeting was called. After hard negotiation with HMRC the Voluntary Arrangements were approved with an estimated 17p in the £1 return for creditors from on-going trade. The moral of this case study is to obtain advice early, a month or two later the partnership may have ceased due to bankruptcy orders against the partners or disconnection by the utility suppliers. The consensus from the partners was that taking advice two years earlier would with hindsight have been a better option.

Need a loan? The Chamber can help During my time in the Bank I often thought of December as a time when business owners re-charged their batteries and returned in January with fresh ideas and renewed enthusiasm. Consequently this usually turned out to be our busiest time of the year.
Chamber Loan Fund can help you or your clients.
Nothing changed this year then, albeit, a bit like Anthea Turner appearing in Dancing on Ice – you shouldn’t let adversity get you down and no matter how many times you get knocked back you need to keep going. At the Chamber we have seen a degree of the Anthea spirit with an upturn in enquiries for funds and we are working on a number of cases where businesses seek to progress plans, some of which were probably formulated over the Christmas break.
Funding is designed to aid businesses to maintain or create jobs and assist in regeneration of the local economy in Crewe and Nantwich.
Unfortunately this mood of optimism was often overtaken in January by snow and ice, government cut back threats, cavernous local roads and the Third Round of the FA Cup without the Alex.
Most of these plans involve owner managed businesses covering both growth and consolidation with the Chamber remaining positive in talking to these clients and in the vast majority of cases, supportive. There is still scope for us to do more and we would encourage any local business or accountant to call us and discuss how the
Up to £10,000 can be provided for short term working capital requirements – usually repayable over a maximum 2 year period with longer term projects covering requirements up to £25,000 being funded over a period of up to 5 years. Business Loans Executive Richard Weilding
I suppose the message is to keep positive and whilst it may be some time before we can drive along smooth road surfaces in Crewe and Nantwich or indeed until the Alex again make it to the Third Round of the FA Cup, we live in hope that Anthea can succeed in a Reality TV Game Show and prove to us all that if we remain positive and keep bouncing back then we can achieve our goal. It’s not all doom and gloom out there! Give us a call and let ‘s see if we can keep the current momentum going.
